Rapid and targeted intervention during sudden mercury pollution incidents can significantly mitigate the harmful effects of mercury dissemination. Mesoporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated great promise for mercury wastewater purification, owing to their exceptional adsorption capacity. However, these materials often underperform at exceptionally high or low Hg(II) concentrations, limiting their use in emergencies. To address this issue, this study leverages nanostructure engineering techniques and, for the first time, fine-tunes the proportion of surfactants to construct a thiol-functionalized UiO-66 MOF (Nic-UiO-66-SH) with size-adjustable nano-ion channels for rapid Hg(II) pollution management in emergency contexts. The Nic-UiO-66-SH, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1695.87 mg g −1 , can quickly and effectively adsorb Hg(II) at extreme concentrations (10–600 mg L −1 ) within 2.5–105 min, bringing the concentration down to drinking water standards (<0.002 mg L −1 ). This superior performance is attributed to the concentration-specific adsorption mechanism of ions in adaptive nano-ion channels based on Debye radius theory, which guides the precise control of channel size. Molecular simulations further validate the significant role of ion channels in optimizing Hg(II) diffusion and adsorption. This work establishes a theoretical foundation for the development of emergency wastewater purification materials and promotes their practical application in pollution response scenarios.

The application of aqueous electrolytes is generally limited by their narrow electrochemical window (ECW), which sets an intrinsic limit on the practical voltage and energy density of fabricated energy storage devices. Herein, the coacervates of nano-ions are proposed as aqueous lithium-ion electrolytes with both high ion conductivity and broadened ECW. The hybrid complex coacervates of 1 nm nano-anions, metatungstate ([W 12 O 40 ] 8− ), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are studied for their unique salt-hardening effect. The framework of random percolated nano-ions interweaved by PEG chains is demonstrated from small angle X-ray/neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) and micro-rheology measurements. The introduced extra Li + can complex with the PEG backbone for strengthened PEG/nano-ion interaction. The relaxation dynamics follows the model of sticky reptation by treating the binding of Li + as effective stickers and this leads to the observed salt hardening effect, e.g., enhanced viscosity with the increased LiCl concentrations. This hybrid coacervate exhibits excellent ionic conductivity (∼0.027 S/cm), and the super-ionic nature of ion conduction is demonstrated employing fractional Walden rule. Suggested from diffusion ordered spectroscopy studies, the water molecules confined in the framework of the coacervates show hindered diffusive dynamics and this contributes to the extended ECW (∼2 V), demonstrating its potential application as aqueous lithium electrolytes.

Ion-conductive polymers having a well-defined phase-separated structure show the potential application of separating mono- and bivalent ion separation. In this work, three side-chain-type poly(arylene ether sulfone)-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been fabricated to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the polymer backbone within AEMs on the Cl–/NO3– and Cl–/SO42– separation performance. Our investigations via small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), positron annihilation, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrate that the as-prepared AEM with a rigid benzimidazole structure in the backbone bears subnanometer ion channels resulting from the arrangement of the rigid polymer backbone. In particular, SAXS results demonstrate that the rigid benzimidazole-containing AEM in the wet state has an ion cluster size of 0.548 nm, which is smaller than that of an AEM with alkyl segments in the backbone (0.760 nm). Thus, in the electrodialysis (ED) process, the former exhibits a superior capacity of separating Cl–/SO42– ions relative to latter. Nevertheless, the benzimidazole-containing AEM shows an inability to separate the Cl–/NO3– ions, which is possibly due to the similar ion size of the two. The higher rotational energy barrier (4.3 × 10–3 Hartree) of benzimidazole units and the smaller polymer matrix free-volume (0.636%) in the AEM significantly contribute to the construction of smaller ion channels. As a result, it is believed that the rigid benzimidazole structure of this kind is a benefit to the construction of stable subnanometer ion channels in the AEM that can selectively separate ions with different sizes.

Separating low/high-valent ions with sub-nanometer sizes is a crucial yet challenging task in various areas (e.g., within environmental, healthcare, chemical, and energy engineering). Satisfying high separation precision requires membranes with exceptionally high selectivity. One way to realize this is constructing well-designed ion-selective nanochannels in pressure-driven membranes where the separation mechanism relies on combined steric, dielectric exclusion, and Donnan effects. To this aim, charged nanochannels in polyamide (PA) membranes are created by incorporating ionic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers via interfacial polymerization. Both sub-10 nm sizes of the ionic PAMAM dendrimer molecules and their gradient distributions in the PA nanofilms contribute to the successful formation of defect-free PA nanofilms, containing both internal (intramolecular voids) and external (interfacial voids between the ionic PAMAM dendrimers and the PA matrix) nanochannels for fast transport of water molecules. The external nanochannels with tunable ionizable groups endow the PA membranes with both high low/high-valent co-ion selectivity and chemical cleaning tolerance, while the ion sieving/transport mechanism was analyzed by employing the Donnan steric pore model with dielectric exclusion.

Rechargeable lithium (Li) metal batteries are considered the most promising of Li-based energy storage technologies. However, tree-like dendrite produced by irregular Li+ electrodeposition restricts it wide applications. Herein, based on a cation-microphase-regulation strategy, we create solid–liquid electrolytes (SLEs) by absorbing commercial liquid electrolytes into polyethylene glycol (PEG) engineered nanoporous Al2O3 ceramic membranes. By means of molecular dynamics simulations and comprehensive experiments, we show that Li ions are regulated and promoted in the two microphases, the channel phase and nonchannel phase, respectively. The channel phase can achieve homogeneous Li+ flux distribution by multiple mechanisms, including its uniform array of nanochannels and ability to suppress lateral dendrite growth by its high modulus. In the nonchannel phase, PEG chains swollen by electrolyte facilitate desolvation and fast conduction of Li+. As a result, the studied SLEs exhibit high ionic conductivity, low interfacial resistance, and the unique ability to stabilize deposition at the Li anode. By means of galvanostatic cycling studies in symmetric Li cells and Li/Li4Ti5O12 cells, we further show that the materials open a path to Li metal batteries with excellent cycling performance.

Nano-ions can complex with polyelectrolytes for coacervates with hierarchical structures; however, the rational design of functional coacervations is still rare due to the poor understanding of their structure–property relationship from their complex interaction. Herein, 1 nm anionic metal oxide clusters, PW 12 O 40 3- , with well-defined, mono-disperse structures are applied to complex with cationic polyelectrolyte and the system shows tunable coacervation via the alternation of counterions (H + and Na + ) of PW 12 O 40 3- . Suggested from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and isothermal titration studies, the interaction between PW 12 O 40 3- and cationic polyelectrolytes can be modulated by the bridging effect of counterions via hydrogen bonding or ion–dipole interaction to carbonyl groups of polyelectrolytes. The condensed structures of the complexed coacervates are explored by small angle X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, respectively. The coacervate with H + as counterions shows both crystallized and discrete PW 12 O 40 3- clusters, with a loose polymer-cluster network in comparison to the system of Na + which shows a dense packing structure with aggregated nano-ions filling the meshes of polyelectrolyte networks. The bridging effect of counterions helps understand the super-chaotropic effect observed in nano-ion system and provides avenues for the design of metal oxide cluster-based functional coacervates.
