Incorporating “cross-linkable” double bonds into cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) is crucial for fabricating high-performance composite hydrogels. Herein, TEMPO-oxidized CNFs syringaldehyde propiolate ether (TS), functionalized with “cross-linkable” internal alkenes (-C=C-), was synthesized via hydroxyl-yne click chemistry under mild aqueous conditions. This rapid modification yielded 0.24 ± 0.04 mmol/g alkenes in 5 min and 0.50 ± 0.03 mmol/g in 4 h. The internal -C=C- groups enabled efficient UV-induced gelation of TS dispersions (0.15–0.6 wt%) within 10 min. The TS-polyacrylamide (PAM) nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited a dual-network structure, with a crosslinked TS network providing mechanical support and a PAM network ensuring flexibility. At TS-PAM mass ratios of 0.45–0.9 wt%, stress and toughness increased by 108 ± 11.1 % and 673 ± 58.2 %, respectively, due to enhanced crosslinking and stress transfer. These hydrogels exhibited strain sensitivity (10–200 %) and stable dynamic response across strain rates (50–250 mm/min), with a maximum gauge factor (GF) of 4.3. Real-time motion tracking highlights their promise for wearable sensors and sustainable flexible electronics. Notably, the use of green hydroxyl-yne click chemistry and natural lignin-derived syringaldehyde ensures environmentally friendly and efficient modification, avoiding harmful reagents and minimizing waste. This study presents a sustainable and efficient approach to high-performance cellulose nanofiber hydrogels with promising applications in flexible electronics, motion sensing, and soft robotics.

Syringa pubescens Turcz. has been universally employed to make flower tea for the treatment of cough in the western part of Henan Province. Many researchers have confirmed that the phenylethanoid glycosides from S. pubescens were bioactive compounds. In this study, various macroporous resins have been employed to evaluate the potential of adsorption and desorption for phenylethanoid glycosides. The HPD-450 resins were appropriate for the purification of phenylethanoid glycosides, and the optimum purification conditions were established. The adsorption properties were well modeled using the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Meanwhile, the adsorption isotherm could be better represented by the Langmuir equation, suggesting that the process was an exothermic reaction. Moreover, the purified sample possessed a stronger antioxidant capacity. The inhibitory activity of the crude extract against α-amylase and α-glucosidase was stronger than that of purified sample. The findings obtained provided a scientific foundation for further research and high-value exploration of this plant and a potential technique for scale-up purification of phenylethanoid glycosides.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as one of the most frequent types of liver disease in pediatric populations with obesity. Tilianin has multiple biological activities including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Here, we aim to explore the functions and possible mechanisms of tilianin on NAFLD in obese children. A high-fat high-carbohydrate (HFHC) diet was used to feed 21-d-old mice. Tilianin was administered at a dose of 10 or 20 mg/kg daily. HFHC-fed mice gained weight, increased liver index. The liver showed hepatocyte ballooning, inflammatory infiltration, and steatosis. Elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) and reduced the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level were found in HFHC-fed mice. Administration of tilianin significantly reduced these impairments. We further evaluated proteins related to lipid metabolism and observed that LXRα, SREBP-1c, FAS and ACC1 expression were blunted following tilianin administration. In addition, tilianin suppressed reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and lipid peroxide 4-Hydroxynonenal expression, ascribed to its oxidative stress-modulating capacity. Tilianin also reversed the increase in F4/80 expression and proinflammatory cytokine levels. Of note, tilianin administration resulted in decreased protein levels of active caspase-1 and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) in HFHC-fed mice. Our study suggests that tilianin may ameliorate NAFLD in early obese mice by modulating lipids metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation, which may in part involve inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

The flower of Syringa pubescens Turcz., frequently prepared as herbal tea, exhibits various biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective activities. Herein, we identify the chemical constituents from ethanol extract of S. pubescens flower (SPFE) and explore its antioxidant, anti-xanthine oxidase (anti-XOD), and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme activities, and anti-inflammatory activities and mechanisms. SPFE contained a variety of glycosides and showed good antioxidant capacity and effectively inhibited the activity of 5-LOX and XOD enzymes in vitro. In the model of RAW264.7 cell inflammation generated by lipopolysaccharide, SPFE not only impeded the expression of inflammatory mediators and the accumulation of malondialdehyde, but also restored the capacity of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, SPFE could notably relieve or treat inflammation by suppressing the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 proteins. In vivo inflammation models, oral SPFE remarkably reduced the swelling of the ear, paw tissues in mice and had a good anti-inflammatory activity, reducing cell infiltration in the claw tissue, and restoring the degree of oxidative damage in the organism. Our findings demonstrate that SPFE exhibits promising potential as a novel therapeutic agent or nutraceutical for anti-inflammatory applications. Graphical
