Textile dyeing sludge (TDS) is a typical industrial solid waste whose amount surged with the textile industry's development. Pyrolysis treatment is a promising technique for TDS to realize harmless disposal and resource reuse. However, the high content of organic compounds would cause sulfurous pollutants emission, reducing the economic feasibility during pyrolysis. This study aimed to fill the knowledge gaps about the thermal behavior, products distribution, kinetics, and sulfur transformation during TDS pyrolysis in 350–575 ℃ with the heating rate of 60, 600, and 6000 ℃/min, then investigate the sulfur fixation effect of CaO under representative conditions (350 ℃, 650 ℃ with 60 ℃/min, 6000 ℃/min). The primary decomposition stage of TDS is observed in 127–557 ℃, following the Avrami-Erofeev (n = 3) model, while the activation energy presents a convergent tendency with the increased heating rate. The pyrolysis temperature and heating rates impact the cracking of organic compounds, while a weakening effect is found for the sulfur distribution. CaO addition could efficiently realize sulfur fixation in char by absorbing sulfurous gas products, but SO 2 escape appeared with the increased CaO fraction. Pyrolysis condition at 650 ℃-60 ℃/min with 10 wt% CaO addition is recommended to achieve high sulfur retention, and the sulfur transformation mechanism in char during the TDS pyrolysis with and without CaO is proposed. Our findings provide novel and fundamental insights into the efficient disposal and pollution control during TDS pyrolysis.

In this paper, a novel strategy integrating ultrasound (US) with a Fenton-like (zero-valent iron/EDTA/air, ZEA) process was proposed for the removal of the refractory and carcinogenic aromatic amines (AAs) in textile dyeing sludge for the first time. The operating condition was optimized as 1.08 W/cm 3 ultrasonic density, 15 g/L ZVI, and 1.0 mM EDTA, which could reach degradation efficiencies of 51.79% in US, 72.88% in ZEA, and 92.40% in US/ZEA system after 90-min reaction. Quenching experiments showed that electron transfer reactions generated by the iron ligands in ZEA brought about various reactive oxidative species (ROS), in which Fe (IV), O 2 ˙ − , and ˙OH dominated the degradation. US induced sludge disintegration by ultrasonic shear, proven by particle size decrease and supernatant organic matter upsurge, which helps ROS contact with those pollutants in the sludge cavities. Besides, US facilitated the iron redox cycle for oxygen activation by promoting the corrosion of ZVI and stripping considerable ferric ions from sludge iron oxides which were verified by SEM, XRF, and XPS.

The existence of heavy metal in texting and dyeing sludge is one of the potential ecological pollutions. In this study, a series of modified kaolin was applied to co-pyrolysis with DS. The biochar characterization and heavy metal analysis reveal the effects of modified additives on the heavy metal behavior and potential mechanisms. Compared to raw texting and dyeing sludge, the total content of Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn, and Ni increased to a maximum value of 170.63, 451.85, 147.86, 731.69, and 57.91 mg/kg in biochar. The proportion of Cu, Zn, Mn, and Ni in stable fractions increased to 99.23 %, 88.71 %, 53.89 %, and 94.04 %, and the potential ecological risk index of biochar experienced a substantial reduction from 154.45 in DS to 11.18 in DAK. Co-pyrolysis and dilution effects synergistically reduced the leaching of heavy metals and promoted their enrichment in biochar. The Al/Si structural phase transition, pore structure, functional groups, and interactions between inorganic mineral components and heavy metals also were affected by acid-base modification. This resulted in the enhancement of heavy metal stabilization fractions and the reduction of environmental risks. This study aims to present an eco-friendly and efficient strategy to further mitigate the environmental risks associated with HMs in hazardous wastes. In addition, it also provides ideas for the application of modified mineral additives in the field of pollutant control.

To develop an effective method to remove the toxic and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CPAHs) from textile dyeing sludge, five CPAHs were selected to investigate the degradation efficiencies using ultrasound combined with Fenton process (US/Fenton). The results showed that the synergistic effect of the US/Fenton process on the degradation of CPAHs in textile dyeing sludge was significant with the synergy degree of 30.4. During the US/Fenton process, low ultrasonic density showed significant advantage in degrading the CPAHs in textile dyeing sludge. Key reaction parameters on CPAHs degradation were optimized by the central composite design as followed: H 2 O 2 concentration of 152 mmol/L, ultrasonic density of 408 W/L, pH value of 3.7, the molar ratio of H 2 O 2 to Fe 2+ of 1.3 and reaction time of 43 min. Under the optimal conditions of the US/Fenton process, the degradation efficiencies of five CPAHs were obtained as 81.23% (benzo[a]pyrene) to 84.98% (benz[a]anthracene), and the benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaP eq ) concentrations of five CPAHs declined by 81.22–85.19%, which indicated the high potency of US/Fenton process for removing toxic CPAHs from textile dyeing sludge.

To establish an efficient oxidation process for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in textile dyeing sludge, the effects of various operating parameters were optimized during the ultrasound process, Fenton process and the combined ultrasound–Fenton process. The results showed that the ultrasonic density of 1.80 w/cm 3 , both H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ dosages of 140 mmol/L and pH 3 were favorable conditions for the degradation of PAHs. The degradation efficiency of high molecular weight PAHs was close to or even higher than that of light molecular weight PAHs. The highest degradation efficiencies of Σ16 PAHs were obtained within 30 min in the order of: Fenton (83.5%) >ultrasound–Fenton (75.5%) >ultrasound (45.5%), then the efficiencies were decreased in the other of: ultrasound–Fenton (73.0%) >Fenton (70.3%) >ultrasound (41.4%) in 60 min. The extra PAHs were released from the intracellular substances and the cavities of sludge due to the disruption of sludge during the oxidation process. Also, the degradation of PAHs could be inhibited by the other organic matter in the sludge. The combined ultrasound–Fenton process showed more efficient than both ultrasound process and Fenton process not only in the surface of sludge but also in the sludge interior.

To relieve the secondary contamination of heavy metals (HMs), the synergistic effect of co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge (DS)/litchi shell (LS) and CaO on the migration of HMs was demonstrated in this study. The proportions of Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn, and Ni in the F4 fraction increased to 75%, 55%, 100%, 50%, and 62% at the suitable CaO dosages. When 10% CaO was added, the RI value of DLC-10% was reduced to 7.89, indicating low environmental risk. The characterizations of the physicochemical properties of biochar provided support for the HMs immobilization mechanism. HMs combined with inorganic minerals or functional groups to form new stable HMs crystalline minerals and complexes to achieve immobilization of HMs. The pH value and pore structure also play an important role in improving the immobilization performance of HMs. In conclusion, the results provided a new direction for the subsequent harmless treatment of HMs-enriched waste.

Microwave co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge (TS) and furfural residue (FR) was investigated in this study. Comprehensive pyrolysis index (CPI) was employed to investigate pyrolysis performance and FR addition significantly improved co-pyrolysis. Product distribution showed that increasing FR ratio enhanced the bio-oil and gas with significant reduction in biochar. For bio-oil, FR addition neutralized the strong alkalinity and inhibited the formation of nitrogen compounds. Moreover, bio-oil maintained a very low oxygenates content (0.97–5.97%). For biochar, co-pyrolysis was favorable for the enrichment of C and H and mitigated the potential contamination. FR addition increased the calorific value and contributed to pore development of biochar. Online inspection displayed that co-pyrolysis drastically restrained the release of sulfur-compounds and nitrogenates in volatile, while enhanced the production of alkanes, aldehydes, and ketones. Moreover, the interaction between TS and FR was influenced by their major components. For heavy metals (HMs), Er was at low risk for most HMs and FR addition ratios of 40 and 80 wt% appeared to be more favorable. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that FR addition changed the decomposition behavior and affected co-pyrolysis process. This study also evaluated the co-pyrolysis synergistic mechanisms of TS and FR. Overall, microwave co-pyrolysis is a novel and effective method to reduce environmental pollution and produce high-quality products, providing new insights for the low consumption and efficient utilization of industrial solid waste.

This paper proposes a combined ultrasound (US) and zero-valent iron/EDTA/Air (ZEA) system to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from textile dyeing sludge . The removal efficiencies of 16 PAHs using ZEA, US/Air (air injected into the US process), and US/ZEA treatments were investigated, together with the effects of various operating parameters. The enhanced mechanisms of US and the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in removing PAHs in the US/ZEA system were explored. Results showed that only 42.5% and 32.9% of ∑16 PAHs were removed by ZEA and US/Air treatments respectively, whereas 70.1% were removed by US/ZEA treatment, (with favorable operating conditions of 2.0 mM EDTA, 15 g/L ZVI, and 1.08 w/cm 3 ultrasonic density). The US/ZEA system could be used with a wide pH range. US led to synergistic improvement of PAHs removal in the ZEA system by enhancing sludge disintegration to release PAHs and promoting ZVI corrosion and oxygen activation. In the US/ZEA system, PAHs could be degraded by ROS (namely OH, O 2 − /HO 2 , and Fe(IV)) and adsorbed by ZVI, during which the ROS made the predominant contribution. This study provides important insights into the application of a US/ZEA system to remove PAHs from sludge.

It is urgent to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from textile dyeing sludge (TDS) before its final deposal due to their recalcitrant nature and generation of toxic byproducts during TDS treatment . In this study, an electrochemical Fe 2+ -activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation process for removing 16 priority PAHs from real TDS was firstly investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of the ∑16PAHs in TDS was positively correlated to the concentration of Fe 2+ released from sacrificial iron anode and the concentration of electroregenerated Fe 2+ in the cathode by the reduction of Fe 3+ within the applied voltage range of 3–7 V, but a higher voltage of 10 V did not lead to further improvement in ∑16PAHs removal due to the radical scavenging reaction resulted from the excessive accumulation of Fe 2+ . 64.7% and 16.1% of the ∑16PAHs were removed in the anodic and cathodic chamber under the optimum reaction conditions of 400 mg/g PMS/VSS, pH 3 and applied voltage 7 V, respectively. low-ring PAHs were preferentially degraded compared to high-ring PAHs. The O ⋅ H played a major role while SO 4 ⋅ — had a minor role in PAHs degradation in TDS. The intracellular PAHs released from cracked sludge cells were found to undergo further degradation under free radical attack.

The degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in textile dyeing sludge by O3/H2O2 treatment was investigated. Fluorene (Fl), phenanthrene (Ph), anthracene (An) and dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBA) were selected to represent typical PAHs. The effect of radical inhibitors, H2O2, O3 flow rate, pH and reaction time on the degradation of the four types of PAHs were examined to determine the optimal conditions for degradation and to clarify the mechanism(s) of PAHs degradation. The results indicated that the combined O3/H2O2 treatment resulted in high removal rates of the selected PAHs: 89% for Fl, 66% for Ph, 71% for An and 81% for DBA. These results correspond to the optimal conditions of an O3 flow rate of 0.4 L min−1, a H2O2 concentration of 0.60 mol L−1, a reaction time of 15 min and pH 7. The removal rate (within 30 min) increased by 5% for Fl, 27% for Ph, 21% for An and 5% for DBA through the addition of H2O2 to the O3 process. The O3 flow rate, reaction time and pH were the key parameters affecting PAH degradation with multiple interacting factors (p < 0.05) by the O3/H2O2 treatment. The degradation of the PAHs can be fitted well by pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9656). The combined O3/H2O2 treatment is demonstrated to be an efficient approach for the degradation of PAHs in textile dyeing sludge.
