Waste napkin biochar with high-performance designed for antibiotic rapidly removal

Yiping Jin,Zhongwen Zhou,Siji Chen,Chunjie Tian,Guang Chen

In this work, domestic refuse waste napkin (WN) was used as raw material, modified by different dyes and prepared to N-doped biochars via carbonation and activation methods. The results showed that the addition of dyes not only optimized the physicochemical properties of biochars, but also greatly improved the adsorption performances. The specific surface areas of N-doped biochars (BWN-CR, BWN-CV, and BWN-MO) were increased by 5.95–26.6 % compared with that of undoped biochar (BWN, 2173.13 m 2 /g), similarly, the content of nitrogen atoms in the modified biochars increased by 0.50–2.03 times. In the adsorption experiments using tetracycline hydrochloride as adsorption model, the adsorption capacities of all N-doped biochars (938.71–1159.05 mg/g) were greater than that of most adsorbents including BWN (861.33 mg/g). After 10 cycles of use, both all of the biochars can still maintain more than 65 % of the performance, indicating their stable regeneration ability. This work not only prepared a series of biochars that can be used to efficiently remove antibiotics from water, but more importantly provided a new strategy for the high-value utilization of WN and further released the application potential of secondary resources.

Hierarchical porous carbon materials derived from a waste paper towel with ultrafast and ultrahigh performance for adsorption of tetracycline

Atian Xie,Jiangdong Dai,Xiang Chen,Jinsong He,Zhongshuai Chang,Yongsheng Yan,Chunxiang Li

Herein, waste paper towels, a mass garbage product from daily life, were used as precursors for the production of hierarchical porous carbon (PTHPC) via KOH activation to be used for the removal of tetracycline. In this study, the influence of KOH content on porosity and adsorption capacity was investigated, and the optimal property of hierarchical porous carbon was obtained at weight ratios of carbonization: KOH = 1 : 4 (PTHPC-4). The physico-chemical properties of PTHPC-4 were characterized by different technology. Notably, PTHPC-4 possesses an ultrahigh specific surface area of 3524 m2 g−1 and a large pore volume of 1.839 cm3 g−1. Additionally, the isothermal adsorption results showed that PTHPC-4 displayed an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 1661.13 mg g−1 for tetracycline, which is superior to other previously reported adsorbents. Moreover, PTHPC-4 also has excellent kinetics performance: when C0 = 100 mg L−1, the pseudo-second-order kinetics constant k2 values at 298, 308 and 318 K are 1.055 × 10−2, 5.731 × 10−2 and 8.916 × 10−2 g mg−1 min−1, respectively, which were 1–3 magnitude higher than previously reported adsorbents. In addition, the investigation of the effect temperature, pH and ionic strength on the adsorption property for tetracycline are included in this study.

A low cost paper tissue-based PDMS/SiO2 composite for both high efficient oil absorption and water-in-oil emulsion separation

Jiawei Sun,Hengchang Bi,Haiyang Jia,Shi Su,Hui Dong,Xiao Xie,Litao Sun

The pollution of water resource and shortage of clean water have become increasingly severe, developing an urgent demand of reliable, efficient yet low-cost material for everyday water purification . In the present work, a superhydrophobic paper tissue-based SiO 2 /PDMS composite has been prepared for both oil absorption and water-in-oil emulsion separation. The fabrication process is quite simple since it takes the full advantage of tissue that has naturally strong capillary force of which allows the material to absorb oil from water much more rapidly and completely (>99.9%) even under harsh conditions. The study has shown the novel material is exceptionally efficient in separating water-in-oil emulsion under gravity but no need of extraneous pressure. A variety of emulsions has been proven with high flux (>2,000 L m −2 h −1 ) and high separation efficiency (>99.4%). It is believed that this study has proposed a highly reliable and efficient, low cost strategy in both oil absorption and water purification , which shed light on water treatment of both civil use and industry.

Enhanced flexibility of high-yield bamboo pulp fibers via cellulase immobilization within guar gum/polyacrylamide/polydopamine interpenetrating network hydrogels

Mengxin Hu,Hao Zhang,Jian Yang,Bin Lu,Haibing Cao,Zhengbai Cheng,Xiaofeng Lyu,Hongbin Liu,Xingye An

Softness is a crucial criterion in assessing the comfort and usability of tissue paper. Flexible fibers contribute to the softness of the tissue paper by allowing the sheets to conform to the contours of the skin without feeling rough or abrasive. This study focuses on developing innovative CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels with interpenetrating networks consisting of cationic guar gum, anionic polyacrylamide, and polydopamine for cellulase immobilization, aimed at improving bamboo fiber flexibility. Cellulase biomolecules are efficiently immobilized on CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels through the Schiff base reaction. Immobilized cellulases have a wider pH applicability than free cellulases, good storage stability, and can maintain high relative activity at relatively high temperatures. The treatment of bamboo fibers with immobilized cellulase results in a significant increase in flexibility, reaching 6.90 × 10 14  N·m 2 , which is 7.18 times higher than that of untreated fibers. The immobilization of cellulases using CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels as carriers results in a substantial enhancement of storage stability, pH applicability, and inter-fiber bonding strength, as well as the capacity to sustain high relative enzymatic activity at elevated temperatures. The immobilization of cellulase within CGG/APAM/PDA interpenetrating network hydrogels presents a viable strategy for enhancing bamboo fiber flexibility, thereby expanding the accessibility of tissue products.

Polydopamine modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for efficient cellulase immobilization towards advanced bamboo fiber flexibility and tissue softness

Tong Qin,Liqin Liu,Haibing Cao,Bin Lu,Shuangxi Nie,Zhengbai Cheng,Xiaohong Zhang,Hongbin Liu,Xingye An

Herein, a green facile approach to improve the flexibility of unbleached bamboo kraft pulp (UBKP) via an immobilized enzyme technology is proposed. Polydopamine (PDA) acts as versatile modification and coating materials of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for assembling versatile bio-carriers (PDA@CNC). Cellulase biomacromolecules are efficiently immobilized on PDA@CNC to form cellulase@PDA@CNC nanocomposites. The relative enzyme activity , temperature/pH tolerance, and storage stability of cellulase were significantly improved after immobilization. The degree of polymerization treated UBKP decreased by 5.42 % (25 U/g pulp) compared to the control sample. The flexibility of treated fibers was 6.61 × 10 14 /(N·m 2 ), which was 96.93 % higher (25 U/g) compared to the control and 3.88 times higher than that of the blank fibers. Cellulase@PDA@CNC performs excellent accessibility to fiber structure and induces high degree of fibrillation and hydrolysis of UBKP fibers, which contributes high softness of obtained tissue handsheets. The bio-carrier PDA@CNC within paper framework may further enhance tissue tensile strength . This study proposes a practical and environmentally friendly immobilization approach of cellulase@PDA@CNC for improving the hydrolysis efficiency and flexibility of UBKP fibers, which provides the possibility to maintain the strength of tissue paper while improving its softness, thus broadening the high-value application of immobilized enzyme technology in tissue production.
