Green hydrogen and acetaldehyde production via photo-induced thermal dehydrogenation of bioethanol over a highly dispersed CuS/ TiO2 catalyst

Shuai Liu,Yang Meng,Chunlin Luo,Huiwen Zhu,Yunshen Song,Honglei Zhang,Tao Wu

The emergence of global warming issues has triggered the interest in producing carbon-neutral energy sources and fossil-based chemicals from affordable and renewable feedstocks (e.g., bio-ethanol). Herein, the synthesis of highly dispersed CuS/TiO 2 photothermal catalysts is reported for simultaneously converting ethanol into hydrogen and acetaldehyde under simulated sunlight. The catalyst achieved a hydrogen evolution rate of 51.61 mmol g −1  h −1 and an acetaldehyde production rate of 48.63 mmol g −1  h −1 , with a maximal acetaldehyde selectivity of 97% among carbon-containing products. Compared to pristine TiO 2 , the introduction of plasmonic CuS largely extended the light adsorption range and enhanced the photothermal performance, whilst the formation of heterojunction structure improved the charge transfer and separation efficiency. The density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that CuS/TiO 2 composite interfaces could significantly lower the activation energy of ethanol dehydrogenation reaction and improve hydrogen evolution reaction ability. This study provides deep insight into understanding and optimizing hot carrier dynamics in photothermal catalytic systems.

Expectations for the Role of Hydrogen and Its Derivatives in Different Sectors through Analysis of the Four Energy Scenarios: IEA-STEPS, IEA-NZE, IRENA-PES, and IRENA-1.5°C

Osama A. Marzouk

Recently, worldwide, the attention being paid to hydrogen and its derivatives as alternative carbon-free (or low-carbon) options for the electricity sector, the transport sector, and the industry sector has increased. Several projects in the field of low-emission hydrogen production (particularly electrolysis-based green hydrogen) have either been constructed or analyzed for their feasibility. Despite the great ambitions announced by some nations with respect to becoming hubs for hydrogen production and export, some quantification of the levels at which hydrogen and its derived products are expected to penetrate the global energy system and its various demand sectors would be useful in order to judge the practicality and likelihood of these ambitions and future targets. The current study aims to summarize some of the expectations of the level at which hydrogen and its derivatives could spread into the global economy, under two possible future scenarios. The first future scenario corresponds to a business-as-usual (BAU) pathway, where the world proceeds with the same existing policies and targets related to emissions and low-carbon energy transition. This forms a lower bound for the level of the role of hydrogen and its penetration into the global energy system. The second future scenario corresponds to an emission-conscious pathway, where governments cooperate to implement the changes necessary to decarbonize the economy by 2050 in order to achieve net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide (carbon neutrality), and thus limit the rise in the global mean surface temperature to 1.5 °C by 2100 (compared to pre-industrial periods). This forms an upper bound for the level of the role of hydrogen and its penetration into the global energy system. The study utilizes the latest release of the annual comprehensive report WEO (World Energy Outlook—edition year 2023, the 26th edition) of the IEA (International Energy Agency), as well as the latest release of the annual comprehensive report WETO (World Energy Transitions Outlook—edition year 2023, the third edition) of the IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency). For the IEA-WEO report, the business-as-usual situation is STEPS (Stated “Energy” Policies Scenario), and the emissions-conscious situation is NZE (Net-Zero Emissions by 2050). For the IRENA-WETO report, the business-as-usual situation is the PES (Planned Energy Scenario), and the emissions-conscious situation is the 1.5°C scenario. Through the results presented here, it becomes possible to infer a realistic range for the production and utilization of hydrogen and its derivatives in 2030 and 2050. In addition, the study enables the divergence between the models used in WEO and WETO to be estimated, by identifying the different predictions for similar variables under similar conditions. The study covers miscellaneous variables related to energy and emissions other than hydrogen, which are helpful in establishing a good view of how the world may look in 2030 and 2050. Some barriers (such as the uncompetitive levelized cost of electrolysis-based green hydrogen) and drivers (such as the German H2Global initiative) for the hydrogen economy are also discussed. The study finds that the large-scale utilization of hydrogen or its derivatives as a source of energy is highly uncertain, and it may be reached slowly, given more than two decades to mature. Despite this, electrolysis-based green hydrogen is expected to dominate the global hydrogen economy, with the annual global production of electrolysis-based green hydrogen expected to increase from 0 million tonnes in 2021 to between 22 million tonnes and 327 million tonnes (with electrolyzer capacity exceeding 5 terawatts) in 2050, depending on the commitment of policymakers toward decarbonization and energy transitions.

A membrane-based seawater electrolyser for hydrogen generation

Xie Heping,Zhao Zhiyu,Liu Tao,Wu Yifan,Lan Cheng,Jiang Wenchuan,Zhu Liangyu,Wang Yunpeng,Yang Dongsheng,Shao Zongping

Electrochemical saline water electrolysis using renewable energy as input is a highly desirable and sustainable method for the mass production of green hydrogen 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ; however, its practical viability is seriously challenged by insufficient durability because of the electrode side reactions and corrosion issues arising from the complex components of seawater. Although catalyst engineering using polyanion coatings to suppress corrosion by chloride ions or creating highly selective electrocatalysts has been extensively exploited with modest success, it is still far from satisfactory for practical applications 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 . Indirect seawater splitting by using a pre-desalination process can avoid side-reaction and corrosion problems 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , but it requires additional energy input, making it economically less attractive. In addition, the independent bulky desalination system makes seawater electrolysis systems less flexible in terms of size. Here we propose a direct seawater electrolysis method for hydrogen production that radically addresses the side-reaction and corrosion problems. A demonstration system was stably operated at a current density of 250 milliamperes per square centimetre for over 3,200 hours under practical application conditions without failure. This strategy realizes efficient, size-flexible and scalable direct seawater electrolysis in a way similar to freshwater splitting without a notable increase in operation cost, and has high potential for practical application. Importantly, this configuration and mechanism promises further applications in simultaneous water-based effluent treatment and resource recovery and hydrogen generation in one step.

Highly selective photoreforming of plastic waste into pyruvate and coupled with hydrogen production from seawater on the defect-rich 2D/2D Cd0.5Zn0.5S/NiPS3

Ziwen Wang,Xingyu Huo,Jun Wang,Huanyu Chen,Qiuyu Wang,Bo Lv

The integration of photocatalytic processes to simultaneously convert plastic waste into valuable chemicals and generate green hydrogen represents a significant advancement in the field of renewable energy and environmental remediation. The study demonstrated the potential of solar-powered photocatalytic processes to convert plastic waste, specifically polylactic acid (PLA), into value-added chemicals like pyruvate while simultaneously producing green hydrogen. The use of a CZS/NiPS 3 heterojunction as a catalyst was pivotal, as it created an efficient interface for electron transfer, enhancing the overall photocatalytic activity. The CZS/NiPS 3 -20 % catalyst exhibited remarkable performance, producing 777.4 mmol/g of hydrogen over 10 h in a pretreated PLA solution. In a real PLA plastic system, the catalyst generated 506.41 mmol/g of hydrogen over the same period, showcasing its practical applicability. The catalyst facilitated the selective photoreforming of PLA into pyruvate, a high-value chemical, as confirmed by GC-MS analysis. This dual functionality-hydrogen production and chemical conversion-maximizes the utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes, improving the overall efficiency of the process. This research offers a strategy to address plastic pollution and boost the hydrogen economy by converting waste into valuable products and using seawater for clean energy.

Electrodeposited Ternary Metal (Oxy)Hydroxide Achieves Highly Efficient Alkaline Water Electrolysis Over 1000 h Under Industrial Conditions

Chunfa Liu,Haoyun Bai,Jinxian Feng,Keyu An,Lun Li,Zhichao Yu,Lulu Qiao,Di Liu,Shuyang Peng,Hongchao Liu,Hui Pan

Large-scale green hydrogen production technology, based on the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy, relies heavily on non-precious metal oxygen evolution reactions (OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and stability under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60°C–80°C) at large current density. Here, we construct Fe and Co co-incorporated nickel (oxy)hydroxide (Fe 2.5 Co 2.5 Ni 10 O y H z @NFF) via a multi-metal electrodeposition, which exhibits outstanding OER performance (overpotential: 185 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 ). Importantly, an overwhelming stability for more than 1100 h at 500 mA cm −2 under industrial conditions is achieved. Our combined experimental and computational investigation reveals the surface-reconstructed γ-NiOOH with a high valence state is the active layer, where the optimal (Fe, Co) co-incorporation tunes its electronic structure, changes the potential determining step, and reduces the energy barrier, leading to ultrahigh activity and stability. Our findings demonstrate a facile way to achieve an electrocatalyst with high performance for the industrial production of green hydrogen.

Energy-efficient monosaccharides electrooxidation coupled with green hydrogen production by bifunctional Co9S8/Ni3S2 electrode

Yunpeng Liu,Ren Zou,Binhao Qin,Jianyun Gan,Xinwen Peng

Water electrolysis is a sustainable strategy for renewable energy conversion and storage that can be replenished by intermittent electricity sources. Despite the decades-long progress, the commercialization of water electrolysis remains fraught with difficulties owing to its high electricity consumption. We couple the hydrogen evolution reaction with the electrooxidation of xylose obtained from regenerated hemicellulose to organic acids, utilizing a bifunctional electrode consisting of Co 9 S 8 /Ni 3 S 2 . The electrochemically activated anodic sites, including Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Co 3+ /Co 4+ , Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ , and Ni 3+ /Ni 4+ redox species, are responsible for xylose electrooxidation, with the required potential reduced by 290 mV at 100 mA cm −2 compared with water oxidation. Moreover, the process yields over 60% towards formic acid at the anode, is accompanied by the production of hydrogen at the cathode. Xylose oxidation is kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable than water oxidation, significantly reducing the overall energy consumption relative to conventional water electrolysis. This study provides a promising strategy for the scalable and energy-efficient process of biomass electrooxidation coupled with hydrogen production.

Highly durable porous NiO-derived electrodes with superior bifunctional activity for scalable alkaline water electrolysis

Shukai Diao,Tianwen Wang,Wen Kuang,Su Yan,Xiaotian Zhang,Mingxuan Chen,Ying Liu,Aidong Tan,Tianrang Yang,Jianguo Liu

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is a leading “green hydrogen” production technology. Industrial electrodes use alkaline leaching to remove Al from NiAl alloy, creating pores and increasing specific surface area (SSA) but still suffer from poor electrode performance. This study presents a method for fabricating an efficient bifunctional electrode. The process involves creating a porous Ni layer with high SSA on nickel mesh (NM) by reducing NiO, which facilitates the formation of Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets. The resulting Ni/Ni(OH) 2 @NM electrode features a hydrophilic, gas-repellent and highly electrochemically active surface. It achieves low overpotentials for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (164 mV and 337 mV at 100 mA/cm 2 , respectively). The electrolyzer using Ni/Ni(OH) 2 @NM electrodes only requires 1.695 V to achieve 300 mA/cm 2 at 80 °C after a 2000 h durability test. The electrode also demonstrates excellent stability under frequent start-stop cycles, making it well-suited for integration with intermittent renewable energy sources.

Light-Irradiated Thermal Energy-Promoted Selective Phenol Hydrogenation on Cellulose-Supported Palladium Catalyst with Green Hydrogen

Peijing Guo,Shaoyu Yuan,Chenyang Yu,Zhangyi Xiong,Yushan Yang,Jianlong Du,Yaguang Li,Yongjun Gao

The energy and environmental crises urge us to develop a green and sustainable catalytic strategy to achieve chemical transformation. Thus, light-irradiated thermal energy, green hydrogen generated from water electrolysis, and natural cellulose were combined into a catalytic system for phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone in this article. The cellulose containing abundant hydroxyl groups improves the catalytic activity of palladium nanoclusters supported on it and hinder the overhydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. DFT calculations and control experiments demonstrate that the existence of glucose (the monomer of cellulose) on a Pd surface facilitates the dissociative adsorption of phenol on a catalyst and deactivates the hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol, which further clarifies the higher catalytic activity and better selectivity of Cel-1Pd. More importantly, the selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone can be conducted smoothly in a photothermal reactor under irradiation of a xenon lamp, effectively facilitating the benign conversion between light, thermal, and chemical energies.

Portrait of the Decarbonization and Renewables Penetration in Oman’s Energy Mix, Motivated by Oman’s National Green Hydrogen Plan

Osama A. Marzouk

The aim of this study is to quantitatively describe the anticipated change in the energy mix of the Sultanate of Oman (Oman) as the country moves forward in its national plan for green hydrogen, in order to become a global producer and exporter. This aim is achieved by curating recent data about energy projects in Oman that are either operating or planned (in a construction or pre-construction stage). Then, these data are processed further to extract useful insights about how the energy mix would change if the planned projects are realized and added to the operating ones. This reveals the serious commitment of the country to accomplish its national plan for green hydrogen (GH), where the green hydrogen production ambition for 2030 is about 1.125 million tons per annum (Mtpa), using a renewable energy capacity of approximately 18 GW. This ambition increases to about 3.5 Mtpa with approximately 70 GW of renewables in 2040, and increases further to about 8 Mtpa with approximately 180 GW of renewables in 2050. As a portrait of Oman’s energy mix with the assumption of successfully completing all planned energy projects, we found that the country is expected to have a total capacity of 83.1271 GW, with the share of renewables (solar and wind) reaching 83.133% (as compared to 15.0711 GW with an 8.907% renewables share for operating projects). Nearly all (precisely 99.571%) of the 68.0560 GW planned national energy capacity additions are based on solar or wind energy, while the traditional oil–gas energy is gradually phased out. Green hydrogen production dominates this surge in renewables penetration within the Omani energy mix, with 84.659% of the planned 34.3140 GW solar capacity additions linked with green hydrogen production, for operating water electrolyzers. Similarly, 98.804% of the planned 33.4500 GW wind capacity additions are linked with green hydrogen production.

Highly-dispersed 2D NiFeP/CoP heterojunction trifunctional catalyst for efficient electrolysis of water and urea

Guang-Lan Li,Ying-Ying Miao,Fei Deng,Shen Wang,Rui-Xin Wang,Wei-Hang Lu,Ru-Liang Chen

The electrocatalytic production of “green hydrogen”, such as through the electrolysis of water or urea has been vigorously advocated to alleviate the energy crisis. However, their electrode reactions including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) all suffer from sluggish kinetics, which urgently need catalysts to accelerate the processes. Herein, we design and prepare an OER/UOR/HER trifunctional catalyst by transforming the homemade CoO nanorod into a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin heterojunction nickel–iron-cobalt hybrid phosphides nanosheet (NiFeP/CoP) via a hydrothermal-phosphorization method. Consequently, a strong electronic interaction was found among the Ni 2 P/FeP 4 /CoP heterogeneous interfaces, which regulates the electronic structure. Besides the high mass transfer property of 2D nanosheet, Ni 2 P/FeP 4 /CoP displays improved OER/UOR/HER performance. At 10 mA cm − 2 , the OER overpotential reaches 274 mV in 1.0 M KOH, and the potential of UOR is only 1.389 V in 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea. More strikingly, the two-electrode systems for electrolysis water and urea-assisted electrolysis water assembled by NiFeP/CoP could maintain long-term stability for 35 h and 12 h, respectively. This work may help to pave the way for upcoming research horizons of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Carbon-negative valorization of biomass waste into affordable green hydrogen and battery anodes

Hanmin Yang,Anissa Nurdiawati,Ritambhara Gond,Shiwei Chen,Shule Wang,Bin Tang,Yanghao Jin,Ilman Nuran Zaini,Ziyi Shi,Wujun Wang,Andrew Martin,Reza Younesi,Linda Sandström,Pär G. Jönsson,Weihong Yang,Tong Han

The global Sustainable Development Goals highlight the necessity for affordable and clean energy, designated as SDG7. A sustainable and feasible biorefinery concept is proposed for the carbon-negative utilization of biomass waste for affordable H 2 and battery anode material production. Specifically, an innovative tandem biocarbon + NiAlO + biocarbon catalyst strategy is constructed to realize a complete reforming of biomass pyro-vapors into H 2 +CO (as a mixture). The solid residues from pyrolysis are upgraded into high-quality hard carbon (HCs), demonstrating potential as sodium ion battery (SIBs) anodes. The product, HC-1600-6h, exhibited great electrochemical performance when employed as (SIBs) anodes (full cell: 263 Wh/kg with ICE of 89%). Ultimately, a comprehensive process is designed, simulated, and evaluated. The process yields 75 kg H 2 , 169 kg HCs, and 891 kg captured CO 2 per ton of biomass achieving approx. 100% carbon and hydrogen utilization efficiencies. A life cycle assessment estimates a biomass valorization process with negative-emissions (−0.81 kg CO 2 /kg-biomass, reliant on Sweden wind electricity). A techno-economic assessment forecasts a notably profitable process capable of co-producing affordable H 2 and hard carbon battery anodes. The payback period of the process is projected to fall within two years, assuming reference prices of 13.7 €/kg for HCs and 5 €/kg for H 2 . The process contributes to a novel business paradigm for sustainable and commercially viable biorefinery process, achieving carbon-negative valorization of biomass waste into affordable energy and materials.

Influence of Power Fluctuation on Ni-Based Electrode Degradation and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance in Alkaline Water Splitting: Probing the Effect of Renewable Energy on Water Electrolysis

Congying Liu,Bing Lin,Hailong Zhang,Yingying Wang,Hangzhou Wang,Junlei Tang,Caineng Zou

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?Square-wave power has the greatest influence on Ni cathode HER compared to step- and triangle-power.Increasing the amplitude of square-wave power enhances coated cathode’s degradation. What is the implication of the main finding?Guidance for industrializing hydrogen production via renewable energy-coupled electrolytic water.Evaluation theory of cathode materials in electrolytic water.AbstractThe combination of water electrolysis and renewable energy to produce hydrogen is a promising way to solve the climate and energy crisis. However, the fluctuating characteristics of renewable energy not only present a significant challenge to the use of water electrolysis electrodes, but also limit the development of the hydrogen production industry. In this study, the effects of three different types of waveforms (square, step, and triangle, which were used to simulate the power input of renewable energy) on the electrochemical catalysis behavior of Ni plate cathodes for HER was investigated. During the test, the HER performance of the Ni cathode increased at first and then slightly decreased. The fluctuating power led to the degradation of the Ni cathode surface, which enhanced the catalysis effect by increasing the catalytic area and the active sites. However, prolonged operation under power fluctuations could have damaged the morphology of the electrode surface and the substances comprising this surface, potentially resulting in a decline in catalytic efficiency. In addition, the electrochemical catalysis behavior of the prepared FeNiMo-LDH@NiMo/SS cathode when subjected to square-wave potential with different fluctuation amplitudes was also extensively studied. A larger amplitude of fluctuating power led to a change in the overpotential and stability of the LDH electrode, which accelerated the degradation of the cathode. This research provides a technological basis for the coupling of water electrolysis and fluctuating renewable energy and thus offers assistance to the development of the “green hydrogen” industry.
