In our previous studies of metal nanoparticle growth, we have come to realize that the dynamic interplay between ligand passivation and metal deposition, as opposed to static facet control, is responsible for focused growth at a few active sites. In this work, we show that the same underlying principle could be applied to a very different system and explain the abnormal growth modes of liquid nanoparticles. In such a liquid active surface growth (LASG), the interplay between droplet expansion and simultaneous silica shell encapsulation gives rise to an active site of growth, which eventually becomes the long necks of nanobottles. For this synthetic control, the imbalance of the said interplay is the critical factor, as demonstrated by carefully designed control experiments. Thus, LASG provides a coherent mechanism that encompasses a wide range of liquid-derived nanostructures, including hollow nanospheres, asymmetric teardrops, and hollow nanobottles with an opening. By adapting nanosynthesis techniques from the solid to liquid realm, we believe that LASG would provide deeper insights and more sophisticated synthetic controls.

In this work, we presented an external stimulating Pickering interfacial biocatalyst (PIB), which is a gelatin and Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) complex containing polydopamine (PDA) nanobottles (PDA@G-CRL). This created PDA nanobottles are employed as emulsifiers and enzyme carriers for the PIB system, showing an excellent energy saving effect during the reaction. They are made utilizing the polystyrene (PS) template technique, and after lipase is entrapped with gelatin gel assistant, by exploiting the photothermal properties of PDA under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, these nanobottles may efficiently stabilize the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion and cause the release of gelatin–lipase complex, producing the PIB effect. The encapsulated lipase rate and minimum loading rate of lipase in PDA nanobottles are 50.76% and 263 mg g–1, respectively, which is 3.59 times higher than that of free lipase. In the biosynthesis phytosterol, the esterification rate of PIB reached 78% after 34 h of reaction, which was 3.4 times higher than that of free lipase in a single-phase system, and after 5 cycles, the relative activity remained at 51.33%. In particular, in terms of energy consumption, our proposed method is 227 times lower than that of traditional heating methods. It is believed that this smart PIB is able to contribute insights into green biocatalysis areas.

Janus-like magnetic molecularly imprinted nanobottles (MMINBs) are designed by the twice modification of the bottle-like particles with 3-chloropropyl groups capped on exterior surface and amino-groups capped on interior surface for specific adsorption and separation of luteolin (LTL) which containing cis -diol groups. Firstly, silica nanobottles (NBs) derived from anisotropic emulsion containing three species of silane coupling agents (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane, and tetraethyl orthosilicate) are prepared to pave for the subsequent modification. Then magnetic nanoparticles by thermal decomposition of ferric triacetylacetonate are attached to carboxylic acid functionalized interior surface of nanobottles. Imprinted polymers using 4-vinylphenylboronic acid as functional monomer are introduced onto exterior surface of magnetic nanobottles (MNBs) by atom-transfer radical polymerization strategy using activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET ATRP) reaction. The capture performances of as-prepared MMINBs are illustrated by rebinding equilibrium, kinetics, selectivity, and regeneration. The maximum adsorption amount of MMINBs is 187. 2 μmol g −1 at 308 K. Moreover, MMINBs shows feasible capture kinetics (120 min), excellent selectivity, and remarkable recyclability after 7 regeneration cycles (only 4.55% loss in adsorption amounts).

Usually the tumor thermal therapy is accompanied with inflammatory reactions, which in turn promote tumor growth and metastasis meanwhile. Herein, we prepared novel trifunctional PEG-IL/ZrO 2 -Ag@SiO 2 nanorattles, which can be used for CT imaging-guided simultaneous tumor microwave thermal therapy and resistance to bacterial infection. Under the microwave irradiation, the nanorattles present excellent microwave thermal properties. Simultaneously, the nanorattles have good antibacterial effect in vitro and in vivo, which can restrain bacterial growth effectively and reduce inflammation response during the microwave thermal therapy. In addition, the nanorattles also have the function of CT imaging, which can monitor the tumor therapy in real time. The strategy of simultaneous microwave thermal therapy and inflammation management effectively inhibits tumor growth in mice with a good anti-tumor effect (96.4%). This proof-of-concept investigation provides a simple and reliable strategy for tumor treatment and inhibiting inflammatory reaction using a multifunctional nanomaterial , indicating the great application prospect in tumor treatment by simultaneous eradicating tumor tissue and managing inflammation.
