The combination of phenolic and amine additives represents a traditional approach for the co-formulation of antioxidant compounds in insulating oils. However, the introduction of amines not only induces significant alterations in the inherent characteristics of the oil but also gives rise to aging by-products that are environmentally detrimental. This study examines the aging behavior of three commonly employed phenolic antioxidants, namely BHT, BHA, and TBHQ, when added individually or in combination to synthetic ester insulating oil. The investigation reveals that the co-formulation of phenolic antioxidants demonstrates exceptional antioxidant efficacy within synthetic ester insulating oil. Through the oxidative stability test, it is observed that incorporating a combination of 0.3 wt% BHT and 0.1 wt% BHA into the oil maintains the dielectric dissipation factor at 0.681%, representing a mere 0.202% increase compared to fresh oil. Furthermore, the total acid number can be sustained at 0.01 mg KOH/g, and the breakdown voltage can be up to 78 kV. This study employs linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to analyze the behavior of antioxidants and the degradation products of aged oil samples. A preliminary investigation into the synergistic antioxidant mechanism of phenolic antioxidants in synthetic ester insulating oil is conducted, to provide a novel approach for the formulation of antioxidant compounds.

Insulating oil is a pivotal component of power transformers, but it suffers from aging byproducts during service operation. The aging byproducts from the degradation of oil insulation tend to induce insulation failure, which poses a significant threat to the security of the power grid. Therefore, the regeneration of insulating oil is required to prolong the useful life of insulating oil and hence be of economic and ecological interests. Typical in-use oil regeneration routes employ multi-step procedures. In this work, a one-step regeneration method using a PVDF/BaTiO3composite membrane is proposed. BaTiO3endows the composite membrane with improved hydrophobicity and an electret state. The regeneration performance of the PVDF/BaTiO3nanofiber membrane was assessed by considering the acid value, moisture content, dielectric loss factor tan δ, and the AC breakdown voltage of the refreshed oil. The test results showed that the filtration efficiencies toward formic acid and moisture were up to 77.5% and 60.6%, respectively. Moreover, the dielectric loss factor tan δ of the refreshed oil decreased evidently at a power frequency, and the AC breakdown voltage rose from 23.7 kV to 38.9 kV. This suggests that the PVDF/BaTiO3composite membrane may be employed efficiently, and it minimizes aging byproducts via the one-step filtration. Keywords:electret;insulating oil regeneration;PVDF/BaTiO3nanofiber;electric field

Oil-paper insulated equipment is integral in power conversion and supports low-loss electricity transport. As a characteristic byproduct of the oil-paper insulation system, the realization of efficient detection of furfural in oil is crucial to the safe operation of the power grid. We proposed a novel approach using dual-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for sensing trace liquid components. This method employs a centrifugal extractor to separate and enrich the targeted components, achieving selective enhancement. The optimal phase ratio was determined to be 30:1. A liquid-core fiber was used to optimize the laser transmission efficiency and Raman signal collection efficiency, resulting in a nonselective signal enhancement of 44.86. It also investigated the impact of intermolecular interactions on the shift of Raman spectra, identifying the reasons for the differences in Raman signals between pure furfural, furfural in oil, and furfural in water. A batch of samples with furfural dissolved in insulation oil was measured using this system and achieved a limit of detection of 0.091 mg/L. The stability of the dual-enhanced Raman platform was experimentally verified with a spectral intensity fluctuation of 0.68%. This method is fast, stable, adaptable, and suitable for the detection of a wide range of liquid ingredients.

Synthetic ester insulating oil emerges as an environmentally friendly substitute for mineral insulating oil. However, the intrinsic ester structure poses challenges to its oxidation stability, making improvement necessary. This paper compares the impact of three phenolic antioxidants, specifically 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (T501), tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), and 4,4’-methylenebis (2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (T511), on improving the thermal oxidation stability of pentaerythritol ester insulating oil (KKA). The antioxidants are introduced at molar ratios of 6 μmol/g and 18 μmol/g. The thermal oxygen aging tests indicate that all three antioxidants mitigate the deterioration of KKA’s physicochemical and electrical properties to varying extents. TBHQ exhibits the most pronounced effectonenhancing KKA’s thermal stability, as evidenced by he highest extrapolated onset temperature obtained via thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) in a nitrogen atmosphere. T511 is the most influential in improving KKA’s oxidation stability, characterized by its superior onset oxidation temperature and highest capacity to elevate the initial oxidative activation energy of KKA determined through non-isothermal DSC. Furthermore, the lowest bond dissociation energy ofT511 indicates a most facilitated release of hydrogen atoms, providing additional evidence for its superior antioxidant efficiency.

Insulating oil is indispensable cooling impregnation and isolation agent for oil-filled electrical equipment, such as power transformers. The aging byproducts, i.e., water and organic acids, impose a serious threat to these expensive transformers. Insulating oil reclamation is a complicated process. In this article, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) additive composite nanofiber membrane is synthesized for insulating oil reclamation with high efficiency. The reclamation and dielectric performance of the PVDF/PTFE nanofiber membrane is evaluated by the acid value, microwater (MW) contents, and ac breakdown voltage of the treated oil. The results show that the nanofiber membrane filtration rate toward acetic acid and MW is 69.4% and 76.0%, respectively. Moreover, the dielectric loss factor and relative permittivity of treated oil decrease significantly at low frequencies, and the breakdown voltage is increased from 21.8 to 65.2 kV. The PVDF/PTFE composite nanofiber membrane has removed organic acid and MW effectively, and it provides a more practical method for insulating oil reclamation.

The trimethylolpropane esters (TME) based high performance electrical insulating oil was synthesized by esterification of the mixture of C 6 , C 8 and C 10 acids blend with trimethylolpropane (TMP). The conversion yields of TME is maximized at catalyst (SnCl 2 ) dosage of 0.8 wt.% and the TMP:acid molar ratio of 3.2:1 at 140 °C. The electrical performance is significantly improved by a purpose-oriented purification process which is structured by washing with ultrapure water and absorption with molecular sieve. The obtained insulating oil shows much reduced viscosity (23.3 mm 2 s −1 ) and much enhanced AC breakdown voltage (72.6 kV) comparing with the commercial natural ester insulating oil FR3® (34 mm 2 s −1 and 63 kV). The high performance of the insulating oil is also manifested by quite low pour point (−45 °C) and high flash point (248 °C) which are superior to those values of mineral insulating oil (−30 °C and 170 °C). The remarkable oxidation stability of the insulating oil is metered by the oxidation induction time (OIT) 2275 min at 130 °C which should be attributed to the elimination of C C double bonds and β-H atoms.

Nanoparticles are presently considered to be high-potential additives in insulation materials. Surface modifiers can not only improve the compatibility between nanoparticles and natural ester but also enhance the insulation performance of the insulation liquid. In this work, a mixture of two natural ester insulation oils (rapeseed oil + palm fatty acid ester) doped with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550)-TiO2 nanoparticles was prepared, and a 56-day thermal aging experiment was implemented. Moreover, the molecular dynamics simulation was applied to investigate the improvement mechanism of the physicochemical and electrical properties from a microscopic perspective. The experimental results revealed that KH550-modified nano-TiO2 particles could reduce the generation of microwater and acidic substances during the aging process of the oil–paper insulation system, retard the degradation of the system, and improve the thermal stability and insulation performance. At the end of the thermal aging, a decrease of breakdown voltage by 7.3% and an increase of acid value by 17.3% were observed in the modified insulation oil. On the contrary, the pure insulation oil decreased the breakdown voltage by 26.96%, and the acid value increased by 28.38%. Furthermore, the molecular simulation results determined that KH550-TiO2 could combine with polar molecules through hydrogen bonds, adsorb polar molecules in insulation oil, prevent their diffusion into cellulose insulation paper, and delay the aging and decomposition of insulation paper. Therefore, the modified nanoparticles have remarkably enhanced the antithermal aging performance of the oil–paper insulation system, which provides a considerably greater application prospect for nanomodification insulation in liquid medium.

Analytical science has always been calling for simple, fast and ultra-sensitive methods to sense molecules of interest. Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has drawn much attention as a convenient tool for molecular fingerprint characterization. In addition to sample preparation, the key point of sensitive SERS detection is the preparation of highly reproducible and sensitive SERS substrates. In this paper, 2D gold nanoclusters are grown on surfaces of glass slips using an in-situ cyclic growth method in aqueous solutions to prepare high-quality SERS substrates, whose surface morphology can be effectively modulated by adjusting a few parameters during preparation. Substrates prepared with optimized parameters exhibit high SERS activity, uniform response, and good batch-to-batch reproducibility. Due to their strong absorption in the near-infrared range, the substrates can be combined with a portable Raman spectrometer with 785 nm excitation wavelength to detect traces of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS), a major source of corrosive sulfur in mineral insulating oil. A detection limit lower than 1 mg/L can be achieved with the aid of a simple sample pretreatment method, representing a promising on-site insulating oil analysis method for electric power industry.

The advancement of the Industrial Internet of Things and digital-intelligent machinery presents considerable demands in detecting impurities in industrial equipment lubricants or oils. Herein, a Tubular oil–solid triboelectric nanogenerator (TOS-TENG) is designed as a self-powered sensor for impurity detection in insulating oil flow. Specifically, an oleophobic triboelectric sensing layer with superior electron trapping capability is created based on Nano silica and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. Additionally, a periodic start-stop oil flow control method that facilitates the transition between flowing and stationary insulating oil is proposed, thereby generating periodic output signals from the TOS-TENG. Furthermore, a correlation between the output characteristics of the TOS-TENG and impurity properties (type, content) is established through a deep learning algorithm based on convolutional neural networks, enabling the identification of common impurities such as moisture, metal, and fiber particles in oil. As a proof of concept, an industrial-grade TOS-TENG-based device for in situ online monitoring of impurities in oil-immersed transformers is designed. This work offers novel insights into the compositional analysis of continuous fluids and provides a novel strategy for oil condition sensing in smart industrial equipment.

Real-time and accurate detection of moisture content in insulating oil is crucial for the safe operation of oil-filled electrical equipment. This study presents a method for preparing hydrophobic porous PI films for moisture sensing using supercritical CO 2 foaming (SCF) technology. The resulting porous PI films have a uniform and dense nanometer-scale microporous structure, with a water contact angle of 111.7°, indicating strong hydrophobicity and enabling the mitigation of hysteresis-induced measurement inaccuracies. Compared to sensors made using traditional methods such as non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), the moisture sensors fabricated using this method exhibit a response time of 10 s, with humidity hysteresis reduced from 9.1 %RH to 2.3 %RH, achieving both fast response and low humidity hysteresis. This method also holds broad application prospects in areas such as permeation membranes and energy.

Synthetic ester insulating oils have a high kinematic viscosity and dielectric dissipation factor, making it less likely that heat will be transferred during actual operation. The two-dimensional material hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has excellent insulating and heat dissipating properties, which can be added to the insulating oil to improve the electrical properties of the insulating oil. In this study, the isolated hexagonal boron nitride was first characterized morphologically and structurally using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Subsequently, the hexagonal boron nitride was added to the pentaerythritol ester oil. Its dispersion stability was first analyzed by determining its size distribution and zeta potential magnitude using dynamic light scattering. Then, the effects of different sizes of hexagonal boron nitride on the dielectric properties and breakdown voltage of the ester oil were evaluated. The results showed that h-BN with a size diameter of 2 μm was more effective in reducing the dielectric dissipation factor to 25% and increasing the volume resistivity by 155% when added at a concentration of 0.01 wt% compared to the base oil. In contrast, h-BN with a size diameter of 0.6 μm at 0.005 wt% significantly increased the average AC breakdown voltage from 66.7 kV in the untreated oil to 79.4 kV. For further insights, dipole moment and electrostatic potential analyses were employed, which showed that h-BN particle size and surface bonding affected the electrical properties of the ester solution.
