Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely present in soil environments and plays a crucial role in controlling the morphology, environmental behavior, and hazards of arsenic (As) in soil. In the Fe-rich red soil of tea plantations, the decomposition of tea tree litter complicates DOM properties, leading to more uncertain interactions between DOM, Fe, and As. This study focused on three tea plantations in Huangshan City to investigate the contents of DOM, Fe, and As in surface red soils (Ferralsols) and establish their correlations. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and PARAFAC analysis methods were used to analyze the DOM components and fluorescence signatures. Additionally, the process and mechanism of the binding of DOM-Fe with As were explored through laboratory experiments on the morphological transformation of As by DOM-Fe. The results showed that the pH values of the soils in the three tea plantations ranged from 3.9 to 5.2, and the entire sample was strongly acidic. The DOM exhibited strong intrinsic properties and low humification, containing three types of humic acid components and one intermediate protein component. The DOC content in the Fe-rich red soil did not have a direct correlation with Fe and As, but the interaction of DOM fractions with Fe significantly influenced the As content. Specifically, the interaction of protein-like fractions with Fe had a more pronounced effect on the As content. The maximum sorption rate of As by DOM was 15.45%, and this rate increased by 49 to 75% with the participation of Fe. In the configuration of the metal electron bridge, Fe acts as a cation, forming a connecting channel between the negatively charged DOM and As, thus enhancing the DOM’s binding capacity to As. DOM-Fe compounds bind As through surface pores and functional groups. These findings provide deeper insights into the influence of DOM on As behavior in Fe-rich soil environments and offer theoretical support for controlling As pollution in red soil.

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal The adsorption and desorption kinetics of antibiotics on natural soils in various aqueous solutions are crucial for understanding their occurrence, transport, and bioavailability in the environment. This study investigated the adsorption and desorption kinetics of three fluoroquinolone carboxylic acids (FQCAs), namely ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin, on red clay soil using batch experiments conducted with pure water, treated wastewater effluent, lake water, river water, and stormwater runoff. The research identified pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and organic suspended solids (OSS) as primary water quality parameters that negatively impacted the adsorbed and desorbed masses of FQCAs at equilibrium. Higher pH, EC, and OSS significantly reduced the initial adsorption rates and adsorption efficiencies and promoted initial desorption and desorption efficiencies. FQCAs adsorption processes exhibited a rapid phase mainly governed by external mass transfer and a slower phase primarily limited by intra-particle diffusion, both influenced by boundary layer effects. The adsorption removal of FQCA's ranged from 65.82 to 98.33%, but desorption was only 1.35–3.09%. These findings highlight the potential of red clay soil as an effective and environmentally friendly adsorbent for mitigating FQCA pollution. Future research should focus on investigating FQCA degradation after adsorption in soil and their transport dynamics under diverse field conditions. Measured q e and average adsorption rate over the first 20 s showed strong negative correlations with pH (pH > 7), electrical conductivity, and organic suspended solids. The q e of ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin was higher in pure water (PW) and lower in treated wastewater and lake water. Both adsorption and desorption exhibited a fast phase and a slower phase. High adsorption capacities and low desorption were observed. Lower desorption was observed in PW.

Predicting the redox behavior of organic contaminants and heavy metals in soils is challenging because there are few soil redox potential ( E h ) models. In particular, current aqueous and suspension models usually show a significant deviation for complex laterites with few Fe(II). Here, we measured the E h of simulated laterites over a range of soil conditions (2450 tests). The impacts of soil pH, organic carbon , and Fe speciation on the Fe activity were quantified as Fe activity coefficients , respectively, using a two-step Universal Global Optimization method. Integrating these Fe activity coefficients and electron transfer terms into the formula significantly improved the correlation of measured and modeled E h values ( R 2 = 0.92), and the estimated E h values closely matched the relevant measured E h values (accuracy R 2 = 0.93). The developed model was further verified with natural laterites, presenting a linear fit and accuracy R 2 of 0.89 and 0.86, respectively. These findings provide compelling evidence that integrating Fe activity into the Nernst formula could accurately calculate the E h if the Fe(III)/Fe(II) couple does not work. The developed model could help to predict the soil E h toward controllable and selective oxidation-reduction of contaminants for soil remediation .

Red soil, the most critical soil resource in tropical/subtropical regions worldwide, faces tremendous threats, including nutrient deficiency, acidification, and heavy metal contamination. There is a great demand for multifunctional eco-materials capable of modifying this situation. Herein, we used widely distributed soil and biomass to develop a zeolite/biochar composite for synergistic red soil remediation and amendment. With the composite material, the Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ remediation efficiencies reached 92.8% and 92.9%, respectively, in stems under optimal conditions. Moreover, the acidity and nutrient deficiency conditions of red soil significantly improved. The atomic-scale interaction mechanism during the remediation and amendment process was elucidated with complementary characterization methods, which revealed that in the zeolite/biochar composite material, zeolite contributes to long-term heavy metal remediation effects. Simultaneously, biochar is responsible for soil quality amendment and short-term heavy metal remediation. Furthermore, for the first time, single-atom heavy metal ions were observed on biochar during the remediation process, indicating the broad distribution of single atoms in the natural environment.

Understanding the distribution of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is necessary for future risk evaluation of DEHP in agricultural soils. This study used 14 C-labeled DEHP to examine its volatilization, mineralization, extractable residues, and non-extractable residues (NERs) incubated in Chinese typical red and black soil with/without Brassica chinensis L. Results showed that after incubated for 60 days, 46.3% and 95.4% of DEHP were mineralized or transformed into NERs in red and black soil, respectively. The distribution of DEHP in humic substances as NER descended in order: humin > fulvic acids > humic acids. DEHP in black soil was more bioavailable, with 6.8% of initial applied radioactivity left as extractable residues at the end of incubation when compared with red soil (54.5%). Planting restrained the mineralization of DEHP by 18.5% and promoted the extractable residues of DEHP by 1.5% for black soil, but no such restrain was observed in red soil. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the distribution of DEHP in different soils and develop the understanding for the risk assessments of PAEs in typical soils. The growing environmental prevalence of liquid organosilicon compounds necessitates a deeper understanding of their soil chemical behaviors and underlying mechanisms. This study systematically investigated the kinetic and thermodynamic characteristics of cadmium (Cd) adsorption by Ultisols clay colloids modified with three typical liquid organosilicons: dimethyldichlorosilane (DMDCS), dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6), and 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570), with comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of pH, ionic strength, coexisting ions, and humic acid (HA) on the adsorption process. Key findings revealed a maximum Cd adsorption capacity of 4150.81 mg/kg by the unmodified clay colloids, with DMDCS reducing adsorption by 4.18 % while D6 and KH-570 enhanced it by 5.38 % and 3.45 %, respectively, and all three compounds retarding the adsorption kinetics; D6 significantly promoted Cd adsorption at higher pH (≥6.0) whereas DMDCS and KH-570 showed negligible pH-dependent effects; high ionic strength (0.1 mol/L NaCl) strongly inhibited Cd adsorption though HA mitigated DMDCS-induced reduction by forming soluble Cd-HA complexes. Mechanistic insights indicated a two-step adsorption process—initial rapid electrostatic attraction and ion exchange with clay-bound cations (e.g., Al 3+ , Fe 3+ ), followed by slow diffusion of Cd 2+ into interlayers and surface complexation with hydroxyl groups—with organosilicon compounds enhancing adsorption via Si O bond hydroxylation to increase reactive site density and formation of stable surface complexes (e.g., Si-O-Cd 2+ /Si-O-Cd(OH) + ). These results highlight the critical role of organosilicon chemistry in modulating heavy metal retention in acidic soils, offering novel perspectives for designing efficient soil passivators to mitigate Cd contamination in Ultisols and analogous environments.

Tetracyclines (TCs) have been widely detected in agricultural soil due to their widespread use in animal husbandry. The impact of low-generation TCs, i.e., the first- and second- generations, on soil ecosystem has attracted widespread attention. However, the dynamic response of soil microbial community to high-generation TCs, i.e., the third- and fourth- generations, remains largely unknown. Herein, we characterized the variations in the composition, diversity and succession of microbial community and the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) under the stress of four generations of TCs in brown soil and red soil. The results demonstrated that the exposure of low- and high- generation TCs consistently decreased the alpha diversity and stimulated the succession rate of microbial community in soil. High-generation TCs strongly shifted microbial community composition by reducing community resilience. The complexity of microbial networks and cross-module associations were strengthened to cope with the stress of high-generation TCs in soil. The abundance of ARGs was exacerbated by 1.75 times in response to the fourth-generation TCs compared to control in brown soil. The potential bacterial hosts of ARGs were more diverse in brown soil exposed to high-generation TCs, but the dominant hosts were not changed. These results highlight the potential ecological risk of the newly developed antibiotics, which is helpful for a comprehensive risk assessment of emerging contaminants.
