In this work, lignite, a low-grade coal, was modified using the solid-phase activation method with the aid of a Pd/CeO2 nanoparticle catalyst to improve its pore structure and nutrient absorption. Results indicate that the adsorption ability of the activated lignite to NO3–, NH4+, H2PO4–, and K+ was significantly higher than that of raw lignite. The activated lignite was successfully combined with the polymeric slow-release fertilizer, which exhibits typical slow-release behavior, to prepare the super large granular activated lignite slow-release fertilizer (SAF). In addition to the slow-release ability, the SAF showed excellent water-retention capabilities. Soil column leaching experiments further confirmed the slow-release characteristics of the SAF with fertilizer nutrient loss greatly reduced in comparison to traditional and slow-release fertilizers. Furthermore, field tests of the SAF in an orchard showed that the novel SAF was better than other tested fertilizers in improve the growth of young apple trees. Findings from this study suggest that the newly developed SAF has great potential to be used in apple cultivation and production systems in the future.

To improve the efficient use of nitrogen and decrease the environmental pollution of N losses, a novel and biodegradable composite hydrogel was prepared by chemical cross-linking synthesis using gelatin (Gel), chitosan (CS) and polylactic acid (PLA) as raw materials. Urea as the nitrogen source was loaded into this new biodegradable hydrogel using the solution immersion method. The chemical structures of the composite hydrogels were characterized and their properties were analyzed by XRD and XPS. The regulation of urea loading and the swelling behavior of the composite hydrogel under different temperature conditions were investigated; the release behavior and release model of the composite hydrogel in the aqueous phase was explored. The results show that the loading of urea is controllable in aqueous urea solution with different concentrations. In the water phase, it shows a three-stage sustained release behavior, that is, the initial release rate of urea is relatively fast, and the medium release rate of urea gradually slows down, and finally the nutrient release rate tends to be flat. The release behavior in the water phase fits to the Ritger–Peppas model. Within 10 min, 180 min and 900 min, the cumulative nutrient release rate of gelatin/chitosan/PLA-urea (GCPU) composite hydrogel is 20%, 70% and 86%, respectively. Compared with pure urea, The urea diffusion time of GCPU was extended by 1350-times. In addition, the GCPU also has good water absorption and water retention properties, in which average water content can reach as high as 4448%. All of the results in this work showed that GCPU hydrogel had good water absorption and retention and N slow-release properties, which are expected to be widely used in sustainable agriculture and forestry, especially in arid and degraded land. Keywords:polylactic acid;urea;composite hydrogel;slow-release fertilizer;biodegradable

Low utilization rate of chemical fertilizers is a main limitation for improving crop yields. Peanut bran carbon dots (CDs) have been shown to boost Italian lettuce growth, while hydrophilic CDs can easily flow away with water during application, which leads to CDs wastage and water losing. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a material with slow-release capacity of nutrient elements and CDs along with water-retaining function. In this study, acrylic acid and acrylamide were reacted with urea, potassium phosphate and other materials, thus a hydrogel slow-release fertilizer was firstly designed. Then, peanut bran CDs were added into the hydrogels to prepare a novel CDs based hydrogel slow-release fertilizer (CDs-hydrogels). Experimental results show that the prepared CDs-hydrogels have high water retention capacity and element release capacity of N, P, K. Most importantly, the CDs within these hydrogels, via its changes in luminescence, the releasing rate of nutrient elements can be monitored.

Artemia egg shell loaded with nano-magnesium (shell-Mg) can be used to recover phosphorus from wastewater. The exhausted Artemia egg shell-Mg (denoted as shell-Mg-P) can be used as a slow-release fertilizer for phosphorus reuse. However, due to the coexistence of heavy metal ions in the environment, the application of slow-release fertilizer for phosphorus removal and reuse may have potential risks. In this paper, the potential risks of Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ in phosphorus wastewater and soil were studied from the formation and application process of shell-Mg-P. The result showed that shell-Mg adsorbed Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ in phosphate wastewater during the formation of shell-Mg-P and became shell-Mg-P-metal hybrid biomaterial . Although the experiment proved that the existence of heavy metal ions did not affect the phosphorus slow-release behavior of slow-release fertilizer, but the heavy metal ions in the shell-Mg-P-metal were also slow released. The pot experiment results confirmed that the slow-release phosphorus fertilizers (shell-Mg-P and shell-Mg-P-metal) in the soil polluted in low concentration of heavy metals can reduce the amount of heavy metals in whole wheat seedlings and promote wheat seedling growth. However, the application of slow-release fertilizers increased the translocation efficiency (T FR to SL ) of metal from root (R) to aboveground part (stem and leaves, SL), promoted the transportation of heavy metals from roots to the stems and leaves, and increased the safety risk of the wheat seedling edible. Therefore, besides the positive role of slow-release fertilizers in retaining heavy metals and reducing the amount of heavy metals in whole seedlings, the risk that it may aggravate the translocation of heavy metals to stems and leaves should be paid more attention, so as to ensure the safe and reliable application of slow-release fertilizers.

Slow-release fertilizers have been widely used to promote agricultural production with less losses to the environment. However, further achievement of fertilizer with precisely regulable release performance is still full of challenges, especially for the most used nitrogen fertilizer – urea. In this study, we provide a strategy for regulating performance of slow-release urea fertilizer (SRUF) based on inclusion complexation between biodegradable copolyester and urea via simply changing chain composition. The units of butylene adipate (BA) are copolymerized into the main chains of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) to obtain a series of random copolyesters of poly(butylene succinate- co -butylene adipate) (PBSA). The crystallizability of PBSA declines with increasing BA content, leading to the longer slow-release time for corresponding PBSA/urea inclusion complex fertilizer. The monotonous, nearly linear relationship between chain composition and the slow-release performance of SRUF has been demonstrated, revealing the great potential to design SRUF with precise slow-release time. Consequently, pot trails in the lab are employed to evaluate the promotion effect of SRUF on Brassica chinensis L.. The growth indexes of plants significantly increase with increasing BA content in PBSA chains used in SRUF of inclusion complex. The plants reach about twice of dry weight in optimized group by referring to neat urea group when the SRUF shows a release duration closely matching to the growth cycle of Brassica chinensis L.

A new type of water-retaining, slow-release fertilizer (WSF) based on double-network hydrogels was fabricated via the ion-crosslinking of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and the free radical polymerization of polymerizable β-cyclodextrin (MAH-CD), polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDA), acrylamide (AM), and acrylic acid (AA) with urea-loaded halloysite as an additive. The effects of the AM to AA monomer ratio, the halloysite content, the AlCl 3 content and the MAH-CD content on the swelling ratio were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were applied to characterize the structure and properties of the WSF. The swelling behavior and water retention capacity of the fertilizer were investigated using a classic gravimetric method. The experimental results indicated that the presence of halloysite nanotubes clearly adjusted the swelling and release properties of the WSF. Kinetic modeling indicated that the swelling mechanism and slow release behavior were consistent with a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Form the considerations of its properties and raw materials, the fertilizer developed here has a good prospect of application and extension.

Slow-release fertilizers (MSRFs) are effective in improving fertilizer utilization and reducing environmental fertilizer pollution. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was modified with kitchen waste oil (KWO) and grafted with urea to prepare a urea MSRF. FTIR, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and water contact angle were used to study the MSRF structure and properties. The effects of the nitrogen content on its properties were also investigated through release performance and degradation behavior evaluation and plant experiments. The results showed that the oil-based polyalcohol-modified PVA (OPMPVA) solution prepared from KWO had good compatibility with the urea-modified compound hydroxylurea, and the prepared MSRF had good hydrophobicity, degradation and slow-release properties. The nutrient release period reached more than 20 days, and the degradation rate after 30 days reached 10.2%. Plant experiments showed that the MSRF prepared in this research has good application potential, and the utilization of nitrogen nutrients was improved.

Excessive application of fertilizers and their losses have exerted a great threat on soil environment. Slow- or controlled-release fertilizers have been widely produced to alleviate the problem. However, most of them can not remedy contaminated soil environment, and even make it worse. To improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce soil environmental pollution, lignin, an extensive biomass source, was used to synthesize a lignin-based superabsorbent (LPA), which was then introduced into the fertilizer as an outer coating material to obtain lignin-based multifunctional fertilizer (LMF). Results showed that the introduction of LPA can improve water-holding and water-retention capacity of soil and nutrients release behavior of fertilizers. The cumulative release rates of nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc were 79.5%, 46.7% and 60.1% after 25 days, respectively. Additionally, LMF can efficiently immobilize and restrict the migration of bivalent lead (Pb(II)) by complexation with lignin. About 91.7% of Pb(II) was immobilized after soil-sand mixture with Pb(NO 3 ) 2 was treated by LMF. The pot experiments indicated that the LMF exhibited a positive effect on the growing of corn in Pb(II)-contaminated soil. Therefore, this work provides a promising fertilizer to improve the utilization efficiency of water, sustained release of nutrients, and immobilization of Pb (II) in contaminated soil.

A novel sodium alginate-grafted poly(acrylic acid)/graphene oxide (NaAlg-g-PAA/GO) composite hydrogel was prepared via ultraviolet irradiation, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy spectrometer. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was employed to adsorb NH 4 + from aqueous solution and used as slow-release nitrogen fertilizers (SNFs). Result indicated that the adsorption process for NH 4 + reached equilibrium within 50 min, with the adsorption capacity of 6.6 mmol g −1 even if 30 wt% GO was incorporated. The results of adsorption kinetic and isotherm were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model. The thermodynamics analysis showed the adsorption process was spontaneous. The study indicated excellent water-holding ratio of soil with 2 wt% SNFs was 81.2%, and nitrogen release was up to 55.1% within 40 days in soil. Overall, NaAlg-g-PAA/GO could be considered as an efficient adsorbent for the recovery of nitrogen with the agronomic reuse as a fertilizer.

The use of humic acids (HAs) has gained increasing attention as a response to the decline in agricultural land productivity, which has been exacerbated by the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers. This work presents a novel HAs-based slow-release fertilizer (SRF-HAs) developed through in-situ radiation-synthesizing starch-grafted polyacrylamide (AM) hydrogels encapsulating HAs. To prevent the highly active phenolic groups in HAs from quenching the free radicals generated during in-situ radiation synthesis, the surface of HAs particles was firstly coated with stearic acid or wax. The microstructures and performances of the SRF-HAs were characterized using SEM NMR, FTIR, rheometer, and release rate measurement. Additionally, TGA was utilized to quantify the grafting and conversion rates of AM. It was found that the release rate of HAs strongly depends on the microstructures and strength of the starch-based hydrogel, which is governed by both the surface coating and radiation-synthesizing processing. Both FTIR and NMR confirmed the successful grafting polymerization on starch chains. The results showed that with increasing content of SA-coated HAs from 3 % to 10 %, the grafting efficiency, grafting rate, and monomer conversion of starch grafted acrylamide reaction system decreased slightly from 42.7 % to 40.8 %, 78.3–76.6 % and 86.5–82.08 %, respectively. The release periods of HAs reaching 90 % from the coated samples extended up to 53 and 60 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the initial bust releases were significantly reduced to about 30 %, complying with ISO and ASTM standards. The relationships between the microstructures, properties of the hydrogels, and release rate were discussed and established, providing valuable guidelines for developing SRF-HAs.

In this work, three types of nanosized magnesium oxide (MgO) modified tobermorite (TOB) were synthesized through a gelation-calcination method. The prepared adsorbents were applied to simultaneously remove N and P from the simulated and actual wastewater through struvite method. Characterizations of the adsorbents including XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM-EDS, TEM, BET and sedimentation experiment were conducted and proved that MgO was successfully loaded on TOB. The influences of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial solution pH and temperature on N and P removal were explored. The modified TOB exhibited excellent removal performance in a wide range of pH due to the ability to regulate pH spontaneously, and this ability was under better control after carbon template was introduced. With suitable adsorbent dosage, both TOB@MgO 2 and TOB@MgO 3 could remove over 80 % of N and nearly 100 % of P in 15 min and 4 h respectively. Additionally, the removal efficiency was slightly affected by temperature. The process of N and P removal could be better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating it was mainly controlled by surface chemical reactions. TOB was not only used as the carrier for MgO loading but also could collaborate with MgO to remove N and P, especially for P removal. Besides the diversified chemisorption, physisorption also played a nonnegligible role in the removal. Finally, the pot experiment confirmed the feasibility of directly using the modified TOB after adsorption as a slow-release fertilizer.

Biochar (BC) has been utilized in the production of carbon-based slow-release fertilizers owing to its extensive specific surface area and abundant functional groups. However, conventional biochar-based fertilizers still exhibit inadequate slow-release performance, necessitating further modification. In this paper, pinecone biochar (PB) was prepared by pyrolysis of pinecone, an agricultural waste, at different temperatures. Among all samples synthesized at different temperatures, the PB prepared at 700 °C exhibited the largest specific surface area, denoted as 700 PB, reaching 305.35 m 2 /g. Compared with biochar-coated urea prepared at other temperatures, the PB-coated urea produced at 700 °C demonstrates the optimal controlled-release performance. Cellulose acetate (CA) represents a cost-effective and naturally occurring biodegradable material. Therefore, in this study, urea was encapsulated with 700 PB and CA through physical coating and impregnation, leveraging CA's cost-effectiveness and inherent biodegradability, resulting in the successful preparation of a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer (PBUA). The sustained release performance and mechanism of different compositions of PBUA under different sustained release conditions (pH and temperature) were investigated. Among them, the composition was optimized, yielding a coated PBUA with a mass ratio of 700 PB to urea of 1.5: 1 and a CA mass fraction of 9 wt%, referred to as PBU 1.5 A 9 . The release performance of this coated PBUA is demonstrated to be the most optimal. Under room temperature and neutral conditions, the cumulative release amount of PBU 1.5 A 9 within 24 h is 4.37 %, which increases to 55.63 % after 28 days and further rises to 72.56 % after 60 days. The release results of PBUA are in strict conformity with the national standards. The results suggest that the release mechanism of PBUA adheres to the Weibull model. This work offers an effective approach for the preparation of slow-release nitrogen fertilizers.
