Biomaterial-based therapy that can restore annulus fibrosus (AF) function in early stage and promote endogenous repair of AF tissues is a promising approach for AF tissue repair. In this study, we established a genipin-crosslinked decellularized AF hydrogels (g-DAF-G) that are injectable and could manifest better in situ formability than noncrosslinked decellularized AF hydrogel, while preserving the capacity of directing differentiation of human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) towards AF cells. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining, and so forth showed that the majority of cellular components were removed, whereas extracellular matrix and microstructure were largely preserved. The storage modulus increased from 465.5 ± 9.4 Pa to 3.29 ± 0.24 MPa after 0.02% genipin crosslinking of decellularized AF hydrogels (DAF-G) to form g-DAF-G. AF-specific genes (COL1A1, COL5A1, TNMD, IBSP, FBLN1) were significantly higher in DAF-G and g-DAF-G groups than that in control group after 21 days of culturing. g-DAF-G significantly restored nucleus pulposus water content and preserved intervertebral structure in vivo. Summarily, we produced a novel AF regeneration biomaterial, g-DAF-G, which exhibited well biocompatibility, great bioactivity, and much higher mechanical strength than DAF-G. This study will provide an easy and fast therapeutic alternative to repair AF injuries or tears.

Annulus fibrosus (AF) repair remains a challenge because of its limited self-healing ability. Endogenous repair strategies combining scaffolds and growth factors show great promise in AF repair. Although the unique and beneficial characteristics of decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) in tissue repair have been demonstrated, the poor mechanical property of ECM hydrogels largely hinders their applications in tissue regeneration. In the present study, we combined polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) and decellularized annulus fibrosus matrix (DAFM) to develop an injectable, photocurable hydrogel for AF repair. We found that the addition of PEGDA markedly improved the mechanical strength of DAFM hydrogels while maintaining their porous structure. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) was further incorporated into PEGDA/DAFM hydrogels, and it could be continuously released from the hydrogel. The in vitro experiments showed that TGF-β1 facilitated the migration of AF cells. Furthermore, PEGDA/DAFM/TGF-β1 hydrogels supported the adhesion, proliferation, and increased ECM production of AF cells. In vivo repair performance of the hydrogels was assessed using a rat AF defect model. The results showed that the implantation of PEGDA/DAFM/TGF-β1 hydrogels effectively sealed the AF defect, prevented nucleus pulposus atrophy, retained disc height, and partially restored the biomechanical properties of disc. In addition, the implanted hydrogel was infiltrated by cells resembling AF cells and well integrated with adjacent AF tissue. In summary, findings from this study indicate that TGF-β1-supplemented DAFM hydrogels hold promise for AF repair.

Fire hazards are a primary concern in aircraft accidents, and controlling combustible materials is pivotal in managing cabin fire risks. This work aims to elucidate the impact of widespread measures that introduce phosphorus-based flame retardants (PFRs) on the fire safety of carbon fiber epoxy composites (CF/EP). Firstly, the hazardous indicators for flame retardant CF/EP composites exhibit two categories of optimization and degradation, which are caused by the intrinsic feature, pyrolysis characteristics and chemical valence states of PFRs. Secondly, the fire hazards of composites are assessed by fusing the analytic network process and information weights guided by Nash Equilibrium theory. The method combines the merits of subjective and objective weights from dimensions of intrinsic hazards, interrelationships and data dispersion of indicators. Finally, the assessed fire hazard rankings under 35 and 65 kW/m 2 both are EP > CF/EP16%DOPO-HQ > CF/EP > CF/EP7%DPO. In conclusion, DOPO-HQ (+1) primarily increases the fire hazard of CF/EP due to gas-phase flame-retardant effects, while DPO (+3) predominantly reduces the fire hazard of CF/EP by contributing to condensed-phase effects. This work highlights the contradictory effects of PFRs on the fire safety of CF/EP composites due to structure and thermal stability. The proposed ANP and IW hybridization method provides a theoretical foundation for selecting flame retardants and assessing material fire hazards comprehensively.

Carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CF/EP) are significant components of engineering materials in defense, aerospace and transportation field. Nevertheless, one of the main obstacles to improve mechanical strength of CF/EP is delamination. In this study, a kind of hydroxyl-functionalized block co-polyimide (BOH) filming as interleaves achieved multi-scale synergistic toughening, including reaction-induced phase separation structures at nano-scale and plastic deformation of BOH enrichment at micro-scale, which aims to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness of CF/EP composites effectively. As a result, mode I interlaminar toughness at initial (G IC-NL ) and at propagation (G IC-Prop ) of CF/EP laminates interleaved with 7 μm BOH film (CF-EP/BOH7) are increased by 126 % and 183 %, respectively. CF-EP/BOH7 laminates exhibit improvement of 206 % in mode II interlaminar toughness. This multi-scale toughening method initiates a new way for improving the interlaminar toughness of CF/EP composites.

The low interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites limit their applications in harsh environments. Synergetic improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of CF/EP is a challenging research job. In this paper, the surface of CF/EP prepregs was coated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and PEEK, and then the modified CF/EP laminates were prepared by compression molding process. The effects of MWCNTs and PEEK on the mechanical properties and thermal properties of CF/EP laminates were investigated. The results showed that the type II interlaminar fracture toughness, impact strength, and thermal conductivity of the CF/EP laminates synergistically modified by 0.5 wt% MWCNTs, and 2 wt% PEEK reached 1404 J/m 2 , 277 J/m 2 , 0.89 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100°C, which were 81%, 42% and 82% higher than that of unmodified CF/EP laminate, respectively. And thermal stability of CF/EP laminate was improved. The addition of MWCNTs and PEEK reduces the loss factor of CF/EP laminates. This work is of great significance to realize the integration of structure and function of composite materials in the high-performance applications.

Abstract In this study, novel carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites with anti-icing properties were made using a combination of octadecylamine modification and hard templating. First, the octadecylamine-modified epoxy resin was sprayed on the surface of CF/EP prepreg. Hierarchical micro/nanostructures were formed on the surfaces of the composites through hot pressing with aluminum templates that had been modified by sandblasting and anodizing. The resulting composites were superhydrophobic, with static contact angles of up to 155° and sliding angles as low as 8°. Superhydrophobicity was maintained after abrading with 400 grit SiC sandpaper. The anti-icing properties of the composites were quantified by measuring droplet freezing time and ice adhesion force. Compared to untreated CF/EP, the surface treatments used here increased the time to freeze a 5 μL surface droplet from 76 to 640 s at − 20 °C, and reduced ice adhesion strength from roughly 74 kPa to 50 kPa. The number of scrap wind turbines is expanding globally as the wind power industry develops rapidly. Zero–waste recycling of scrap wind turbine blades (WTB) is the key for wind power firms to achieve green and sustainable development on the premise of satisfying environmental protection criteria. In this work, the pyrolysis of fiber/epoxy composites obtained from scrap WTB in oxidizing inert atmospheres was investigated. Various characterization methods were employed to characterize the microstructure and chemical characteristics of the heat–treated fiber/epoxy and to reveal the pyrolysis mechanism. In addition, the heat–treated fibers/epoxy were used as reinforcing agents to investigate their impact on the elastic deformation of butadiene styrene rubber–based flexible composites, and the reinforcing mechanism was revealed. The results revealed that the constituents of fiber/epoxy composites were mostly fiberglass (SiO2, CaCO3) and cured epoxy resin, with covalent bonding being the interaction between the fiberglass and epoxy resin. The total weight of the epoxy resin in the fiber/epoxy composites was 22%, and the 11% weight loss was achieved at around 350 °C, regardless of the presence of oxygen; however, the features of heat–treated fibers/epoxy were associated with the pyrolysis atmosphere at a higher temperature. The pyrolysis products in inert atmospheres, with water contact angles of 58.8°, can considerably improve the tensile properties of flexible composites at the elastic stage. Furthermore, the flexible composite granules were prepared to plug large channels in sand–filled pipes, and the plugging rate had the potential to reach 81.1% with an injection volume of 5.0 PV. The plugging performance was essentially unaffected by water salinity, owing to the high stability of flexible composite granules in mineralized water. The findings of this study present a realistic route to the industrial application of fiber/epoxy, as well as a novel approach for encouraging the efficient use of scrap wind turbines on a large scale.

Nanofibrous veils with nanometer-scale diameters and continuous lengths are considered promising interlayers for enhancing the interlaminar toughness of continuous fiber-reinforced polymer matrix laminates (CFRPs). The molecular structure of nanofibers is a crucial factor influencing their toughening performance, but the underlying trans -dimension structure-activity relationship remain unclear. Here, two types of polyamide-based nanofibrous veils (NF1 and NF2), characterized by distinct molecular structures, were integrated into carbon fiber/epoxy laminates to assess differences in interlaminar fracture toughness. Mode I and Mode II loading tests demonstrated significant yet distinct improvements in interlaminar fracture toughness for the two nanomodified CFRPs, attributed to intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms. NF1-modified composites exhibited superior toughening properties than NF2-modified composites, with a 186 % enhancement in G IC and a 134 % enhancement in G IIC . This superiority can be attributed to NF1's higher crystallinity, smaller diameter, stronger tensile strength, and greater interaction energy with epoxy resin, all of which are closely related to the molecular structure of the nanofibers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provided theoretical insights into how the molecular structure of nanofibers influences interlaminar toughness. Furthermore, the original laminate static flexural properties, dynamic stiffness, and glass-transition temperature ( T g ) are all maintained for NF1-modified composites, suggesting that enhancing interlaminar toughness can compensate for potential declines in mechanical and thermomechanical properties. Consequently, the multi-level structure-activity relationship between polymer molecular structure, nanofiber morphology, interlaminar topology, and composite macroscopic properties was established to pave the way for precise atomic-level construction of interlaminar structures in laminates.

Interleaf is often used to increase the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites, but it remains a challenge to develop high-performance interleaves that can greatly improve the toughness while simultaneously maintaining the in-plane properties. In this study, the carboxylated carbon nanotubes were uniformly decorated onto the surface of electrospun PA66 nanofibers by combination of ultrasonication and interfacial hydrogen bonding, and the obtained flexible nanofiber composite was served as interleaves in the CF/EP laminate. It is found that the modes I and II interlaminar fracture toughness of CNT-COOH/PA66 nanofiber interleaved laminate increases by 122 and 81% compared to the pristine CF/EP. Also, the flexural strength and flexural modulus was enhanced due to the reinforcing effect of the CNT-COOHs. The toughening mechanisms for both modes I and II fracture are investigated in detail based on the morphology of the delamination surface of the laminates.

The improvement of the impact resistance of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CF/EP) composite is of great significance for its application in safety protection. Herein, an approach to improve the compressive mechanical properties of CF/EP composites by self-interlocking Ti 3 C 2 T x /polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aerogel (TPA) has been developed. Mechanical responses and strain rate effects of CF/EP and TPA/CF/EP composites in longitudinal, transverse and through-thickness directions under quasi-static/dynamic loading have been studied. The results show that the stitching effect of TPA leads to the fact that the fracture has been dominated by cohesive failure and fiber breakage. Compared with CF/EP composites, TPA/CF/EP composites exhibit higher compressive strength and Young's modulus in the strain rate range from 0.003 s −1 to 2369 s −1 . TPA/CF/EP composites have different damage evolution under quasi-static and dynamic loading and exhibits obvious strain rate sensitivity. Moreover, high-speed camera photographs and micro-morphological characteristics show that TPA/CF/EP laminates have different failure modes and fracture mechanisms for different loading directions. The well understanding of fracture mechanism can strengthen people's capability of and offer insights into designing advanced energy-absorbing materials and structures.

Chronic low back pain mainly attributed to intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Endogenous damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in the injured IVD, particularly mitochondria-derived nucleic acid molecules (CpG DNA), play a primary role in the inflammatory responses in macrophages. M1-type macrophages form a chronic inflammatory microenvironment by releasing pro-inflammatory factors and nerve growth factor (NGF) that induce nerve growth into the inner annulus fibrosus, resulting in persistent hyperalgesia. We fabricated an amphiphilic polycarbonate that naturally forms cationic nanoparticles (cNP) in aqueous solutions, with the hydrophobic core loaded with TrkA-IN-1, an antagonist against the NGF receptor (TrkA). The drug delivery nanoparticles were denoted as TI-cNP. TrkA-IN-1 and TI-cNP were added to the decellularized annulus fibrosus matrix (DAF) hydrogel to form hybrid hydrogels, denoted as TI-DAF and TI-cNP-DAF, respectively. As a result, TrkA-IN-1 showed a delayed release profile both in TI-DAF and TI-cNP-DAF. Each mole of cNP could bind approximately 3 mol of CpG DNA to inhibit inflammation. cNP-DAF and TI-cNP-DAF significantly inhibited the M1 phenotype induced by CpG DNA. TI-DAF and TI-cNP-DAF reduced neurite branching and axon length, and inhibited the expression of neurogenic mediators (CGRP and substance P) in the presence of NGF. Besides, TI-cNP-DAF relieved mechanical hyperalgesia, reduced CGRP and substance P expression in the dorsal root ganglion, and downregulated GFAP and c-FOS signaling in the spinal cord in the rat disc herniation model. Summarily, TI-cNP-DAF, a novel composite IVD hydrogel, efficiently mediated the inflammatory environment, inhibited nerve ingrowth and sensitization, and could be clinically applied for treating discogenic pain. Statement of Significance : Discogenic lower back pain, related to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), imposes a tremendous health and economic burden globally. M1-type macrophages release pro-inflammatory factors and nerve growth factor (NGF) that induce nerve growth into the inner annulus fibrosus, resulting in persistent hyperalgesia and discogenic pain. Reconstructing matrix integrity and modulating the inflammatory microenvironment are promising strategies for preventing the ingrowth and activation of neurites. The TI-cNP-DAF hydrogel recovers tissue integrity, alleviates inflammation, and delivers the TrkA antagonist to inhibit the activity of NGF, thus restraining hyperinnervation and nociceptive input. Due to its simple production process, injectability, and acellular strategy, the hydrogel is operable and holds great potential for treating discogenic lower back pain.

This study focused on bonding strength improvement between aluminum alloy and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. Laser engraving method was used to create grooves on surface of aluminum substrate, and resin pre-coating (RPC) was used to disperse high-viscosity resin into resin pre-coating solution to be introduced into pre-fabricated structure, which contributed to reducing bonding defects and constructing short aramid fiber/epoxy (SAFE) bonding layer after full evaporation of acetone to improve mechanical interlocking. The results showed bonding strength of composite with engraving space of 0.2 mm and RPC with short aramid fibers was 20.32 MPa, 220.4 % higher than the base. The failure mode was changed from debonding failure on aluminum surface to delamination failure of CFRP. The research confirmed laser engraving and RPC as simple and effective combined methods on improving bonding strength of aluminum-CFRP composites, which could provide a reference for other metal to manufacture high-performance hybrid composites.
