Chopped quartz fiber-reinforced fused silica (SiO 2 f /SiO 2 ) composites were fabricated by stereolithography . The fiber orientation characteristics and crack distributions after the debinding process of the green bodies were investigated. The results showed that the distribution of fibers presented orientation characteristics; additionally, the number of cracks after debinding decreased as the fiber content increased and the cracks oriented along the fiber orientation. The mechanical properties of SiO 2 f /SiO 2 ceramics with different fiber contents were also considered. As a result, a compressive strength of 51.2 MPa and flexural strength of 24.3 MPa were achieved for the SiO 2 f /SiO 2 ceramic with 4 wt% fiber, and a sintered cambered structure with a size over 150 mm × 150 mm × 3 mm was fabricated successfully without cracking and deformation for the SiO 2 f /SiO 2 composites with a fiber content of 4 wt% and 6 wt%.

Electrospinning has contributed substantially to the construction of nanofibrous scaffolds for potential tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. However, conventional electrospinning only has the ability to generate and collect nanofiber scaffolds with a randomly oriented fibrous pattern, which lack the necessary cell alignment guidance function. In this study, a novel electrospinning fiber-collecting device was designed and developed by setting a series of small pin-ring-structured collectors on a large plain plate. Specifically, we demonstrated that the pin-ring-structured collectors, which were constructed by inserting a metal pin into the center of a metal ring, could collect the as-electrospun nanofibers with radially oriented structures in an innovative manner. We first investigated the suitable polymeric concentration for electrospinning poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and the optimum electrospinning concentration of PHBV was found to be 12% (w/v) PHBV dissolved in hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol (HFIP). Then, 12% (w/v) PHBV solution was electrospun into radially oriented nanofiber scaffolds using our novel electrospinning strategy, and their various performances were further compared with conventionally randomly oriented nanofiber scaffolds that were also produced from 12% (w/v) PHBV solution. The results showed that the radially oriented PHBV nanofiber scaffolds exhibited obviously enhanced mechanical properties and decreased hydrophobicity compared with the randomly oriented PHBV nanofiber scaffold controls. Importantly, the biological properties of radially oriented PHBV nanofiber scaffolds were also demonstrated to be enhanced, compared with randomly oriented PHBV nanofiber scaffolds, by effectively inducing cell alignment and significantly promoting cell proliferation. In sum, the present study indicates that our as-prepared nanofiber scaffolds with a radially oriented pattern are of great interest for advanced applications, such as wound dressings and tissue-engineered scaffolds. Keywords:electrospinning;nanofiber scaffold;fiber alignment;biocompatibility;biomaterials

Utilizing the elementary building blocks of plant cell walls, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), can give final materials excellent mechanical properties. For instance, CNF-based wet-spun fibers exhibit superior mechanical properties, surpassing their source materials, plant fibers. Such high mechanical performance is closely related to CNFs’ orientation; thus, most previous research has focused on optimizing spinning rates or introducing post-stretching to enhance this parameter. In this study, the effects of the CNF surface properties on CNF orientation were investigated, which are often neglected in the literature: 1) during extrusion, the CNF surface properties affect the rheological behaviors of the spinning suspension, which in turn influences CNFs’ orientation potential; 2) during coagulation, they govern the affinity between CNFs and antisolvents, thereby determining the shrinkage of CNF gels; 3) during drying, they directly impact capillary forces induced by the evaporation of antisolvents, which significantly determine the CNF orientation in the end products. Overall, this fundamental study provides deeper insights into the assembling behavior of colloidal nanoparticles such as CNFs, which can advance the development of high-performance man-made fibers.

With the massive consumption of energy resources and increasingly severe environmental problems, the development of renewable, environmentally friendly, highly efficient energy conversion and storage devices has become a top priority. Here, a microstructure modulation strategy was proposed to fabricate the oriented regenerated cellulose (ORC) dielectric composites with outstanding mechanical and dielectric properties via a combination of dissolution, crosslinking, stretching, and hot-pressing techniques. ORC films with a stretch ratio of 100 % (ORC-100 film) exhibit a significant increase in displacement values (2.96 µC/cm 2 ), breakdown strength (404.04 MV/m), dielectric constant (14.37 at 1 kHz), and energy density (3.42 J/cm 3 at 250 MV/m) as compared to the unstretched regenerated cellulose films. These enhancements are attributed to the anisotropic alignment of cellulose chains and the enhanced crystalline phase of cellulose II, both of which are significantly higher in ORC-100 film. This work offers a feasible and serviceable approach for the development of environmentally friendly cellulose dielectric composites with high performance.

Conductivity and alignment of scaffolds are two primary factors influencing the efficacy of nerve repair. Herein, conductive composite fibers composed of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different orientation degrees are prepared by electrospinning at various rotational speeds (0, 500, 1000, and 2000 rpm), and meanwhile the synergistic promotion mechanism of aligned topography and electrical stimulation on neural regeneration is fully demonstrated. Under an optimized rotational speed of 1000 rpm, the electrospun PCL fiber exhibits orientated structure at macroscopic (mean deviation angle = 2.78°) or microscopic crystal scale (orientation degree = 0.73), decreased contact angle of 99.2° ± 4.9°, and sufficient tensile strength in both perpendicular and parallel directions to fiber axis (1.13 ± 0.15 and 5.06 ± 0.98 MPa). CNTs are introduced into the aligned fiber for further improving conductivity (15.69–178.63 S m −1 ), which is beneficial to the oriented growth of neural cells in vitro as well as the regeneration of injured sciatic nerves in vivo. On the basis of robust cell induction behavior, optimum sciatic nerve function index, and enhanced remyelination/axonal regeneration, such conductive PCL/CNTs composite fiber with optimized fiber alignment may serve as instructive candidates for promoting the scaffold- and cell-based strategies for neural repair.

Composite insulators for high-voltage power grids are subject to multiple constraints concerning thermal conductivity, mechanical load-bearing capacity, and electrical insulation reliability. Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers are considered an ideal reinforcement phase owing to their excellent mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical insulation properties, but their smooth and inert surface results in poor interfacial adhesion with the epoxy resin matrix. Moreover, the lack of PBO fibers alignment control limits the full exploitation of their thermal conductivity for high-voltage insulation equipment. In this study, a synergistic strategy was developed to modify the PBO fiber surface with aminated graphene oxide (GO-PPDA) and to align the PBO fibers to enhance the interfacial, mechanical, and thermal properties of the resulting fiber-reinforced composite. In experiments, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was increased to a maximum of 57.62 MPa, representing a 54 % improvement over untreated fibers. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed, at the atomic scale, that the interfacial binding energy was significantly enhanced after GO-PPDA modification. The thermal conductivity of the composite with aligned fibers reached 1.531 W m −1 K −1 , which is dramatically higher than that of its randomly oriented counterpart.Optimized amination also improved breakdown strength to 32.5 kV mm −1 while effectively suppressing dielectric loss. Moreover, electrostatic field simulations confirmed that the introduced uniform GO-PPDA contributes to electric field homogenization. Furthermore, the flexural and tensile strengths of the composite were enhanced by 147.9 % and 224.4 %, respectively. This study provides a systematic design strategy for the development of high-performance insulating core rods for composite insulators.

The ex vivo replication of the highly helical and fibril structures of load-bearing soft tissue is a challenging goal for the study of hydrogels. Inspired by nature, we prepared tissue-like physical gels based on curdlan and gelatin by self-assembly. The hybrid gels have a flexible fibril-matrix architecture, and the fibril orientation is highly tunable. The tensile strength of the gels can be tuned from ∼1.1 to ∼16.5 MPa. The coil–helix transition and nanofibril formation process in the self-assembly system was thoroughly investigated. These helical gels exhibit excellent cell compatibility, which supports adhesion and oriented growth of neural cells. Furthermore, the oriented nanofibrils in the gel are found to be associated with an upregulated expression of regeneration-related genes like N-cadherin (Cdh2) and neural growth factor (NGF). Owing to the strength and biomimetic structure, these gels have great potential in tissue engineering applications.

Carbon nanotube–polydimethylsiloxane (CNT–PDMS) composites hold significant potential using in flexible electronics and sensors, owing to their remarkable synergy between electrical conductivity and flexibility. However, current fabrication techniques face critical challenges such as the limited structural versatility of conventionally thermally cured PDMS, and the uneven dispersion and agglomeration of CNTs, hindering their fabrication and performance. This study tries to strike a balance between structural design flexibility and functional performance enhancement through the implementation of electric field-assisted strategies, offering a novel approach for the customization of flexible electronic devices. The electric field-induced alignment mechanism of CNTs and fibers within PDMS composites is studied. A comprehensive analysis of CNTs and fiber alignment in the PDMS solution is conducted, followed by characterization of CNT–PDMS. Ternary composites consisting of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS)-structured carbon fibers and CNT-reinforced PDMS are fabricated by integrating liquid crystal display 3D-printed sacrificial templates with electric field-assisted alignment. Different TPMS structures and the effect of relative density on the compressive properties of the composites are studied.
