Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) using Fe/Al/Zn impregnated biochar composites

Sun  Runze,Wang Jie,Peng Yutao,Wang Hongmei,Chen Qing

Arsenic (As) contamination of aquatic and soil environments is a global concern, highlighting the importance of As removal via high-efficiency and low-cost removal technologies. In the present study, novel trimetallic biochar was developed through pyrolyzing corn straw impregnated with inexpensive metal Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides. The results of SEM, FTIR, and XRD verified the formation of metal oxyhydroxides on the surface of the modified biochars, and the modification increased the specific surface area (SSA), total pore volume (TPV), and surface charge of the Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FAZ-CB). Compared with the original biochar, higher sorption rates and capacities was observed for the FAZ-CB. The maximum As (V) adsorption capacities of FAZ-CB reached 82.9 mg g −1 . A pot experiment showed that application of FAZ-CB decreased bioavailable As fractions in the red soil significantly reduced the uptake of As by arugula in edible part and root (42.6 and 56.8%, respectively). The present study demonstrated the superiority of FAZ-CB in the As(V) immobilization in red soil, suggesting that it is a promising candidate for practical application for As immobilization. Therefore, FAZ-CB can be used as a promising functionalized biochar to remediate As contaminated red soil.

Biochar Mitigates the Negative Effects of Microplastics on Sugarcane Growth by Altering Soil Nutrients and Microbial Community Structure and Function

Qihua Wu,Wenling Zhou,Diwen Chen,Jiang Tian,Junhua Ao

Microplastic pollution in sugarcane areas of China is severe, and reducing the ecological risks is critical. Biochar has been widely used in soil remediation. This study aims to explore the effects and mechanisms of microplastics combined with or without biochar on sugarcane biomass, soil biochemical properties in red soil through a potted experiment. The results show that, compared with control (CK), treatments with microplastics alone reduced the dry biomass of sugarcane, soil pH, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents by an average of 8.8%, 2.1%, 1.1%, and 2.0%, respectively. Interestingly, microplastics combined with biochar could alleviate the negative effects of microplastic accumulation on sugarcane growth and soil quality. There were significant differences in the bacterial community alpha diversity indices and compositions among different treatments. Compared with CK, treatments with microplastics alone obviously decreased the observed operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and the Chao1 and Shannon indices of soil total bacteria (16S rRNA gene-based bacteria) while increasing them inphoD-harboringbacteria. Microplastics combined with biochar treatments significantly increased the abundance ofSubgroup_10for the 16S rRNA gene and treatments with microplastics alone significantly increased the relative abundance ofStreptomycesfor thephoDgene compared to CK. Moreover, compared with microplastics alone, the treatments with microplastics combined with biochar increased the relative abundance ofSubgroup_10,Bacillus,Pseudomonasin soil total bacteria, andAmycolatopsisandBradyrhizobiuminphoD-harboringbacteria, most of which can inhibit harmful bacteria and promote plant growth. Additionally, different treatments also changed the abundance of potential microbial functional genes. Compared to CK, other treatments increased the abundance of aerobic ammonia oxidation and denitrification but decreased the abundance of nitrate respiration and nitrogen respiration; meanwhile, these four functional genes involved in N cycling processes were obviously higher in treatments with microplastics combined with biochar than in treatments with microplastics alone. In conclusion, microplastics combined with biochar could alleviate the negative effects of microplastic accumulation on sugarcane biomass by altering soil nutrients and microbial community structure and function. Keywords:microplastics;biochar;sugarcane biomass;microbial community;red soil

Recovery of high-quality iron phosphate from acid-leaching tailings of laterite nickel ore

Yanchao Qiao,Huimin Wang,Chao Liu,Shuang Luo

Laterite nickel ore is rich in nickel and iron resources, and the nickel element is extracted in the form of nickel salt. However, the acid-leaching tailings of laterite nickel ore (LTLNO), which contain valuable iron resources, have not been cost-effectively recovered. In this work, we designed a novel method to extract iron from LTLNO and recycle it into high-valuable iron phosphate products using only phosphoric acid and iron powder. We explored the effects of reaction parameters, such as phosphoric acid concentration, iron powder dosage, time, and temperature, on the leaching behavior of key elements. The results showed that the iron leaching rate was as high as 96.54 % when using 3.5 mol/L phosphoric acid with a liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) of 5 mL/g and an iron powder dosage based on the Fe/Fe n+ ratio of 0.5 after 3 h at 25 °C, and a final high-purity FePO 4 (99.4 %) was obtained. Kinetic analysis revealed that the leaching reaction was controlled by the diffusion through the neogenetic layer, and the leaching reactions were thermodynamically favorable. This method allows for a simpler and more efficient recovery of iron and the products of higher-value iron phosphate products than other LTLNO recycling technologies. Additionally, it offers a total economic benefit of $134/t for LTLNO treatment, demonstrating great prospects for industrial application.

Distinct Difference in High-temperature Characteristics between Limonitic Nickel Laterite and Ordinary Limonite

Yuxiao Xue,Deqing Zhu,Jian Pan,Zhengqi Guo,Hongyu Tian,Dingzheng Wang,Liaoting Pan

In order to achieve the effective utilization of limonitic nickel laterite for stainless steel production at lower cost, the distinct difference in high-temperature characteristics between limonitic nickel laterite and ordinary limonite has been systematically expounded via compact sintering method and the comparative analysis of the relevant sintering performance at the suitable basicity has also been conducted through sinter pot tests. The results indicate that limonitic nickel laterite possesses much poorer assimilability and liquid phase fluidity due to the abundant high-smelting minerals compared with ordinary limonite. The strength of bonding matrix of limonitic nickel laterite is relatively better as the basicity is not exceed 1.4 while that of ordinary limonite is maintained at a higher level with the basicity of no less than 1.8. Meanwhile, the former is far weaker than the latter due to the much less amount of liquid phase, rather higher porosity and looser microstructure of the bonding matrix. Limonitic nickel laterite is identified as a far more refractory ore for sintering compared with ordinary limonite, further supported by sinter pot tests. It is essential to strengthen limonitic nickel laterite sintering from the standpoints of how to promote the liquid phase formation and densification of the sinter.

Resource Recycling of Red Soil to Synthesize Fe2O3/FAU-type Zeolite Composite Material for Heavy Metal Removal

Zheting Chu,Jiaxin Liang,Dazhong Yang,Jing Li,Hong Chen

Heavy metal-polluted water is of great concern to human health and the eco-environment. In situ water remediation techniques enabled by highly efficient adsorption materials are of great importance in these circumstances. Among all the materials used in water remediation, iron-based nanomaterials and porous materials are of great interest, benefiting from their rich redox reactivity and adsorption function. Here, we developed a facile protocol to directly convert the widely spread red soil in south China to fabricate the Fe2O3/faujasite (FAU)-type zeolite composite material. The detailed synthesis procedure and synthesis parameters, such as reaction temperature, reaction time, and the Si/Al ratio in the raw materials, have been carefully tuned. The as-synthesized composite materials show good adsorption capacity for typical heavy metal(loid) ions. With 0.001 g/mL Fe2O3/FAU-type zeolite composite material added to different heavy metal(loid)-polluted aqueous solutions (single type of heavy metal(loid) concentration: 1,000 mg/L [ppm]), the adsorption capacity was shown to be 172, 45, 170, 40, 429, 693, 94, and 133 mg/g for Cu (II), Cr (III), Cr (VI), As (III), Cd (II), Pb (II), Zn (II), and Ni (II) removal, respectively, which can be further expanded for heavy metal-polluted water and soil remediation.

Synergistic chemical reduction, photochemical reduction and ion-exchange driving forces within a FeS2/red soil–analcime zeolite composite for effective Cr(VI) remediation in groundwater

Huan Tang,Jiaxin Liang,Yangzi Shangguan,Hong Chen

Reduction and stabilization of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater are essential for mitigating environmental and human health risks. In this work, we demonstrate the development of FeS2/Re-ANA composites (PM/RAs), a multifunctional material that integrates the chemical and photochemical reduction function within FeS2 with the ion-exchange capacity of the red soil-converted ANA type of zeolites for effective reduction and stabilization of Cr(VI) in groundwater. The PM/RA-3 composite material obtained an impressive Cr(VI) removal rate of 98.90% in a solution with 1 mg L−1 Cr(VI), reducing the residual concentration to 0.011 mg L−1, which complies with the WHO standards for drinking water quality. A detailed mechanistic investigation reveals that FeS2 facilitates both chemical and photoreduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), which is subsequently either adsorbed onto the FeS2 surface or immobilized through an ion-exchange process within the zeolite microporous channels. Furthermore, fixed-bed column studies using groundwater samples contaminated with Cr(VI) from a chromate production facility double confirmed the material's effectiveness in meeting discharge standards under environmentally relevant water conditions. This work highlights the potential of employing FeS2/Re-ANA composites as a promising material for treating Cr(VI)-polluted groundwater in permeable reactive barriers, offering a significant advancement for the control of the widespread Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater pollution.

Preparation of Nickel Matte from Laterite Nickel Ore Using Pyrite as the Sulfurization Agent

Li Zhongchen,Tian Qinghua,Wang Qinmeng,Zulhan Zulfiadi,Wang Songsong,Hidayat Taufiq,Guo Xueyi

With the depletion of high-quality nickel sulfide ore resources, the reliance on laterite nickel ore as a primary raw material for nickel production has increased. The pyrometallurgical process for laterite nickel ore mainly yields ferronickel, which is used predominantly in stainless steel production and falls short of the needs of the burgeoning new energy sector. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a new process for producing nickel matte through sulphidizing smelting of laterite nickel ore. The study examines the impact of various parameters, including the sulfurizing agent, reducing agent, flux, and the proportion of ore, on the slag liquidus temperature and nickel and cobalt recovery ratios. The findings reveal that when maintaining the original system with a m (SiO2) /m (MgO) ratio of 1.2, the slag composition remains outside the liquid phase region when altering the CaO content. Increasing the CaO content expands the m (SiO2) /m (MgO) value range for the slag composition within the liquid phase region. Optimized conditions show that with an m (SiO2) /m (MgO) ratio of 2.5, 10 pct CaO addition, 6.5 pct sulfiding agent addition, 4 pct reducing agent addition, p O 2 at 10 −9 atm, and an SO 2 gas flow rate of 4 mL/min, the nickel and cobalt recovery ratios reach 98.72 and 81.92 pct, respectively. Most of the iron transitions to the slag phase, with 79.80 pct entering the slag and 20.20 pct remaining in the nickel matte. The resulting nickel matte contains 19.41 pct Ni, 0.84 pct Co, and 28.39 pct S, primarily comprising nickel-iron, nickel matte, and iron matte phases.

From stainless steel to batteries: industrial-scale closed-loop hydrometallurgical integration for ferronickel-to-precursor conversion

Jun Luo,Pengfei Yang,Jing Chen,Yanhu Chen,Mingjun Rao,Guanghui Li,Tao Jiang

In lithium-ion battery (LIBs) production, raw material costs account for 60–80 % of total manufacturing expenses. The extraction of critical metals, as the first step in the entire process from mineral processing to battery fabrication, represents the most costly and pollutant-intensive stage. This work focuses on clean and low-cost preparation of LIBs cathode precursors through fundamental study and industrial validation. Using crude ferronickel derived from electric furnace smelting of laterite nickel ore as raw material, systematic investigations were conducted to optimize the roasting, acid leaching, and precipitation processes for preparing FePO 4 and mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP)/nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM), and a novel hydrometallurgical integration flow path based on "atmosphere controlled roasting activation – atmospheric sulfuric acid leaching – gradient precipitation" was proposed. Under optimized laboratory conditions, leaching efficiencies exceeding 99 % for Ni, Co, and 96 % for Fe were achieved from ferronickel, and over 97 % of Fe was recovered as FePO 4 , while more than 98 % of Ni and Co were converted into MHP/NCM products. The world's first demonstration production line utilizing this technology has been commissioned, with detailed analysis of industrial processes and product characteristics. Compared to existing laterite nickel ore extraction technologies, this innovative approach enables short-process synthesis of cathode precursor materials, significantly reduces leaching temperature and tailing residue emissions, demonstrating substantial economic and environmental benefits. This work establishes a paradigm for sustainable battery material production, aligning with circular economy principles through multi-component utilization of laterite nickel resources.

Reinforcement of the two-stage leaching of laterite ores using surfactants

Zhang Peiyu,Wang Hairui,Hao Jingcheng,Cui Jiwei

A two-stage leaching process, namely, high-pressure acid leaching-atmospheric acid leaching, was used to treat laterite ores under mild conditions. The leaching ratio of Ni was low because of adsorption and incomplete leaching. In this work, surfactants were used as additives to boost the leaching ratio of Ni. The effect of surfactant type (cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants) on the leaching ratio of Ni was investigated. Leaching results showed that stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC) apparently increased the leaching ratios of valuable metals. The variation in the physicochemical properties of the lixiviant and the residue improved the leaching ratio of Ni in the presence of STAC. Kinetics analysis indicated that the leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction.

Anti-evaporation Performance of Water in Soil of Superabsorbent Resin with Fast Water Absorption Rate

Cheng Sha,Zeng Wei,Liu Xiaomei,Zhao Junji,Qiu Xueyan,Lei Ziqiang

Hydroxypropyl cellulose-g-poly (acrylicacid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid)/laterite (HPC-g-P (AA-co-AMPS)/laterite) with excellent water (salt) absorbency, water retention performance, re-swelling property, and fast water absorption rate was prepared by free-radical polymerization. The structure and morphology of the synthetic materials were characterized by FTIR, SEM, and TGA. The water absorbency of superabsorbent resin in different salt solutions was studied, and it was proved that the superabsorbent resin was more sensitive to salt solutions. The swelling kinetic mechanism of superabsorbent resin was explained by pseudo-second-order swelling kinetic model. The effects of the ratio of laterite to loess on water evaporation and the content of superabsorbent resin on soil water evaporation and shrinkage of soil crust were studied.
