Amphoteric retarder for long-standing cementing: Preparation, properties and working mechanism

Wenchuan Wu,Xiaorong Yu,Anbang Hu,Han Yan,Zhengliang Dong,Huan Yang,Gaoshen Su

Amphoteric retarder (AIDA) was prepared by radical copolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), itaconic acid (IA), 2-(Methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC) and methyl allyl polyethenoxy ether (TPEG). The characteristics of AIDA were verified by FTIR and 1 HNMR. In addition, the performances of AIDA in cement slurry including thickening time, compressive strength developments, and adaptability to long standing cementing with lager temperature differences were investigated. The results indicated that AIDA possessed excellent temperature-resistance (180 °C) and good adaptability to long standing cementing with larger temperature differences of 90 °C. Finally, the retarding mechanism of AIDA was revealed through transverse relaxation time (T 2 ) distribution, XRD tests, and adsorption behavior of AIDA on cement particles. The results demonstrated that the stronger retarding effect of AIDA originated from the dual adsorption of AIDA on cement particles compared with AMPS-IA copolymer (PAI). AIDA outperformed PAI in its adaptability to long-term cementing, which was responsible to (a): the adsorbed amount of AIDA at higher temperature is higher than that of lower temperatures, therefore, AIDA has a stronger retarding effect at higher temperature and weaker retarding effect at lower temperature. (b) Compared to PAI, the adsorption strength of AIDA is weaker and easy to de-adsorb, so both the retarding effect and the hydration reaction of cement are realized. Thus, the super-retarding phenomenon of cement slurry containing AIDA is effectively prevented.

Deterioration Reason and Improvement Measure of the Retarding Effect of Protein Retarder on Phosphorus Building Gypsum

Liu Zhigang,Tang Zezheng,Yang Lirong,Wang Chunmei,Xie Yuantao,Liu Yisen

The retarding effect of protein retarder on phosphorus building gypsum (PBG) and desulfurization building gypsum (DBG) was investigated, and the results show that protein retarder for DBG can effectively prolong the setting time and displays a better retarding effect, but for PBG shows a poor retarding effect. Furthermore, the deterioration reason of the retarding effect of protein retarder on PBG was investigated by measuring the pH value and the retarder concentration of the liquid phase from vacuum filtration of PBG slurry at different hydration time, and the measure to improve the retarding effect of protein retarding on PBG was suggested. The pH value of PBG slurry (<5.0) is lower than that of DBG slurry (7.8–8.5). After hydration for 5 min, the concentration of retarder in liquid phase of DBG slurry gradually decreases, but in liquid phase of PBG slurry continually increases, which results in the worse retarding effect of protein retarder on PBG. The liquid phase pH value of PBG slurry can be adjusted higher by sodium silicate, which is beneficial to improvement in the retarding effect of the retarder. By adding 1.0% of sodium silicate, the initial setting time of PBG was efficiently prolonged from 17 to 210 min, but little effect on the absolute dry flexural strength was observed.

Preparation of Gypsum Retarding Material and Activated Carbon from Waste Mycelium

Mi Mi Chen,Meng Meng Zhang,Feng Qing Zhao

A clean and safe process of utilizing waste penicillin mycelium (WPM) was proposed in this paper. We treated WPM by soaking it in aqueous alkaline solution, to produce retarders for hemihydrate gypsum (the protein hydrolysate) by filtration. The filter cake was used to produce activated carbon, while the waste water can be reused for soaking process. This retarder can effectively prolong the setting time of gypsum with less drop in mechanical strength of gypsum plaster. The activated carbon produced with 674 mg/g of Iodine value, which meets the requirements of general industrial applications.

Synthesis and characterization of a quaternary copolymer retarder for cementing in a long sealing section with large temperature difference

Zhigang Peng,Chen Chen,Qian Feng,Yong Zheng,Huan Liu,Chunyang Yu

Because of the contradiction between the safe thickening time of cement slurry and over-retarding at the top in the cementing of a long sealing section with large temperature difference, we synthesized a quaternary copolymerization retarder with 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AA), diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and allyl polyoxyethylene ether (APEG). The structure of the retarder was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR and its thermal stability was tested by TG-DSC. The results showed that the molecule contained the designed functional groups, the initial pyrolysis temperature was 364 °C, and its performance was stable in the temperature range of 90–150 °C. There was no “bulge” or “step” on the thickening curve, and the thickening time could meet the safety requirements of pumping at high temperatures. It can also ensure the development of compressive strength of cement in the low-temperature section and has excellent temperature adaptability. Through the study of its retardation mechanism, it was found that the retarder molecules formed an adsorption layer of a certain thickness on the surface of cement particles by adsorption, and the concentration of Ca2+ in the solution was reduced by complexation, so as to prevent cement hydration and prolong the thickening time. Generally speaking, the large temperature difference adaptability of retarders was mainly manifested in the decrease of molecular adsorption capacity and performance at low-temperature and the improvement of molecular adsorption capacity and performance at high-temperature.

Effects of retarders on the rheological properties of coal fly ash/superfine iron tailings-based 3D printing geopolymer: Insight into the early retarding mechanism

Hongyu Lu,Jin Wang,Xinyuan Zhan,Pengcheng Zhao,Zhilin Xie,Shaoping Wang,Zhengbo Yue

To increase the utilization rate of superfine iron tailings (SIT), a novel coal fly ash (CFA)/SIT-based three-dimensional printing geopolymers (CS-3DPG) were synthesized for high-value resource application of SIT. The optimal preparation parameters of CS-3DPG were sodium citrate of 0.4%, water-solid ratio of 38%, SiO 2 /Na 2 O molar ratio of 1 and alkali activator of 6%, with the compressive strength of 32.14 MPa. Besides, the yield stress and plastic viscosity (rheological properties) of CS-3DPG reached 284 Pa and 18.8 Pa·S, respectively. The sodium aluminum silicate hydrate (N-A-S-H) gels were identified as dominant hydration products by the selective chemical extractions. Microstructural analysis also successfully indicated that the retarder caused some CFA and SIT to be unreacted, resulting in the decrease of early compressive strength compared with CS-3DPG. Based on the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) values, kinetics of hydration and hydration kinetic contribution degree results, retarders effectually inhibited nucleation and growth (NG) and diffusion (D). The phase-boundary interaction (I) reaction played a major role after adding retarders. This work successfully reveals the early retarding mechanism of CS-3DPG, and provides the possibility of large-scale resource application of SIT-based 3DPG in 3D printing construction.

Synergistic effect of AMPS-based copolymer retarder and HEDP used for set-regulation of ultra-high temperature (≥200 ℃) cementing slurry: Performance and mechanism

Hang Zhang,Miaomiao Hu,Yun Cheng,Xiaohua Li,Xinyang Zhang,Yujie Ying,Jie Cao,Xiujian Xia,Shusen Zhang,Zhanfu Wei,Jintang Guo

This work proposed an ultra-high temperature set-regulation method to provide a reference scheme for the optimal retarder design of ultra-deep formation oil well cementing slurry. It was found that there was a synergistic retarding effect between 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid-based copolymer retarder and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, and the latter could serve as an intensifier for the former to significantly prolong the ultra-high temperature (≥200 ℃) thickening time of cement slurry. The thickening progress mechanism of cement slurry was studied from the perspective of hydration kinetics and mineral content evolution. Results indicated that the content of cement hydration products during the thickening process did not increase gradually and linearly, but increased rapidly within several minutes near thickening time due to the acceleration of hydration. The introduction of intensifier 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid extended the thickening time by highly delaying the hydration of silicate minerals (C 3 S/C 2 S), while less affected the hydration of aluminate minerals (C 4 AF/C 3 A). Furthermore, the synergistic principle between copolymer retarder and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid was proposed from microchemical perspective. Analysis showed that the PO 3 2- was a stronger anchoring group than -COO - and could compensate for the decline of Ca 2+ chelating ability of copolymer retarder caused by decarboxylation and thermal oxidative degradation in ultra-high temperature and alkaline environment, thus further delaying the hydration.

The ability of sodium metasilicate pentahydrate to adjust the compatibility between synthetic Fluid Loss Additives and Retarders applying in oil well cement

Lei Cao,Jintang Guo,Jianhua Tian,Miaomiao Hu,Chun Guo,Yang Xu,Meiyu Wang,Jinjie Fan

Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate (SMP), a type of hardening-accelerator, was widely used in cement slurry to enhance its early strength. In this study, we found that SMP had an novel ability to adjust the compatibility between 2-Acrylamido-2-Methyl Propane Sulfonic Acid (AMPS)-based Fluid Loss Additive (FLA) and Retarder in oil well cement. Reasons for this significance were proposed, that SMP promoted the formation and growth of hydration products by accelerating the hydration velocity of cement slurry, which increased the adsorption sites of cement hydration products. As that happens, the more AMPS-based polymers were adsorbed simultaneously on the surface of the hydration product, thereby effectively improving the compatibility problem caused by the competitive adsorption between the admixtures. Meanwhile, while SMP speeded up the hydration reaction, the pores space of cement hydrated particles were filled with more hydrates and consequently altered its pore size distribution, whose action was also beneficial to the development of early strength. Overall, those findings will provide further interpretation for the effect of admixture on cement hydration products and offer some useful references for practical application of oil well cementing in the future.

High-temperature resistant copolymer oil well cement retarder: Synthesis, assessment of performance, and mechanism of retardation

Jifa Bian,Zhongbin Ye,Xuecheng Zheng,Chengwen Deng,Lei Tang

This work used aqueous solution free radical polymerization to create polymers of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, itaconic acid, and allyl polyoxyethylene ether as a high-temperature resistant retarder (APMS/IA/APEG, from now on referred to as AIA). Gel permeation chromatography, fourier transform infrared (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 HNMR), and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG) were used to characterize their molecular structure and characteristics. Tests were conducted on the thickening time, rheological characteristics, and compressive strength of AIA in cement slurries. The cement slurry thickened for 276 min at 180°C during the test, and the cement stone's 24-h compressive strength was consistently more than 20 MPa. The hydration products were analyzed using x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy methods, which were then coupled with molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the AIA retarding mechanism. When AIA is added to a cement slurry, it forms a chelate structure with Ca 2+ and a strong adsorption layer on the surfaces of the cement particles. This stops the cement from hydrating. The AIA side chain, APEG, can wrap the active group in AIA at low temperatures. AIA exposes more adsorption groups because of the APEG chains stretching at higher temperatures. AIA can, therefore, be used for deep well operations at high temperatures.

Effect of Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid and Tartaric Acid on Compressive Strength and Water Resistance of Magnesium Oxysulfate Cement

Yutong Zhou,Zheng Zhou,Lvchao Qiu,Kuangda Lu,Dongmei Xu,Shiyuan Zhang,Shixuan Zhang,Shouwei Jian,Hongbo Tan

Organic acids could act as retarders in magnesium oxysulfide (MOS) systems, not only delaying setting and improving fluidity but also enhancing compressive strength and water resistance. These effects are generally attributed to both the presence of H+ions and anion chelation. However, the enhancement efficiency of different organic acids in MOS systems varies significantly due to differences in their molecular structures. To determine the underlying mechanism, this study comparatively investigated the effects of amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) and tartaric acid (TA) on the setting time, fluidity, compressive strength, and water resistance of the MOS system, with the two additives incorporated at mole ratios to MgO ranging from 0.002 to 0.006. The mechanism behind it was revealed by discussion on the hydration heat, hydrates, and pH value. Results showed that both ATMP and TA could effectively improve the fluidity, delay the setting process, and enhance the mechanical properties, including strength and water resistance. At a mole ratio of 0.006, the incorporation of ATMP increased the 28 d compressive strength and the softening coefficient by 214.12% and 37.29%, respectively, compared with the blank group. In contrast, under the same dosage, TA led to an increase of 55.13% in the 28 d strength and 22.03% in the softening coefficient. Furthermore, hydration heat, product analysis, and pH measurements indicated that both ATMP and TA inhibited hydration during the initial hours but promoted hydration at later stages. The potential reason could be divided into two aspects: (1) H+ions from ATMP and TA suppressing the formation of Mg(OH)2; (2) anion chelation with Mg2+in the liquid phase, leading to a supersaturated solution with higher saturation, which further hindered Mg(OH)2formation and facilitated the later development of 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O (517 phase). By contrast, under the same mole dosage of H+or anions, the enhancement in compressive strength as well as the water resistance is superior when using ATMP. This was owing to its stronger chelating ability of ATMP, which more effectively inhibited Mg(OH)2formation and then promoted the formation of the 517 phase. These findings confirm that the chelating ability of anions exerts an important impact on the retarding effect as well as the enhancement of strength in MOS systems.

High-value conversion of leather waste: An enhanced protein-based retarder for gypsum construction

Xiaoliang Ding,Kaiwen Su,Yi Li,Yejun Yan,Huanghuang Chen,Zhijun Hu,Yudan Yi

Effective management of leather waste is essential for the sustainable advancement of the leather industry. Leather scraps, which represent a valuable biomass resource, are primarily composed of protein-rich collagen fibers. This study presents the development of a novel protein retarding material (PRM) derived from leather scraps through high-pressure hydrothermal treatment. Citric acid (CA) was incorporated into the PRM molecular chain using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, resulting in a highly efficient protein-based retarder (C-PRM) optimized for use in building gypsum. C-PRM demonstrated outstanding performance in extending gypsum setting time, with its retarding effect closely linked to its dosage. The CA modification significantly enhanced the delay in hemihydrate hydration and the formation of dihydrate. Additionally, the introduction of carboxyl groups through CA modification improved the calcium-binding capacity of C-PRM by 14.73 % compared to PRM. By promoting calcium-peptide chelation, C-PRM more effectively inhibited the involvement of free Ca 2+ in the hydration reaction, thus delaying the conversion of hemihydrate to dihydrate and providing superior gypsum retardation. This advanced protein-based retarder, derived from leather waste, offers a promising solution for gypsum retarder development and introduces a novel approach to the high-value utilization of leather waste.

Rheological parameters and building time of 3D printing sulphoaluminate cement paste modified by retarder and diatomite

Mingxu Chen,Laibo Li,Jiaao Wang,Yongbo Huang,Shoude Wang,Piqi Zhao,Lingchao Lu,Xin Cheng

Recent advances have proposed new requirements on the controlling of the hydration, the rheology, and the structural build-up of 3D printing (3DP) sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) paste. In this study, the boric acid (BA), the sodium gluconate (SG), and the diatomite were used to control these behaviors of 3DP SAC paste , and the printed structures could be well built based on the extrusion system. The results show that the building time and printability can be improved by the introduction of BA and SG into SAC paste, but the excessive dosage will cause the structural failure. To decrease the structural deformation of 3DP SAC paste, the diatomite was applied to increase the static yield stress and elasticity modulus. Meanwhile, a paste sample with the structural deformation less than 10% can be achieved when the static and dynamic yield stress was controlled in the range of 590–895 Pa, and 509–722 Pa, respectively. In conclusion, the 3D printed structures and rheology could be well controlled by the introduction of retarders and diotomite in the 3DP SAC paste.

Development and optimization of geopolymer-based 3D printing materials utilizing industrial solid waste: Rheological properties and practical applications

Keheng Pan,Yinhan Cheng,Guangfei Qu,Zheng Yuan,Guojun Liu

As urbanization and industrialization continue to advance, the issue of solid waste generated by industrial production has become increasingly prominent, posing a serious threat to the natural environment. This study therefore proposes a basic design concept for 3D printing materials based on industrial solid waste, demonstrating its potential for practical applications. The study commences with an examination of the molding mechanism, followed by an investigation into the impact of retarder, thickener and solid waste on the performance of the paste. The relationship between retarding mechanisms, rheological properties and performance control is also explored. A printable geopolymer paste was prepared by combining industrial solid waste components with dopants, with a view to achieving varying coagulation times and rheological properties. The addition of 3 wt% retarder and 0.4 wt% thickener resulted in a paste that was utilized for printing molding. This paste exhibited a retention index of 2.1 %, a collapse ratio of 0.5 %, an initial setting time of 14 min, and a fluidity of 190 mm. The 14-day compressive and flexural strengths were found to be 65 MPa and 1.9 MPa, respectively. This study is of considerable theoretical and practical significance, and it plays a pivotal role in promoting the utilization of industrial solid waste resources and the advancement of green manufacturing technology.
