Enhancement of oxidation and corrosion resistance of flaky carbonyl‑iron powder via SiO2/KH560/PDMS coating applied with sol-gel

Linbo Zhang,Weihong Wan,Xianyu Jiang,Bo Wang,Liangjun Yin,Simeon Agathopoulos,Jiangliang Xie,Li Zhang,Haipeng Lu,Longjiang Deng

The popular magnetic material of flaky carbonyl iron (FCI) is unfortunately vulnerable to electrochemical corrosion when exposed to a salty and foggy environment. This work reports on a sol-gel method that successfully modifies FCI particles, using lithium silicate (Li 2 SiO 3 ), poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS), and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560), to synthesize Fe@SiO 2 @KH560@PDMS hybrid composite, related to its organic–inorganic hybrid coatings. The favorable hydrophobicity of organic–inorganic hybrid coatings with the static contact angle of 120° impeded the contact between corrosive medium and FCI core. The results of electrochemical experiments also confirmed its excellent corrosion resistance , since the corrosion potential E corr was positively shifted to 0.01 V, and the corrosion current I corr was three orders of magnitude lower than that of the unmodified FCI particles. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicates that the presence of hybrid coatings also improved the thermal stability of the produced material towards oxidation . Furthermore, the results of molecular dynamics simulation reveal that the hybrid layer inhibits the diffusion of corrosive medium.

Ecofriendly and cost-effective composites of titanium slag and carbonyl iron for lightweight and tunable microwave absorption

Qikui Man,Xueheng Zhuang,Zhenkuang Lei,Shiqi Zhu,Lining Pan,Yu Gao,Guoguo Tan

For obtaining the ecofriendly microwave absorbing composites, flake carbonyl iron was mixed to the flotation carbon waste of titanium slag by ball-milling processes. The composites of 4 h ball-milling present excellent microwave absorbing performance of minimum reflected loss (RL) of −54.9 dB at 7.8 GHz with thickness of 2.6 mm. The same composites provide the performance of RL < −10 dB with the thickness from 1.2 mm to 5 mm at corresponding matching frequency from 3.3 GHz to 18 GHz. It means that the absorbing peak can be tunable at the wide frequency range with only adjusting the thickness. The strong absorbing intensity and wide tunable frequency range are attributed to the proper impedance matching of dielectric property from flotation carbon waste of titanium slag and magnetic property from carbonyl iron. Also, this work provides a research approach for handling industrial waste which contains carbon.

Weiwei Qi,Lan Xiang,Mingqiang Ning,Tao Liu,Yuanyuan Li,Xueheng Zhuang,Ganggang Lv,Qiang Wu,Guoguo Tan,Qingzheng Jiang,Qikui Man,Baogen Shen

With the increasing requirements of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption, developing EMW absorbers with high-efficiency anti-corrosion performance which can be effectively applied in extreme corrosive environments is imperative and constitutes a hot issue in the current research. Herein, based on the composition modulation of ZrO 2 and SiO 2 layer, the dual-oxides confined carbonyl iron (CI@ZrO 2 /SiO 2 ) composite displays a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −48.58  [email protected]  mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.62  [email protected]  mm. Besides, the CI@ZrO 2 /SiO 2 displays superior corrosion resistance with corrosion current density ( i corr ) of 8.62 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 and polarization resistance ( R p ) of 3.64×10 5  Ω. This work proposes a strategy to optimize the broadband EMW absorption properties as well as the mass production toward the corrosion resistance applications.

Multimaterial 3D-printing barium titanate/carbonyl iron composites with bilayer-gradient honeycomb structure for adjustable broadband microwave absorption

Ping Gong,Yan Li,Chenxing Xin,Qiaoyu Chen,Liang Hao,Qinglei Sun,Zheng Li

An effective method to fabricate barium titanate (BTO)/carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composites with enhanced microwave absorption (MA) performance was prepared via multimaterial digital optical processing (DLP) 3D printing technique. The bilayer-gradient honeycomb structural absorber (BGHSA) with adjustable broadband can be obtained by leveraging of varying compositional and structural design (layered thickness ratios , and gradient structures). The optimal reflection loss ( R L ) value and effective bandwidth of BGHSA can reach −51 dB and 15.4 GHz, respectively, exhibiting a distinct improvement ( R L increased by 32.4% and effective bandwidth by 42.9%) compared with the reference. The highly improved performances especially in the broadband absorption (15.4 GHz) were mainly attributed to the better impedance matching and waves multi-reflections. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate functionally graded materials for potential application in the absorption of electromagnetic waves .

Yuxin Zuo,Xinran Su,Xinwei Li,Zhengjun Yao,Tingting Yu,Jintang Zhou,Jing Li,Jiong Lu,Jun Ding

Impedance matching and enhanced microwave attenuation have been proven to be effective strategies for improving reflection loss (R L ) and widening of the effective absorption (R L  < −10 dB) bandwidth of absorbers. Herein, we present novel multimaterial bilayer absorbing composites consisting of graphene/Li 0.35 Zn 0.3 Fe 2.35 O 4 /polymethyl methacrylate (GFP) as the matching layer and graphene/carbonyl iron powder/polymethyl methacrylate (GIP) as the absorption layer via our multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing method. Through numerical calculations, microwave absorption performance of the bilayer absorber is found to be greatly enhanced as compared to its constituents. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth can be also tuned via differing ratios of the GFP/GIP layer thicknesses under a fixed total thickness. A GFP/GIP bilayer of 1.4/2.6 mm was optimized based on R L . Experimented maximum R L peaks of −46.1 and −17.9 dB were revealed at frequencies of 4.7 and 15.7 GHz, respectively, with effective absorption bandwidth up to 3.5 GHz (4.15–5.35, 14.7–17.0 GHz). The microwave absorption performance of the GFP  + GIP bilayer absorber is significantly improved by proper impedance matching and multiple-type loss forms. Overall this work provides a new strategy to manufacture efficient, broadband, and adjustable microwave absorbers by 3D printing .

Efficiently enhanced microwave absorption of oriented flaky carbonyl iron&MoS2/polyurethane composite with thin thickness

Ying Zhai,Dongmei Zhu,Qiang Chen,Hanyi Nan

Herein, we report a novel multi-component electromagnetic microwave absorber with oriented flaky carbonyl iron&MoS 2 (FCI&MoS 2 ) as fillers and polyurethane (PU) as matrix. The SEM and VNA were utilized to analyze the morphology, electromagnetic and microwave absorption properties of the prepared oriented FCI&MoS 2 /PU composites with different multi-component proportions. The reflection loss (RL) and Z in /Z 0 values are calculated based on the complex permittivity and permeability. The results demonstrate that the oriented arrangement, synergistic effect and appropriate proportion of FCI&MoS 2 fillers are contributed to improve the impedance matching and microwave attenuation of the prepared composites at thin thicknesses of 0.8 mm and 0.9 mm.

Yang Zhang,Xingwei Wang,Shuangshuang Yang,Chuanpeng Li,Tao Dong,Qiangliang Yu

The magnetic microwave absorption (MA) materials are prone to corrosion in high temperature and high humidity environments, leading to a deterioration in the MA performance, so, the development of composite coatings with comprehensive properties such as excellent absorption performance, corrosion resistance , and oxidation resistance holds significant importance in the field of stealth technology. In this study, a core-shell structure MA materials titanium dioxide coated carbonyl iron particle (CIP@TiO 2 ) was prepared and utilized as a filler in the preparation of composite coatings. The results show that the low-frequency impedance modulus of composite coating improves by three orders of magnitude from 4.5 × 10 5  Ω cm 2 to 2.5 × 10 8  Ω cm 2 , demonstrating outstanding corrosion resistance. The TiO 2 shell not only improves CIP's electromagnetic parameters but also optimizes the impedance matching of the composite material. The CIP@TiO 2 coating achieves a minimum reflection loss of −56.8 dB at a thickness of 1.2 mm and an effective bandwidth of 6.57 GHz at a thickness of 0.6 mm, demonstrating excellent absorption performance. This study provides a novel approach for preparing composite materials with superior corrosion-resistant and absorptive properties.

Investigating the Effect of Carbonyl Iron Powder Doping on the Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Soft Magnetic Composites

Yang Liu,Rui Wang,Kaixuan Li,Ran Chen,Zhaoyang Wu,Yang Li

This study proposes the thermal decomposition of salt compounds and doping of carbonyl iron powders (CIPs) to optimize the preparation of an insulating layer through the solid-phase interface reaction. First, (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnSO4composite powders were synthesized using the hydrothermal method and (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3SMCs with a ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3composite insulation layer were prepared through heat treatment and cold pressing. The effect of the CIP doping content on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3SMCs were then investigated. During the heat treatment, ZnSO4decomposed into solid ZnO and gaseous SO2and O2. The O2drives the solid-phase reaction, prompting the migration of nonmagnetic Si and Cr atoms from the interior of the Fe–Si–Cr soft magnetic powder to the surface insulation layer, finally forming the ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3insulation layer. The doped CIPs also show good plasticity during the coating process, combining with the coating layer to fill the internal pores of SMCs. Moreover, as the particles are small with a high surface area, they increase the number of reaction sites for ZnSO4decomposition and facilitate the growth of the composite insulation layer, promoting its uniform distribution on the surfaces of the soft magnetic powders and CIPs. The lattice mismatch between the insulation layer and soft magnetic powder is reduced while the magnetic-phase content is increased, allowing the effective doping of CIPs sin the insulation layer. The magnetic properties of SMCs can be precisely regulated by changing the doping amount of CIPs. Unlike other insulating layer–preparation strategies based on the interfacial solid-phase reaction, the proposed method exploits the high plasticity and specific surface area of CIPs and removes the lattice mismatch between the insulation layer and soft magnetic powder.

Kim Jong Kyu,Yeo Wooseok,Joo Jin Chul

Among the various radioactive materials, Cesium is a major source of radioactive contamination and known to be the most dangerous radioactive material, can cause enormous damage to the ecosystem environment when released into the environment. Prussian Blue (PB) has been used as an adsorbent to effectively remove cesium, however it has the problem of being difficult to separate in water. In this study, carbonyl iron (CI) which is known as ferromagnetic synthesized with precursor of PB (FeCl3 and potassium ferricyanide) to solve the problem of PB particles. Adsorption isotherm experiments were also conducted to evaluate the cesium removal ability of the manufactured novel composites. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the novel composite has a cesium removal rate of 99.88% and a distribution coefficient value of 124,900 mL/g. Adsorption behavior follows Langmuir isotherms and the maximum adsorption amount is (qm ) 79.3 mg/g. In conclusion, Nano-sized Prussian blue with carbonyl Iron prepared through this study has excellent cesium removal capacity, and it can be completely separated from water when used directly in the cesium treatment field.

Effect of Ball-Milling Process on Microwave Absorption Behaviors of Flaky Carbonyl Iron Powders

Siyuan Yang,Fei Wang,Zhe Zhang,Zhiming Liu,Jiliang Zhang,Kaiyong Jiang

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption performance is greatly affected by the microscopic morphology of the absorbing material particles. In this study, a facile and efficient ball-milling method was applied to increase the aspect ratio of particles and prepare flaky carbonyl iron powders (F-CIPs), one of the most readily commercially available absorbing materials. The effect of ball-milling time and rotation speed on the absorption behaviors of the F-CIPs was investigated. The microstructures and compositions of the F-CIPs were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The EM parameters were measured using a vector network analyzer (VNA) in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz. The results indicated that the ball-milled flaky CIPs exhibited a better absorption ability than the raw spherical CIPs. Among all the samples, the sample milled at 200 r/min for 12 h and the sample milled at 300 r/min for 8 h showed remarkable EM parameters. The ball-milling sample with 50 wt.% F-CIPs had a minimum reflection loss peak of −14.04 dB at a thickness of 2 mm and a maximum bandwidth (RL < −7 dB) of 8.43 GHz at a thickness of 2.5 mm, a result that conformed with the transmission line theory. Hence, the ball-milled flaky CIPs were considered to be beneficial for microwave absorption. Keywords:carbonyl iron powders;absorption performance;ball-milling time;ball-milling rotation speed;electromagnetic parameters

Carbonyl iron/graphite microspheres with good impedance matching for ultra-broadband and highly efficient electromagnetic absorption

Zilong Zhang,Xiqiao Chen,Zilin Wang,Liuyang Heng,Shuai Wang,Zhixiang Tang,Yanhong Zou

Composite microspheres with carbonyl iron cores and graphite shells are prepared by a mechanical ball milling method. The microwave absorption properties of these microspheres are investigated in terms of complex permittivity and permeability, impedance matching property, and reflection loss. The morphology and conductivity of the graphite can be well tuned by controlling the milling time to achieve the improvement in its impedance matching characteristics. In addition, by integration of the composition and unique structure, the carbonyl iron/graphite microspheres possess better absorption properties than milling graphite. The microspheres show highly strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption with a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −55.2 dB, which could be attributed to the good impedance matching and effective complementarities between magnetic and dielectric components. More importantly, the qualified frequency bandwidth of the absorber is up to 9.7GHz (8.3-18GHz) with a matching thickness of 2.1mm. The results indicate that carbonyl iron/graphite microspheres may be excellent candidate materials for EMW absorption applications.

Hydrophobic enhancement of flaky carbonyl iron for superior corrosion resistance in electromagnetic wave absorbing coatings

Wenqian Wang,Fanya Jin,Jingke Pei,Fuzhen Qu,Yumin Zhang,Ye Zheng,Honglei Chang,Yadong Lv

The rapid advancement of electromagnetic technologies and the growing threats of interference highlight the urgent need for the development of robust electromagnetic wave absorbing (EWA) coatings to safeguard critical systems and ensure environmental safety. However, their effectiveness is often limited by poor corrosion and aging resistance. To enhance the durability of these coatings, we developed an epoxy (EP)-based coating using fluorinated flaky carbonyl iron powder (F-FCI) as the absorbing filler. Hydrophobic F-FCI particles were synthesized using perfluoro-decyl trimethoxy-silane (PFDTMS) to effectively block corrosive ions. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the fluorinated layer significantly improved the corrosion resistance while remained decent electromagnetic wave absorption properties of FCI. We further evaluated the performance of EP/FCI and EP/F-FCI coatings under salt spray corrosion tests, finding that the EP/F-FCI coating exhibited minimal structural changes and color differences while maintaining strong hydrophobic performance during aging. These results indicate that incorporating F-FCI particles substantially enhances the corrosion resistance and service stability of EWA coatings.
