Light-induced electrostatic lithography: selective discharge of electrets by utilizing photothermal conversion of Ti3C2Tx MXene

Hui Ma,Haoge Cheng,Xinlei Ma,Sen Wang,Zhuqing Zhou,Yuqiao Chai,Ruoqi Chen,Xinyue Zhang,Yonglin He,Yapei Wang,Yan Li,Xusheng Wang,Rui Li,Ning Ma,Mianqi Xue

Charge/light-related advancements have greatly pushed the development of modern technology, and the relationship between charge and light is worth exploring. While research into the applications of light and charge flow (photoelectric current) is in full swing, studies on the reaction between light and electrostatic charge have made little progress on rare ways to realize photo-stimulated discharge. Herein, we link electrostatic charge and light using a bridge of intense heat, which is produced from the efficient photothermal conversion of Ti3C2Tx MXene. The in situ photothermal conversion and selective thermally stimulated discharge are successfully combined, then novel light-induced electrostatic lithography can be realized on both polymethyl methacrylate glasses and nanofilms. In this process the surface temperature of Ti3C2Tx film can be as high as 300 °C using 808 nm near-infrared irradiation at a power density of 1.7 W cm−2. The combination of light and electrostatic charge is also successfully applied to electrostatic printing and chemical reactions.

Rapid sintering of high-efficiency phosphor-in-glass films for laser-driven light source

Wang Pengfei,Lin Hang,Chen Guoxin,Weng Weitong,Xu Yue,Lin Yi,Xu Ju,Cheng Yao,Wang Yuansheng

The development of advanced high-power-density laser-driven light source requires durable and color-tunable inorganic phosphor-in-glass film composites as color converter. One challenge remains for the phosphor-in-glass film is the thermal erosion and degradation of phosphor, as harsh condition or long duration time is required to densify the film for conventional sintering. Here we develop a rapid thermal annealing technique that achieves high film densification (porosity < 3%) within seconds utilizing high-power (>10 kW) infrared irradiation. As demonstrated by high-resolution electron microscopy observation, a trivial interfacial reaction occurs, leading to almost intact phosphor particles and thus restrained luminous loss. For instance, the red-emitting Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ exhibits a record internal quantum efficiency of 91.2% in the processed film and achieves a luminous flux of 2379 lm and efficacy of 140 lm W −1 after fabricating a phosphor wheel. This method reduces energy consumption, enables high-throughput screening, and offers material universality and design flexibility, paving the way for new opto-functional materials and applications.

Antimicrobial Peptide-Modified Liquid Metal Nanomaterials for Enhanced Antibacterial Photothermal Therapy

Bo Wang,Sen Chen,Weichen Feng,Xiaohui Shan,Xiyu Zhu,Ruizhi Yuan,Yingjie Cao,Linlin Fan,Bo Yuan,Hongzhang Wang,Gang Zhou,Jing Liu

The misuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant “superbugs,” prompting the exploration of alternative antibacterial strategies. This study focuses on the promising avenue of photothermal therapy (PTT). Despite numerous advantages, the clinical applicability of PTT as a sole sterilization strategy is hindered by the necessity for higher temperatures, potentially causing harm to healthy tissues. To overcome this challenge, this study introduces antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to modify the surface of gallium-based liquid metal (LM) nano-antimicrobial agents, thereby enhancing their photothermal antibacterial effects within a lower temperature range. First, a novel LM composite nanomaterial, LM@AMP nanoparticles, is synthesized through a sonication process involving 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[carboxy(polyethylene glycol)], AMP, and LM in an aqueous solution. Herein, AMPs not only contribute to the structural stability of LM nanoparticles but also enhance their selective interaction with bacterial cell membranes. Then, a thorough characterization of LM@AMP nanoparticles is performed, encompassing analyses through electron microscopy, determination of particle size, and assessment of zeta potential. Moreover, the exceptional photothermal properties exhibited by these nanoparticles are validated. Finally, this investigation demonstrates that LM@AMP nanoparticles selectively target bacterial cell membranes, showcasing efficient bactericidal effects (near 100%) at relatively low temperatures under near-infrared irradiation.

Bismuth embedded silica nanoparticles loaded with autophagy suppressant to promote photothermal therapy

Tong Chen,Dong Cen,Zhaohui Ren,Yifan Wang,Xiujun Cai,Jie Huang,Lucy Di Silvio,Xiang Li,Gaorong Han

An unpredicted side effect of photothermal therapy (PTT) is agitated by hyperthermia which results in damage to healthy tissue. Developing PTT platforms, enabling effective tumor ablation under mild irradiation conditions, is of wide interest, but challenging. Here, we investigated bismuth crystals embedded silica ( [email protected] 2 ) nanoparticles , loaded with an autophagy inhibitor (chloroquine, CQ). It was found that SiO 2 effectively prevented the oxidization of Bi nanocrystals in the physiological environment and could serve as a scatter layer to improve NIR absorption, enabling a high photothermal conversion efficiency (~43%) and excellent photostability. Furthermore, the findings indicated that CQ molecules, delivered intracellularly by the particles, significantly weakened the degradation of autolysosomes by lysosome within the tumor cells, thus inducing suppression effect to autophagy and resistance to photothermia. Both in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effects were consequently promoted owing to the combined effects enabled by [email protected] 2 -CQ nanoparticles under mild NIR irradiation conditions. This study demonstrates a potential new PTT platform with superior therapeutic efficacy.

Polydopamine/UiO-66-NH2 induced photothermal antibacterial electrospun membrane for efficient point-of-use drinking water treatment

Jiarong Wang,Shixiong Chen,Qinghao Zeng,Hong Jiang,Haiqing Chang,Tian C. Zhang,Xiaobao Tian,Yingqi Li,Ying Liang,Kai Wang

A miniaturized point-of-use (POU) water treatment device to achieve convenient and efficient water disinfection for remote and post-disaster areas remains a challenge. Herein, such as POU device consisted of a self-polymerized polydopamine (PDA) layer and UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles covered electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane (PAN@PDA@UiO-66-NH 2 ) with bacteria filtration and photothermal antibacterial property is successfully fabricated. The membrane achieves a good interception effect of microorganisms in water because of the synergistic pore interception and adsorption effect. A nearly 100% bacterial retention efficiency was obtained by the PAN@PDA@UiO-66-NH 2 membrane. In addition, the obtained PAN@PDA@UiO-66-NH 2 membrane exhibits nearly 100% photothermal sterilization efficiency against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) under 6 min of 808 nm infrared irradiation (1.21 W). The great photothermal effect comes from the synergistic effect of good photothermal conversion efficiency and absorption of incident light caused by the PDA layer and rough UiO-66-NH 2 particles, respectively. Through the good filtration performance and photothermal effect of the membrane, the filtration for water containing bacteria and sterilization of membrane can be realized. Meanwhile, the membrane fouling caused by bacterial growth can be inhibited. In this way, this innovative membrane has the ability to maintain great filtration and sterilization ability during long-term operation, and thus, having great potential to be used as an effective, convenient, practical, and safe POU water-treatment device.

Light-regulated nitric oxide release from hydrogel-forming microneedles integrated with graphene oxide for biofilm-infected-wound healing

Chi Juan Ma,Yunfan He,Xiaoxuan Jin,Yuchen Zhang,Xiangdong Zhang,Yibao Li,Mimi Xu,Kaiyang Liu,Yao Yao,Feng Lu

Nitric oxide (NO) is an antimicrobial agent that possesses tissue-regenerating ability. However, it also has a short half-life and storage difficulties as disadvantages to its application. To overcome these limitations, a new type of hydrogel-forming microneedle (HFMN) is proposed that can be fabricated by integrating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels (a highly biocompatible drug carrier) with S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO, a NO releasing agent), and graphene oxide (GO) at freezing temperatures (GO-GNSO-HFMNs). Results show that GSNO-GO-HFMNs release NO gradually with increasing temperature and, more importantly, can be warmed up by mild infrared irradiation to accelerate subcutaneous release of NO from the heat-sensitive GSNO. Biofilm-infected wounds often present obstacles to drug delivery, whereas the microneedle (MN) structure disrupts the biofilm and directly releases NO into the wound. This inhibits bacterial growth and increases tissue regeneration while shortening the healing time of biofilm-infected wounds. Therefore, this type of patch can be regarded as a novel, heat-sensitive, light-regulated, NO-releasing MN patch.

Size-dependent photothermal antibacterial activity of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Yujie Gao,Yuanhao Dong,Shuting Yang,Anchun Mo,Xin Zeng,Qianming Chen,Qiang Peng

Developing antibiotics-independent antibacterial materials is of great importance for combating drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MXene (transition metal carbides and nitrides), a class of novel 2D nanomaterials , has shown great potentials in biomedical areas. However, the effect of MXene size on its properties and bioactivity is still unknown. Herein, we report for the first time that the antibacterial photothermal therapy efficacy of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets is size-dependent. Three MXene suspensions with small size of 196 nm (MX-s), medium size of 347 nm (MX-m) and large size of 497 nm (MX-l) were prepared via ultrasonication. Upon NIR irradiation for 5 min, the temperature of MXene suspensions (10 μg/mL) increased to 64, 60 and 56 °C for MX-s, MX-m and MX-l, respectively. Accordingly, the viability loss of MRSA induced by MX-s, MX-m and MX-l under NIR was 93%, 69% and 56%, respectively. The in vivo study in the MRSA-infected mouse model showed that the photothermal therapy efficacy of MX-s was comparable to that of the positive control vancomycin . This is the first report on the size-dependent photothermal effect and photothermal antibacterial activity of MXene, which may guide the development of MXene-based therapeutics in the future. In addition, the drug-free antibacterial therapy has great implications for the treatment of antibiotics-resistant bacteria infections.

Vascular smooth muscle-inspired architecture enables soft yet tough self-healing materials for durable capacitive strain-sensor

Sun FuYao,Liu LongFei,Liu Tong,Wang XueBin,Qi Qi,Hang ZuSheng,Chen Kai,Xu JianHua,Fu JiaJun

Catastrophically mechanical failure of soft self-healing materials is unavoidable due to their inherently poor resistance to crack propagation. Here, with a model system, i.e., soft self-healing polyurea, we present a biomimetic strategy of surpassing trade-off between soft self-healing and high fracture toughness, enabling the conversion of soft and weak into soft yet tough self-healing material. Such an achievement is inspired by vascular smooth muscles, where core-shell structured Galinstan micro-droplets are introduced through molecularly interfacial metal-coordinated assembly, resulting in an increased crack-resistant strain and fracture toughness of 12.2 and 34.9 times without sacrificing softness. The obtained fracture toughness is up to 111.16 ± 8.76 kJ/m 2 , even higher than that of Al and Zn alloys. Moreover, the resultant composite delivers fast self-healing kinetics (1 min) upon local near-infrared irradiation, and possesses ultra-high dielectric constants (~14.57), thus being able to be fabricated into sensitive and self-healing capacitive strain-sensors tolerant towards cracks potentially evolved in service.

Fe/ABTS/PVP nanocomplexes with dual GSH-depleting for photothermal-reinforced catalytic bacterial killing

Chengyang Ban,Hanzhu Shi,Qiong Ding,Bin Wu,Ru Xia,Jiasheng Qian,Ming Cao

In this study, Fe/ABTS/PVP nanocomplexes (named FAPs) as photothermal-reinforced catalytic antibacterial agents were prepared using the coordination-induced assembly of Fe (III), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The redox pairs of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in FAPs can catalyze the H 2 O 2 to hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through Fenton reactions, thereby killing effect on bacteria. The photothermal effect of ABTS •+ in FAPs stimulated by near infrared (NIR) irradiation can further improve the catalytic effect, thereby generating more •OH and achieving better antibacterial activity. What's more, the reduction reaction between glutathione (GSH) and ABTS •+ results in the depletion of the GSH level, the redox pair of Fe(II)/Fe(III) is also beneficial in the consumption of GSH. This dual depletion of GSH further expands the intracellular oxidative stress. Thus, the integrated function of photothermal effect, catalytic property, and dual depletion of GSH by FAPs provides a new strategy for fighting against bacterial infections.

Chitosan-modified molybdenum selenide mediated efficient killing of Helicobacter pylori and treatment of gastric cancer

Xinyuan Zhang,Yongkang Lai,Liang Zhang,Zheng Chen,Jiulong Zhao,Shige Wang,Zhaoshen Li

Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) is one of the major causes of gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric cancer. However, the acidic environment of the stomach and H. pylori resistance severely impair the antimicrobial efficacy of oral drugs. Here, a biocompatible chitosan-modified molybdenum selenide (MoSe 2 @CS) was designed for the simultaneous photothermal treatment of H. pylori infection and gastric cancer. MoSe 2 @CS showed a photothermal conversion efficiency was as high as 45.7 %. In the H. pylori -infected mice model, MoSe 2 @CS displayed a high bacteriostasis ratio of 99.9 % upon near-infrared irradiation. The antimicrobial functionality was also proved by transcriptomic sequencing study, which showed that MoSe 2 @CS combined with NIR laser irradiation modulated the gene expression of a variety of H. pylori bioprocesses, including cell proliferation and inflammation-related pathways. Further gut flora analysis results indicated that MoSe 2 @CS mediated PTT of H. pylori did not affect the homeostasis of gut flora, which highlights its advantages over traditional antibiotic therapy. In addition, MoSe 2 @CS exhibited a good photothermal ablation effect and significantly inhibited gastric tumor growth in vitro and in vivo . The comprehensive application of MoSe 2 @CS in the PTT of H. pylori infection and gastric cancer provides a new avenue for the clinical treatment of H. pylori infection and related diseases.

Facile fabrication of a near-infrared responsive nanocarrier for spatiotemporally controlled chemo-photothermal synergistic cancer therapy

Hao Wan,Yi Zhang,Zheyi Liu,Guiju Xu,Guang Huang,Yongsheng Ji,Zhichao Xiong,Quanqing Zhang,Jing Dong,Weibing Zhang,Hanfa Zou

Remote-controlled nanocarriers for drug delivery are of great promise to provide timely, sensitive and spatiotemporally selective treatments for cancer therapy. Due to convenient and precise manipulation, deep penetration through tissues and excellent biocompatibility, near-infrared (NIR) irradiation is a preferred external stimulus for triggering the release of loaded drugs. In this work, for spatiotemporally controlled chemo-photothermal synergistic cancer therapy, a NIR responsive nanocarrier was fabricated using reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rNGO) decorated with mesoporous silica shell and the subsequent functionalization of the thermoresponsive polymer brushes (pNIPAM-co-pAAm) at the outlet of the silica pore channels. rNGO, which combined with the mesoporous silica shell provide a high loading capacity for anticancer drugs (doxorubicin, DOX), was assigned to sense NIR irradiation for the manipulation of pNIPAM-co-pAAm valve to control the diffusion of loaded DOX. Under NIR irradiation, rNGO would generate heat, which could not only elevate the surrounding temperature over the low critical solution temperature (LCST) of pNIPAM-co-pAAm to open the thermoresponsive polymer valve and promote the diffusion of DOX, but also kill the cancer cells through the hypothermia effect. By manipulating NIR irradiation, the nanocarrier exhibited efficiently controlled release of loaded DOX both in the buffer and in living HeLa cells (the model cancer cells), providing powerful and site-targeted treatments, which can be attributed to synergistic effects of chemo-photothermal therapy. To sum up, this novel nanocarrier is an excellent drug delivery platform in remote-controlled chemo-photothermal synergistic cancer therapy via NIR irradiation.
