N Evolution and Physiochemical Structure Changes in Chars during Co-Pyrolysis: Effects of Abundance of Glucose in Fiberboard

Deliang Xu,Liu Yang,Ming Zhao,Yu Song,Karnowo,Hong Zhang,Xun Hu,Hongqi Sun,Shu Zhang

The simple incineration of wood-based panels (WBPs) waste generates a significant amount of NOx, which has led to urgency in developing a new method for treating the N-containing biomass residues. This work aims to examine the N evolution and physiochemical structural changes during the co-pyrolysis of fiberboard and glucose, where the percentage of glucose in the feedstock was varied from 0% to 70%. It was found that N retention in chars was monotonically increased with increasing use of glucose, achieving ~60% N fixation when the glucose accounted for 70% in the mixture. Pyrrole-N (N-5) and Pyridine-N (N-6) were preferentially formed at high ratios of glucose to fiberboard. While the relevant importance of volatile–char interactions to N retention and transformation could be observed, the volatile–volatile reactions from the two feedstocks played a vital role in the increase in abundance of glucose. With the introduction of glucose, the porous structure and porosity in chars from the co-pyrolysis were dramatically altered, whereas the devolatilization of glucose tended to generate larger pores than the fiberboard. The insignificant changes in carbon structure of all chars revealed by Raman spectroscopy would practically allow us to apply the monosaccharides to the WBPs for regulating N evolution without concerns about its side effects for char carbon structures.Keywords:nitrogen;evolution;co-pyrolysis;fiberboard;glucose

Investigation on co-gasification of N-rich fiberboard and glucose: Nitrogen evolution and changes in char properties

Ming Zhao,Jun Sun,Muhammad Asif Akhtar,Shu Zhang,Juntao Wei,Deliang Xu,Xun Hu,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Hong Zhang

Waste wood-based panels (WBPs) with high nitrogen content is a typical kind of industrial biomass waste, and a large amount of NO x will be generated during its incineration treatment. Therefore, this work is aimed at studying the retention and conversion characteristics of nitrogen in gasification char of WBPs. For fixing more nitrogen in char, co-gasification experiments of fiberboard (FB, the main kind of WBPs) and glucose were carried out using a fixed bed reactor , and the subsequent analysis was conducted by element analyzer, XPS , SEM and BET. The results show that the addition of glucose could efficiently fix nitrogen in gasification char , the nitrogen retention ratios of FB-glucose char under N 2 and CO 2 atmosphere were 2.6–5.6 times and 1.4–2.0 times greater than that of individual FB char, respectively, due to the enhanced Maillard reaction. As the temperature increased, the portions of N-5 and N-6 decreased along with the formation of N-Q and N–O. Moreover, the addition of glucose led to the delay of the conversion from N-5 and N-6 to N-Q and N–O in char. BET results demonstrate that the surface area and total pore volume of co-gasified char were significantly lower than those of individual FB gasified char. The glucose had a negative effect on the pore structure development of co-gasified char. These results could offer strategies on reducing NO x emission in biomass thermal conversion and regulating nitrogen functional groups in biochar.

Preparation of a Superhydrophobic Coating on Carbon Fiber Board and Study of Its Dust Resistance and Anti-icing Properties

Qian Su,Kangli Yang,Zhiqing Yuan,Cancheng Li,Shoutong Meng,Xuyu Long,Rui He

To address the poor water resistance and dust susceptibility of carbon fiber board, a simple and efficient spraying method was used to prepare a superhydrophobic coating on the carbon fiber board that was resistant to dust and ice. First, a hydrolyzed solution of KH550 was applied and cured to the carbon fiber board. Then, a solution was prepared by mixing silicone rubber (XC-107) with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) in ethyl acetate. This solution was divided into three glass beakers. The first beaker kept the original solution unchanged. Nanometer silica (Nano-SiO2) was introduced into the solution in the second glass beaker, while ethyl acetate was added to dilute the solution in the third glass beaker. Finally, the prepared solutions were sequentially sprayed onto the surface of the carbon fiber board according to the order of the glass beakers. The results indicate that the dust removal efficiency of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board reaches 98.36%, which is an improvement of 9.45% compared to ordinary carbon fiber board, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 158°. Meanwhile, in the anti-icing test, the icing time of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board is delayed by more than four times compared to ordinary carbon fiber board. Compared to other similar superhydrophobic carbon fiber boards, this superhydrophobic carbon fiber board features a simple and efficient preparation method, is easy to produce on a large scale, has low cost, uses commonly available materials, and offers strong scalability while possessing characteristics such as dust resistance, anti-icing, abrasion resistance, and sandstorm resistance. This indicates that the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board can be used in many different fields, such as structural components of aircraft and spacecraft, body and interior parts of vehicles, bicycle frames, badminton and tennis rackets, bridges, medical devices, enclosures, and components for electronic products, bulletproof armor, drones, and more.

Retention and transformation of nitrogen in hydrochars from co-hydrothermal carbonization of fiberboard and glucose

Jinchuan Wang,Li Zhang,Jinping Weng,Juntao Wei,Deliang Xu,Bin Li,Shu Zhang,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Electo Silva Lora,Hong Zhang

The retention and transformation of nitrogen in hydrochars prepared from co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) of fiberboard (FB) and glucose were mainly investigated in this study. This study showed that more than 90 wt% nitrogen has transferred into aqueous solution at 180–220 °C during the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of FB. When the HTC temperatures were higher than 220 °C, some dissolved nitrogen recombined into hydrochars due to the enhancement of nitrogen fixation reactions (Maillard reactions). The addition of glucose could significantly increase nitrogen retention rate in hydrochars, which was due to abundant oxygen-containing intermediates (5-HMF, furfural, etc.) formed in aqueous phase by the hydrothermal decomposition of glucose. Besides, the hydrochars with more microspheres formed on the surface could apparently enhance nitrogen fixation due to the increased contacting area. In Co-HTC, the temperature range of 220–280 °C favored the nitrogen retention in hydrochars. Additionally, nitrogen retention rate increased significantly with increasing residence time and mixture ratio of glucose in a certain extent. While the heterocyclic-N was the main nitrogen functional group in hydrochars and it transformed from pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N to quaternary-N with higher HTC temperatures and longer residence times, additionally, some amine-N was clearly formed when the nitrogen returned from the aqueous phase into hydrochars.

Novel method of fabricating lightweight thermally insulation fibrous composites for energy saving

Danyang Qiu,Shujing Li,Yuanbing Li,Zhen Cai,Chengzhen Fu,ChangDong Wei

Fiberboard (FB) is extensively utilized in heat-insulating refractory materials owing to its lightweight nature and excellent resistance to high temperatures. Nevertheless, the inadequate mechanical properties and limited dimensional stability of FB hinder its further application. The vacuum filtration was utilized in this study to manufacture inorganically modified insulation FB, incorporating plus fiber/1260 fiber and silica sol as the primary constituents and sepiolite powder (HS) as the modifier. The experimental results show that the fabricated samples exhibited extremely high porosity (75.3%–90.2%) and low thermal conductivity (.063–.15 W m −1 K −1 , 200–800°C). The fibers were arranged in a three-dimensional structure, overlapping with each other, and the silica sol adhered to the fibers, forming a spatial mesh structure through cross-linking. Importantly, the incorporation of HS was effective in controlling the agglomeration of the silica sol, leading to a more uniform distribution within the fibers. Additionally, the study found that the mechanical properties (high hardness (64–72 HA)) and high-temperature durability of the FBs were enhanced due to the flocculant modification. This study highlights promising prospects for industrial applications and offers a cost-effective admixture for modifying and preparing high-performance FBs, which is expected to see broad adoption in thermal insulation and energy conservation applications.

Investigation on nitrogen migration and transformation during hydrothermal conversion of glucose and xylose in N-rich solution recycled from hydrothermal treatment of fiberboard

Li Zhang,Yi Wei,Yuan Yin,Xiang Liu,Shu Zhang,Lei Shi,Juntao Wei,Hong Zhang,Alexander N. Kozlov,Maxim V. Penzik,Deliang Xu

Nitrogen migration and transformation have been extensively studied during the thermochemical conversion of biomass, particularly N-rich biomass, due to concerns about nitrogen oxides pollution or the preparation of N-doped carbon materials. Nitrogen in fiberboard was extracted into an aqueous solution through low-temperature hydrothermal treatment to prepare the recycled aqueous solution. Subsequently, hydrothermal conversions of glucose and xylose were conducted in the recycled solution. The migration and transformation of nitrogen between hydrochars and aqueous phase were investigated. The results showed that the nitrogen retention rates of glucose hydrochars were higher than those of xylose hydrochars at low temperatures. As the temperature increased, the nitrogen retention rates of glucose and xylose hydrochars tended to converge, reaching their highest value at 220 °C. In hydrochars, nitrogen had a high content and was widely distributed on the surface of the carbon microspheres. The nitrogen content did not change significantly with increasing temperatures, but the nitrogen functional groups tended to become more thermostable. In addition, the char yields of glucose and xylose in fiberboard recycled solution were significantly higher than that in the ultrapure water at low temperatures, which indicates that the introduction of nitrogen promotes the formation of hydrochars. These findings favored the study on the nitrogen migration and transformation during hydrothermal conversions of lignocellulose in a N-rich environment.

Effects of Glucose on Nitrogen Retention and Transformation during Copyrolysis with Fiberboard Waste

Deliang Xu,Liu Yang,Ming Zhao,Mengyao Guo,Xun Hu,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Hong Zhang,Shu Zhang

The fiberboard waste with about 10% adhesive as bonding materials will release a large amount of NOx into the atmosphere when being used for energy resources. To mitigate the emission, it is desirable to convert the waste biomass into material-based products, so that the N species could be possibly retained in the solids without being emitted into the air. Thus, this study aims to examine the effects of glucose addition on the N retention and migration in chars during the copyrolysis with fiberboard wastes, especially considering the N-doped solid char as a potential high value functional carbon material. The pyrolysis experiments were mainly conducted in a fixed-bed quartz reactor at various temperatures, and the resultant chars were subjected to XPS analysis and other characterizations. It was found that the introduction of glucose has significantly increased the N retentions by 2–3 times at all the examined temperatures compared to the pyrolysis of fiberboard alone. During the copyrolysis, the relative abundance of amine-N in char at 400 °C has greatly decreased, while 500 °C has seen only N-5 and N-6 remaining in the char. Therefore, the copyrolysis of fiberboard waste and glucose could considerably enhance the N retentions in chars as well as vary the transformation of N occurring forms by the reactions between the adhesive-derived volatiles and the O-containing groups from the decomposition of glucose.

Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine Modified Waste Fiberboard Activated Carbon for Enhanced Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium

Rongrong Pan,Jixin Zou,Yue Li,Xiaojuan Jin

The objective of this work is to prepare a hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HBPEI) grafted activated carbon obtained from waste fiberboard for effectively removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The waste fiberboard activated carbon (WFAC) was modified by HBPEI and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GA). The optimal modified conditions were as follows: HBPEI molecular weight 10,000 g/mol, HBPEI/WFAC (w/w) 0.5, GA concentration 0.25%, reaction time 60 min. Both pristine WFAC and HBPEI–WFAC were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and Roman spectra. XPS data showed the obvious increase in nitrogen (from 0.72% to 6.65%) after modification. The results of FTIR and XPS suggested that HBPEI was chemically bonded onto the WFAC by the glutaraldehyde (GA) between the amine groups of WFAC and that of HBPEI. HBPEI was also probably grafted onto WFAC through the intermolecular interaction between the carboxylate groups of WFAC and the amine groups of HBPEI. However, the BET surface area of modified WFAC declined slightly (about 200 m2/g). The ID/IG of modified WFAC decreased from 0.92 to 0.82, which indicated that the modification process had no significant effect on the graphitization of activated carbon. The adsorption property onto HBPEI–WFAC and the factors containing contact time, pH value, and Cr(VI) concentration were also investigated. Analysis of the Cr(VI) adsorption data was well simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and maximum Cr(VI) uptake of HBPEI–WFAC was 500 mg/g.

An environmentally friendly superhydrophobic coating with high-temperature resistance, UV resistance, and abrasion resistance was fabricated on carbon fiber board via an aqueous phase polymer dispersion system

Qian Su,Kangli Yang,Zhiqing Yuan,Cancheng Li,Shoutong Meng,Xuyu Long,Rui He

Aiming at the problems of carbon fiber board (CFB), which is not waterproof and has poor UV resistance, a superhydrophobic coating with UV resistance and high-temperature resistance was innovatively prepared on CFB using an aqueous-phase polymer dispersion system by a highly efficient spraying method. The whole preparation system is highly environmentally friendly and safe. The results showed that the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board (SKCFB) could resist UV up to 85 h, could withstand high temperatures up to 300 °C, and had a water contact angle (WCA) of 159°. In addition, the abrasion resistance of SKCFB is 140 and 180 cycles under the action of 800 grit and 1200 grit sandpaper, respectively, for a load of 100 g, and 110 cycles under the action of 600 grit sandpaper. When carrying a load of 500 g, the 600 mesh, 800 mesh, and 1200 mesh sandpaper can be used for 40, 60, and 80 cycles of abrasion resistance, respectively. Compared with other samples of the same type, this SKCFB is simpler to prepare, has a greener and safer preparation route, and has better performance, plus the ability to control the appearance color as desired. This study provides a novel green, simple, and fast strategy for preparing superhydrophobic coatings on CFBs. At the same time, it opens a new path for preparing superhydrophobic coatings and enhances their application in industry.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Mg/Al Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) Coatings on Medium Density Fiberboards (MDFs) with Flame Retardancy

Zhe Wang,Xiaoping Shen,Temeng Qian,Kang Xu,Qingfeng Sun,Chunde Jin

The hydrophilicity and flammability of fiberboards have limited their real-life applications. In this study, a facile strategy for preparing the multifunctional coatings with superhydrophobicity and flame retardancy on medium density fiberboards (MDFs) has been investigated. The superhydrophobic and flame-retardant coating on the MDF surface was obtained by depositing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS)-modified Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) particles step by step. The as-prepared coating exhibited superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle (WCA) of ~155° and good self-cleaning properties. Furthermore, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of the superhydrophobic MDFs increased by 60.4% as compared to that of the pristine MDFs, showing improved flame retardancy. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of MDFs decreased after coating with PDMS@FDTS-Mg/Al LDH, suggesting that the superhydrophobic coating decreased the fire growth speed and risk of fire hazard of MDFs. This coating with multiple functions opens a new avenue for the protection and functionalization of MDFs.Keywords:medium density fiberboard;Mg/Al LDH;FDTS;superhydrophobicity;flame retardancy

The effects of interactions between fiberboard-derived volatiles and glucose-derived biochar on N retention and char structure during the decoupled pyrolysis of fiberboard and glucose using a double-bed reactor

Liu Yang,Mengyao Guo,Yiwen Qian,Deliang Xu,Mortaza Gholizadeh,Karnowo,Hong Zhang,Xun Hu,Shu Zhang

This study aims to examine the capability of nascent glucose-derived char on absorbing and solidifying N-containing gas species from the pyrolysis of fiberboard . A specially designed double-bed quartz reactor was used to carry out the experimental work. The N chemical forms and carbon structure in chars were characterized using XPS and Raman techniques, respectively. The results clearly indicate that the glucose char could effectively retain N-containing volatiles, especially at low temperatures due to its high content in O functional groups. The occurring forms of N inherently existing in fiberboard-derived char showed different transforming patterns from those in the glucose chars where the N compounds (e.g., amide-N) were externally obtained by intensive volatile-char interactions. The in-situ DRIFT analysis showed that the amino groups released from fiberboard may react with the aldehyde groups containing in the glucose char and form N-doped aromatic rings . Additionally, although the increase in carrier gas (thus decreasing the volatile-char interaction time) did not affect the N retention, the carbon structure revealed by Raman analysis dramatically altered.

Bioinspired fiberboard-and-mortar structural nanocomposite based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires with high mechanical performance

Han-Ping Yu,Ying-Jie Zhu,Zhi-Chao Xiong,Bing-Qiang Lu

Natural materials have enlightened us to assemble brittle building blocks into specific architectures with both high strength and toughness. As the main inorganic component of the bone and tooth, hydroxyapatite (HAP) materials have a high biocompatibility, but usually have a high brittleness. It is still a big challenge to artificially prepare biomaterials with the combination of high strength and high toughness, similar to natural materials constructed with brittle HAP building blocks. In this work, considering that enamel and nacre are typical examples of natural biomaterials with high strength and high toughness, respectively, we combine the structural merits of both enamel (highly ordered bundles) and nacre (brick-and-mortar structure) to construct a new kind of highly ordered ultralong HAP nanowire fiberboard-and-mortar alignment hierarchical structure (HFMAS) by the multiscale and multilevel assemblies of ultralong HAP nanowires from the nanoscale to microscale to macroscale and from one-dimensional (1-D) to 2-D to 3-D levels. The as-prepared hierarchical HFMAS nanocomposite can achieve a confluence of strengthening and toughening mechanisms of enamel and nacre, and exhibits superior mechanical properties such as high strength (308 MPa), Young's modulus (34.7 GPa), and toughness (4.77 MPa·m 1/2 ), which are far better than those of many synthetic HAP-organic composites and other materials reported in the literature. Moreover, the as-prepared HFMAS nanocomposite exhibits a low density (1.8 g cm −3 ), good resistance to great impact, good damping capacity and durability. The as-prepared HFMAS nanocomposite is promising for various applications such as the protective armor, mechanical damping, and building materials.
