Mechanical property analysis and optimization of nano-hydroxyapatite coated carbon fiber reinforced hydroxyapatite composites

Xueni Zhao,Guowen Shi,Linlin Ma,Jinxin Guan,Zhipeng Zhu

Carbon fiber (CF) is one of ideal reinforcements to hydroxyapatite (HA) owing to its unique structure, excellent biocompatibility and high mechanical properties. However, the mechanical property of CF reinforced HA (CF/HA) composites cannot be effectively improved due to the mismatch in surface properties and thermal expansion coefficients between CF and HA. In order to solve the problems, nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) coating with different thickness was fabricated on the CF surface. The effect of the coating thickness on mechanical property of nHA-coated CF/HA composites was studied by finite element analysis. The CF with proper nHA coating thickness was subsequently used to reinforce HA. The compressive strength of nHA-coated CF/HA composites was approximately 97.3 % and 164.6 % higher than those of the uncoated CF/HA composites and pure HA ceramics, respectively. The interface properties and crack propagation were analyzed by cohesive element in the finite element analysis. The toughening mechanism of the composites included interfacial debonding, crack deflection, crack branching, and crack bridging. The mechanical properties of nHA-coated CF/HA composites were enhanced due to the strong interfacial bonding strength and reducing cracking in HA matrix. The prepared nHA-coated CF/HA composites satisfy the requirement of the mechanical properties of human load-bearing bone. It can be used to prepare cages, plates, screws, pins and other compact bone substitute parts in bone grafting. The study provided a method for construction of nHA-coated CF/HA composites with the designed properties by adjusting the nHA coating on the fiber and can be used to design other fibers reinforced ceramic matrix composites.

Highly efficient preparation of multi-angle continuous carbon fibre reinforced hydroxyapatite composites by electrostatic splitting method

Xueni Zhao,Mingyue Liu,Pengfei Wang,Jinxin Guan,Xianxian Wang

An electrostatic splitting device was self-designed and manufactured for highly efficient preparation of multi-angle continuous carbon fibre (CF)-reinforced ceramic-based composites and was used to prepare multi-angle continuous CF and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA)-coated CF reinforced HA composites with improved CF dispersion and content. The compressive strength of sintered [0°/90°] CF reinforced hydroxyapatite (CF/HA) composites is more than two and a half times that of hydroxyapatite and is superior to that of cortical bone (26.42–110.7%). Compared with hydroxyapatite, fracture toughness of [0°/0°], [0°/90°] and [− 45°/+ 45°] CF/HA composites increase by 28.83%, 66.32% and 115.95%, respectively. The strength and fracture toughness (30.2 MPa·m 1/2 ) of [− 45°/+ 45°] CF/HA bioceramics display synchronously improving. Micromechanical property and crack propagation process of the composites were simulated in depth. Based on optimised dispersion and arrangement of CF, the introduction of nHA coating enhances the mechanical properties of nHA-coated CF reinforced HA composites because nHA coating can block the generation and propagation of cracks.

3D-Printed Filters for Efficient Heavy Metal Removal from Water Using PLA@CS/HAP Composites

Yisu Wang,Yan Wang,Shuai Qiu,Chongyang Wang,Hong Zhang,Jing Guo,Shengfa Wang,Huixia Ma

Chitosan/Hydroxyapatite composites, enriched with relatively active -NH2and -OH groups, have emerged as promising adsorbents for heavy metal removal. In this study, we harnessed the potential of CS/HAP composites by developing monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters utilizing 3D printing and freeze-drying techniques. These filters possess both macroscopic and microscopic porous structures, endowing them with exceptional capabilities for removing heavy metals from water. The adsorption properties of CS/HAP composites were explored by varying the dosage, duration, and initial concentrations of copper ions. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu2+was determined to be approximately 119+/−1 mg/g at the natural pH and 298 K. Notably, the monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the removal of copper ions, with 90% of copper ions effectively removed within a mere 2-h period in a cyclic adsorption experiment. Furthermore, the PLA@CS/HAP filters exhibited a robust dynamic Cu2+removal capacity (80.8% or even better in less than 35 min) in a dynamic adsorption experiment. Importantly, all materials employed in this study were environmentally friendly. In summary, the PLA@CS/HAP filter offers advantages such as ease of preparation, eco-friendliness, versatility, and broad applicability in diverse wastewater treatment scenarios, thereby presenting a significant potential for practical implementation.Keywords:chitosan;hydroxyapatite;3D printing;adsorption

Research of Cu-Doped Hydroxyapatite Microbeads Fabricated by Pneumatic Extrusion Printing

Wenchao Chi,Jiawei Zou,Fanrong Ai,Yanjun Lin,Wenchao Li,Chuanliang Cao,Kang Yang,Kui Zhou

Copper is an indispensable micronutrient in human health, which has important effects on the promotion of angiogenesis and thus contributes to bone formation and antimicrobial activity. We used ion exchange and pneumatic printing methods to prepare hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres with different copper content. The microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Considering the resistance of hydroxyapatite to biodegradation in vivo, the degradation rate of microspheres in modified simulated body fluids was studied. In addition, cell proliferation and antibacterial experiments were carried out to study the biological properties of microspheres. HA-1.5MCu microbeads treated by 1.5 mol/L CuSO4curing solution have good performance on degradation, antibacterial properties and cell survival rate on day 7. The results showed that HA-1.5MCu microbeads may be used as a good repair material for bone defects. Keywords:hydroxyapatite;microbeads;copper;biological performance

Preparation and physicochemical properties of an injectable alginate-based hydrogel by the regulated release of divalent ions via the hydrolysis of d-glucono-δ-lactone

Xiaojun Sun,Zhaoyang Li,Zhenduo Cui,Shuilin Wu,Shengli Zhu,Yanqin Liang,Xianjin Yang

In this study, an injectable dopamine-modified alginate hydrogel combined with nano-hydroxyapatite or strontium hydroxyapatite was cross-linked via the in situ slow release of divalent ions from the hydrolysis of D-glucono-δ-lactone (GDL). The cross-linking mechanism involved the chelation of an alginate with divalent ions and the hydrogen-bonding interaction between alginate and catechol groups. As the GDL concentration at 0.5% (w/v) regulated the release of the divalent ions, which enhanced the chelation effect, it was investigated, and inorganic nanoparticles were homogeneously distributed into the hydrogel system to improve the mechanical properties and stabilize the hydrogel network. Furthermore, the effects of dopamine on the improvement of the mechanical properties were investigated. Results demonstrated that the compressive strength of this injectable hydrogel is enhanced by 4.6 times compared with that of the hydrogel without the addition of GDL, and the compressive strength is enhanced by 4.0 times compared with that of the unmodified alginate hydrogel at strain values ranging from 10% to 50%. The hydrogels combined with strontium hydroxyapatite exhibited a more compact, suitable pore size, with a three-dimensional network structure, and the particle size was 50–100 μm; this range of values is considered as optimal for the growth of bone tissues. In addition, the gelation time can be adjusted from a few minutes to a few seconds by adjusting experiment variables. Our study provides a potential method for improving the mechanical properties of bone tissue engineering materials. 1HNMR, FTIR, and UV–vis spectroscopy measurements; XRD and SEM; and pH, ion release, and mechanical tests were carried out.

Extraction of biocompatible hydroxyapatite from fish scales using novel approach of ionic liquid pretreatment

Nawshad Muhammad,Yanan Gao,Farasat Iqbal,Pervaiz Ahmad,Rile Ge,Umar Nishan,Abdur Rahim,Girma Gonfa,Zahoor Ullah

In this study the waste fish scales (FS) were dissolved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid to obtain a valuable product of hydroxyapatite (HAp). The HAp was obtained in the yield of 32   ±   2%. The obtained HAp was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Powder X-rays Diffraction (PXRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Field Emission Scanning Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). The results of FTIR and XRD showed the characteristic peaks of the HAp. The thermal degradation temperature of the extracted HAp was relatively high. Furthermore, low weight loss was measured which confirmed the removal of organic part of FS during ionic liquid treatment. The FE-SEM result showed the particles with different morphologies and EDX analysis showed a Ca/P ratio of 1.60 for the extracted HAp. The biocompatibility of the extracted HAp was assessed through MTT cell viability assay using known Human Embryonic Kidney 293 cells (HEK cells) and epidermoid carcinoma cells (A431 cells).

Cadmium removal from soil by fulvic acid-aided hydroxyapatite nanofluid

Qi Li,Xijuan Chen,Xin Chen,Yan Jin,Jie Zhuang

Mobile e ngineered nanoparticles have the potential for removing a variety of pollutants from contaminated soils. In this study, elution of soil cadmium (Cd) by nano hydroxyapatite (nHAP) suspension was investigated at different concentrations of fulvic acid (FA). The nHAP nanofluid (500 mg L −1 ) increased the elution rate of soil Cd by ∼4.34 times (from 0.64% to 2.78%) compared with nHAP-free background solution due to a ∼2 order of magnitude larger adsorption capacity of Cd on nHAP than on the experimental loamy soil. FA played an indispensable role in the efficient removal of Cd by nHAP from the soil. The elution rate of soil Cd increased from 2.78% to 3.31%, 4.37%, 5.45%, and 8.46% after adding 20, 100, 200, and 500 mg L −1 of FA to the nHAP nanofluid (500 mg L −1 ), respectively. This linear facilitation (i.e., addition of each 100 mg L −1 of FA increased Cd elution by ∼1%) is attributed to FA-enhanced nHAP mobility and FA-strengthened Cd transfer from soil to nHAP. This study suggests that flushing with the environment-friendly, cost-effective, and FA-containing nHAP nanofluid can effectively remove Cd from soil, given that leachate could be collected by subsurface drainage tiles.

3D Printing and Property of Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite Scaffold

Xueni Zhao,Lingna Li,Yu Zhang,Zhaoyang Liu,Haotian Xing,Zexin Gu

The 3D printing of a biomimetic scaffold with a high hydroxyapatite (HA) content (>80%) and excellent mechanical property is a serious challenge because of the difficulty of forming and printing, insufficient cohesion, and low mechanical property of the scaffold. In this study, hydroxyapatite whiskers (HAWs), with their superior mechanical property, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, were used to reinforce spherical HA scaffolds by 3D printing. The compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of HAW-reinforced spherical HA (HAW/HA) scaffolds increased when the HAW/HA ratio increased from 0:10 to 4:6 and then dropped with any further increases in the HAW/HA ratio. Bioceramic content (HAWs and spherical HA) in the scaffolds reached 83%, and the scaffold with a HAW/HA ratio of 4:6 (4-HAW/HA) exhibited an optimum compressive strength and energy absorption capacity. The scaffold using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an additive possessed a good bonding between HA and PVA as well as a higher strength, which allowed the scaffold to bear a higher stress at the same strain. The compressive strength and toughness of the 4-HAW/HA-PVA scaffold were 1.96 and 1.63 times that of the 4-HAW/HA scaffold with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), respectively. The mechanical property and inorganic components of the biomimetic HAW/HA scaffold were similar to those of human bone, which would make it ideal for repairing bone defects.

Ultralight and Flexible Subnanowire Aerogels for Intrinsically Hydrophobic Thermal Insulation

Yuhan Sheng,Yi Zhang,Zhifang Sun

Aerogels are regarded as the next generation of thermal insulators; however, conventional aerogels suffer from issues such as brittleness, low moisture resistance, and a complex production process. Subnanowires (SNWs) are emerging materials known for their exceptional flexibility, toughness, intrinsic hydrophobicity, and gelling capabilities, making them ideal building blocks for flexible, tough, hydrophobic, and thermally insulating aerogels. Herein, we present a simple and scalable strategy to construct SNW aerogels by freeze-drying hydroxyapatite (HAP) SNW dispersions in cyclohexane. The resulting aerogels consist of three-dimensional porous flakes composed of thin layers of SNW bundles. They exhibit numerous outstanding properties, including ultralow density (12.33 mg·cm–3), high porosity (99.15%), remarkable flexibility and toughness, and excellent thermal insulation properties (27.53 mW·m–1·K–1). Because the HAP SNWs consist of hydroxyapatite cores capped with hydrocarbon chains, the aerogels demonstrate intrinsic hydrophobicity (138° water contact angle) and superior thermal stability compared to polymer foams. Furthermore, the HAP SNW aerogels can effectively shield against infrared radiation due to their low thermal conductivity. This work suggests that SNWs can serve as superior building blocks for flexible, tough, and intrinsically hydrophobic aerogels, paving the way for future applications in thermal insulation.

Interpenetrated Multinetwork Hybrid Aerogels by Layered Montmorillonite and One-Dimensional Hydroxyapatite Fibers for Heat and Fire Insulation

Yang Chen,Wei Guo,Shudong Zhang,Jixiang Zhang,Huan Xu,Nian Li,Xiaolin Meng,Min Xi,Cui Liu,Zhenyang Wang

It is of practical significance to develop aerogels with effective thermal insulation characteristics together with fireproof properties as well as high mechanical strength. Here, an interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogel realizing thermal insulation, flame retardancy, and high compression modulus is demonstrated. Specifically, one-dimensional hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAP) played dual roles as the aerogel support skeleton to entangle with layered montmorillonite (MMT) each other to form a three-dimensional interpenetrated multinetwork structure and to optimize the thermal conductivity by adjusting the pore space in current HAP/MMT/PVA hybrid aerogels. Therefore, the interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogels exhibit superior thermal insulation performance in room temperature (0.033 W m–1 K–1, 298 K, air conditions) and largely enhanced ultrahigh compression modulus (80 MPa). Moreover, the obtained hybrid aerogels also exhibit excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguishing smoke suppression properties (peak heat release rate and total smoke production as low as 92.44 kW m–2 and 0.1 m2, respectively), which is the outstanding interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogel that has achieved synergistic improvement in heat and fire insulation and mechanical performance. Therefore, the interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogels are promising candidates for efficient heat insulation, fire prevention, and mechanically robust applications.

Efficient Generation of Lactic Acid from Glycerol over a Ru-Zn-CuI/Hydroxyapatite Catalyst

Zhiwei Jiang,Zhanrong Zhang,Tianbin Wu,Pei Zhang,Jinliang Song,Chao Xie,Buxing Han

Graphical Adding value : A Ru-Zn-Cu I catalyst supported on hydroxyapatite (HAP) was applied for the conversion of glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, to lactic acid (see scheme). Cu I inhibits C−C bond cleavage and thus improved the yield of lactic acid in this system. The biodiesel production process generates a significant amount of glycerol as a byproduct. A drive to add value has attracted worldwide attention, with the aim of improving the overall effectiveness and profitability of biodiesel production. Herein, we report hydroxyapatite (HAP)-supported Ru-Zn-Cu I (Ru-Zn-Cu I /HAP) as effective catalysts for the transformation of glycerol to lactic acid (LA).The catalysts were characterized by using different techniques. The effects of catalyst composition, reaction time, and temperature on the conversion and product distribution were investigated. It was revealed that Ru nanoparticles of less than 2 nm were dispersed uniformly on HAP. Cu I could effectively inhibit the cleavage of C−C bonds, which led to improved yields of LA. Under optimized conditions, the yield of LA could reach 70.9 % over Ru-Zn-Cu I /HAP. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused at least four times without an obvious loss of activity or selectivity.

Hydroxyapatite/Collagen Three-Dimensional Printed Scaffolds and Their Osteogenic Effects on Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Qing Li,Xiongxin Lei,Xiaofei Wang,Zhigang Cai,Peijun Lyu,Guifeng Zhang

Three-dimensional (3D) printing provides a novel approach to repair bone defects using customized biomimetic tissue scaffolds. To make a bone substitute closest to natural bone structure and composition, two different types of hydroxyapatite, Nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) and deproteinized bovine bone (DBB), were dispersed into collagen (CoL) to prepare the bioink for 3D printing. In doing so, a porous architecture was manufactured with 3D printing technology. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were evaluated, including biocompatibility and effect on the osteogenic differentiation of the human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs). The XPS, XRD, FTIR, and the mechanical analysis of the material indicated that the two HA were consistent in their elements, but different in their chemical bonds and crystal phases. The SEM results showed the different surface morphologies of the HA crystals as well as the scaffolds, which would be the main factors affecting the internal porous structure of the scaffold. There were no differences between the two composite scaffolds in cell proliferations. FITC-phalloidin/vinculin/DAPI staining indicated that hBMSCs can adhere well to the 3D-printed surfaces. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining reflected ALP expressed on both of the osteogenic-induction medium (OM) group, but not on proliferation medium (PM) group. The real-time polymerase chain reaction results showed the expression levels of osteogenesis-related genes RUNX2, SOX9, OCN, and COL1A1 in OM group were significantly increased after 7 days compared with the PM group (p < 0.01). The expression of SOX9, OCN, and COL1A1 in nHA/CoL scaffolds was higher than that in CoL scaffolds (p < 0.05). The expression of OCN and COLIA1 in DBB/CoL scaffolds was higher than that in CoL scaffolds (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the physicochemical and biological properties of 3D bioprinted scaffolds consisting of nHA/CoL or DBB/CoL would be well suited for the scaffolds to being a porous customized bone substitute, 3D printing scaffolds would be a prospective candidate for clinical application in future.Impact StatementBone loss due to trauma, inflammation, and surgical processes has posed great difficulty in the aesthetic reconstruction of a functional alveolar bone. Tissue engineering and biomaterials, which can promote alveolar bone regeneration, have become a popular focus of current studies. Three-dimensional (3D) printing provides a novel approach to repair bone defects using customized biomimetic tissue scaffolds. Nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) and deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) are two materials mainly used in clinical practice, particularly DBB are widely used in dentistry and craniomaxillofacial orthosis because of the porosity characteristic. To make a bone substitute closest to natural bone structure and composition, nHA and DBB were dispersed into collagen (CoL) to prepare the bioink for 3D printing. The physicochemical and biological properties between the two 3D printing scaffolds were compared. Both nHA/CoL and DBB/CoL 3D printing scaffold would be promising candidate for the clinical applications in the future.
