Recently, the phenomenon of fentanyls overdose leading to death is emerging in an endless stream. There is an urgent requirement to quickly identify fentanyl content in body fluids for medical and judicial purposes. With this in mind, we present a paper-based SERS substrate decorated with uniform gold nanospheres treated by chloride ion for the detection of fentanyl citrate in urine and serum. In particular, the paper-based SERS sensor was prepared by liquid/liquid self-assembly technique and chloride ion was introduced to clean and modify the substrate surface, which improved the sensitivity of the solid substrate with an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 1.64 × 10 5 . Moreover, the uniformity of each paper-based substrate and the repeatability on different batches of substrate were excellent, and there was no obvious change in the intensity response of Raman spectra within a month. As a result, the quantitative analysis of fentanyl citrate in artificial urine and rat serum were performed based on the modified paper-based substrate with the limit of detection as low as 0.59 μg/mL and 2.78 μg/mL, respectively. Both the concentrations of the two biological samples with the Raman signal intensity were linearly plotted and the recovery of the spiked samples with different concentrations was collected to verify the accuracy of the quantitative curves. All the results suggest that this work makes SERS method available for the rapid identification and quantitative analysis of illicit drug in the real biological samples.

A disposable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was prepared by successively spraying silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto commercial filter paper using an inexpensive consumer sprayer. The strong surface enhancement of AgNPs and chemical stability of AuNPs can be advantageously combined. The substrate exhibited excellent SERS activity for malachite green (MG), methylene blue (MB), and crystal violet (CV) under 785-nm excitation, with limits of detection (LODs) of 4.3 × 10 −9 , 2.0 × 10 −8 , and 8.1 × 10 −8 M, respectively. The substrate exhibited long-term stability, and it can be stored under ambient conditions for 4 weeks with a relative standard deviation of less than 3% among peak intensities. The substrate also showed good reproducibility with a relative standard deviation of 7.1% among different substrate peak intensities. The substrates enable on-site determination of residual fishery drugs and distinguish MG, MB, and CV mixtures in spiked fish within 5 min, and the average recoveries in fish scales and fish meat were better 90.1% and 76.9%, respectively. The method exhibited rapidity, simplicity, and high sensitivity and is expected to be used for the screening of additives in food.

The sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) highly depends on the number of hotspots under laser spot and the number of analyte molecules near hotspots. Thus, a SERS substrate was constructed by assembling Ag nanocubes on a paper, which was previously modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) through in-situ polymerization. On the prepared substrate, the density of hotspots and analyte molecules near the hotspots are increased by the high surface area of paper and the modification of MIP. Malachite green (MG) is a toxic and prohibited drug that is very polluted to the environment, so monitor of trace MG is vital in complex environment. The minimum detectable concentration of MG molecules on the paper-based SERS substrate is 3.65 × 10 −3 ng/mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 8.58 % and the EF is approximate to 1.78 × 10 7 . In addition, MG molecules can be accurately detected in the presence of interfering molecules, the imprinting factors of MG is up to 1.69. Furthermore, the substrate can be used for the detection of MG in shrimp leach liquor, and its minimum detectable concentration is as low as 0.365 ng/mL, the RSD is 7.49 %. The above results indicate that this substrate can be used for detecting trace molecule in complex samples.

In this study, we developed a simple, inexpensive and easily fabricable paper-based SERS substrate with high sensitivity and reproducibility. The filter paper has natural pleats and small pores that allow the metal nanoparticles to be deposited and arranged on the paper to form large area SERS ‘active sites’. Silver nanoparticles can be embedded and grown on cellulose nanocrystals framework through the in situ reduction to form cellulose nanocrystal–silver (CNC–Ag) composites, which are coated on the filter paper to form composite paper-based substrates. The CNC–Ag composites further filled the pores on the surface of the filter paper and improved the adhesive rate of metal nanoparticles, thus the reproducibility of the SERS sensor has been improved. At the same time, because it has the agglomerating effect on samples, the hydrophobic dodecyl mercaptan covered on paper-based substrates can improve detection limit of analyte. Furthermore, we demonstrate that paper-based SERS substrates can efficiently detect two substances, including phenylethanolamine A and metronidazole. The limits of detection for phenylethanolamine A and metronidazole were found to as low as 5 × 10 −9 M and 2 × 10 −7 M, respectively. The paper-based SERS substrates offer great potential for label-free and on-site detection of trace substances.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is the key to SERS technology and it is still a basic focus to fabricate desirable SERS substrates offering multiple advantages of strong Raman enhancement and good reproducibility and portability. A flexible paper-based SERS substrate were fabricated involving the use of Au nanocubes (NCs) monolayer. Au NCs were generated with tunable size in the range of 24 to 63 nm through seed-mediated growth method. The effect of support on SERS properties of Au NCs–assembled monolayer was systemically explored. As a result, more excellent SERS performance could be obtained by assembling Au NCs on the filter paper. Besides, the influence of Au NCs' size on SERS-enhanced effect of paper-based substrate was also investigated. Our results clearly indicated that paper-based substrate with 39 nm Au NCs possessed the optimal SERS enhancement. This SERS substrate exhibited high sensitivity with enhancement factor (EF) up to 9.75 × 10 7 and demonstrated good uniformity and time stability. Furthermore, based on this superior paper-based SERS substrate with advantage of powerful sample extraction performance, the measurement of crystal violet (CV) on shell surface were successfully carried out with detection limit down to 2.17 × 10 −7 M. And linear quantification were achieved in the range from 5 × 10 −5 to 5 × 10 −7 M. To sum up, the as-prepared SERS substrate is applicable for on-site detection and analysis of CV on various shell surfaces.
