The abuse of antibiotics has led to widespread antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and environmental pollution. In order to solve these problems, a lot of studies have been carried out mainly focusing on the modification and recombination of organic reagents, but bacteria are still easy to adapt to it, so they cannot be thoroughly solved. Here, we present an integrated pollution-free synergistic antibacterial nanotechnology using inorganic nano-Cu 2 O, which could not only enhance the efficacy of aminoglycoside antibiotics, but also eliminate their environmental pollution by photocatalytic degradation. It was found that Cu 2 O showed significantly synergistic antibacterial effect (1+1>2) when combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics against Escherichia coli . The inhibition zone area increased by 59.0% when Cu 2 O combined with neomycin. This reduces dosage and the risk of AMR, and does not pollute the environment after degradation. Next, to explore the synergistic mechanisms, we have studied the interaction of antibiotics with nanoparticles, as well as the interaction of antibacterial agents with bacteria. At last, we believe that the destruction of cell walls by Cu 2 O facilitates the entry of antibiotics into cells is the reason for their synergy.

In-situ microcalorimetry was used to obtain the molar surface Gibbs energy, molar surface enthalpy and molar surface entropy of Cu 2 O nanoparticles, and their influences of particle size and morphology were investigated. The activity and mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange were discussed with a correlation between the Cu 2 O surface energy. Results indicated that the surface thermodynamic functions increased with the decrease of the particle size. The Cu 2 O surface energy was of the following order: spherical > octahedral > tremella-like with corresponding values of 9.826, 8.438 and 6.901 kJ mol −1 , respectively. The order of catalytic activity was tremella-like > particle spherical > octahedral with a corresponding degradation rate of 94.79, 70.10 and 68.19%, respectively. The photocatalytic activity was significantly related to surface energy. Interestingly, we found that nano-Cu 2 O with low surface energy exhibited a high photocatalytic activity. This study provided a new understanding of the surface-activity relationship between nanomaterial surface energy and catalytic properties.

The activities, selectivities, and stabilities of nanoparticles in heterogeneous reactions are size-dependent. In order to investigate the influencing laws of particle size and temperature on kinetic parameters in heterogeneous reactions, cubic nano-Cu 2 O particles of four different sizes in the range of 40–120 nm have been controllably synthesized. In situ microcalorimetry has been used to attain thermodynamic data on the reaction of Cu 2 O with aqueous HNO 3 and, combined with thermodynamic principles and kinetic transition-state theory, the relevant reaction kinetic parameters have been evaluated. The size dependences of the kinetic parameters are discussed in terms of the established kinetic model and the experimental results. It was found that the reaction rate constants increased with decreasing particle size. Accordingly, the apparent activation energy, pre-exponential factor, activation enthalpy, activation entropy, and activation Gibbs energy decreased with decreasing particle size. The reaction rate constants and activation Gibbs energies increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, the logarithms of the apparent activation energies, pre-exponential factors, and rate constants were found to be linearly related to the reciprocal of particle size, consistent with the kinetic models. The influence of particle size on these reaction kinetic parameters may be explained as follows: the apparent activation energy is affected by the partial molar enthalpy, the pre-exponential factor is affected by the partial molar entropy, and the reaction rate constant is affected by the partial molar Gibbs energy.
In situ microcalorimetry, combined with theoretical models, was used to investigate the reaction kinetic parameters of cubic nano-Cu 2 O, and those effects of particle size and temperature were discussed systematically.

A synthesis method was introduced for the large-scale preparation of a nano Cu 2 O/Cu-modified activated carbon composite, L-nano Cu 2 O/Cu–C. As the adsorbent, the synthesized composite could efficiently remove radioactive iodide ions (I − ) from simulated water. A lab-scale integrated novel countercurrent two-stage adsorption and membrane separator system was designed to assess the practical application of L-nano Cu 2 O/Cu–C. Stable and high I − removal efficiency was achieved during the operation of the system. The effluent met the water quality requirements, and the membrane fouling rate was lower. This study provides a potential process to treat water contaminated with radioactive I − in practical applications.

Nano Cu 2 O/Cu modified activated carbon composite (nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C) was firstly synthesized by a simple and efficient hydrothermal method and used to adsorb iodide ion (I − ) from simulated radioactive wastewater . Nano Cu 2 O/Cu loaded and uniformly distributed on activated carbon with a diameter of 80–100 nm. The composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance, which was primarily attributable to the synergistic effect of nano Cu 2 O/Cu and activated carbon. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately represented the experimental data of I − adsorption. On the basis of the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of I − by nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C was 41.2 mg/g, which is significantly higher than pure nano Cu 2 O and activated carbon. The adsorption was affected only slightly by pH and other interfering ions. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to elucidate the possible adsorption mechanism. This study provides new insight into the fabrication and practical application of high-performance adsorbent in removing radioactive I − from wastewater.

A newly developed adsorbent nano Cu 2 O/Cu-modified activated carbon composite (nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C) was used to remove radioactive iodide ions (I − ) from simulated wastewater. The emphasis of this research is to improve adsorption performance and obtain higher I − removal efficiency compared with the single-stage adsorption. To fully develop the amount of adsorption by nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C, and to increase the decontamination factor (DF) of I − , an improved countercurrent two-stage adsorption (ICTA) process was introduced. In the ICTA process, measures dealing with desorption of loaded adsorbent in the stage-two adsorption were taken and more extensive application of countercurrent two-stage adsorption (CTA) process could be made after the improvement to ICTA process in this study. Furthermore, in order to analyze the process and determine the I − concentration in the effluent, a calculation method was devised based on the Langmuir isotherm equations and adsorption accumulation principle. The mean DFs were 177, 166, and 89.7, respectively, when the initial I − concentrations were 5.00, 10.0, and 20.0 mg/L; and the adsorbent dosage was 1.25 g/L. These results were approximately 8.76, 8.97, and 6.79 times higher, respectively, than with conventional single-stage adsorption. The experimental values of the I − concentration were higher than the calculated ones, which could be ascribed to desorption of the residual loaded adsorbent and formation of CuI in the adsorption at stage 1. Formation of CuI in the adsorption at stage 1 was considered to be the predominant reason.

Summary The morphology of nano-Cu 2 O profoundly determines its catalytic performance. Here, we provide two universal and reliable techniques to modify the surface of nano-Cu 2 O. First, we detail steps for the systematic tuning of the exposed facets of nano-Cu 2 O ranging from low index to high index using reductant-controlled technique in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Second, we describe steps for facet-directed precipitation in which the morphology-dependent ZIF-8 (a type of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks) shells on different nano-Cu 2 O are well introduced. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Luo et al. (2022) .
