Carbon nanobowls supported ultrafine palladium nanocrystals: A highly active electrocatalyst for the formic acid oxidation

Nan Jia,Yaru Shi,Shuxia Zhang,Xinbing Chen,Pei Chen,Zhongwei An

The carbon supporting materials play a crucial role for improving the utilization and electrocatalytic activity of noble metal nanocrystals . In this work, the high-quality carbon nanobowls (CNBs) with high surface area are synthesized successfully by a simple sol–gel synthetic method. Then, the as-prepared CNBs are used as advanced supporting material to anchor Pd nanocrystals by a facile homogeneous precipitation–reduction method. The as-prepared CNBs supported Pd nanocrystals (Pd/CNBs) nanohybrids are examined thoroughly by various physical characterizations . Physical measurements display that the CNBs facilitate the dispersion and anchorage of Pd nanocrystals due to their high surface area and abundant O-containing surface groups. Cyclic voltammetry , electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , and chronoamperometry measurements reveal that the Pd/CNBs nanohybrids have higher electrocatalytic activity and durability for the formic acid electro oxidation than Vulcan XC-72 carbon supported Pd nanocrystals (Pd/C-72) nanohybrids and commercial Pd/C electrocatalyst .

Shape Engineering of Biomass-Derived Nanoparticles from Hollow Spheres to Bowls through Solvent-Induced Buckling

Chunhong Chen,Xuefeng Li,Jiang Deng,Zhe Wang,Yong Wang

Graphical Super Bowl C ! Non-centrosymmetric nanospheres are prepared by a soft-templating method using biomass as a precursor. Post-treatment of the nanospheres with different solvents can result in retention of the spherical structure or a shapeshift into nanobowls. The nanobowls are used as a support material for loading a CoS 2 catalyst and show excellent activity for the selective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds. The realization of asymmetric hollow carbonaceous nanostructures remains a great challenge, especially when biomass is chosen as the carbon resource through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). Herein, a simple and straightforward solvent-induced buckling strategy is demonstrated for the synthesis of asymmetric spherical and bowl-like carbonaceous nanomaterials. The formation of the bowl-like morphology was attributed to the buckling of the spherical shells induced by the dissolution of the oligomers. The bowl-like particles prepared through this solvent-driven approach demonstrated a well-controlled morphology and a uniform particle size of approximately 360 nm. The obtained nanospheres and nanobowls were loaded with CoS 2 nanoparticles to act as heterogeneous catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds. As expected, the CoS 2 /nanobowls catalyst showed good tolerance to a wide scope of reducible groups and afforded both high activity and selectivity in almost all the tested substrates.

Hierarchical highly ordered SnO2 nanobowl branched ZnO nanowires for ultrasensitive and selective hydrogen sulfide gas sensing

Zhu Li-Yuan,Yuan Kai-Ping,Yang Jia-He,Hang Cheng-Zhou,Ma Hong-Ping,Ji Xin-Ming,Devi Anjana,Lu Hong-Liang,Zhang David Wei

Highly sensitive and selective hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) sensors based on hierarchical highly ordered SnO 2 nanobowl branched ZnO nanowires (NWs) were synthesized via a sequential process combining hard template processing, atomic-layer deposition, and hydrothermal processing. The hierarchical sensing materials were prepared in situ on microelectromechanical systems, which are expected to achieve high-performance gas sensors with superior sensitivity, long-term stability and repeatability, as well as low power consumption. Specifically, the hierarchical nanobowl SnO 2 @ZnO NW sensor displayed a high sensitivity of 6.24, a fast response and recovery speed (i.e., 14 s and 39 s, respectively), and an excellent selectivity when detecting 1 ppm H 2 S at 250 °C, whose rate of resistance change (i.e., 5.24) is 2.6 times higher than that of the pristine SnO 2 nanobowl sensor. The improved sensing performance could be attributed to the increased specific surface area, the formation of heterojunctions and homojunctions, as well as the additional reaction between ZnO and H 2 S, which were confirmed by electrochemical characterization and band alignment analysis. Moreover, the well-structured hierarchical sensors maintained stable performance after a month, suggesting excellent stability and repeatability. In summary, such well-designed hierarchical highly ordered nanobowl SnO 2 @ZnO NW gas sensors demonstrate favorable potential for enhanced sensitive and selective H 2 S detection with long-term stability and repeatability.

Simple and sensitive electrochemical sensing of amethopterin by using carbon nanobowl/cyclodextrin electrode

Jian Wang,Xiuzhi Xu,Zhulai Li,Bin Qiu

Resulted from the severe side effects, the development of inexpensive, simple and sensitive method for amethopterin (ATP, an antineoplastic drug) is very important but it still remains a challenge. In this work, low cost nanohybrid composed of carbon nanobowl (CNB) and β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) (CNB-CD) was prepared with a simple autopolymerization way and applied as electrode material to develop a novel electrochemical sensor of ATP. Scanning-/transmission-electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, photographic image and electrochemical technologies were utilized to characterize morphologies and structure of the as-prepared CNB and CNB-CD materials. On the basic of the coordination advantages from CNB (prominent electrical property and surface area) and β-CD (superior molecule-recognition and solubility capabilities), the CNB-CD nanohybrid modified electrode exhibits superior sensing performances toward ATP, and a low detection limit of 0.002 μM coupled with larger linearity of 0.005–12.0 μM are obtained. In addition, the as-prepared sensor offers desirable repeatability, stability, selectivity and practical application property, confirming that this proposal may have important applications in the determination of ATP.

Self-assembled PtNi layered metallene nanobowls for pH-universal electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ranran Wei,Xiaoying Zhang,Min Yan,Xianlong Wang,Xuewen Wei,Runqi Zhang,Yinglong Wang,Liang Wang,Shuli Yin

Compared with layered materials such as graphite and transition metal disulfide compounds with highly anisotropic in-plane covalent bonds , it is inherently more challenging to obtain independent metallic two-dimensional films with atomic thickness. In this study, PtNi layered metallene nanobowls (LMBs) with multilayer atomic-scale nanosheets and bowl-like structures have been synthesized in one step using structural and electronic effects. The material has the advantage of catalyzing pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with Pt/C, PtNi LMBs exhibited excellent HER activity and stability under all pH conditions. The overpotentials of 10 mA cm −2 at 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1.0 M phosphate buffer and 1.0 M KOH were 14.8, 20.3, and 34.0 mV, respectively. Under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions, the HER Faraday efficiencies reach 98.97%, 98.85%, and 99.04%, respectively. This study provides an example for the preparation of unique multilayer nanobowls, and also provides a basic research platform for the development of special HER materials.

Interface self-assembly preparation of multi-element doped carbon nanobowls with high electrocatalysis activity for oxygen reduction reaction

Xinyan Shi,Jiaxin Song,Fengqi Zhao,Hongxu Gao,Xinbing Chen,Pei Chen,Zhongwei An,Yu Chen

Developing an efficient, stable and low cost oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst is desirable for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here, we have successfully prepared multi-element doped carbon nanobowls by simply mixing the porous carbon nanobowls and sulfur doped graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots in FeCl 3 solution and subsequent high temperature treatment processes. Compared with the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst, the multi-element doped carbon nanobowls display a comparable half-wave potential of 0.82 V, much larger limiting diffusion current density (0.4–0.8 V), better methanol-tolerance and higher long-term stability for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media. The robust three-dimensional porous structure of carbon nanobowls and multiple active centers derived from Fe, N, S and O co-doping are responsible for the excellent performance. This work suggests that such multi-element doped carbon nanobowls can be a promising alternative for Pt-based catalysts in fuel cells.

Sulfur-Doped NiFe Hydroxide Nanobowls with Wrinkling Patterns for Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Yuxuan Zhang,Teng Wang,Renquan Hu,Guangchao Qing,Ningqiang Gong,Yong Yang,Xing-Jie Liang

Hierarchical multiscale wrinkling nanostructures have shown great promise for many biomedical applications, such as cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, synthesizing these materials with precise control remains challenging. Here, we report a sulfur doping strategy to synthesize sub-1 nm NiFe hydroxide ultrathin nanosheets (S-NiFe HUNs). The introduction of sulfur affects the reduction of the band gap and the adjustment of the electronic structure, thereby improving the light absorption ability of the S-NiFe HUNs. Additionally, S-NiFe HUNs show a multilayered nanobowl-like structure that enables multiple reflections of incident light inside the nanostructure, which improved the utilization of incident light and achieved high photothermal conversion. As a result, the as-prepared product with hydrophilic modification (dS-NiFe HUNs) demonstrated enhanced tumor-killing ability in vitro. In a mouse model of breast cancer, dS-NiFe HUNs combined with near-infrared light irradiation greatly inhibited tumor growth and prolonged the mice survival. Altogether, our study demonstrates the great potential of dS-NiFe HUNs for cancer photothermal therapy applications.

Glucose oxidase-loaded colloidal stable WS2 nanobowls for combined starvation/photothermal therapy of colorectal tumors

Zheng Chen,Xiaoyi Zheng,Jiulong Zhao,Jingwen Tang,Lianghao Hu,Shige Wang

Glucose is used as an important nutrient to support cell growth. The glucose oxidase (GOx) can transform glucose into gluconic acid and toxic H 2 O 2 , which can be used for tumor starvation therapy. However, the leakage of GOx may cause severe side effects to the normal tissue. To prevent the accidental leakage of GOx, this study proposes the chemical modification of GOx on the photothermal transducing agent surface, to realize the safe and combined starvation and photothermal therapy of colorectal tumors . Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-modified WS 2 nanobowls (WS 2 -PVP) as a photothermal transducing agent were produced using a one-pot preparation method. Then, α-lipoic acid (LA) molecules were immobilized at the sulfur-deficient sites on the surface of WS 2 nanobowls to afford the chemical loading of GOx through amide bonds. Under the irradiation of a near-infrared laser (808 nm), thermal energy is generated by WS 2 to kill colorectal cancer cells locally. The photothermal conversion efficiency of WS 2 -PVP-LA was 27.2%. This study is anticipated to open up an alternative avenue for the rational design of multifunctional nanotherapeutics for tumor therapy.

Scalable Synthesis of Ir Cluster Anchored on Porous Hollow Carbon Nanobowls for Enhancing pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Yingxiu Zhao,Qiyan Sun,Xinyuan Zhou,Zhiyao Duan,Chuanfang Zhang,Guang-Rui Xu,Dianxing Ju,Lei Wang

Design high-loading with superior activity and high atomic efficiency has consistently been a new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis while challenging in synthetic technology. In this work, a universal solid-state strategy is proposed for large scalable production of high-loading Ir clusters on porous hollow carbon nanobowls (Ir CSs/PHCNBs). The strong electronic interaction between metallic Ir cluster and C on PHCNBs leads to electron redistribution, which significantly improves the electron transfer rate on the interface. The obtained Ir CSs/PHCNBs only require overpotentials of 35, 34, and 37 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with stable outputting of 10 mA cm −2 under acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions, respectively, which exceeds the state-of-the-art HER electrocatalysts. Meanwhile, the Tafel slopes of Ir CSs/PHCNBs for the HER process are 23.07, 48.76, and 28.95 mV dec −1 , greatly lower than that of PHCNBs (152.73, 227.96, and 140.29 mV dec −1 ) and commercial Pt/C (20%) (36.33, 66.10, and 36.61 mV dec −1 ). These results provide a new strategy for the universal synthesis of clusters catalysts and insight into understanding the interface effects between clusters and carbon substrate, facilitating the industrial application of hydrogen production.

3D Hierarchical Nanorod@Nanobowl Array Photoanode with a Tunable Light-Trapping Cutoff and Bottom-Selective Field Enhancement for Efficient Solar Water Splitting

Songtao Tang,Mingyang Li,Duan Huang,Weitao Qiu,Shuang Xiao,Yexiang Tong,Shihe Yang

Constructing 3D nanophotonic structures is regarded as an effective means to realize both efficient light absorption and efficient charge separation. However, most of the 3D structures reported so far enhance light trapping beyond the absorption onset wavelength, and thus greatly attentuate or even completely block the long-wavelength light, which could otherwise be efficiently absorbed by narrow-bandgap materials in a Z-scheme or tandem device. In addition, constructing a 3D conductive substrate often involves complex processes causing increased cost and upscaling problems. To overcome these shortcomings, a novel 3D hematite nanorod@nanobowl array nanophotonic structure is designed and fabricated by a low-cost method. This unique structure can enhance light absorption with tunable cutoffs and rationally concentrate photons right above the bowl bottom, enabling efficient charge separation. By loading NiFeO x as a cocatalyst, a high photocurrent density of 3.41 ± 0.2 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) can be obtained, which is 2.35 times that with a planar structure in otherwise the same system.

0.2 V Electrolysis Voltage-Driven Alkaline Hydrogen Production with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanobowl-Supported Ultrafine Rh Nanoparticles of 1.4 nm

Nan Jia,Yanping Liu,Lei Wang,Pei Chen,Xinbing Chen,Zhongwei An,Yu Chen

The development of highly effective and low-cost electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen production via water splitting is still a great challenge. Herein, porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanobowls (N-CBs) have been designed and used for the controlled growth of ultrafine rhodium (Rh) nanoparticles. With the aid of interfacial bonding of Rh and N, ultrafine Rh nanoparticles with an average size of 1.4 nm have been successfully immobilized on the N-CBs. This Rh/N-CB electrocatalyst shows superior activity and high stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR). More importantly, the Rh/N-CBs exhibit high activity for hydrogen production from water electrolysis, marking with a cell voltage of 0.2 V to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm–2 when they serve as cathodic electrocatalysts for the HER and anodic electrocatalysts for the HzOR in 1 M KOH with 0.5 M hydrazine. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate that a near-zero hydrogen adsorption free energy produced by the chemical bonding of Rh with the pyrrole-N doped in N-CBs is responsible for the excellent HER activity of Rh/N-CBs electrocatalysts.

Pressure difference-induced synthesis of P-doped carbon nanobowls for high-performance supercapacitors

Yan Zhou,Zixin Jia,Lingling Shi,Zhen Wu,Binyong Jie,Siyuan Zhao,Liyuan Wei,Aiguo Zhou,Junwu Zhu,Xin Wang,Yongsheng Fu

Young-Laplace equation and Kelvin equation, as two important and foundational laws in interface physico-chemistry, can reasonably interpret many complicated physico-chemical phenomena at interfaces and have been widely applied to many practical problems arisen from the production and humankind activities. In this work, by means of the large pressure difference generated on a curved surface of nano-sized liquid under the action of surface tension, the transformations from the hollow carbon nanospheres to the carbon nanobowls and the phosphorus-doped carbon nanobowls have been successfully achieved. Compared with the hollow carbon nanospheres, the carbon nanobowls and phosphorus-doped carbon nanobowls possess high packing densities, which are beneficial to form a favorable conductive pathway, leading to enhanced electrochemical performance. In particular, the phosphorus-doped carbon nanobowls, as electrode material for supercapacitors, show a high specific capacitance of 246.22 F cm −3 (273.58 F g −1 ) and can maintain the capacitance at a high current density of 10 A g −1 without noticeable decay over 40,000 cycles. More importantly, the symmetric supercapacitor based on the phosphorus-doped carbon nanobowls exhibits high energy density and power density as well as excellent cycling stability. This work widens the application of Young-Laplace equation in bowl-like materials and offers new insights into the formation mechanism.
