Chlorine dioxide is widely used for pulp bleaching because of its high delignification selectivity. However, efficient and clean chlorine dioxide bleaching is limited by the complexity of the lignin structure. Herein, the oxidation reactions of phenolic (vanillyl alcohol) and non-phenolic (veratryl alcohol) lignin model species were modulated using chlorine dioxide. The effects of chlorine dioxide concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the consumption rate of the model species were also investigated. The optimal consumption rate for the phenolic species was obtained at a chlorine dioxide concentration of 30 mmol·L−1, a reaction temperature of 40 °C, and a reaction time of 10 min, resulting in the consumption of 96.3% of vanillyl alcohol. Its consumption remained essentially unchanged compared with that of traditional chlorine dioxide oxidation. However, the consumption rate of veratryl alcohol was significantly reduced from 78.0% to 17.3%. Additionally, the production of chlorobenzene via the chlorine dioxide oxidation of veratryl alcohol was inhibited. The structural changes in lignin before and after different treatments were analyzed. The overall structure of lignin remained stable during the optimization of the chlorine dioxide oxidation treatment. The signal intensities of several phenolic units were reduced. The effects of the selective oxidation of lignin by chlorine dioxide on the pulp properties were analyzed. Pulp viscosity significantly increased owing to the preferential oxidation of phenolic lignin by chlorine dioxide. The pollution load of bleached effluent was considerably reduced at similar pulp brightness levels. This study provides a new approach to chlorine dioxide bleaching. An efficient and clean bleaching process of the pulp was developed. Keywords:lignin;chlorine dioxide;oxidation;bleaching;pulp

In this paper, the effect of D 0 temperature, Kappa factor and the final pH value on bleaching sulfate bleached pine wood pulp was studied. The results showed that the bleaching efficiency was better when the pH value was 4, and the amount of absorbable organic halogen (AOX) in the bleaching wastewater was decreased. The Kappa factor is linear with the whiteness in the range of 0–0.15. With the increase of the Kappa factor, the amount of AOX in bleaching wastewater of D 0 and Ep gradually increases. High temperature bleaching can reduce AOX production, but some fibers are hydrolyzed, leading to a decrease in pulp viscosity. The effects of chlorine dioxide solution adding sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH 2 PO 4 ) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on pulp bleaching were investigated. The results showed that both solutions could reduce the amount of AOX in bleaching wastewater. Among them, the addition of NaH 2 PO 4 in chlorine dioxide increased pulp whiteness, while the addition of DMSO was the opposite. Scanning electron microscope showed that a small amount of hollow cracks and more voids appeared on the surface of pulp fibers after the addition of NaH 2 PO 4 . Pulp fibers bleached by the chlorine dioxide adding DMSO have more folds and less voids on the surface. The surface wrinkles of pulp fibers increased with the addition of DMSO and the voids were less. FT-IR showed that the number of chromophore groups in the pulp bleached by chlorine dioxide adding NaH 2 PO 4 were decreased. However, the lignin characteristic absorption peak in the pulp bleached by chlorine dioxide adding DMSO increased at the intensity of 1062 and 1160 cm −1 , which indicated that there were more residual chromophore groups.

Chitosan was commonly used with inorganic salt and organic compounds to prepare adsorption material for water treatment . Different materials were mixed for the preparation, leading to a high cost for water treatment. Sludge from papermaking has abundant fiber and inorganic salt, which can reduce the addition of raw materials in preparing the adsorption material and thus lower the cost. This work used recycled industrial paper sludge to prepare adsorption material to remove heavy metals from wastewater. The adsorption properties of the prepared sludge-chitosan material for Cu 2+ and Cr 3+ in wastewater were investigated. The impacts of adsorption time, pH, and initial concentrations of Cu 2+ and Cr 3+ on adsorption amount were studied and optimized. The saturated adsorption capacity of sludge-chitosan material for Cu 2+ and Cr 3+ can reach 114.6 and 110.3 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics satisfied the pseudo-second-order model, indicating two modes, physical diffusion, and chem-sorption, in the heavy metal adsorption by the sludge-chitosan materials. Physical distribution has little Effect on chemical adsorption. The materials can be applied to treating Cu 2+ and Cr 3+ containing wastewater with the proposed cheap and readily available sludge-chitosan material. The results confirmed that sludge-chitosan material possessed good regeneration performance and was an ideal adsorbent.

Kraft lignin (KL), a major by-product of the pulp and paper industry, has garnered significant research attention due to its abundant availability and distinctive chemical structure, making it a promising candidate for applications such as biofuels, carbon materials, and polymer composites. Despite these advantages, its utilization in fine chemical industries, including nanomaterials, is constrained by its inherent dark color and broad molecular weight distribution. Addressing these limitations has become a central focus in ongoing research efforts aimed at enhancing the functionality and commercial viability of KL. In this study, we fractionated KL from a paper-making enterprise using pH fractionation, and obtained four kinds of lignin with different molecular weights. Following that, lignin microspheres (LMPs) were formed by self-assembly from four sizes of KL. Analyzing the KL and LMP properties, the low molecular weight lignin, such as KL-2, exhibited good antioxidant properties (84.27 %, 5 mg/mL), high brightness (ISO% = 7.6), high L ⁎ value (L ⁎ = 86.2) and low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.19). The LMP showed a narrow size distribution (1.0–1.4 μm). When the LMP content is 5 %, the 5 % LMP/PVA film maintains high transparency and exhibits excellent UV protection, achieving a UV shielding rate of up to 94.6 %. Therefore, this study offered an effective way for the comprehensive utilization of pulping waste KL.

Graphene paper with good mechanical strength, flexibility, and high conductivity is an emerging functional material for wide applications, but its feasible and scalable preparation remains a challenge. Herein, a high strength, flexible, and conductive graphene/polypropylene (PP) fiber paper was prepared by a traditional papermaking process. In the composite paper, graphene nanosheets were well stabilized on the PP fibers forming a stable three-dimensional conductive interleaved network. Chitosan was found able to build a polar active interface on PP fibers and graphene nanosheets, which can not only promote PP fiber dispersion in water yielding a uniform pulp, but also favor the retention of graphene in the composite paper. As a result, the composite paper presents high strength (15.32 MPa), good conductivity (11,995 S/m), shielding effectiveness (31.1 dB), water resistance, fungi-proof, and thermal conductivity (10.17 W m −1 k −1 ) properties. This work demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale preparation of graphene composite paper with commercial synthetic fibers through a traditional papermaking process, and expands the potential industrial application of graphene materials. Graphical abstract Graphene/chitosan co-aggregates were absorbed on the surface of graphene/chitosan/PP fiber under the electrostatic interaction of CPAM to form graphene/PP fiber.

Large-scale use of petroleum-based plastic foams has caused serious environmental problems. Biodegradable and renewable plant resources have become ideal alternative materials. However, the inherent low mechanical strength and flammability of plant-based foams have prevented their widespread use. In this paper, pulp foams (PUPs) were prepared by cross-linking pulp fibers with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in a novel and simple method. The resulting foam exhibits ultralow density (12.4 mg cm −3 ), good mechanical properties, high flame retardancy, and recyclable, degradable performance. In the compression experiment, the compressive strength of PUP (15%) foam increased by 175% at 80% strain. Besides, PUP (15%) retains its woven structure well after vertical and horizontal combustion tests. It is expected that this work will provide new insights into the production of flame-retardant foams, which have a high potential to replace flammable and non-degradable petroleum-based foams. In response to deal with the increasingly serious environmental problems and shortage of fiber raw materials, biological enzyme pretreatment is an effective way to replace a large number of chemical additives to improve the properties of waste paper fibers. Fiber characterization of old corrugated container bleached pulp with laccase and glycine (Lac/Gly) pretreatment was investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), headspace gas chromatography (HSGC), fiber quality measurements (FQA), X-ray diffraction method (XRD), and atomic force microscope (AFM). Results showed that, compared with the control pulp, the whiteness and brightness of the Lac/Gly-treated pulp increased by 16.17% and 7.41%, respectively. And the FTIR showed that Lac/Gly pretreatment promotes the effective removal of lignin by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) bleaching. The content of carboxyl groups in pulp increased remarkably by 21.92%. The paper physical analysis showed that the paper strength properties have improved remarkably. The fiber quality analyses indicated that the fiber length, coarseness, and curl index changed a little. The XRD analysis showed that the crystallinity decreased by 5.83% due to Lac/Gly treatment. The AFM analysis showed that through Lac/Gly treatment, the lignin and extracts over the fiber surface are decreased significantly.

MOF-199 is considered to be an excellent CO 2 adsorbent owing to its substantial specific surface area, suitable pore structure and abundant sorption sites. However, powdered MOF-199 is prone to agglomeration and has poor recyclability. Herein, we proposed a MOF-199-based adsorbent by combining the MOF synthesis process with traditional papermaking process. Through such a design, MOF-199 particles are adhered on the surface of wood pulp fiber. The sufficient hydroxyl groups and electrostatic forces of cellulose facilitates the homogeneous and tight adhesion of MOF crystals. The optimal MP-4 sample demonstrated a high CO 2 adsorption capacity (1.80 mmol·g ‐−1 at 25 °C) and good CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (30.06). Moreover, the composite sorbent can be easily regenerated. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by the density functional theory approach. The simulation results showed that the carboxyl functional groups with a large number of oxygen atoms and active metal sites are the key to boost the CO 2 adsorption performance.

In this paper, the novel morphology of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with a unique tree-branched structure was discovered by using acid hydrolysis assisted with pre-disintegration treatment from wood pulps. For comparison, the pulps derived from both softwood and hardwood were utilized to extract nanocellulose in order to validate the feasibility of proposed material fabrication technique. The morphology, crystalline structures, chemical structures, and thermal stability of nanocellulose were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Prior to acid hydrolysis, softwood and hardwood pulps underwent the disintegration treatment in the fiber dissociator. It has been found that nanocellulose derived from disintegrated pulps possesses much longer fiber length (approximately 5–6 μm) and more evident tree-branched structures along with lower degree of crystallinity when compared with those untreated counterparts. The maximum mass loss rate of CNFs takes place at the temperature level of approximately 225 °C, and appears to be higher than that of cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs), which might be attributed to an induced impact of amorphous content. On the other hand, disintegration treatment is quite beneficial to the enhancement of tensile strength of nanocellulose films. This study elaborates a new route of material fabrication toward the development of well-tailored tree-branched CNFs in order to broaden the potential widespread applications of nanocellulose with diverse morphological structures.Keywords:nanocellulose;tree-branched cellulose nanofibers (CNFs);acid hydrolysis;wood pulps;disintegration treatment

CaCO 3 /CaO thermochemical energy storage based on concentrated solar power plant is a promising technology because of its high working temperature and energy storage capacity. Papermaking white mud (PWM) from paper mill is a potential CaO-based precursor due to its high content of CaCO 3 . Herein, a novel Ca 3 B 2 O 6 -modified PWM was synthesized to examine its thermochemical energy storage performance. The influences of the types and dopant amounts of B 2 O 3 precursors on the energy storage capacity of Ca 3 B 2 O 6 -modified PWM were discussed. The stable Ca 3 B 2 O 6 -modified PWM with the mass ratio of CaO to Ca 3 B 2 O 6 = 88:12 exhibits superior energy storage performance and heat transfer property during CaCO 3 /CaO cycles. The effective conversion and energy storage capacity of Ca 3 B 2 O 6 -modified PWM are approximately 0.67 and 2129.6 kJ/kg at 31st cycle, respectively, which are 2.48 and 1.76 times as high as those of PWM and pure CaCO 3 , respectively. The introduction of Ca 3 B 2 O 6 improves the sintering resistance and thermal conductivity of PWM, resulting in higher cyclic stability and lower decomposition temperature of CaCO 3 . Ca 3 B 2 O 6 enhances the basicity and improves the strong basic sites of PWM, which is beneficial for the adsorption of CO 2 , leading to greater CO 2 adsorption capacity. Moreover, Ca 3 B 2 O 6 increases the oxygen vacancy concentration of PWM, which is conducive to the diffusion of O 2– and production of CO 3 2– , further improving energy storage capacity. Hence, Ca 3 B 2 O 6 -modified PWM seems to be a suitable energy storage material for the CaCO 3 /CaO process.

Developing efficient and cheap electrocatalysts as substitutes for commercial Pt/C in the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)is extremely necessary. Herein, paper mill sludge (PMS) was utilized to produce iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanotube/nanoporous carbon nanocomposite (PMS-CNT/C) by pyrolysis . PMS-CNT/C-b, one of as-prepared PMS-CNT/C exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity with an onset potential of 0.99 V vs. RHE and half-wave potential of 0.77 V vs. RHE, which was similar to the commercial Pt/C catalyst (onset potential of 0.99 V vs. RHE and half-wave potential of 0.76 V vs. RHE). It had longer-term stability and higher methanol tolerance in alkaline medium than Pt/C. Moreover, the new catalyst also exhibited excellent catalytic performance in neutral solution. The energy output of microbial fuel cells loaded with PMS-CNT/C-b catalyst was also higher than that of commercial Pt/C under neutral condition. The excellent ORR performance of PMS-CNT/C-b was due to the carbon nanotube/nanoporous structure and the synergistic effect of abundant N groups, iron nitrides and thiophene-S. The formation of CNTs in the carbon nanotube/nanoporous carbon nanocomposite was mainly attributed to melamine , which was added into PMS and was at first just considered as a nitrogen source to develop N-doped PMS-based catalysis in this work. The synthesis of paper mill sludge-based carbon nanotube/nanoporous nanocomposite and its excellent ORR activity will make the new catalyst a promising cathodic electrocatalyst alternative for fuel cells.

Spherical mesoporous TiO 2 particles were prepared by a facile hydrothermal treatment using titanium oxysulfate (TiOSO 4 ) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the structure-directing agent. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared TiO 2 particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , field emission scanning electron microscopy , dynamic light scattering , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The results indicate that the as-synthesized TiO 2 particles have spherical mesoporous structures. Moreover, the crystal phase of the particles was the only anatase structure. This finding was attributed to the presence of sulfate ion (SO 4 2 − ), which inhibited the anatase–rutile phase transformation and improved the crystallinity of TiO 2 during TiOSO 4 hydrolysis. The spherical mesoporous TiO 2 materials have very high surface areas, and the mesopores have narrow pore size distributions . In the degradation of papermaking wastewater under ultraviolet light irradiation , the prepared TiO 2 particles exhibited high photocatalytic activity compared with the commercial Degussa P25. The effects of various parameters such as catalyst dosage, solution pH, and irradiation time on the photocatalytic activity of the fabricated TiO 2 powders are discussed. At the optimum dose of 1.0 g L − 1 TiO 2 at pH 4, the particles prepared using an SDS:TiOSO 4 molar ratio of 0.6 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving 83.6% COD Cr removal rate in 12 h and 100% chroma removal rate in 8 h.
