Agglomeration is an undesirable phenomenon that often occurs in spray-dried microcapsules powder. The objective of this work is to determine the best solution for spray-dried hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) microcapsules from four anticaking agents, namely calcium stearate (CaSt), magnesium stearate (MgSt), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and mannitol (MAN), and to explore their anticaking mechanisms. Our results showed that MAN was found to be the superior anticaking agent among those tested. When the MAN ratio is 12%, the microcapsules with a special Xanthium-type shape had higher powder flowability and lower hygroscopicity and exhibited good anticaking properties. Mechanism research revealed that CaSt, MgSt, and SiO2reduce hygroscopicity and caking by increasing the glass transition temperature of the microcapsules, while MAN prevents the hydroxyl group of HP-β-CD from combining with water molecules in the air by a crystal outer-layer on the microcapsule surface. Keywords:spray drying;microcapsules;mannitol;crystallisation;caking
This study aims to improve the explosion suppression performance of bicarbonate powders (KHCO₃ and NaHCO₃) against combustible dust and enhance their anti-caking properties by loading bicarbonate onto the surface of 4A zeolite. Using wet impregnation and evaporative crystallization, KHCO₃ and NaHCO₃ particles were successfully attached to the tetrahedral structure of 4A zeolite, resulting in composite dust explosion inhibitors, Zeolite-KHCO₃ and Zeolite-NaHCO₃, with large specific surface areas. The inhibition efficiencies of bicarbonate and 4A zeolite-loaded bicarbonate on wheat starch explosions were tested using a 150 cm Hartmann tube. The anti-caking properties of the composite were also evaluated under high humidity conditions. Results showed that Zeolite-KHCO₃ exhibited enhanced explosion suppression efficiency compared to KHCO₃, with a minimum complete inerting ratio (MIR) of 0.05, while Zeolite-NaHCO₃ exhibited an MIR of 0.12, consistent with NaHCO₃. The accelerated caking tests revealed that in contrast to KHCO₃ and NaHCO₃, Zeolite-KHCO₃ and Zeolite-NaHCO₃ exhibited superior anti-caking properties due to the drying effect of zeolite, with a caking rate of less than 0.1. These findings indicate that 4A zeolite-loaded bicarbonates can drastically reduce the caking tendency of bicarbonate while maintaining or enhancing its explosion suppression efficiency.
Jujube powder is of high nutritional value, but it is easy to absorb moisture and agglomerate, leading to the deterioration of jujube powder quality. Therefore, it is necessary to decrease the hygroscopicity of jujube powder. In this study, the effect of jujube kernel powder on the moisture absorption performance of jujube powder was studied by adding different contents of jujube kernel powder and measuring the moisture absorption performance at different humidity levels. The results showed that the addition of jujube kernel powder could effectively reduce the color difference change of jujube powder during moisture absorption, and reduce the hardness and stickiness of jujube powder during agglomeration. The addition of jujube kernel powder into jujube powder effectively reduced the moisture content of jujube powder, and therefore significantly decreased the caking degree of jujube powder, and the higher content of jujube kernel powder added in jujube powder, the lower the balanced dry basis moisture content of jujube powder. Such a hygroscopic behavior could be well fitted by the Peleg model, and the goodness of fit was 0.9899. Adding jujube kernel powder into jujube powder is a suitable way to positively affect the quality of jujube powder.
