Design and synthesis of dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethane as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrates

Dandan Li,Dinggen Hu,Jihuai Tan,Qinghao Zhu,Zhulan Liu,Chen Su,Jianbin Chen,Yunfeng Cao

Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper. This study provides a new framework for the preparation of high quality, multifunctional, environmentally friendly water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper substrates.

Robust, ultrathin and flexible electromagnetic interference shielding paper designed with all-polysaccharide hydrogel and MXene

Jiasheng Wei,Lei Dai,Xiangju Xi,Zhuo Chen,Meng Zhu,Cuihua Dong,Shujiang Ding,Tingzhou Lei

An effective strategy was demonstrated to design an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding paper via a facile surface treatment on paper. TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) were first integrated with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, and subsequently cast onto a filter paper with cationic guar gum (CGG) in a sequential way. TOCN and CGG generated a self-assembling hydrogel and formed a MXene-containing hydrogel film on top of the filter paper. The hydrogel film enhanced the tensile strength (9.49 MPa) of composite paper, and resulted in a 17 % increase as compared to the control. The composite paper containing 80 mg MXene (namely, 2.07 mg·cm −2 ) showed a conductivity of 3843 S·m −1 and EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 49.37 dB. Furthermore, the 2-layer assembled TC-M 80 hydrogel composite paper achieved an EMI SE of 73.99 dB. Importantly, this composite paper showed higher EMI SE and lower thickness than a lot of reported materials. The presence of TOCN and CGG also protected MXene against several solvents and the incorporation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) further improved the durability of the composite paper. This work provides a novel and simple strategy to design robust, ultrathin and flexible EMI shielding materials, and it might also inspire other work in paper-based functional materials.

Fabrication of an Amino Functionalized Paper-Based Material for Highly Efficient Detection and Adsorption of Formaldehyde

Fan Zhang,Hui Chi,Xiaotong Dong,Xiaona Huang,Kun Xu,Yungang Bai,Pixin Wang

An amino functionalized paper-based material that utilized amino functionalized polymer particles as sensing probes and adsorption sites was fabricated via internal sizing technology for application in formaldehyde detection and adsorption. A large specific surface area and the porous structure of the paper fibers enable the application of the composite paper-based material as a sensor at low concentrations of primary amine groups. The material reacts with low levels of formaldehyde, resulting in a concentration-based change in the pH, which is rapidly expressed as a color change. After exposure to formaldehyde (0.02 mg/m3) for 10 min, the color of the composite paper-based material changed from pink to brown, demonstrating the high sensitivity of the material, and this transition could be clearly observed using the naked eye. Additionally, the composite paper-based material acts as an adsorbent at a high content of amino groups, owing to a rapid addition reaction with formaldehyde, exhibiting a high adsorption capacity. Considering the high sensitivity, adsorption capacity, and adsorption speed for formaldehyde, the as-developed composite paper-based material exhibits promising application potential in the field of formaldehyde detection and adsorption.

Fabrication of bio-based composite fillers based on the combination of crystallization and gelation

Jingyi Nie,Xinming Liu,Jiantao Liang,Meiyun Zhang,Wenjia Han

Fillers are the second major component of paper, and can give certain properties to paper-based materials. However, if we want to use fillers to develop novel functional paper-based materials, some challenges have to be considered such as filler functionality, retention rate, and the negative effects. To meet with these challenges, the present work proposed a fabrication concept of bio-based composite fillers. The concept combined the crystallization of target component and the gelation process of chitosan (CS), simultaneously. The gels carried and protected the crystals, and served as bridge between crystal of fillers and the paper matrix. To explore and demonstrate the concept, CaCO 3 /CS bio-based composites were successfully fabricated. The composite fillers were further optimized to be suitable for paper-making. The fabrication concept could significantly increase the filler retention rate (up to 90.57 %), the filler bondability (increased over 10 times) and the mechanical strength (59.7 % higher than paper without fillers). The fabrication concept was also applicable to functional materials. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)/CS composite fillers were successfully fabricated, and endowed the resulted paper with high surface area (180 times higher than pure cellulose paper). This fabrication concept would be useful to develop functional paper-based materials in the future.

A paper-based visible light-responsive imaging material

Mi Zhang,Xiaobing He,Jie Wei

In this paper, we have developed a paper-based optical imaging material responding to visible light. This material consists of a thioxanthone (TX) derivative with the additional phenyl carbazole chromophore, namely 1-phenyl-11,12a-dihydrothiochromeno (3,2-b) carbazol-13 (5H)-one (TX-PC), and leuco crystal violet (LCV). TX-PC is newly synthesized and characterized by 1 HNMR, FTIR and high-resolution mass spectrometer. As a visible light absorbing Type II photoinitiator, TX-PC has an excellent absorption property in the visible region in the absence of an added co-initiator. In other words, TX-PC degrades into lively free radicals when irradiating under visible light which resulting in a color reaction on LCV . The degree of reaction is characterized by UV–vis spectrophotometer. In this study, this material is used for imaging within visible light because of the high efficiency color reaction. We coat a paper substrate with this TX-PC/LCV solution and cover with a pattern photomask. Under the irradiation of the visible light, color reaction occurs to irradiated area while the rest remains colorless. Thus the two areas are distinguished to obtain a clear image as same as the original version.

Preparation of multi-barrier and multi-functional paper-based materials by chitosan, ethyl cellulose and green walnut husk biorefinery products for sustainable food packaging

Bingzhen Liu,Fangfei Sun,Peiyuan Zhu,Kun Wang,Lincai Peng,Yongliang Zhuang,Hui Li

The growing interest in paper-based materials for packaging is driven by their renewable and eco-friendly characteristics. However, their poor barrier performance against water, oil, and gas limits their application in the food packaging industry. In this study, we developed a simple dual-layer coating method to create water- and oil-repellent, gas barrier, antioxidant, and antibacterial paper-based materials using naturally-derived materials, including chitosan (CS), ethyl cellulose (EC), and cascade biorefinery products from green walnut husk (GWHE and CNC). The bottom CS/CNC oil-resistant coating and the top EC/GWHE water-resistant coating were applied to the paper surface. The synergistic effect of these coatings enhances the gas barrier and imparts functional properties to the paper. Compared to uncoated paper, the dual-layer-coated paper demonstrated a 239.1 % increase in tensile index, a higher kit rating value of 12/12, a lower Cobb 60 value of 3.21 mg/m 2 , a 44.0 % decrease in water vapor permeability (WVP), and a 90.7 % reduction in air permeability (AP). Additionally, this coated paper exhibited good antioxidant and antibacterial properties and favorable biodegradability. This study provides novel insights into the valorization of GWH waste and presents a sustainable strategy for producing high-performance paper-based materials for food packaging applications.

Fully bio-based grease resistant composite coating: chitosan-Genipin-microfibrillated cellulose for sustainable paper food packaging

Baoying Shi,Siqi Xie,Dengyu Huang,Yufeng Wang

As awareness of health concerns continues to rise, the development of new generations of sustainable food packaging materials has emerged as a focal point of significant attention. This study presents the development of a fully bio-based grease resistant composite coating composed of chitosan (CS), genipin (GP), and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) for sustainable paper food packaging. The synergistic effects of crosslinking between CS and GP, combined with electrostatic interactions between CS and MFC, enabled the formation of a dense, interconnected coating layer on paper substrates. Systematic optimization of coating formulations revealed that a 2 wt% CS, 0.1 wt% GP, and 15 wt% MFC composition achieved maximum grease resistance (kit rating: 12/12) at a remarkably low coating weight of 4 g/m 2 , outperforming existing chitosan-based coatings requiring higher application weights for medium performance. The composite coating significantly enhanced mechanical properties, with two kinds of food wrapping paper after coating exhibiting tensile strength improvements of 25 % and 13 %, and burst strength increases of 25 % and 41 %, respectively. Additionally, water vapor transmission rates decreased by 22 % and 28 %, demonstrating enhanced moisture barrier functionality. Practical evaluations have confirmed the coating's robust resistance to various organic solvents, as well as its stability in hot oil. Simulated food contact tests using fried chicken and sausages revealed no detectable grease penetration or structural compromise in coated papers. This study establishes the CS/GP/MFC coating as a high-performance, environmentally sustainable alternative to fluorinated and non-biodegradable materials, with broad applicability in grease resistant food packaging systems.

A flexible electrokinetic power generator derived from paper and ink for wearable electronics

Yulin Lv,Feng Gong,Hao Li,Qiang Zhou,Xinlin Wu,Wenbin Wang,Rui Xiao

Low-grade energy harvesting from the ambient environment promises to relieve the energy shortage in the remote regions or emergency needs. The reported materials employed for low-grade energy harvesting requires costly raw materials and highly technical skills, hindering the applications in isolated regions or after natural disasters. Herein, we report the use of commercial air-laid paper and carbon ink to harvest electrokinetic energy in the capillary flow. The paper-based electrokinetic power generator with size of 6 cm × 1 cm could continuously generate an output voltage of 0.35 V and current of 33.9 μA in the ambient condition (20 °C and 50% Relative Humidity). The output power could maintain for over 120 h. When connected in series and in parallel, the power generator with excellent flexibility could power some common electronic devices in the atmosphere, such as light-emitting diode, electronic calculator and watch. This work offers a rational approach to employing low-cost materials for ambient energy harvesting, thus advancing the application in portable and wearable electronic devices.

Superhydrophobic and ethylene scavenging paper doped with halloysite nanotubes for food packaging applications

Fuyou Yu,Kun Wang,Hui Li,Lincai Peng

Paper-based food packaging materials have gained great interests along with increasing environmental concern and fossil energy crisis. Inspired by strong adhesion of marine mussels, we proposed a simple and facile method to prepare a durable paper-based packaging material in combination of superhydrophobicity and ethylene scavenging capability, which is first surface decoration of polydopamine (PDA) on paper surface followed by immersion into mixture solution containing halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and stearic acid (SA). The PDMS/SA/HNTs@PDA-coated paper with a WCA of 157.5° exhibited excellent anti-fouling, self-cleaning and potential application in liquid food packaging. The obtained functional paper not only presented improved mechanical, barrier properties and outstanding anti-bacterial adhesion, but also could effectively extend shelf-life of cherry tomatoes under ambient conditions. After suffering from various rigorous treatments, the resultant multifunctional paper still exhibited excellent superhydrophobic durability. This study provided a new insight into fabrication of multifunctional paper-based materials for food packaging applications.

An Eco-friendly Cellulose Paper-Based Tactile Sensor Driven by the Triboelectric Effect

Changmei Lin,Zhenhao Pei,Jun Chen,Jinxin Lan,Hai Huang,Xiaojuan Ma,Shilin Cao

Tactile sensors are an important area in developing electronic skins and human–machine interfacing. Herein, we reported an eco-friendly cellulose paper based tactile sensor driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Enabled by the surface modification of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) and polypyrrole (PPy), the triboelectric negative performance and conductivity of cellulose paper were improved; therefore, the modified cellulose paper could be applied to the triboelectric negative material and electrode for TENG. At the contact and separation mode (CS mode), the short-circuit current (ISC), open-circuit voltage (VOC), and power density of the corresponding device were improved to 0.52 μA, 11.6 V, and 736.9 μW/m2. In addition, a single-electrode TENG based on this modified cellulose paper was also obtained by pairing it with human skin. The results indicated that this single-electrode TENG could generate a voltage of 23.8 V, current of 1.1 μA, and surface charge of 4.3 nC. Meanwhile, a tactile sensor for written stroke recognition based on the single-electrode TENG was also demonstrated.

Superhydrophobic flexible conductive PFDT/CB/MXene@Paper for high-efficiency EMI shielding and Joule heating applications

Qingtao Li,Wenke Yang,Kang Sun,Yan Guo,Hu Liu,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Flexible wearable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have attracted great attention with the development of portable electronic devices, and paper based EMI shielding materials turn to be ideal candidates due to their flexibility, biodegradability and low cost. In this study, conductive MXene nanosheet decorated paper was developed through a simple dip-coating technique, where the MXene nanosheets can be strongly adhered onto the surface of cellulose fiber to construct an effective conductive network. Meanwhile, a low surface energy and micro–nano-structured 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT)/carbon black (CB) layer was further introduced onto the surface to construct a superhydrophobic surface, avoiding the hygroexpansion of paper in water or moisture environments effectively. As a result, the prepared PFDT/CB/MXene@Paper exhibits reflection dominant EMI shielding performance, and a specific SE value of up to 3339.6 dB cm−2 g−1 was achieved. Importantly, the EMI shielding performance can be well maintained towards cyclic bending and in various acid, alkali, salt, and UV environments, which enhance the applicability of paper based functional materials significantly. Finally, its high conductivity also endows it with good Joule heating performance, improving the wearing comfort when used as a wearable EMI shielding material. This study will undoubtedly provide a high-efficiency design strategy for fabricating high-performance paper based EMI shielding materials.

Simultaneously improving water resistance and mechanical strength of hemp fabric and paper substrates enabled by silicone-containing waterborne polyurethane surface coating

Lihua Deng,Zhihui Sui,Lijian Sun,Qi Zhang,Mengmeng Zhang,Bin Zu

Hemp fabric and cellulose paper as cellulosic materials possess excellent properties, including renewability and biodegradability. However, their potential for application on a wide scale is constrained by inherent limitations. Therefore, their functionalization is necessary. This paper presents a waterborne polyurethane-derived coating that exhibits hydrophobic properties, enhanced firmness, and augmented strength when applied to hemp fabric and cellulose paper. Silicone-containing waterborne polyurethane acrylate (WPUASi) emulsions were synthesized via the interpenetrating polymer network method and subsequently applied to hemp fabric and filter paper. The results revealed that the water contact angle (WCA) of hemp fabric and paper exhibited an increase from 0° to 127.51° and 113.23°, respectively, following the application of the WPUASi coating. The mechanical strength of hemp fabric is increased by 19 %, and the folding strength of filter paper is increased by 23 times. Following washing, the water contact angle and mechanical strength of hemp fabric can still be maintained to a certain extent, indicating that the coating has retained its desired firmness. Furthermore, the coating has been applied to an array of alternative fiber materials, including cotton, polyester cotton, acrylic fiber, hardboard, and balsa wood. The results demonstrated that the WCA remains consistent, oscillating between 100° and 120°. At the end, we applied the coating together with curcumin on hemp fabric to prepare a multifunctional fabric with UV resistance, antibacterial, and hydrophobic properties. In conclusion, this functionalized waterborne polyurethane coating will guide cellulosic materials towards diverse applications.
