Dual-responsive cellulose fabric based on reversible acidichromic and photoisomeric polymeric dye containing pendant azobenzene

Haiyan Mao,Ling Lin,Zhipeng Ma,Chaoxia Wang

An acid and UV dual-responsive cellulose fabric was developed via coating with a polymeric dye based on waterborne polyurethane and azobenzene chromophore to provide additional smart characteristics for textiles. The incorporation of azobenzene chromophore into polyurethane chain through chemical bonding enhanced the thermal stability. The maximum absorption peak of the polymeric dye and its coated fabric shifted from 410 nm to 520 nm upon pH decreasing from 6 to 1, accompanying with pronounced color change from yellow to amaranth due to structural transition from diazo to hydrazone form. The acidichromic property of the polymeric dye also presents an outstanding repetition stability. The trans -isomers in the polymeric dye transformed into cis -isomers rapidly (1 s) in response to UV irradiation, while its recovery was much slower (6 h) in dark due to the large molecular and volume of polyurethane chains. Upon trans-cis isomerism, the coated fabric presented slight color change between yellow and orange after alternative UV irradiation and dark. The stimuli-responsive cellulose fabric with reversible acidichromic and photoisomeric properties can be a promising candidate for developing a wearable and flexible sensor to monitor environmental changes.

0D bio-based carbon dots and 2D MXene hybridization toward fabricating flame-retardant, conductive and sensing cellulose fabrics

Lan Ding,Ling Sun,Jinke Yu,Yufei Cao,Xiaohui Liu,Yuanlin Ren,Yuesheng Li

With the rapid development of the smart era, there is an urgent need to replace traditional cellulosic textiles with flame retardant multifunctional cellulosic textiles. Herein, two novel multifunctional textiles (MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L) were obtained by constructing coatings consisting of MXene and bio-based carbon dot mixtures (CDG and CDM) on cellulose fabrics using a one-pot impregnation method. MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L exhibited desirable flame retardancy, electrical conductivity and sensing properties due to the synergistic effect of MXene and carbon dot mixtures. In the vertical burning test, MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L showed self-extinguishing when the external ignition source was removed, with limiting oxygen index values increasing from 18.1 % of untreated fabric to 34.4 % and 36.0 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the conductivities of MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L were as high as 31.8 S m −1 and 21.4 S m −1 , respectively. Notably, benefiting from the inherent flexibility of cellulose fabrics, MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L were able to monitor human movement in a stable and continuous manner. In addition, MXene@CDG-C/L and MXene@CDM-C/L retained good integration properties including flame retardancy, electrical conductivity and sensing property after 20 washing cycles. In conclusion, the strategy reported in this work provided a new idea for the development of environment-friendly and economical multifunctional smart textiles.

Structure and properties of oxycellulose fabric crosslinked with soy protein

Yong Wang,Qing Wang,Ying Zhu,Yan Shen,Shirun Cheng,Hongfei Zheng,Yunhui Xu

Cotton is an important renewable biopolymer with extensive applications in various fields including textiles. In the current study a soy protein (SP) crosslinked cotton fabric (SPCCF) was prepared through the reaction of carboxyl cotton fabric with soy protein without using crosslinking agents. FTIR analysis of SPCCF samples indicated that carboxyl groups in oxycellulose fabric have reacted with amino groups of SP to give the corresponding C–N bond, that was also reconfirmed by XPS spectra and TGA/DTG analyses of the grafted fabrics. The resulting SPCCF fabrics acquired under the optimized conditions exhibited the improved tensile strength and capillary effect as compared to the oxidized cotton fabric. The ungrafted and grafted fabrics were further evaluated for dyeing property, as a result, the SPCCF fabrics showed markedly improved colour strength when dyed with acid dyes. The fastness properties of dyeability for the dyed SPCCF fabrics were also good compared with that of ungrafted fabrics by dyeing. Shikonin as a kind of Chinese medicine was found to immobilize on the SPCCF fabric through treatment with shikonin aqueous solution, such fabric displayed effective antibacterial activities against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with durability of 30 washes. These results suggest that the SPCCF can be suitable for medical protective textiles by immobilizing drugs.

Periodate and TEMPO sequential oxidations of cellulose fabrics: Exploration of a multiple and synergistic adsorption mechanism

Zhaoju Zhang,Lu Liu,Hongyang Ma,Shyam Venkateswaran,Benjamin S. Hsiao

Oxidized cellulose fabrics were fabricated by means of periodate and TEMPO sequential two-step oxidations and were employed as a highly efficient filter for dye adsorption with a multiple and synergistic adsorption mechanism. The mechanical properties, yields, and molecular weights of the oxidized cellulose fabrics depend on the content balance between carboxylate and aldehyde groups distributed either in or on the fiber surface where the oxidized cellulose fabrics with high adsorption sites (e.g., carboxylate and aldehyde groups) and high tensile strength were optimized through TEMPO oxidation that was first enhanced by periodate oxidation. The oxidized cellulose fabrics with both carboxylate and aldehyde groups exhibited remarkable adsorption capability, specifically in the adsorption of amino-containing molecules such as chrysoidine dye and hydrazine. A multiple and synergistic adsorption mechanism based on chemical reaction (e.g., Schiff base reaction between the aldehyde and amino groups) and electrostatic interaction (e.g., carboxyl and amino) was proposed and verified by adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics as well as dynamic adsorption, while the maximum adsorption capacities of the oxidized cellulose fabrics against chrysoidine and hydrazine were as high as 118.34 mg/g and 92.76 mg/g, respectively, due to the synergistic adsorption of both carboxylate and aldehyde groups. A spiral wound filtration cartridge (made by 3.6 g of oxidized cellulose fabrics) was fabricated and the removal capability against hydrazine and chrysoidine was investigated. It was impressive that when 18.3 L of hydrazine and 28.8 L of chrysoidine solutions with 3.0 mg/L of concentration were purified separately, the rejection ratios remained as high as 98% and 94%, respectively, with a pressure drop as low as 0.3 kPa. This indicated that the oxidized cellulose fabrics could be employed as highly efficient filters for industrial wastewater treatment through a multiple and synergistic adsorption mechanism.

Engineering Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water transport capability toward perspiration-induced cooling human body

Fengjie Tang,Yinghao Bi,Pengyu Pan,Haodong Sun,Renzhong Wei,Kai Liu,Liulian Huang,Jianguo Li,Lihui Chen

Traditional cellulose fabric with high hydrophilic distinction realizes personal thermal management via perspiration-induced cooling for the human body. However, such behavior is restricted in high-humidity environments, where sweat/water transports from a high-humidity environment to the human body by hydrophilic cellulose fabric. Herein, we developed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, large-scale Janus cellulose fabric via one-side hydrophobic modification of hydrophilic cellulose. Our Janus cellulose fabric comprises hydrophobic cellulose side (water contact angle of 151°) and hydrophilic cellulose side (water contact angle of 19°). Such distinction endows Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water-transport capability, where water molecules are inclined to transport, diffuse and evaporate on the hydrophilic cellulose (diffusion area of 50 μl water is around 0.8 cm 2 ) rather than the hydrophobic cellulose (less and even negligible diffusion area), correspondingly spontaneously leading to a 3–4 ℃ temperature drop of the human body when covering Janus cellulose fabric than pristine cellulose fabric. Janus cellulose fabric paves the way toward green, cost-effective, and cooling fabric in our sustainable society.

Non-destructive modification of cellulose-based fabrics in aqueous phase for flame-retardant epoxy composite

Liyue Zhang,Jingkai Liu,Xiaoling Liu,Jinyue Dai,Xiaoqing Liu,Xiaosu Yi

The flame-retardant modification of plant fiber-reinforced composites (PFRCs) is a fundamental requirement for achieving broader industrial applications. However, commonly used modification methods often compromise the fiber mechanical properties or surface reactivity due to structural damage. In this paper, a water-soluble system consisting of phytic acid imidazole salt and biobased benzoxazine was devised to modify a regenerated cellulose fabric through water-phase immersion. Benefiting from the neutral solution and self-assembly coating, the modified fabric (F-RCF) exhibited a typical self-extinguishing behavior while maintaining good structural integrity and mechanical properties. By further combining F-RCF with a DOPO-containing epoxy resin blend (FEB) to prepare a fiber-reinforced green composite (F-RCF/FEB), the results indicated that the co-curing reaction between the modifier and resin matrix contributed to improved interfacial adhesion. This enabled the simultaneous enhancement of tensile modulus (from 9.82 to 11.29 MPa), impact strength (from 6.58 to 7.26 kJ m −2 ) and interlaminar shear strength (from 11.41 to 13.89 MPa). More importantly, F-RCF/FEB exhibited excellent anti-flammability in terms of a high limiting oxygen index value of 34.3% and a UL-94 V-0 rating, and the peak heat release and total heat release were also markedly reduced by 44.9% and 36.9%, respectively. Mechanism analysis revealed that the modified system effectively prevented the wick effect and provided an inhibitory effect in the gaseous phase, as well as a barrier effect in the condensed phase. This study presents a non-destructive modification strategy for plant fibers, which may also inspire the synchronous enhancement of interfacial compatibility and fire-proof performance of PFRCs. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Water-Soluble Biobased Modifier Toward Epoxy/Cellulose Fabric Composite with Simultaneous Enhancement of Flame Retardancy and Interface Adhesion

Liyue Zhang,Jingkai Liu,Xiaoling Liu,Jinyue Dai,Xiaoqing Liu,Xiaosu Yi

Natural plant fibers, as green and lightweight alternatives to traditional fibers in fabricating green composites, have attracted much interest in recent years. However, their hydrophilic and flammable natures severely limit the interfacial adhesion and flame resistance of the composite, and the synchronous improvement of both remains a considerable challenge. Herein, a combined modifier consisting of a water-soluble benzoxazine (HGB) with high carbonization and phytic acid (PA) containing phosphorus elements and acid groups was devised to treat regenerated cellulose fabric (SF). The treated fabric (F-SF) not only could realize self-extinguishing from the fire, which helps to avoid the wick effects, but also exhibited an optimized interfacial property of the composites. After being combined with an intrinsic flame-retardant epoxy resin (F-EP), the composite material (F-SF/F-EP) achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test and an excellent limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 33.8% due to the flame-retardant effect in both the gaseous and condensed phases. Simultaneously, benefiting from the improved interfacial compatibility, both the tensile modulus and impact strength were enhanced from 9.82 GPa and 6.58 MPa to 11.29 GPa and 7.21 MPa, respectively, compared with untreated SF/EP composite, especially the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) dramatically increased by 21.7%. This work provided an integrated strategy for synchronously enhancing interfacial compatibility and the fire-proof performance of plant fiber-reinforced composites.

Engineering biomimetic cellulose fabric for sustainably and durably cooling human body

Jianguo Li,Fengjie Tang,Yinghao Bi,Haodong Sun,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen

It is essential and challenging to develop sustainable and durable passive radiative cooling materials for long-term effectively maintaining human thermal comfort when undergoing intensified global warming in our low-carbon society. Herein, inspired by the distinct structure-property relationship of fruits-branches in fruiter, this work designs an approach of fibrillation of cellulosic fibers (branches of fruiter) followed by in-situ synthesis of SiO 2 nanoparticles (fruits of fruiter) easily to prepare sustainable, robust, customizable, and scalable cooling cellulose fabric. Such coupling strategy of cellulosic-fiber fibrillation and SiO 2 in-situ growth strongly roughens cellulose fabric, more specifically, sufficient micro- and nano-sized cellulose fibrils and SiO 2 particles, which enables our cooling cellulose fabric to effectively reflect solar light with 97% reflectance (0.4–1.0 µm) and emit mid-infrared light with 0.97 emissivity (8–13 µm). As a result, the developed cooing cellulose fabric spontaneously cools the human body with a temperature drop of 7.4 °C in high-temperature summer. It should be noted that the developed strategy realizes extraordinary adhesion performance between nanosized SiO 2 and fibrillated cellulosic fibers , endowing cooling cellulose fabric with durable yet effective cooling distinction despite enduring 100-time mechanical washing and 100-day exposure to air, as well as high strength (∼48 MPa), desirable moisture evaporation rate and breathability . The present work demonstrates a promising strategy how durability, functionality, and customizability can be integrated in future material design.

Dual mode switchable Janus Nano-ZnO/rGO cellulose fabric with radiative regulation and sweat transport for personal thermal management

Ruijie Ma,Tong Xue,Tianci Han,Chaoxia Wang,Yunjie Yin

Global energy demands and climate change challenges have highlighted the need for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, driving interest in personal thermal management (PTM) technologies. Traditional PTM systems, however, rely on unidirectional thermal regulation, limiting their adaptability to fluctuating ambient conditions and humidity gradients. To overcome these limitations, we engineered a Janus Nano-ZnO/rGO nonwoven fabric (NZr@NF) that combines dynamic bidirectional thermal regulation with unidirectional sweat transport. The cooling side, featuring in situ grown Nano-ZnO layers, achieved high solar reflectance (88.49 %) and infrared emittance (94.20 %), allowing for net radiative cooling power of up to 100.38 W·m −2 . The heating side, functionalized with PDMS@rGO composites, demonstrated remarkable solar absorptance (94.86 %). Compared with the raw fabric, outdoor measurements demonstrated that it achieved an additional cooling effect of 6.27 °C and an additional heating effect of 17.1 °C. This Janus NZr@NF also excelled in moisture-wicking, achieving a cumulative one-way moisture transport index of 442.1 %, effectively mitigating post-sweat discomfort by facilitating evaporation and heat dissipation. With its ultraviolet (UV) resistance, breathability, and moisture permeability, this multifunctional metamaterial provides an innovative direction for wearable energy-saving PTM fabrics.

Junwen Xie,Yinhang Zhang,Jinming Dai,Zuoxiang Xie,Jie Xue,Kun Dai,Fei Zhang,Dan Liu,Junye Cheng,Feiyu Kang,Baohua Li,Yun Zhao,Lin Lin,Qingbin Zheng

A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe 2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe 2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm −2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli , Bacillus subtilis , and Staphylococcus aureus ). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

Facile fabrication of robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic cellulosic fabric for self-cleaning, photocatalysis and UV shielding

Yang Maiping,Liu Weiqu,Jiang Chi,Xie Yankun,Shi Hongyi,Zhang Fengyuan

Abstract Self-cleaning, photocatalysis and UV shielding cotton fabric was fabricated through a mild, facile and efficient method via ZnO/polydimethylsiloxane coatings. No fluorinated materials were employed during the preparation process. The modified cotton presented a high superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 160.4° and water shedding angle of 6.0°. The SEM, EDS and XPS tests were used to investigate the differences of microstructures and chemical compositions of fabrics before and after coating. The robustness of the coated fabric was demonstrated in many aspects, such as immersing in acid and basic solutions, different organic solvents and abrasion test. In addition, the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface displayed excellent self-cleaning due to the synthesis function of superhydrophobicity and photocatalysis. The UV durability and UV shielding characteristics were also investigated. These properties promote the multifunctional cotton fabric as a satisfied candidate in various promising fields. Artificial light-harvesting cellulosic fabrics: Programmable dye assemblies for on-demand heating, antibacterial, and luminescent applications

Fu Wang,Jiahui Wu,Qinuo Han,Liu Hu,Wo Nie

Light-harvesting systems play a pivotal role in the development of sustainable antimicrobial and self-heating artificial materials. Fabric-based artificial solar light-harvesting systems were constructed by designing the assemblies of a zinc(II) phthalocyanine photosensitizer (CAZnPc) and three different fluorescent dyes on the cotton fabric. The dye-mediated Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process and π–π stacking endow the modified fabric with exceptional antibacterial, photothermal, and luminescent performances. Under visible light irradiation (100 mW/cm 2 ), CF-ZP/Rh6G (the optimal heating performer) achieves a temperature of 64.5 °C (ΔT = 43.7 °C) within 100 s with an outstanding photothermal stability (<10 % efficiency decay after 5 cycles). CF-ZP/RhB exhibits a superior 1 O 2 generation capability (7.64-fold higher than that of CF-ZnPc). The synergistic photothermal–photodynamic effect enables CF-ZP/Rh6G to attain a 99.9999 % antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli after 90 min of irradiation (30 mW/cm 2 ). Mechanistic study reveals that the performance variations observed for these fabrics arise from the different fluorescent dye molecular structures, causing different intermolecular forces, which modulate energy allocation pathways of photosensitizer to govern functionality. The assembly construction strategy offers a material platform for sunlight-powered wearable thermal management and medical protective applications.
