Boron nanoparticles , with their remarkably high gravimetric and volumetric calorific values, emerge as the most promising fuel in energetic fields. However, challenges such as susceptibility to oxidation , high ignition temperature , and low combustion efficiency have constrained their further applications. In this study, we fabricated high explosives based nano-boron microspheres with uniform size using the electrostatic spray method, in which the boron nanoparticles and high explosives (CL-20 or PETN) are closely bonded together by fluorinated polymer (F 2602 ) and evenly distributed. The results indicated that the microspheres exhibited high sphericity and showed an enhanced antioxidant capability. The addition of high-energy explosives not only reduced the thermal oxidation temperature of nano-boron powder within the microspheres but also significantly enhanced the pressurization rate. Additionally, the microspheres with added high-energy explosives released more energy during the combustion process. Compared to physically mixed samples, electrostatically sprayed microspheres with a uniform microstructure still exhibited higher reactivity. Therefore, the design and synthesis of microspheres with controllable structures using the electrostatic spray method show promising application prospects.

To overcome the agglomeration and insufficient combustion of nano-boron (n-B) powders, this study successfully prepared two novel types of boron-based nanocomposites using the acoustic resonance technology, namely high-substitute nitrochitosan/nano-boron (NCh-B) with ratios of 1:3, 1:5, 1:7 and 1:9, and nitrochitosan/nano-boron powder/nano-titanium (NCh-B-Ti) with Ti contents of 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt%. The structural morphologies, laser ignition and combustion properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The results suggest that the addition of NCh can significantly improve the dispersion of n-B. NCh-B exhibited a higher combustion performance than n-B, as evidenced by their ignition delay and flame areas. When the laser power density was 81 W, NCh-B 5 -Ti 15% exhibited a combustion time and an ignition delay of 240 ms and 5.5 ms respectively, which were higher and lower than those of NCh-B 5 (199 ms and 17 ms, respectively). Furthermore, NCh-B 5 -Ti 15% displayed a lower ignition delay than both n-B powders (12 ms) and NCh-B (11 ms), as well as brighter flames and a larger combustion area. Therefore, the addition of n-Ti can promote the combustion of n-B powders, with the combustion products of NCh-B-Ti including H 3 BO 3 , B 2 O 3 , TiB 2 , and TiO. This study provides a new method for improving the ignition performance and combustion efficiency of n-B powders.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the effect of nano polypyrrole-modified boron nitride on the performance of phosphate film.Design/methodology/approachBy adding polypyrrole-modified boron nitride to the phosphate solution, a phosphate film is formed on the metal surface, improving its corrosion resistance. The effect of different concentrations of polypyrrole-modified boron nitride on the corrosion resistance of Q235 carbon steel surface was studied. The corrosion resistance of the phosphate film was evaluated using the copper sulfate drop test. The electrochemical corrosion performance of the phosphate film was assessed using the weak polarization curve method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The surface of the samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.FindingsThe results show that samples containing polypyrrole-modified boron nitride have a denser and more uniform phosphate film. When the concentration of polypyrrole-modified boron nitride is 0.6 g/L, the drop time of copper sulfate on the formed phosphate film can reach 219 s, which is a 189% increase compared to the performance of the sample without the additive. The current density is 1.06 × 10−6A/cm2lower than that of the pure phosphate film, indicating the best corrosion resistance. Polypyrrole-modified boron nitride effectively promotes the formation of the phosphate film.Originality/valueThis study used the modification of phosphate solution using nanoparticles to investigate the influence of different nanoparticle concentrations on the phosphate film. The corrosion resistance of the phosphate film was enhanced, providing a method and theoretical guidance for the improvement of phosphate solution formulation.

The existence of an oxide (B 2 O 3 ) film covering the boron (B) surface affects its energy release during combustion. Fluoropolymer modification can help to solve the problem. The electrospinning and solvent anti-solvent methods were utilized to modify boron nanoparticles (n-B) using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a modified material, which can effectively coat B particles. The thermal behavior, combustion characteristics, and condensed combustion products of the B/PVDF composites were investigated and evaluated. The agglomeration size of B particles can be decreased while its reaction heat and combustion intensity are increased. Significantly, the combustion performance of the B/PVDF composites prepared by the electrospinning method is better than that of the B/PVDF composite prepared by the solvent anti-solvent method. These results can be helpful in promoting the practical application of B.

Addition of boron nanoparticles to liquid oxygenated fuel lead to the formation of nano‑boron slurries with high energy density. This study focuses on ignition and combustion characteristics of single droplets of nano‑boron slurries during ultrasonic levitation and effects of different oxygenated fuels on ignition and combustion characteristics of single droplets. In this study, nano‑boron slurries of boron/ethanol, boron/1-hexanol, boron/dimethyl carbonate, boron/triacetate, boron/propylene glycol monomethyl ether and boron/tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether with 10 wt% solid loading were prepared. Moreover, an ultrasonic levitation system was designed and established, which was used for igniting single droplets in ultrasonic levitation state. The results indicate that ignition and combustion process of levitated single droplets of nano‑boron slurries can be divided into three stages: a stable endothermic stage, an oscillation and micro-explosion stage and an aerosol combustion stage . Smoke was observed before aerosol combustion stage of boron/triacetate and boron/tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether, whereas flame jets were observed during combustion of other fuels. Furthermore, emission spectra of BO 2 with high intensity could be observed during aerosol combustion stage. A shorter main chain length of oxygenated fuel facilitates ignition of nano-B slurries. Boron/propylene glycol monomethyl ether exhibited shortest ignition delay , which was approximately 13.8% shorter than that of boron/tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether with the longest ignition delay. Furthermore, a longer main chain length of oxygenated fuel facilitates combustion of nano-B slurries. Nano‑boron slurries with longer main chains (boron/1-hexanol, boron/triacetate and boron/tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether) exhibited brighter and larger flames, regardless of whether they were alcohols, esters or ethers, and quenched zones with bright and clearly delineated edges were observed. Intensity integral and maximum intensity of emission of these three fuels were also higher than those of other fuels. Boron/triacetate demonstrated the best combustion performance, with maximum intensity and intensity integral at 547.8 nm being 3.88 times and 1.9 times those of boron/ethanol, respectively, which has the worst combustion performance. This study provides a theoretical basis and experimental reference for the application of oxygenated-fuel-based nano‑boron slurries and their base liquid fuel selection.

The nano-boron powder (n-B) exhibits remarkable efficacy as a combustion catalyst, making it a prime candidate for use in solid propellant metal burners. Nevertheless, throughout the storage phase, the surface of n-B powder is prone to oxidation and substantial agglomeration, resulting in challenges with ignition and incomplete energy dissipation when utilizing boron powder. In this study, we utilized the coaxial electrospinning technique to produce nanofibers comprised of nano-boron /nitrocellulose/ammonium perchlorate@fluororubber (n-B/NC/AP@F 2602 ), with the nano boron uniformly distributed within the core-shell fibers. In the course of combustion, the fibrous composite of n-B/NC/AP@F 2602 undergoes an escalation in the rates of energy output and energy release, owing to the constraints imposed by external F 2602 ((C₂H₂F₂) n and (C₃F₆) n ). The n-B/NC/AP@F 2602 demonstrates a 1.4-fold increase in peak pressure and a 3.6-fold increase in maximum boost rate when compared to the n-B/NC/AP. The energy performance evaluation results reveal that the mean molecular weight (MC) of combusted products from n-B/NC/AP@F 2602 is 29.2 g·mol −1 , representing a substantial increase compared to that of n-B/NC/AP. The aforementioned findings exemplify that coaxial electrospinning is an exceedingly efficacious technique for enhancing nanostructures, thereby amplifying the reactivity of energetic particles and offering novel insights into their application in energetic materials.

Although one of the simplest methods, various must be resolved before industrializing material jetting technology to fabricate low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC). This research examines related glass-ceramic ink configurations and multi-material jet-sintering. Firstly, we present a method for obtaining a nanoscale borosilicate glass powder via radio frequency plasma spheronization, and its surface is grafted with acrylate molecules to create a jettable nanosol . By fusing this configured glass nanosol with silica nanosol in the typical glass-ceramic LTCC combination (4:6) and adding suitable photosensitizing elements, it can be configured into light-curable LTCC inks. 3D printing of multilayer structures using a multi-material jetting device provides a three-layer structure of ceramic layer - conductive layer - ceramic layer, with the ceramic layer cured by ultraviolet light and the conductor pattern scanned and surface-dried by a laser to obtain high-precision delivery of the green part. The sintering effect between different materials is intact and synchronized shrinkage is achieved. Conductivity tests during the sintering stage yielded high conductivity values up to 1.43 × 10 7 S/m, which further provides the microscopic morphology of the two embedded wires, and the complete and continuous results demonstrate the effectiveness of multilayer wire fabrication. The nanopowder , sol-gel configuration and material jetting under multiple energy loading proposed in this paper significantly support the LTCC additive manufacturing route.

The synthesis of nano-boron/nitrocellulose/ammonium dinitramide@fluorine rubber (n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 ) is accomplished via the coaxial electrospinning technique, with n-B uniformly dispersed within the core–shell fiber. The n-B is evenly distributed within the core–shell fiber, and as a result of F 2602 encapsulation, the moisture absorption of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 has decreased from 191.6 to 10.1%. In the course of combustion, the fibrous composite of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 undergoes an escalation in the rates of energy output and energy release, owing to the constraints imposed by external F 2602 . The n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 demonstrates a 1.3-fold rise in peak pressure and a 1.15-fold increase in maximum pressure rise rate compared to n-B/NC/ADN. Furthermore, the maximum flame temperature is elevated by 150.5 ℃, and the combustion heat is augmented by approximately 8.7%. The findings of the energy performance assessment reveal that the mean molecular weight (MC) of the combustion byproduct of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 stands at 27.6 g·mol −1 , markedly surpassing that of n-B/NC/ADN. The aforementioned findings exemplify that coaxial electrospinning is an exceedingly efficacious technique for enhancing nanostructures, thereby amplifying the reactivity of energetic particles and offering novel insights into their application in energetic materials.

Utilizing micro-channel technology and meticulously regulating the differential flow rates of the oil and water phases, we successfully synthesized remarkably spherical nB/F 2602 /HNS (hexanitrostilben)microspheres, measuring approximately 200 μm in diameter. The morphological and compositional characteristics of these microspheres were thoroughly analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and laser microscopy. Meanwhile, we conducted an in-depth investigation into the catalytic effects of the microspheres on the thermal decomposition of ADN(Ammonium dinitramide)/DAP-4((C 6 H 14 N 2 )[NH4(ClO 4 ) 3 ]), employing thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and burst point assessments. The combustion performance of ADN/DAP-4, both prior to and following the incorporation of nB/F 2602 (fluoroelastomer)/HNS microspheres, was evaluated through high-speed imaging, high-sensitivity infrared thermography, and combustion calorimetry measurements. Furthermore, this study contemplated the combustion mechanism of nB/F 2602 /HNS microspheres. The findings indicated that, after adding nB/F 2602 /HNS microspheres, the thermal decomposition activation energy of ADN/DAP-4 was significantly reduced. These results revealed that the introduction of nB/F 2602 /HNS microspheres markedly enhanced the combustion intensity of ADN/DAP-4, with the pressurization rate accelerating dramatically from 0.55 MPa/s to 3.47 MPa/s. As the burning rate escalated, the maximum combustion temperature increased from 1697°C to 1788°C, and the combustion heat surged from −4478 kJ/kg to −17593 kJ/kg. Moreover, the comparative experimental outcomes, when juxtaposed with samples based on micro-boron (μB), reveal that nano-boron (nB) exhibits a superior burning rate and combustion efficiency. Consequently, the collective findings of these experiments emphatically indicate that nB/F 2602 /HNS markedly enhances the thermolytic and combustion processes of ADN/DAP-4.
