Zn2Ga3−x−yCrxNdyGe0.75O8 (ZGGO:Crx,Ndy) persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) (x = 0, 0.02; and y = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method in combination with a following heat treatment under vacuum. The effects of Nd3+ concentration on chemical composition, size distribution, luminescence property, the persistent energy transfer from Cr3+ to Nd3+ and afterglow imaging were studied in detail. When the Nd3+ concentration was increased from 0 to 0.04, the particle size increased from 45.4 to 86.2 nm. The afterglow emissions in the NIR-I (696 nm) and NIR-II (1067 nm) regions, which are ascribed to the 2E, 4T2 → 4A2 transitions of Cr3+ and the 4F3/2 → 4I11/2 transition of Nd3+, respectively, were simultaneously acquired after stopping the 635 nm excitation. Among the nanoparticles with different concentrations, ZGGO:Cr0.02,Nd0.02 exhibits the strongest NIR-II afterglow intensity and the corresponding energy transfer efficiency from Cr3+ to Nd3+ is found to be 25.9%. In addition, enhanced X-ray excited afterglow imaging can be observed in Nd3+/Cr3+ codoped nanoparticles dispersed in water, human serum albumin solution and simulated lysosomal environment compared to the Cr3+ singly doped nanoparticles. Renewable NIR afterglow imaging was realized through an X-ray reexcitation strategy. In particular, both the X-ray excitation strategy accompanied by NIR-I afterglow emission and the red light (635 nm) excitation strategy accompanied by NIR-II afterglow emission exhibit high tissue penetration capability. This study provides a further understanding of how to develop a suitable strategy for realizing deep tissue autofluorescence-free bioimaging.

Photomodulation technology, characterized by its high spatiotemporal resolution, has emerged as a transformative approach for precise, rapid, and noninvasive regulation of intricate cellular signaling networks, offering unprecedented opportunities for biomedical research. Nevertheless, the in vivo implementation of wireless photomodulation remains constrained by the inherent limitations of conventional photoresponsive systems. Addressing this challenge, we report a BODIPY-based photocatalyst with exceptional red-light responsiveness ( λ > 630 nm). Transient spectroscopic studies show that this photocatalyst exhibits the feature with solvent polarity-switching excited state dynamics. In addition, we observed ultralong triplet-state lifetimes (590 µs in tetrahydrofuran; 862 µs in toluene), which is favorable for establishing a far-red-light-driven photocatalytic decaging platform that synergistically integrates the BODIPY photocatalyst with endogenous NADH as the intrinsic electron donor. Crucially, this system demonstrates robust in vivo efficacy, achieving significant tumor growth suppression in murine tumor models through localized prodrug activation. This work not only provides fundamental insights into engineering long-lived triplet states in metal-free organic photocatalysts but also pioneers a biocompatible strategy for spatiotemporally controlled therapeutic interventions, bridging the gap between advanced photochemistry and precision biomedicine.

Carbon dots with both red-emission and red-excitation (R-CDs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent optical property and promising application in various fields. However, most carbon dots (CDs) with red-emission are only excited with short wavelength irradiation, which heavily hinders their further applications. Herein, novel R-CDs are obtained through a hydrothermal synthesis by using p-phenylenediamine and ammonium thiocyanate as precursors. The as-synthesized R-CDs exhibit a strong red emission at 618 nm at a long excitation (598 nm). Moreover, the R-CDs are explored as a selective and sensitive “turn-off” sensor for Sn 2+ detection by the non-radiative recombination of the excitons through effective electron, charge or energy transfer between Sn 2+ and surface functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, amine, thiophene, and S O, with a detection range from 0 to 90 μM and a detection limit of as low as 17.25 nM.
