In this study, oxidized chitosan grafted cashmere fibers (OCGCFs) were obtained by crosslinking the oxidized chitosan onto cashmere fibers by amide covalent modification. A novel method was developed for the selective oxidation of the C6 primary hydroxyls into carboxyl groups for chitosan. The effect of oxidization reaction parameters of HNO3/H3PO4–NaNO2mediated oxidation system on the oxidation degree, structure, and properties of chitosan were investigated. The chemical structure of the oxidized chitosan was characterized by solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (CP/MAS13C-NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and its morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subsequently, the effect of the oxidized chitosan grafting on OCGCF was examined, and the physical properties, moisture regain, and antibacterial activity of OCGCFs were also evaluated. The results showed that oxidation of chitosan mostly occurred at the C6 primary hydroxyl groups. Moreover, an oxidized chitosan with 43.5–56.8% carboxyl content was realized by ranging the oxidation time from 30 to 180 min. The resulting OCGCF had a C–N amido bond, formed as a result of the reaction between the primary amines in the cashmere fibers and the carboxyl groups in the oxidized chitosan through the amide reaction. The OCGCF exhibited good moisture regain and remarkable bacteriostasis against bothStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia colibacteria with its durability. Keywords:chitosan;cashmere fiber;oxidization;graft;antibacterial property

In this study, chitosan was modified by two kinds of different siloxanes, γ-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and γ-glycidoxypropyl-dimethoxy- methylsilane (GPDMS), respectively, then applied for anti-pilling of cashmere knitted fabrics. The structure of the modified chitosan, the apparent morphology and the mechanical properties of the modified film were analyzed by FTIR, SEM and DMA, respectively. The hydrophilicity and swelling properties of the modified film were compared. The results showed that epoxy groups of siloxane reacted with amino groups of chitosan, and the –OR (R represents alkyl) groups of siloxane hydrolyzed and polycondensation conducted during the film-forming process. After modification, the mechanical properties of the film were more flexible, the hydrophilicity and swelling of the film was decreased. Cashmere knitted fabric was treated with the modified chitosan and glutathione was chosen as the model compound to explore the reaction between modified chitosan and cashmere fibers. The apparent morphology and elements distribution of the fibers were observed by SEM and EDS, respectively. The directional friction effect of the fibers was tested by fiber friction coefficient tester. The pilling grade, handle, whiteness and launderability of fabric were investigated. The results showed that the epoxy groups remaining in siloxane were reacted with the amino groups of cashmere fiber, which enhance the binding of the fiber and siloxane-modified chitosan, the siloxane-modified chitosan film formed on fibers in situ. The directional friction effect of the fiber significantly reduced, the tendency of fuzzes to the surface of the fabric was weakened and the probability of tangling of exposed fuzzings was reduced, the pilling grade of the fabric treated by modified chitosan reached level 4 and the fabrics had good launderability, the soft and smooth handle was still preserved. There was no obvious color difference of cashmere fabrics treated with siloxane-modified chitosan.

Cashmere and wool are both natural animal fibers used in the textile industry, but cashmere is of superior quality, is rarer, and more precious. It is therefore important to distinguish the two fibers accurately and effectively. However, challenges due to their similar appearance, morphology, and physical and chemical properties remain. Herein, a terahertz electromagnetic inductive transparency (EIT) metasurface biosensor is introduced for qualitative and quantitative identification of cashmere and wool. The periodic unit structure of the metasurface consists of four rotationally symmetric resonators and two cross−arranged metal secants to form toroidal dipoles and electric dipoles, respectively, so that its effective sensing area can be greatly improved by 1075% compared to the traditional dipole mode, and the sensitivity will be up to 342 GHz/RIU. The amplitude and frequency shift changes of the terahertz transmission spectra caused by the different refractive indices of cashmere/wool can achieve highly sensitive label−free qualitative and quantitative identification of both. The experimental results show that the terahertz metasurface biosensor can work at a concentration of 0.02 mg/mL. It provides a new way to achieve high sensitivity, precision, and trace detection of cashmere/wool, and would be a valuable application for the cashmere industry.

Biogenic extracts are widely used in the food and cosmetic fields for their excellent health care benefits and biocompatibility. Here, to develop multifunctional health cashmere fiber, biological macromolecules (chitosan, sericin and collagen) are grafted onto the surface of ammonia plasma pretreated fibers using transglutamaminase and tyrosinase respectively as bridging agents. In grafting experiments, immersing and padding process is used. It is shown that the maximum grafting can be achieved in the condition of 45°C and pH=6.5 after 3h for transglutamaminase, and another optimal case is at 30°C, 24h and pH=6.0 for tyrosinase. After the functional modification four types of modified cashmere exhibits better inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli, especially for the chitosan-cashmere and sericin-cashmere. In addition, it is found that the strength and thermal degradation property of modified cashmere are improved, the whiteness and hand feel of chitosan-cashmere are reduced, and the dyeing properties of collagen-cashmere and silk-cashmere are not much changed apart from chitosan-cashmere.
