Enhancing strength and ductility of pure titanium by interstitial oxygen atoms

Zeyun Cai,Tao Xiang,Weizong Bao,Jiayin Chen,Tian Gao,Guoqiang Xie

Pure titanium is an ideal material for tissue replacements and implant materials for its superior biocompatibility and corrosion resistance , but its limited strength remains a major obstacle to its wide applications. A promising strategy for enhancing the strength is to alloy the pure titanium with oxygen. Herein, we reported an oxygen solid solution strengthening for pure titanium by achieving a titanium-oxygen (Ti–O) alloy using ball milling (BM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of oxygen contents, ranging from 0.33 to 2.08 wt%, on the mechanical properties of pure titanium was systematically investigated. Experimental results indicate that the Ti–O alloy with the oxygen content of 1.95 wt% reached an ultrahigh yield strength of 2026 MPa and showed a large ductility of 11.2% in compression. According to the quantified analysis of strengthening mechanisms, solid solute oxygen atoms are responsible for the balance of superior yield strength and ductility of the Ti–O alloys.

Effect of pretreatments on the hydrogen evolution kinetics of pure titanium using impedance and SECM technologies

Xin-Ran Li,Qin-Hao Zhang,Xian-Ze Meng,Lian-Kui Wu,Fa-He Cao

The behaviors and kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on pure titanium spontaneously passivated in air (P-Ti), activated by electrochemical method (EA-Ti) and fluoride ion (FA-Ti) were investigated by impedance and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). During cathodic polarization, the passive film and proton were simultaneously reduced on P-Ti, only HER current was detected on EA-Ti, while both HER and active/passive transition behavior presented on FA-Ti. Corresponding transfer coefficients and standard rate constants of HER are 0.48/6.00 × 10 −12 cm/s, 0.25/7.60 × 10 −7 cm/s and 0.24/1.14 × 10 −6 cm/s, respectively. These differences originate from the change in electronic structure of passive film by pretreatments.

Biocorrosion of pure and SLA titanium surfaces in the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis and its effects on osteoblast behavior

Li-na Xu,Xiao-yu Yu,Wan-qing Chen,Song-mei Zhang,Jing Qiu

Objective: The study aims to investigate the biocorrosion behavior of Porphyromonas gingivalis on pure and SLA titanium surfaces and its effects on surface characteristics and osteoblast behavior. Methods: Pure and SLA titanium specimens were immersed in culture medium with P. gingivalis and incubated for 7 days. P. gingivalis colonization on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pure and SLA titanium surface characteristics were analyzed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface roughness and surface wettability. The corrosion behaviors of pure and SLA titanium specimens were evaluated by electrochemical corrosion test. The osteoblast behavior of MC3T3-E1 cells on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces after P. gingivalis colonization was investigated by cell adhesion and western blot assays. Results: P. gingivalis colonized on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces was observed by SEM. The XPS analysis demonstrated reductions in the relative levels of titanium and oxygen and obvious reductions of dominant titanium dioxide (TiO2) on both titanium surfaces after immersing the metal in P. gingivalis culture. In addition, their roughness and wettability were changed. Correspondingly, the electrochemical corrosion test results revealed significant decreases in the corrosion resistance and increases in the corrosion rate of the pure and SLA titanium specimens after immersion in P. gingivalis culture. The results of the in vitro study showed that the pre-corroded pure and SLA titanium surfaces by P. gingivalis exhibited lower osteocompatibility and down-regulated the adhesion, spreading and osteogenic differentiation abilities of MC3T3-E1 cells. Conclusions: P. gingivalis was able to colonize on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces and weaken their surface properties, especially a decrease in the protective TiO2 film, which induced the biocorrosion and further negatively affected the osteoblast behavior.

Enhanced Surface Precipitates on Ultrafine-Grained Titanium in Physiological Solution

Qing Zhou,Lei Wang,Cheng-Hong Zou

Enhanced cell adherence to the surface of nanocrystallized commercially pure titanium (CP–Ti) was observed by several authors. However, the understanding of the surface modification of Ti in a physiological solution due to nanocrystallized grain size has not been reached. In this work, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was applied to manufacturing ultrafine grained CP–Ti. Martensite and Widmanstatten microstructures were also obtained for comparison. The CP–Ti pieces with different microstructures were subjected to soaking tests in a simulated body fluid. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to characterize the surfaces. The results show the surface precipitates mainly contain Ti, O, Ca and P. The quantity of precipitates on ECAPed CP–Ti is the largest among different specimens corresponded to the observation of the thickest layer formation on ECAPed CP–Ti found by EIS. EDS results show more CaPO and less Ti are included on ECAPed Ti comparing to the deposits on other two types of specimens. Smaller numbers of precipitates and denser film are produced on the surface of the water-quenched CP–Ti. The regeneration kinetics of the CaP precipitates evaluated by Gibbs free energy is introduced to interpret the precipitating behaviors on different CP–Ti specimens. Keywords:surface performance;CaP precipitates;ultrafine grain size;ECAP;EIS;XPS;CP–Ti

Mechanisms of Hierarchical Topographies Tuning Bacteria and Cell Biological Responses to the Surfaces of Pure Titanium and Cu-Bearing Titanium Alloy

Hui Liu,Daorong Xu,Yuan Ma,Jikun Qian,Yinghui Yang,Bin Yu,Ling Ren,Ke Yang

The competition between cells integration and bacterial colonization determines the fate of implantations. To reveal the effects of clinical implant topographies on osteoblast differentiation and bacterial biofilm formation, a series of micron/submicron/nano-hierarchical structures were created at pure titanium surfaces (Ti-I, Ti-II, Ti-III). It was found that the hierarchical structures promoted MC3T3-E1 cell differentiation through contact guidance and Ti-II processed the best osteogenic ability. Undesirably, hierarchical surfaces further accelerated the biofilm formation due to submicron structures with low interaction. To reduce the risk of bacterial infections, hierarchical structures were prepared on the antibacterial Cu-bearing titanium alloy surfaces (TiCu-I, TiCu-II, TiCu-III). Hierarchical topographies not only endowed TiCu surfaces with antibacterial trapping characteristics due to CuO doped in the outermost oxides layer but also shifted the corrosion behavior of TiCu alloy into activation–passivation, increasing the Cu-ion release rate and further promoting the osteogenic differentiation. TiCu-III possessed excellent antibacterial trapping ability and optimal osteogenic action. Finally, in the osteomyelitis-modeled mice, hierarchical topographies aggravated the bacterial infection around Ti implants, which entirely lost the osseointegration, while all of the TiCu surfaces significantly inhibited the infection and accelerated the formation of new bone tunnels around the implants. In vivo studies successfully confirmed the tuning mechanism of hierarchical topographies on the biological responses of bacteria and cells to the Ti and TiCu alloys, which would pave the way to develop novel biofunctionalized metal implants.

Composition and bioactivity of calcium phosphate coatings on anodic oxide nanotubes formed on pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates

Qianting Yao,Yingying Jiang,Shuo Tan,Xinyi Fu,Bo Li,Lijia Liu

Electronic structure and bioactivity of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings on Ti-based anodic nanotubes are investigated. Nanotubes on pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, respectively, are used as substrates for CaP deposition. The CaP coatings are formed by first growing a seeding CaP layer using alternative immersion (AIM) treatment followed by crystallization in Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline (DPBS). CaP coatings formed on both Ti and Ti-6Al-4V substrates are found containing a variety of bioactive CaP species, such as hydroxyapatite (HA), amorphous CaP (ACP), octacalcium phosphate (OCP), and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD). The compositions of the coatings during the nucleation and crystallization processes are tracked and analyzed using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The variation of CaP species in the resulted coatings are found strongly dependent on the choice of metal substrates, which leads to different bioactivities. By comparing the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1) on the CaP coatings, correlations between CaP species and their bioactivities are established.
