Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread pollutants from incomplete combustion of organic materials, linked to various health issues and pregnancy complications. This study explored the relationship between PAH metabolites and gestational hypertension. Urine samples from 118 normal pregnant women and 40 with gestational hypertension were analyzed. In vitro experiments using human trophoblast cells (HTR-8/SVneo) exposed to these metabolites assessed their effects on cellular metabolism. Comprehensive metabolomics analysis was performed using Tidymass and DRomics to integrate global and dose-response metabolomics data. Results showed higher levels of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPYR) and 9-Hydroxyphenanthrene (9-OHPHE) linked to gestational hypertension, inhibiting trophoblast cell invasion and migration. Identified markers include Isobutyryl-L-carnitine, methyl-3-hydroxybutyric acid, threonine, and glutamic acid for 1-OHPYR, and phosphocreatine for 9-OHPHE. This study highlights the connection between PAH metabolites and gestational hypertension, suggesting potential biomarkers and mechanisms. Future research should confirm these findings and explore prevention and treatment strategies.
Rhodococcus sp. WB9, a strain isolated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminated soil, degraded phenanthrene (PHE, 100 mg L −1 ) completely within 4 days. 18 metabolites were identified during PHE degradation, including 5 different hydroxyphenanthrene compounds resulted from multiple routes of initial monooxygenase attack. Initial dioxygenation dominantly occurred on 3,4-C positions, followed by meta -cleavage to form 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1H2N). More than 95.2% of 1H2N was transported to and kept in extracellular solution without further degradation. However, intracellular 1H2N was converted to 1,2-naphthalenediol that was branched to produce salicylate and phthalate. Furthermore, 131 genes in strain WB9 genome were related to aromatic hydrocarbons catabolism, including the gene coding for salicylate 1-monooxygenase that catalyzed the oxidation of 1H2N to 1,2-naphthalenediol, and complete gene sets for the transformation of salicylate and phthalate toward tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Metabolic and genomic analyses reveal that strain WB9 has the ability to metabolize intracellular 1H2N to TCA cycle intermediates, but the extracellular 1H2N can’t enter the cells, restricting 1H2N bioavailability and PHE mineralization.

Microplastics loaded with phenanthrene and derivatives are widely detected in aquatic environments, and the coating of natural minerals or organic macromolecules may change the environmental behavior of microplastics. In this study, three kinds of composites with different coverage were prepared by coating goethite on the surface of polyvinyl chloride microplastics to investigate the adsorption and desorption behavior of phenanthrene (PHE) and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-OHPHE), and the effect of mucin on desorption was investigated. The results showed that goethite promoted the adsorption of PHE and 1-OHPHE by increasing the specific surface area of the composites. With the increase of the cover degree, the adsorption of PHE decreased because of the decrease in hydrophobicity; while the adsorption of 1-OHPHE initially increased and then decreased with the contributions of hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond. The adsorption of 1-OHPHE could be influenced by the pH and ionic strength primarily through electrostatic interactions and Ca 2+ bridging. The goethite significantly increased the desorption hysteresis for two chemicals due to the complicated pore structures and increased adsorption affinity. Mucin promoted the desorption of PHE through competitive adsorption, and inhibit the desorption of 1-OHPHE through hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and Ca 2+ bridging. This study elucidated the effects of natural minerals on the adsorption and desorption behavior of organic pollutants on microplastics, briefly discussed the effects of organic macromolecules on the desorption behavior of pollutants with different properties, and emphasized the different environmental behaviors of pollutants.
