Nanosized materials acting as substitutes of natural enzymes are currently attracting significant research due to their stable enzyme-like characteristics, but some flaws of these nanozymes , including their limited catalytic rate and efficiency, need to be remedied to enable their wider applications. In this work, we verify for the first time the catalytic behavior of uncapped nanobranch-based CuS clews as a peroxidase mimic. XRD , XPS , SEM, and TEM proofs demonstrate that high-purity CuS clews composed of intertwined wires with abundant nanodendrites outside are successfully produced via a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis approach, with thiourea as both the sulfion source and the structure-directing agent. The synthesized CuS can catalytically oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 to trigger a visible color reaction with rapid response (reaching a maximum change within 5 min). The proposed CuS nanozyme exhibits preferable catalytic kinetics over natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This outstanding activity primarily results from the large surface area and rich sites exposed by the uncapped unique structure. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated sensing system provides linear absorbance (652 nm) changes in the H 2 O 2 concentration range of 0.2˜130 μM, with a detection limit of as low as 63 nM. When coupled with glucose oxidase (GOD), the system is demonstrated to be capable of monitoring glucose in blood samples with excellent performance.

Graphical Corrosion control : A PtNi alloy with a composite morphology comprised of nanobranches and nanoparticles is described. The unique morphology of the PtNi alloy facilitates electron accumulation on Pt, which enhances its resistance to chloride corrosion and performance in electrocatalytic hydrogen production in seawater. A solvothermal method to prepare PtNi alloys that have differing morphologies is described. By adjusting the feed ratio of Pt and Ni precursors in this process, PtNi alloys with different compositions (Pt : Ni atomic ratio from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1) and morphologies (evolution from nanobranches to nanoparticles) are generated. The prepared Pt 48 Ni 52 alloy, which has a composite morphology comprised of nanobranches and nanoparticles, exhibits superior activity and durability towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater compared to those of commercial Pt/C catalyst and other PtNi alloys that have different compositions and morphologies. The excellent seawater HER performance of Pt 48 Ni 52 is ascribed to its nanobranch/nanoparticle morphology that optimally facilitates electron accumulation on Pt, which enhances resistance to chloride corrosion in seawater.

Microfluidics is a powerful tool to integrate biological detection/chemical synthesis processes into a centimeter-size chip with microscale channels for fast and sample-saving detections and reactions. While offering advantages, the microscale channels make it difficult to mix high-viscosity liquid samples and reagents, hindering the further improvement of the rapidity, reliability, sensitivity, and accuracy of biological detections based on microfluidics. The nanorotors can be vital for mixing enhancement in microfluidic chips and specific binding as biomacromolecule carriers. However, the development of low-cost, mass-producible, and particular-shaped nanorotor fabrication methods has been desired but difficult. Here, we introduce low-cost multifunctional and structural magnetic nanobranches to improve mixing efficiency inside microfluidic chips and serve as biomolecular carriers. The nanobranches were fabricated by associating magnetic-field-induced Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle alignment with self-polymerized dopamine. The nanobranches combine the functionalities of mixers and antibody carriers, being mass-producible, biocompatible, and recyclable. The required mixing time by nanobranches can be as half as that by nanochains, and the reaction for Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) can be enhanced, promoting sensitivity improvement (∼1.8 times higher than that of nanochains), the limit of detection reduction (6.20, 13.7, 203, and 61.2 pg mL −1 for nanobranches, nanochains, nanospheres, and commercial ELISA kit, respectively), and linear range expansion. It is promising that the fabricated magnetic nanobranches would be a multifunctional tool for high-sensitivity biosensing.

The authors describe the synthesis of fluorescent coral-like carbon nano-branched polymers (PCNBPs) co-doped with nitrogen and phosphorus. Uric acid and phosphoric acid act as nitrogen and phosphorus sources, respectively. The PCNBPs have a coral-like branched structure, are cross-connected, and < 20 nm in skeleton diameter. Their blue fluorescence, best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 330/425 nm, is quenched by mercury (II) ions due to the specifically restricted rigid conformation caused by the interaction of phosphorus, nitrogen, and oxygen groups on the surface of the PCNBPs. Fluorescence is selectivity quenched by Hg(II) but restored in addition of the hypertension drug captopril (CAP) in the range 50 nM to 40 μM concentration range. Fluorescence recovery is attributed to the effectively specific interactions between the thiol group of CAP and Hg(II). The method was applied to the determination of the concentration of Cap in pharmaceutical samples, and recoveries were between 97.6 and 105.1%.

Developing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting over a wide pH range is of great interest for practical applications, but still remains a challenge. Specifically, to the best of our knowledge, a 3-in-1 electrocatalyst that can efficiently catalyze overall water splitting in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes has not been reported so far. Herein, we report the colloidal synthesis of well-dispersed IrW nanobranches with branch architectures and describe how the morphology varies with the amount of W doping. As expected, they exhibit outstanding catalytic performance and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at all pH values, which are much higher than those of Ir nanoparticles (NPs), and most reported state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. More importantly, when further used as both an anode and cathode for overall water splitting in 0.1 M HClO4, 0.1 M KOH, and 1.0 M PBS (phosphate buffer solution), cell voltages of 1.58, 1.60, and 1.73 V, respectively, were achieved at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The present work opens up a new avenue for designing electrocatalysts for pH-universal overall water splitting, especially for application in highly corrosive acidic media and neutral media with limited ionic concentrations.

Based on an entropy-driven strategy, novel multi-component high-entropy alloy nanobranches (HEA NBs) are synthesized to solve the challenges of limited intrinsic activity and poor durability in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). The unique HEA NBs significantly enhance facet density and generate abundant unsaturated active sites through lattice distortion effects, thereby adjusting the d-band center and changing electronic structure, effectively reducing the adsorption energy barrier, optimizing the activation energy for the four-electron pathway. Electrochemical tests reflect that HEA NBs have a half-wave potential of 0.943 V and mass activity of 1.75 (A mg −1 Pt ), which is 11.7 times higher than commercial Pt/C, and decays about 22 % after 30,000 cycles. Notably, in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the peak power density of 1.61 W cm −2 is achieved by HEA NBs at an ultra-low load. Geometric phase analysis reveals a compressive strain effect driven by entropy. This work establishes a composition-structure-performance relationship for high-entropy alloys, providing a new potential for designing electrocatalysts.
