The Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) concept was adopted to establish a quantitative analysis of multi-components with a single marker (QAMS) method for industrial lanolin alcohol, targeting cholesterol, lanosterol, and 24,25-dihydrolanosterol. The potential critical method parameters (CMPs) were identified as column temperature, flow rate, and gradient. Definitive screening design and statistical modeling were employed to optimize the gradient conditions of the mobile phase, column temperature, and flow rate. The Method Operable Design Region (MODR) was determined using a risk-based quantification approach. The robustness was assessed using a Plackett–Burman experimental design, followed by methodological validation. Optimal analytical conditions were as follows: acetonitrile (B)—water (A) mobile phase system; flow rate of 1.58 mL/min; detection wavelength of 205 nm; injection volume of 10 µL; and column temperature of 37 °C. A gradient elution program was implemented as follows: 0–19.0 min, 90.5% B; 19.0–25.0 min, 90.5–100% B; and 25.0–55.0 min, 100% B. Cholesterol served as an internal standard for quantifying lanosterol and 24,25-dihydrolanosterol, with relative correction factors of 0.4227 and 0.8228, respectively. This analytical method utilized only the cholesterol reference substance as an internal standard to quantify the content of cholesterol, lanosterol, and 24,25-dihydrolanosterol in industrial lanolin alcohol. It reduced the testing costs and enhanced efficiency, making it potentially suitable for widespread adoption in lanolin alcohol processing industries.

Nowadays, the Chlorination-Hercosett process dominates the production of machine-washable wool fabric. However, absorbable organic halogens (AOX) generated during the treatment are highly detrimental to human health and the environment. Herein, we developed an innovative pad-steam-pad-cold batch enzymatic treatment with the merit of being eco-friendly, water-saving, and cost-effective to replace traditional high pollution chlorination technique. With the assistance of sodium sulfite or L-cysteine, a broad-temperature-range proteinase (BTRP) can efficiently hydrolyze wool scales during the steaming and cold batch processes. The results indicate that BTRP treatment endows the wool fabric with excellent dimensional stability, acceptable strength loss, and improved wearability properties such as drapability, and air and moisture permeability. This non-chlorination treatment achieves a felting shrinkage of 4.33 % ± 0.28 %, and a tensile strength loss of 12.36 % ± 1.46 %. Furthermore, colored wool samples treated with BTRP were shown to maintain their original color performance, including K/S value and various color fastness properties. Pilot plant tests indicates that this technique remarkably decreased the cost of chemical materials and water usage during enzymatic treatment. As an ideal alternative substitute for the Chlorination-Hercosett treatment, the “pad-steam-pad-cold batch” approach based on BTRP treatment can be utilized for commercial production of pristine and colored machine-washable wool garments.

Chitosan, a natural biopolymer, is used as a multifunctional agent for modification of wool either through chemical crosslinking or physical coating. For the first time, wool fabric has been modified with chitosan through disulfide bond breaking and reforming reactions. The chitosan was thiolated and then grafted onto the reduced wool fibers through disulfide bonds. In order to understand the mechanism of the grafting of thiolated chitosan onto wool, glutathione was used as a model compound for wool in the research. The structures of thiolated chitosan reacted with glutathione and wool fabrics grafted with thiolated chitosan were investigated by FTIR, 13 CNMR, XPS, XRD, SEM. The dyeability, shrink-resistance and biocompatibility were also tested. The results suggested that glutathione reacted with thiolated chitosan and formed disulfide bond. The thiolated chitosan-grafted wool fabric had good shrink-resistance and dyeability. Hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties were also improved compared with untreated wool fabric. The results provide a novel approach for modification of wool through fiber-intrinsic groups like disulfide bonds.

The extraction of wool keratin protein (WK) from wool waste has garnered attention for its potential application in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and flexible pressure sensors, contributing to the efficient utilization of waste wool. Herein, we utilized biobased polylactic acid (PLA) as the polymer for electrospinning and incorporated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as conductive additives in the electrospinning solution. WK, extracted from waste wool via a reduction method, exhibited excellent dispersibility and stability of carbon nanotubes in the spinning solution, enabling the preparation of a highly sensitive resistive flexible pressure sensor. The results demonstrate that the PLA/WK/CNTs @CNTs flexible pressure sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 12.64 kPa–1 and a fast response/recovery time of 63 ms. Moreover, it possesses the lowest detection limit of 5.64 Pa, excellent stability over 6000 cycles, and good linearity within a wide working range (0–30 kPa), making it suitable for wearable biometric monitoring applications such as finger pressure, finger bending, and pulse monitoring, as well as visual interaction such as interactive blankets for infants. Therefore, we propose a high-quality wool waste utilization scheme, showcasing the potential application of discarded wool in smart living.

The particular scale structure and mechanical properties of wool fiber make its associated fabrics prone to felting, seriously affecting the service life of wool products. Although the existing Chlorine–Hercosett treatment has a remarkable effect, it can lead to environmental pollution. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop an environmentally friendly and effective shrink-proof finishing technology. For this study, L-cysteine was mixed with protease to form a treatment solution system for shrink-proof finishing of wool fibers. The reduction performance of L-cysteine and its effect on wool were compared with those of other reagents, demonstrating that L-cysteine has an obvious reduction and destruction effect on the wool scale layer. Based on this, L-cysteine and protease 16L were mixed in a certain proportion to prepare an L-cysteine/protease treatment solution system (L/PTSS). The shrink-proof finishing of a wool top was carried out by the continuous multiple-padding method, and the processing parameters were optimized using the response surface method. The results indicated that when the concentrations of L-cysteine and protease 16L were 9 g/L and 1 g/L, respectively, the wool was padded five times at 50 °C, and each immersion time was 30 s, the felt ball density of the treated wool reduced from 135.86 kg/m3to 48.65 kg/m3. The structure and properties of the treated wool were also characterized using SEM, TG, and tensile strength tests, which indicated that the fiber scale structure was stripped evenly. Meanwhile, the treated fibers still retained adequate thermal and mechanical properties, indicating suitable application value. XPS, FT-IR, Raman, UV absorbance, and other test results revealed the reaction mechanism of L/PTSS with the wool fibers. After L-cysteine rapidly reduced the disulfide bonds in wool, protease can hydrolyze peptide chains more effectively, causing the scale layer to gradually peel off. Compared with the chlorination method and other protease shrink-proof technologies, L/PTSS can achieve the finishing effect on wool rapidly and effectively, without causing excessive pollution to the environment. The conclusions of this study provide a foundation for the development and industrial application of biological enzyme shrink-proof finishing technology.Keywords:wool;shrink-proof finishing;protease;L-cysteine

Animal fibres are coloured using dyes to satisfy the individual needs; thus, dark animal fibres must be bleached. Compared with frequently used Fe 2+ -catalysed H 2 O 2 (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) bleaching, persulphate (PDS)/H 2 O 2 bleaching is advantageous owing to its high efficiency, low damage of fibre and environmental friendliness. Herein, different free radical species were precisely controlled by changing the pH of the PDS/H 2 O 2 solution and regulating the existence of NH 4 + . When NH 4 + was absent, sulphate radicals (·SO 4 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (·HO) could be produced at pH = 8–9 and superoxide anions (·O 2 − ) could be produced at pH = 10. In the presence of NH 4 + , ·SO 4 − and ·HO could be produced at pH = 8, and ·O 2 − was dominant in the solution when pH = 9–10. Black yak wool was used as the research object to demonstrate that the bleaching ability of the generated ·O 2 − was stronger than those of the generated ·SO 4 − and ·HO. Compared with that of the commercial product (prepared using Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 bleaching), the bleaching time of the decolourised yak wool was reduced by 83.33% (from 24 to 4 h) without the catalysis by heavy metal ions . Meanwhile, the whiteness of the decolourised yak wool (72.31%) was close to that of the commercial product (78.79%). Furthermore, the damage to the cuticle layer and cortex of yak wool was low after bleaching. The breaking strength of the decolourised yak wool was 1.79 cN·dtex −1 , which only decreased by 17.13% compared with that of raw yak wool. These results hold great potential in developing environmental-friendly bleaching methods for dark animal fibres with high efficiency and low damage.

Polymeric hydrogel based on acrylic acid (AA) andN,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) was prepared by photopolymerization reaction, using nano-alumina as the inorganic crosslinker. Hydrogel-coated wool yarns determine their dimensional changes under humidity conditions. Surface morphology of the hydrogel-coated wool yarns was carried out using SEM microscopy. The hydrogel was further characterized by Fourier transformer infrared spectrum (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermogravimetry (DTG). This contribution showed that UV-initiated polymerization coating wool yarns can change the functional properties of wool fibers. Keywords:hydrogel;wool yarns;photocrosslinking;UV polymerization

Microbial dyes have received substantial attention because of their natural environmental protection, simple access, and reduced regional and seasonal restriction. In this work, a microbial dye, the yellow pigment produced by Metarhizium anisopliae , was first studied then applied. The strain produced by the culture was identified, and the conditions for producing yellow pigment were optimised. Further, the stability of M. anisopliae yellow pigment was examined, and the pigment was applied to the dyeing of silk and wool fabrics. The results showed that the homology of the strain with M. anisopliae was 99.98%. In liquid fermentation culture, the optimal carbon source was glucose, and the dosage was 30 g/l. The maximum pigment yield can be obtained by culturing with 4% v/v of inoculation quantity at pH 7 and 30 °C. In addition, the effects of pH, temperature and metal ions on the yellow pigment of M. anisopliae were significant. The optimum dyeing process conditions were dyeing temperatures of 80 °C for silk and 90 °C for wool, with a dyeing time of 60 min. This research developed a novel microbial dye and studied its application for the dyeing of protein fibres.

The protease method of wool shrink-proofing finishing is challenging to apply industrially due to its low efficiency and prolonged treatment time. In this study, the activator P[(CH 2 ) n OH] 3 , n∈(1, 10) and protease Savinase 16 L were combined and used in the same bath to rapidly degrade wool scales to achieve the target of machine washable for wool. The activator significantly improved the degradation efficiency of 16 L on wool's high-sulfur scale tissue, reducing the wool shrink-proofing treatment time to 100 s. The treated wool samples' area shrinkage, strength, elasticity, length, fineness, and directional friction effect were evaluated. The results showed that the activator combined with Savinase 16 L could rapidly hydrolyze wool fiber scales, and the wool area shrinkage was 1.65 % without excessive damage to the original properties of wool fibers. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of wool scale degradation by protease and the activator was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the activator worked by activating the wool high-sulfur scale layer, thereby increasing the efficiency of the protease degradation of wool. It had no activating effect on the protease molecule. The activator opens the disulfide bonds on the wool scales while transforming the β-thinning and β-rotation in the scales to α-helix or random curling. It could promote protease adsorption and reaction on wool. Under pH 8.0 and 50℃, 2 g/L of activator could increase the adsorption of 16 L on wool by 12.7 times and increase the hydrolysis activity of 16 L on wool by 1575 times. After treatment with this technology, the content of -NH2, -COOH, and -SOx on the surface of wool was increased. Furthermore, a continuous multiple-padding wool shrink-proofing production line was designed, including a treatment liquid circulation and heat preservation systems. Stable industrial production applications were realized.

A novel flame retardant monomer DDPSi-FR containing organophosphorus and silicon was prepared using 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (HBA), and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The chemical structure of DDPSi-FR was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Subsequently, after treating the wool fabrics, the effects of the monomer on the flame retardancy, thermal stability, and mechanical properties were studied. The flame retardant and thermal properties were evaluated by conducting vertical flame tests, limiting oxygen index (LOI) determination, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that improved flame retardancy and thermal stability were achieved. Notably, the flame retardancy was retained even after 15 washing cycles. The mechanical properties were evaluated using the bursting strength, and the results indicated that DDPSi-FR treatment improved the breaking strength.

Enzymatic coloration of fabrics has received worldwide attention in recent years. In order to improve the dyeing properties of enzymatically coloured fabrics, a novel strategy using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), a biological coupling agent, to pretreat wool fabric was employed in this paper. Enzymatic coloration of wool fabrics with syringic acid was carried out in the presence of laccase from Trametes versicolor . The effect of different periods on laccase-catalysed polymerisation of syringic acid was examined by UV-vis spectroscopy. Enzymatic coloration results of dyed wool fabrics were evaluated by means of K / S value and colour difference ( ∆E* ). Process parameters, including the dosages of syringic acid and incubation time, that influenced the colour depth were studied. Meanwhile, the colour fastness and levelness of dyed wool fabrics were tested. The results showed that the UV-vis absorbance of reaction solution increased as oxidation time elapsed, and a new peak appeared at 360 nm. After pretreatment, the K / S values and colour difference values of wool fabrics dyed with poly(syringic acid) improved appreciably compared with the control samples without any pretreatment. Moreover, pretreated wool fabrics showed better dyeing fastness and levelness than control samples.

Savinase 16L as a type of mature protease for shrink-resist finishing can effectively hydrolyze wool scales, but it is also easy to penetrate into the cell membrane complex (CMC) layer, even easily causing undesired fiber damages. In this study, Savinase 16L was combinedly used with a protective agent of cyclamate, achieving an increase in the size of enzyme protein molecules through the intermolecular forces . This combined operation was intended to make it difficult for protease to enter the CMC layer, conferring protease a more concentrated actions towards wool scales. Meanwhile, a commercial keratinase was applied for wool pretreatment to loosen the structural integrity by hydrolyzing the disulfide bonds in wool scales. The combination use of hydrolase (20 U/mL of keratinase, and 6.5 U/mL protease) and 10 g/L cyclamate endowed the dyed wool fabric with encouraging shrink-resist property, achieving a felting shrinkage of 5.4% ± 0.55% with an acceptable strength loss of 12.3% ± 1.2%. More importantly, color hue of the wool fabric almost did not change compared with to that with chlorination method. As an eco-friendly and energy-saving strategy, it provides an efficient alternative for shrink-resist finishing of white and dyed wool fabrics, and expands the application of biotechnology in wool industry.
