Intrinsic linear polarized optics discovered in anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted intense interest for polarization-sensitive optical and optoelectronic applications , such as black phosphorous, ReSe 2 , etc. However, the lack of matured method to synthesize high-quality, large-scale and air-stable 2D materials with anisotropic properties, is still an obstacle for practical applications. Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), which exhibits strong direct-band-gap light-harvesting properties, can be grown maturely. But unfortunately, MoS 2 does not show linear dichroism owing to its in-plane isotropic crystalline symmetry. We, herein, for the first time, report on an artificial control of extrinsic linear polarized photoelectric effect in monolayer MoS 2 , by successfully controlling its anisotropic degree of in-plane crystal symmetry via artificially induced uniaxial tensile strain . Strong linear polarization-sensitive photodetection from visible to near-infrared range is realized for monolayer MoS 2 -based device, and the polarization anisotropic ratio can reach up over 2.0 under 4.5% strain. The observation is supported by combination of experiment-theory study on polarized Raman spectrum and optical absorption under gradually applied strains. Our results have demonstrated that the artificial-controlled symmetry reducing of MoS 2 is a promising strategy to achieve high performance polarization photodetection. This method can also be extended to other 2D materials, which potentially opens up a new field to endow isotropic 2D materials with anisotropic functionalities by artificial structure engineering.

Semiconductor nanorods (NRs) offer the useful property of linearly polarized light emission. While this would be an attractive functionality for strongly emitting perovskite nanoparticles, to date, there has been limited success in demonstrating a direct chemical synthesis of cesium lead halide perovskite NRs. In this work, we realized the direct synthesis of CsPbBr3 NRs with an average width of around 5 nm and average lengths of 10.8 and 23.2 nm, respectively, in two samples, which show a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 60–76% and reasonably high emission anisotropy of about 0.2 for longer rods. Both CsPbCl3 and CsPbI3 NRs with similar dimensions have then been derived from the CsPbBr3 NRs by anion-exchange reactions. Remarkably, the synthesis of the NRs has been achieved in polar alcohols, a class of solvents not usually found to be beneficial in classical perovskite nanoparticle synthesis. This work not only offers the possibility to control the shape of chemically synthesized perovskite nanocrystals but also constitutes the hitherto less common strategy of synthesizing perovskite nanoparticles in polar rather than nonpolar or only weakly polar solvents.

In this paper, a copolymer containing photosensitive group was used as photo-alignment film through linearly polarised ultraviolet irradiation to a varying heating rate for an investigation of liquid crystal orientation. When the polymer film is exposed to linearly polarised ultraviolet, it can generate a polarisation-axis selective photoreaction. Then the thin film underwent thermally enhanced photoinduced molecular reorientation followed by subsequent annealing. Fixed exposure energy was 324 mJ cm−2 and annealing temperature was 98°C, heating rates varied from 5 to 30 S °C−1, a large anisotropy was generated. According to the method mentioned in the paper to calculate the enhanced ratio, the best heating rate is 20 S °C−1.

Achieving uniform perovskite thin films via inkjet printing remains a significant challenge due to the pervasive coffee-ring effect. Here, we present a solute engineering strategy that incorporates shape-anisotropic perovskite nanorods into a single-solvent ink formulation, effectively suppressing coffee-ring formation and yielding ultraflat films with an average roughness (Ra) as low as 0.226 nm. The anisotropic nanorod morphology modulates solute transport and deposition dynamics while also promoting the formation of directionally aligned domains. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the linearly polarized perovskite films (polarization ratio ρ = 0.3357) by inkjet printing and the corresponding prototype electroluminescent devices. Although demonstrated with perovskite nanocrystals, this shape-anisotropic solute strategy may be broadly applicable to other functional materials, offering a universal route to uniform film formation and device integration.
