Double etherification of corn starch to improve its adhesion to cotton and polyester fibers

Wei Li,Zhenzhen Xu,Zongqian Wang,Xinhua Liu,Changlong Li,Fangtao Ruan

In order to investigate the impact of double etherification on the adhesion to fibers and desizability of corn starch , a series of doubly etherified corn starch (DES) with the total degree of substitution (DS) values of 0.014–0.034 were prepared by simultaneous quaternization and sulfonation of acid-converted corn starch (ACS) with N -(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTMA) and 3-chloro-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (CHPS-Na). The influence of double etherification on the adhesion of starch to cotton and polyester fibers was evaluated. It was found that etherification was able to increase the tensile strengths of starch to the fibers, and the strengths gradually increased as the etherification levels rose. Moreover, etherification was capable of displaying a positive effect on the desizability of starch as determined by measurements of swelling capacity of DES films and the time required to break the films. Etherification also enhanced the paste stability and moisture regain of the films. The DES with a total DS value of 0.034 showed potential for ameliorating the adhesion of starch to cotton and polyester fibers for warp sizing.

Efficient Swelling and Mercerization of Bagasse Fiber by Freeze-Thaw-Assisted Alkali Treatment

Cao Liming,Zhu Jiatian,Deng Baojuan,Zeng Fanyan,Wang Shanshan,Ma Yun,Qin Chengrong,Yao Shuangquan

The mercerization of fiber is an important method for the high-value utilization of cellulose. In this study, the bagasse fiber was mercerized by freeze–thaw-assisted alkali treatment (FT/AT). The effects of freezing temperature, freezing time, alkali concentration, and thawing temperature on cellulose and hemicellulose removal were studied. The optimal freezing temperature was −40°C, freezing time was 8.0 h, alkali concentration was 5.0%, and thawing temperature was 30°C. The highest removal rate of hemicellulose was 75.64%. It was 5.80% higher than that of alkali treatment (AT). The alkaline degradation of cellulose was inhibited. The penetration of alkaline solution to fiber was promoted by the assistance of freeze-thaw pretreatment. The effective alkali concentration (5.0%) of cellulose I completely transformed into cellulose II decreased by 66.67% compared with traditional alkaline mercerization (15.0%). The high-efficiency mercerization of fiber was achieved by FT/AT. It provides theoretical support for promoting the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Valuable aramid/cellulose nanofibers derived from recycled resources for reinforcing carbon fiber/phenolic composites

Shanshan Ma,Hejun Li,Chang Li,Bo Li,Jie Fei,Yangbing Wen

The scale-up preparation of aramid nanofiber (ANF) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF), still faces serious challenges such as extreme production cost and lengthy preparation cycle. Herein, a feasible top-down strategy was proposed to achieve the efficient reclamation of waste resources, further realizing the large-scale production of high value-added nanofibers. The ANF/CNF as nanoscale building blocks and their reinforcement effects on the mechanical performances of carbon fiber/phenolic composites were investigated. Related strength and modulus of ANF/CNF-enhanced composites in the tensile, bending, shear and nano indentation tests, increased by 118.1% (tensile strength), 141.2% (tensile modulus), 142.2% (flexural strength), 354.4% (flexural modulus), 38.8% (shear strength) and 94.4% (elastic modulus), respectively. Our work offers a valuable reference in the fabrication of low-cost ANF/CNF derived from waste resources, which would facilitate the wide application of nanofibers in fabricating high-performance advanced functional materials.

Effects of residual lignin on mechanical defibrillation process of cellulosic fiber for producing lignocellulose nanofibrils

Jiang Yan,Liu Xiuyu,Yang Qiang,Song Xueping,Qin Chengrong,Wang Shuangfei,Li Kecheng

Abstract High (14.9%), medium (2.4%) and low (0.1%) lignin-containing cellulosic fibers were processed through a micro-grinding method to mechanically produce lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs). Effects of residual lignin on the mechanical defibrillation process were investigated in terms of the nanofibrils yields, the diameters of resultant LCNFs and the micro-grinding energy consumption. The results showed that the residual lignin delayed the initial defibrillation of cellulosic fibers due to its physical barrier. However, the residual lignin eventually facilitated the defibrillation and improved the maximum nanofibrils yields by 17.9–30.8%, and greatly reduced the diameters of the resultant LCNFs from 32.9 ± 7.7 to 9.2 ± 3.3 nm. The effects of lignin on counteracting the recombination reactions between the highly reactive cellulose radicals and hindering the aggregation of defibrillated fibrils through reducing the inter-fibrillar hydrogen bonding presumably resulted in the better eventual defibrillation of cellulosic fibrils. Preparation of All-Cellulose Composite Fiber Reinforced by Cellulose Nanofibrils Based on CO2 Switchable Solvent

Jin Yang Zhang,Jin Ling Li,Qian Qiao,Rui Wang,Fei Liu,Hai Ning Na,Jin Zhu

In this paper, cellulose solution was obtained by dissolving cellulose in CO2 switchable solvent, and the CNF spinning solution was prepared by mixing cellulose solution with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) by physical blending. CNF reinforced all-cellulose composite fibers were prepared by wet-spinning. The spinning solution with good dispersion of CNF can be obtained. The rheological property test showed that the solution has spinnability. The composite fibers were subsequently prepared by wet-spinning. The structure and properties of the composite fibers were analyzed by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and mechanical properties testing. The results showed that the chemical structure of the composite fiber was the same as that of cellulose, but the aggregate structure became amorphous, which resulted in deceased thermal stability. The composite fibers had dense and solid structure without any cavity. The mechanical strength of the composite fiber was upto 1.12cN/dtex.

The cellulose binding region in Trichoderma reesei cellobiohydrolase I has a higher capacity in improving crystalline cellulose degradation than that of Penicillium oxalicum

Jian Du,Xiu Zhang,Xuezhi Li,Jian Zhao,Guodong Liu,Baoyu Gao,Yinbo Qu

Commercial cellulase preparations for lignocellulose bioconversion are mainly produced by the fungus Trichoderma reesei . The maximum cellulose conversion of T. reesei cellulase mixture was 15%–20% higher than that of Penicillium oxalicum in the hydrolysis of corncob residue and Avicel. Nevertheless, both preparations hydrolyzed more than 92% of cellulose in NaOH-mercerized Avicel. When added to Avicel hydrolysis residue that was less reactive to P. oxalicum cellulases, cellobiohydrolase I (CBH I) from T. reesei resulted in a higher cellulose conversion than its homologous proteins from P. oxalicum and Aspergillus niger at the same protein loadings. Further domain exchange experiment attributed the high hydrolytic efficiency of T. reesei CBH I to its inter-domain linker and cellulose-binding domain. The results in part explained the superior performance of T. reesei cellulases on the degradation of native crystalline cellulose, and highlighted the important role of cellulose-binding region in determining the degree of hydrolysis by cellulases.

Improving the degree of polymerization of cellulose nanofibers by largely preserving native structure of wood fibers

Jie Zhou,Zhiqiang Fang,Kaihuang Chen,Jinyi Cui,Dongjie Yang,Xueqing Qiu

The degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose plays an essential role in unlocking the superior mechanical potential of wood cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). However, severe degradation of cellulose chains during the chemical pulping is a big challenge to obtain CNFs with high DP. In this work, we tend to improve the DP of wood CNFs by significantly preserving the native structure of wood fibers in an industrial method. Wood sticks are first pretreated with hydrothermal treatment to partially remove hemicellulose , thus leading to an increased porous structure that facilitates the penetration of cooking liquid and lignin removal during delignification , and dilute-alkali-sulfate pulping is then employed to obtain wood fibers with highest viscosity average DP (DP V ) of nearly 2400. After that, the as-prepared wood fibers with high DP are separated into CNFs with highest average DP V of 1333. Finally, we demonstrate the potential application of wood CNFs with improved DP V in the fabrication of strong and tough isotropic films and macrofibers.

Simultaneous enhancement of mechanical strength and flame retardancy of lyocell fiber via filling fire-resistant cellulose-based derivative

Qiuyan Zhang,Jie Chen,Di Li,Ling Sun,Yuanlin Ren,Chunzu Cheng,Xiaohui Liu

Functional materials such as fireproof fabrics or fibers usually destroy mechanical strength due to the introduction of flame retardant. In this work, ionic liquid 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium methyl phosphite, one solvent and modifier, was employed to fabricate phosphorylated cellulose . As a cellulose-based derivative, phosphorylated cellulose displayed good compatibility and dispersity in cellulose spinning which was proved by the uniform cellulose spinning dope and compact fiber structure. Owing to the special and similar structure, phosphorylated cellulose interaction with cellulose unit was conducive to enhancing mechanical strength of lyocell fiber. The flame retardant lyocell fibers (FRLF) with phosphorus content (<1 at %) exhibited excellent flame retardancy. The value of peak of heat release rate (PHRR) declined by 50.9 % compared with pure lyocell fibers (LF), as micro-combustion calorimetry measurement estimated. Meanwhile, the breaking strength of FRLF increased by 6.44 % compared with that of LF. In brief, this work balanced the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of lyocell fibers via one-step synthesizing fire retardant cellulose-based filler based on the structural similarity between matrix and flame retardant.

Weakening fibril–fibril interactions via an on-demand regulation of hemicellulose phase towards the facile disassembly of lignocellulose heterostructure into approaching native-state elementary fibrils

Yan Jiang,Xinyi Wang,Zhiqian Meng,Mengyang Zhang,Shuangfei Wang,Xiuyu Liu

It is of great technical interest but still challenging to develop a cost-effective and eco-friendly method to extract high-aspect-ratio elementary nanofibrils with native-state microstructure from recalcitrant lignocellulosic biomass because established chemical/biological/mechanical approaches inevitably give rise to the breakage of cellulose chains during the nanofibrillation of lignocellulose. Nature has designed hierarchical and heterogeneous lignocellulose structures, among which hemicellulose significantly affects interfibrillar interactions due to its unique molecular structure and micro-distribution pattern. Inspired by this fact, we amplify the hemicellulose stimulation effect on nanofibrillation using an on-demand regulated ionic liquid/water cosolvent and dissociate ultrahigh aspect ratio (2213) elementary fibrils (diameter = 4.7 nm) comprising approaching native-state structural carbohydrates from mildly delignified lignocellulose fibers (i.e. holocellulose) by a low-energy blender. We elucidated the mechanism for the exceptional disassembly behavior of holocellulose fibers: the high-level swelling of the amorphous and negatively charged hemicellulose phase weakens fibril–fibril interactions. The high-aspect-ratio morphology, well-preserved cellulose molecular structure, and hemicellulose-rich surface chemistry of the as-prepared nanofibrils significantly affect their self-assembly behavior and contribute to the extraordinary mechanical and optical performances of the corresponding nanopaper that conventional cellulose nano-papers/composites retain unsurpassed, e.g., overcome general conflicts between strength (310 MPa) and toughness (53 MJ m−3) and between transparency (86%) and haze (77%). This work provides a scale-up, ecologically and economically efficient lignocellulose nanostructure-engineered strategy for manufacturing high-performance structural nanomaterials towards a high-tech and carbon-neutral future.

Mechanically robust ultrathin nanofibrous films by using microfluidic-based continuous printing

Xiao Chen,Jiaqing Su,Sha Cheng,Cheng Huang,Chunxia Zhao,Chao Teng,Pengchao Zhang

Ultrathin nanofibrous films with unique properties, such as controlled thickness, structures, and excellent mechanical robustness, play a vital role in flexible wearable devices, electronic skin, and rechargeable batteries. However, nanofibrous films are always facing limitations in their mechanical properties, even though they are strong when used as textiles, mainly owing to their structural shortcomings by using conventional fabrication methods. Herein, we present the fabrication of free-standing ultrathin nanofibrous films with good mechanical properties by using a microfluidic-based continuous printing strategy. Owing to the precisely controllable microfluidic flow in the micrometre-scale, the resulting aramid nanofibre (ANF) films can reach thicknesses as low as 140 ± 25 nm. Specifically, the tensile strength of such ultrathin ANF films is recorded at an impressive value of 667 ± 40 MPa, representing a 120% improvement compared to the films prepared by using casting method. Such excellent mechanical robustness comes from the double-sided protonation, which shows a symmetrically dense structure compared to the asymmetric structure of cast films. Furthermore, we demonstrate the continuous fabrication of thin regenerated cellulose nanofiber (RCNF) and cellulose diacetate (CDA) films using the microfluidic-based printing strategy. Both microfluidic-based films show significant enhancements in strength, with a 42% increase for RCNF and a 94% increase for CDA compared to their cast films. We envision that this microfluidic-based continuous printing strategy provides a promising pathway for the development of advanced ultrathin nanofibrous films towards practical applications.

Green preparation of cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibers by ball milling assisted citric acid hydrolysis

Xingya Kang,Baoying Wang,Yanhong Ding,Li Xu,Yan Zhang

In order to solve the drawbacks of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared by critic acid (CA) hydrolysis method, such as low yield and low esterification degree, herein, ball milling assisted CA hydrolysis method was applied to obtain carboxylated CNCs and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with fine and uniform size, high yield and carboxyl content, good crystallinity, and good thermal stability. It was discovered that the diameter of CNCs and CNFs were decreased and the size uniformity was improved. The yield of CNCs was obviously improved to 39.8 % due to the promoted esterification reaction, which was 3.3 times of that without ball milling. Moreover, the carboxyl group content of CNCs and CNFs were improved to a maximum of 0.52 and 0.48 mmol/g, respectively. As ball milling progressing, more amorphous regions were destroyed and cellulose bundles were dissociated, resulting in CNCs and CNFs with high crystallinity. The thermal decomposition temperature of CNCs and CNFs were ranged from 317 to 331℃, which was higher than that had reported. This work provided an effective route for carboxylated CNCs with good yield, esterification degree and other performance, which was beneficial for the subsequent applications in the field of biomaterials.

Preparation and aggregate structure of polyacrylonitrile and microcrystalline cellulose hygroscopic thermal composite fibers

Qiushan Chen,Meijie Qu,Hai Wang,Ping Tang,Rongkun Liu,Rui Zhang,Yuezhen Bin

Hygroscopic thermal fibers are a kind of functional material that makes use of moisture to generate heat for fabrics. In this work, composite fibers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with various compositions were prepared using a solution spinning method. Besides the promotion of mechanical properties of PAN by addition of cellulose reported in previous research, this study focused on the hygroscopic thermal property of blends and spun fibers of PAN and cellulose. The content of MCC in the composite fibers has a significant effect on the hygroscopic thermal property. At a temperature of 17 °C and humidity of 90%, the maximum temperature increase of composite fibers could reach 4.9 °C. The composite fibers exhibited an obvious temperature response of on–off humidity circulation during testing. The breaking strength of the composite fibers was higher than 100 MPa. The influence of addition of cellulose on morphology, especially on the crystallinity and lateral size of PAN microfibrils, and the relationship between the morphology and hygroscopic thermal property were investigated by means of wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering in terms of experiment and theory. A smaller lateral size of microfibril led to a better hydroscopic thermal property. The composite fibers were expected to be used in temperature regulation clothing. © 2022 Society of Industrial Chemistry.
