The risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the water recharged with reclaimed water is a bottleneck for water reuse . The suppression effects and mechanisms of the combination of UV-C and berberine on Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus in reclaimed water were investigated. Mono UV-C irradiation at 75 mJ cm −2 could suppress the growth of M. aeruginosa for 7 d and that at 90 mJ cm −2 could suppress the growth of S. obliquus for 5 d. UV-C irradiation combined with 0.2–2 mg L −1 berberine lengthened the inhibition period of M. aeruginosa to 10- > 22 d and that of S. obliquus to 7- > 22 d and induced more rapid lethal effects on the harmful microalgal cells, in significant synergetic patterns. The combination of UV-C and berberine suppressed total, intracellular and extracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) more effectively and decreased the MC-LR quota significantly, which further reduced the risks of microcystin production and release. Furthermore, synergetic mechanisms of the combined treatments were systematically investigated from the aspects of photosynthetic system (photosynthetic activity and pigments), metabolic activity (ATP and membrane potential), oxidation stress (reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH)), and apoptosis-like cell death (phosphatidylserine (PS) ectropion, caspase-3 activity and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) positive rate). The combination treatment provided a joint attack of UV-C and berberine on photosynthetic transport chain of photosynthetic system II (PS II), and a synergetic pathway to achieve more severe disruptions in energy metabolism as well as aggravated oxidative stress . The accumulated ROS enhanced increases in programmed cell death (PCD) indicators of both microalgal species, which contributed to the enhancement effects on growth suppression. The results showed that the combination treatment achieved lower dose requirements of both UV-C irradiation and berberine for inducing the same inhibition effects on microalgal cells, which was promising to be applied in the HABs control of reclaimed water.

Photostimulated luminescence (PSL) materials have attracted considerable attention in many important fields, varying from radiation dosimetry and biomedical imaging to security encryption and optical data storage. Nevertheless, monochromatic light illumination is usually used as the stimulus source to realize the absolute separation between the PSL signal and the excitation light. Furthermore, a dark environment is considered necessary to get rid of the interference from polychromatic ambient light. Herein, we report a glow-in-the-daylight material, YBO3:Pr3+, which can emit intense and long-lasting ultraviolet-C (UVC) persistent luminescence in a bright indoor lighting or outdoor sunlight environment after ceasing X-ray excitation. We note that although the YBO3:Pr3+ phosphor shows very weak UVC afterglow in darkness, remarkable enhancement of UVC persistent luminescence can be observed in a bright ambient light environment. The UVC persistent luminescence peaking at 274 nm can last for more than 24 h under the illumination of 900 lux white LED light, and the UVC luminescence signal is free from the interference of the ambient light. This enhancement of UVC persistent luminescence is assigned to the continuous and efficient photostimulation of polychromatic ambient light, which has been confirmed by comprehensive spectroscopic investigations. The appealing glow-in-the-daylight phenomenon from the YBO3:Pr3+ phosphor will not only lay the foundation to develop more UVC persistent phosphors suitable for working in a bright environment, it will also promote the widespread use of these storage phosphors across a broad range of applications such as microbial inactivation and optical tagging.

Mature green cherry tomato fruit were harvested and treated with ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation at a predetermined dose of 4.2 kJ m −2 and stored at 18 °C for 35 days. The effects of UV-C treatment on firmness, cell wall compositions (pectin and cellulose), cell wall ultra-structure, levels of ethylene production, and activities of cell wall degrading enzymes in the fruit were investigated during storage. Major genes involved in cell wall degradation ( PME 2.1, Cel 1, PG cat and Exp 1) were also checked. Fruit firmness was better maintained in UV-C treated fruit corresponding with higher contents of cellulose and acid-soluble pectin. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that UV-C irradiation retarded cell wall disassembly in the pericarp. Ethylene production was significantly inhibited by UV-C treatment. The UV-C treatment also suppressed the transcriptional expression of PME2.1 , Cel1 , PGcat and Exp1 genes, and inhibited pectin methylesterase (PME; EC 3.1.1.11), polygalacturonase (PG; EC3.2.1.15) and cellulase (EC3.2.1.4) activities during storage. These results suggested that the inhibition of ethylene production, which in turn down-regulated expression of genes encoding cell wall degrading enzymes, might be one of the possible mechanisms of UV-C delaying tomato fruit softening.

The emerging technology of inhibiting polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is crucial for preventing enzymatic browning in food. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 4.5 kJ/m 2 ultraviolet (UV)-C radiation and 0.02 mg/mL L-cysteine (L-cys) treatment on the enzyme activity, physico-chemical properties, thermal properties, structure, and molecular microstructure of PPO. UV-C/L-cys decreased PPO activity and had the highest aggregation index and turbidity of PPO. UV-C/L-cys further reduced the denaturation temperature point and increased the denaturation enthalpy of PPO. UV-C/L-cys turned the α-helix to random coil of PPO and destroyed the tertiary structure. This combined treatment aggregated the microstructure of PPO, which led to covering the active center of the enzyme, leading to its inactivation. Molecular docking simulation confirmed that L-cys bound to PPO through hydrogen bonding and ionic contact. This study established a foundation for the application of UV-C radiation and L-cys treatment to control food browning.

Mature green cherry tomato fruit were harvested and treated with ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation at a predetermined dose of 4.2 kJ m −2 , and stored at 18 °C for 35 days. The effects of UV-C treatment on color change, pigment contents, and the expression of major genes involved in carotenoid metabolism, including Psy 1, Pds , Lcy - β , and Lcy - ɛ , encoding phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase, lycopene β-cyclase and lycopene ɛ-cyclase, respectively, were examined. The UV-C treated fruit developed a pink red color in contrast to the normal orange red color of control fruit. Lycopene accumulation during ripening in UV-C treated fruit was significantly inhibited but its final content was not affected. However, both accumulation and final content of β-carotene were significantly suppressed in UV-C treated fruit. The lower content of β-carotene, leading to a higher lycopene to β-carotene ratio, is probably responsible for the altered color phenotype in UV-C treated fruit. Psy 1, a major gene involved in lycopene synthesis was inhibited by UV-C irradiation. Significantly suppressed expression of Lcy-β gene was also observed in UV-C treated fruit. Thus it is possible that the lower transformation from lycopene to carotenes contributed to the relatively stable content of lycopene.

A novel light source UV-C laser was applied in persulfate (PS) activation to effectively remove iodinated X-ray contrast medias (ICMs) including iohexol (IOX), iopamidol (IPM) and diatrizoate (DTZ) in this study. Significant ICMs degradation was observed in UV-C laser/PS systems with pseudo first-order rate constants of 0.022–0.067 s −1 . Sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) were the main active species in the three ICMs degradation, and the steady-state concentrations ([SO 4 •− ] ss ) were 3.629 × 10 −11 M (IOX), 1.702 × 10 −11 M (IPM) and 1.148 × 10 −11 M (DTZ), respectively. Under the high intensity of UV-C laser, the optimal reaction efficiency was achieved at pH = 7.0 with PS concentration of 1.0 mM, and the degradation efficiency for IOX reached 93.8% within only 40 s. Both bicarbonate and chloride ions could inhibit the three ICMs degradation and the inhibition rate increased with the increase of ions concentration . The kinetic models were established and the steady-state concentrations of radicals were calculated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experiments were used to derive the reaction pathways for three ICMs. Cyclic voltammetry measurements detected a lower redox potential peak in IOX degradation, revealing the existence of electron shuttles under the UV-C laser irradiation to promote the redox reaction. This study is the first report of UV-C laser activation of persulfate. It is a new advanced oxidation process mediated by very effective photolysis and active species formation.

The present study investigated influences of ultraviolet light C (UV-C; 2 kJ m −2 ) irradiation and high-oxygen modified atmosphere packaging (MAP; 80 % O 2 , 10 % CO 2 and 10 % N 2 ) on physiological quality, microbial growth and lignification metabolism of fresh-cut carrots. After 15-d cold storage, comparing with either treatment alone, the combination of UV-C irradiation and high-oxygen MAP (abbr. UV-C + MAP) more obviously inhibited firmness, weight loss, ascorbic acid, total carotenoid and γ-aminobutyric acid declines, reduced respiration and ethylene production rates as well as delayed bacterial growth. UV-C + MAP more strongly restrained whiteness index, total phenolic, lignin and malondialdehyde increases. Furthermore, UV-C + MAP treatment more efficiently retarded lignin synthesis by suppressing phenolic metabolism-related enzyme (phenylalanine ammonialyase, PAL; polyphenoloxidase, PPO; peroxidase, POD) activities and their gene ( DcPAL ; DcPPO ; DcPOD ) expressions. Above results indicated that UV-C + MAP exhibited synergistic effects in retaining physiological quality, delayed senescence process, reducing microbial growth, alleviating lignification degree, and lessened surface whitening. Therefore, UV-C + MAP could maintain overall quality and extend shelf-life during storage of fresh-cut carrots.

Due to the changes in pathogenic species and the absence of research on topical skin antibiotics, the therapy of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) is facing more and more severe challenges. It is particularly urgent to look for alternative therapies without induction of drug resistance. UV C (UVC) light within the range of 200 to 280 nm is one of the most common techniques used to kill and/or inactivate pathogenic microorganisms. However, the traditional most commonly used wavelength of 254 nm irradiated from a low-pressure mercury lamp is hazardous to human health, being both carcinogenic and damaging to eye tissues, which limits its applications in vivo. This research aimed to investigate the antimicrobial properties and influence of 275-nm UVC light from a light-emitting diode (UVC-LED light) on wound healing time. Five bacteria, three fungi, and scalded-mouse models combined with SSTIs were used to evaluate the antimicrobial effect in vitro and in vivo. 275-nm UVC-LED light inactivated both bacteria and fungi with a very short irradiation time in vitro and induced neither DNA damage nor epidermal lesions in the mice’s skin. Furthermore, in mouse models of SSTIs induced by either methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Candida albicans, the 275-nm UVC-LED light showed significant antimicrobial effects and shortened the wound healing time compared with that in the no-irradiation group. UVC-LED light at 275 nm has the potential to be a new form of physical therapy for SSTIs.IMPORTANCE As a common clinical problem, the therapy of SSTIs is facing growing challenges due to an increase in the number of drug-resistant bacteria and fungi. UV C (UVC) light sterilization has been widely used in all aspects of daily life, but there are very few reports about in vivo therapy using UVC light. It is well known that prolonged exposure to UVC light increases the possibility of skin cancer. In addition, it is also very harmful for eyes. UV irradiation with 254-nm UVC light can cause corneal damage, like thinning of the corneal epithelial layer, superficial punctate keratitis, corneal erosion, etc. In this study, we focused on looking for a more accessible light source and safer UVC wavelength, and 275-nm UVC LED light was chosen. We investigated its applicability for SSTIs therapy with relative skin safety and expected that it could be used as a new physical therapy method for SSTIs.

The majority of the bioactive components in milk exhibit sensitivity to heat treatments. This research is the first systematically compare the effects of thermal (low-temperature long time pasteurization, LTLT; high-temperature short time pasteurization, HTST; ultra-high temperature, UHT; microwave-assisted heating; retort sterilization) and non-thermal (ultraviolet-C, UV-C; high hydrostatic pressure processing, HPP; filtered sterilization; high-intensity ultrasound, HIUS) treatments on the physicochemical properties and immune-active serum proteins of whole milk aliquots under the equivalent microbicidal efficacy. LTLT and HTST had little impact on whole milk. HPP at 400 MPa for 5 min was an optimal alternative to pasteurized milk in terms of equivalent microbicidal efficacy, higher nutrient retention (∼6% and 16.2% loss for IgG and lactoferrin) and fewer oxidation products (0.69 nmol/mg protein carbonyls). The serum protein denaturation of 600 MPa HPP-treated milk (79.4% and 31.36% loss for IgG and lactoferrin) was significantly higher than in pasteurized milk, but still lower than in UHT milk (97.16% and 70.85% loss for IgG and lactoferrin). Since photo-oxidation induced by high-dose irradiation was detrimental to the organoleptic properties, relying on UV-C as stand-alone replacement to pasteurization is not advisable. Combined with existing pasteurization methods, UV-C can achieve superior microbial inactivation at mild sterilization temperatures. HIUS, a promising novel tool, should be further optimized regarding the relevant standards to enable it to be used in industrial-scale processing and reproducibility. Compared with traditional thermal treatments, non-thermal strategies offer a significant reduction in the microbial load of raw milk while better preserving bioactive proteins, However, optimizing processing parameters remains essential to strike a balance between microbial inactivation and retention of active substances.
