The prevention of bacteria-induced infections has been increasing in importance in both clinical surgery and biomedical engineering. Although great attention has been paid to designing intelligent antibacterial surfaces, the fabrication processes are still not facile and universal enough, and the antibacterial efficiencies of these surfaces are also not ideal. Herein, ionic liquid (IL) molecules of 3-(12-mercaptododecyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide (IL(Br)) were synthesized with the minimum inhibitory concentrations as low as 4 and 8 μg mL−1 against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively. By simply immersing a polymeric substrate into the IL(Br) solution, an antibacterial surface with high killing efficiency of 99% against S. aureus (94% against E. coli) was achieved via a mussel-inspired approach. Subsequently, 97% S. aureus and 95% E. coli on the substrate could be released by simple ion-exchange of Br− with (CF3SO2)2N− due to the ion sensitivity of the IL molecular brushes. Thus, the proposed facile strategy towards a superior efficiency surface could be potentially used in intelligent antibacterial fields.

Development of biological dressings has received widespread attentions due to their good breathability, biocompatibility, wettability, and the ability to absorb wound exudate without sticking to the wound. However, current proposed antibacterial hydrogels are limited antibacterial ability, short service life and insufficient biocompatibility, which are still challenging to address intricate practical applications. Here we develop a cationic peptide-based, salt-responsive hydrogel dressing with triple functions of antifouling, bactericidal, and bacterial release by combining ε-poly- l -lysine, poly(ethylene gly co l) diglycidyl ether, and poly(DVBAPS- co -GMA) via a one-pot method. These designed hydrogels enabled to further quaternize to enhance antibacterial property due to the presence of amine residues. The resultant hydrogels present good antibacterial activity (>90%), biocompatibility, cell proliferation efficacy (~400%) and adhesiveness. Through in vivo and in vitro antibacterial capability tests, it is also found that hydrogels have good antifouling and sterilization capabilities, and the sterilization rate could reach up to ~96%. In addition, ~94% of the attached bacterial can be released after saline/water switching for several cycles. Taken together, the designed multiple antibacterial dressing prolongs the lifespan relying on reversible salt-responsive release and meet special requirements for wound healing. This work not only provides a platform to highlight its promising potentials in wound management but also gives a custom strategy to biomedical applications.

The development of effective antibacterial surfaces to prevent the attachment of pathogenic bacteria and subsequent bacterial colonization and biofilm formation is critically important for medical devices and public hygiene products. In the work reported herein, a smart antibacterial hybrid film based on tannic acid/Fe3+ ion (TA/Fe) complex and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) is deposited on diverse substrates. This surface is shown to have bacteria-killing and bacteria-releasing properties based on, respectively, near-infrared photothermal activation and subsequent cooling. The TA/Fe complex has three roles in this system: (i) as a universal adhesive “anchor” for surface modification, (ii) as a high-efficiency photothermal agent for ablation of attached bacteria (including multidrug resistant bacteria), and (iii) as a robust linker for immobilization of NH2-terminated PNIPAAm via either Michael addition or Schiff base formation. Moreover, because of the thermoresponsive properties of the immobilized PNIPAAm, almost all of the killed bacteria and other debris can be removed from the surface simply by lowering the temperature. It is shown that this hybrid film can maintain good antibacterial performance after being used for multiple “kill-and-release” cycles and can be applied to various substrates regardless of surface chemistry or topography, thus providing a broadly applicable, simple, and reliable solution to the problems associated with surface-attached bacteria in various healthcare applications.

Overuse of antibiotics can increase the risk of notorious antibiotic resistance in bacteria, which has become a growing public health concern worldwide. Featured with the merit of mechanical rupture of bacterial cells, the bioinspired nanopillars are promising alternatives to antibiotics for combating bacterial infections while avoiding antibacterial resistance. However, the resident dead bacterial cells on nanopillars may greatly impair their bactericidal capability and ultimately impede their translational potential toward long-term applications. Here, we show that the functions of bactericidal nanopillars can be significantly broadened by developing a hybrid thermoresponsive polymer@nanopillar-structured surface, which retains all of the attributes of pristine nanopillars and adds one more: releasing dead bacteria. We fabricate this surface through coaxially decorating mechano-bactericidal ZnO nanopillars with thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes. Combining the benefits of ZnO nanopillars and PNIPAAm chains, the antibacterial performances can be controllably regulated between ultrarobust mechano-bactericidal action (∼99%) and remarkable bacteria-releasing efficiency (∼98%). Notably, both the mechanical sterilization against the live bacteria and the controllable release for the pinned dead bacteria solely stem from physical actions, stimulating the exploration of intelligent structure-based bactericidal surfaces with persistent antibacterial properties without the risk of triggering drug resistance.

“Janus-featured” hydrogels with different structure and function for each layer can be particularly important in diverse application. However, very few studies have been conducted on multifunctional Janus-featured hydrogel, and significant challenge for simple, rapid, and efficient fabrication of such hydrogels remains. Herein, Janus-featured poly(N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (polyHEAA) hydrogel loaded with modified silica nanoparticle was fabricated by the supergravity method. Silica nanoparticles grafted with poly(3-(dimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl) ammonio) propyl sulfonate) (polyDVBAPS) were first prepared and then introduced into progel of polyHEAA hydrogel. During the formation of the hydrogel, a supergravity resulting from centrifugation was applied, from which silica nanoparticles moved to one side of the hydrogel, forming Janus-featured hydrogels, i.e., a pristine polyHEAA layer and a composite layer. These two layers showed different properties, where the prinstine polyHEAA layer showed excellent antifouling property by resisting the bacteria adsorption (<106 cells/cm2) for up to 5 days, and the nanoparticle-loaded hydrogel layer showed excellent bacteria-releasing properties by releasing >94% adherent bacteria upon a simple treatment with 2.0 M NaCl solution for 10 min. Based on its superb biocompatibility and low biotoxicity, we expect that our interesting strategy may provide a new assumption for the fabrication of “Janus featured” hydrogel and hopefully offer reference significance for the design of hydrogel-based wound dressing in the near future.

The adhesion and proliferation of the bacteria on biomedical surfaces have posed a great threat to patients. Developing a class of renewable bactericidal surface with excellent bacteria release capability is crucial for elongating the service life of the biomedical devices. However, releasing the bacteria fast and frequently is usually a trade-off with releasing them thoroughly and completely regenerating the surface. Herein, a temperature/light dual-responsive antimicrobial coating is developed. The cyclodextrin (CD)-contained antifouling macromolecule and the thermal-responsive azobenzene-contained macromolecule are assembled on the CDs-modified surface, combined with additional silver nanoparticles. The surface exhibits low bacteria attachments of 9.30 × 10 5 cells cm −2 ( E. coli , 120 h), high bactericidal efficiency of ≈96.3%. Meanwhile, ≈86.9% of the attached bacteria can be released from the surface rapidly in response to temperature, and the residues can be thoroughly removed by irradiating UV irradiation (release ratio ≈91.0%). The functions of the surface can be resumed by switching the host-guest network via light regulation. The 3 rd regenerated surface still maintains low bacteria density of 12.4 × 10 5 cells cm −2 , bacteria killing ratio of ≈95.0%, and bacteria release rate of ≈95.7%. The work is supposed to provide a new insight into the design of multifunctional antibacterial surface and broaden their applications.

Bacterial infections from biomedical devices pose a great threat to the health of humans and thus place a heavy burden on society. Therefore, developing efficient antibacterial surfaces has attracted much attention. However, it is a challenge to identify or develop a combination that efficiently integrates multiple functions via topological tailoring and on-demand function-switch via non-contact and noninvasive stimuli. To resolve this issue, a highly hydrophilic comb polymer brush was constructed here based on supramolecular host–guest recognition. Azobenzene (azo)-modified antifouling and antibacterial polymers were incorporated into cyclodextrin (CD)-modified antifouling polymer brushes grafted on the surface. The surface thus obtained possessed excellent antifouling performance with a low bacterial density of ∼6.25 × 105 cells per cm2 after 48 h and exhibited a high efficiency of ∼88.2% for killing bacteria. Besides, irradiation with UV light resulted in the desorption of the azo-polymers and a release of ∼85.1% attached bacteria. Irradiating visible light led to the re-adsorption of azo-polymers, which regenerated the fresh surface; the process could be repeated for at least three cycles, and the surface still maintained low bacterial attachments with a cell density of ∼7.10 × 105 cells per cm2, high sterilization efficiency of ∼93.8%, and a bacteria release rate of ∼83.1% in the 3rd cycle. The photo-switchable antibacterial surface presented in this research will provide new insights into the development of smart biomedical surfaces.

Clubroot, caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae , is one of the most important diseases of brassicas. The antagonistic bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa ZF129 can suppress clubroot while its effectiveness is often unstable. To control clubroot more effectively, the macrobeads for controlled release of ZF129 were prepared using microencapsulation technology. Macrobeads with various ratios of chitosan (2 % w/w): carrageenan (0.3 % w/v) were prepared by an ionotropic gelation method and the bacteria ZF129 was loaded into macrobeads. The 1:1 chitosan: carrageenan showed the maximum swelling ratio (634 %), and the maximum survival rate (61.52 ± 1.12 %) after freeze-drying. Fourier transform infrared revealed the electrostatic interactions between chitosan and carrageenan. The macrobeads can efficiently release ZF129 strains into phosphate buffer solution and reach equilibrium in 48 h. The maximum number of bacteria cells to be released in the soil was observed after 25–30 days. The control efficacy of ZF129 macrobeads (chitosan: carrageenan, 1:1) and ZF129 culture against clubroot disease was 76.33 ± 3.65 % and 59.76 ± 4.43 % in greenhouse experiments, respectively and the control efficacy was calculated as 60.74 ± 5.00 % for ZF129 macrobeads and 40.94 ± 4.05 % for ZF129 culture under field experiments, respectively. The ZF129 macrobeads had significant growth-promoting effects on pak choi and Chinese cabbage. The encapsulation method described in this study is a prudent approach toward efficient biopesticides utilization with reduced environmental implications.

The adhesion of bacteria to surfaces poses a significant challenge to public health and many industries, making the development of antibacterial surfaces an urgent issue. In this work, α,ω-bisthiol poly(methacrylic acid) (HS-PMAA-SH) was synthesized and grafted in loop conformation onto a substrate primed with polydopamine, in conjunction with Ag NPs prepared in-situ to create a pH responsive composite surface with synergistic fouling-resistant and bacterial killing and releasing capabilities. A monofunctional analogue of half the chain length, PMAA-SH, was also synthesized and used to construct the composite surface with the PMAA in linear conformation for comparison. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation experiments revealed that PMAA loops allowed much less protein to adsorb than their linear analogues. Confocal laser scanning microscopy results showed that both composite surfaces were effective in killing the bacteria attached due to the presence of Ag NPs, and exhibited good initial resistance to bacterial adhesion and ability to release the killed bacteria under mild conditions due to the PMAA component; the composite surface conjugated with PMAA-loop was superior to the one with PMAA-linear, presenting lower initial bacterial adhesion and higher release rates, maintaining a low bacterial coverage even after five resist/kill/release cycles. The research opens a new avenue for antibacterial surfaces that integrate fouling-resistance, bacterial killing and release functions.
