Currently, fire warning sensors utilizing nanomaterials gained attention in research and development sectors. Among these, graphene oxide (GO)-based sensors stand out for their promising features in fire detection systems. However, GO sensors still suffer from poor durability, short-alarming time and poor solvent resistance. In this study, GO is modified with melamine diborate (M·2B) and incorporated into aramid nanofibers (ANFs) to develop GO-MB@ANFs nanopaper via mechanical mixing followed by vacuum-assisted filtration self-assembly. ANFs cross-linked graphene oxide sheets within a 3D scaffold while M·2B plays a critical role in enhancing flame retardancy of GO-based nanopaper. GO-MB@ANFs nanopaper features tensile strength of 132.3 MPa and toughness of 837 MJ/m³ in comparison with 10 MPa and 2 MJ/m³ for pure GO-based nanopaper. The GO-MB@ANFs nanopaper demonstrated remarkable flame resistance; it can endure direct exposure to an alcohol flame for 120 s with exceptional thermal stability. Additionally, it showed excellent features as a fire-warning sensor; GO-MB@ANFs exhibited a rapid response time of 0.73 s and an extended alarm duration exceeding 1260 s at 300 °C. Moreover, the supramolecular cross-linking of M·2B and ANFs endowed the GO nanopaper with excellent solvent resistance, maintaining its integrity even under harsh acidic and alkaline environments such as H₂SO₄, NaOH, and NaCl. The current study provides a new strategy for developing a robust, durable and cost-effective GO-based fire alarm sensor for diverse applications in construction and transportation industry.

Silicon side chain modification is an effective way for improving solvent resistance of one-component polysulfide adhesives, but the introduction of silicon side chains decreases hydrogen bonding interactions, leading to some reduction in initial mechanical properties. Based on the silicon modification, inserting more hydrogen bonding sites into a system is a viable approach to solving the above problems. In this work, a series of novel silicon side chain-modified one-component polysulfide adhesives (Sis-OCPSs) were successfully prepared using chain extenders in different proportions: 1,4-butanedithiol (BSO) and 1,3-bis(trimethylsilyl)urea (BSU). As expected, the CO groups and dual silicon side chains in BSU provide more active sites and silicon content, effectively reinforcing mechanical properties and solvent resistance. The optimal overall performance was obtained when the mass ratio of BSO and BSU was 8 : 1. Compared to silane side chain modification (Si-OCPS3) and before modification (Sis-OCPS0), Sis-OCPS3 exhibited the highest tensile strength, elongation and shear strength of 23.75 ± 0.34 MPa, 439.03% and 4.72 ± 0.27 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the tensile strength of Sis-OCPS3 could still reach 20.86 ± 0.29 MPa and 19.04 ± 0.27 MPa after immersion in oil and water for 21 d. We believe our paradigm can offer a feasible approach for designing high-performance one-component polysulfide adhesives.

Flexographic printing plates, which are typically composed of a metal substrate, an adhesive layer, and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) photosensitive layer, are essential for achieving high-resolution patterns in flexographic printing technology. The adhesive layer, serving as the bonding interface between the metal and PVA layers, must exhibit strong adhesion to both metal and polymer surfaces, along with high toughness, mechanical strength, solvent resistance, and durable adhesion to meet the mechanical and chemical requirements of flexographic printing technology. Herein, inspired by the structure of mussel foot silk protein, this study integrates carbon–carbon double bonds, catechol, alcohol hydroxyl, and amino ester groups into a single polymer chain via a two-step reaction. Benefits to its rigid-flexible cross-linked network, the obtained adhesive exhibits good strength, modulus, and toughness. Specifically, its tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and impact strength are 1.70 MPa, 0.85 GPa, 19.3 %, and 2.97 kJ/m 2 , respectively. Furthermore, the adhesive achieves a 180° peel strength of 2.26 N/mm with tinplate and 3.89 N/mm with flexographic printing plates. Notably, after 7 days of immersion in water, ethanol, and dimethylformamide, the 180° peel strength retention rate was as high as 96.9 %, 96.2 %, and 93.9 %, respectively. After being stored at room temperature for 28 days, the 180° peel strength retention rate reaches up to 98.3 %, highlighting its long-lasting durability. This mussel-inspired group integration strategy provides a straightforward and efficient approach for developing high-performance multi-functional adhesives, with significant potential for advancing flexographic printing.

Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) have become the preferred alternative for researchers aiming to replace solvent/emulsion-based resins in carbon fiber (CF) coatings, owing to their superior adhesion, eco-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, conventional polyester-based WPUs have often exhibited inadequate mechanical properties, thermal stability, and solvent resistance. To tackle these limitations, modified WPUs were developed by incorporating alkyl long chains, benzene π–π bond stacking, aromatic ring ether bonds, and biphenyl groups into the molecular structure through the functionalization of the polymerization system with 1,7-hexanediol, ethoxylated bisphenol A, and 1,3/1,4-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene. The inclusion of these comonomers optimized the properties of the WPUs with significant increases in thermal weight loss temperature T5% and tensile strength of 23.4% and 53.1%, respectively. The utilization of WPUs as coatings proved to be highly effective in enhancing the chemical activity, wettability, and mechanical properties of CF. The application of the coating resulted in a substantial improvement, with a 58.2% increase in the fiber surface energy and a 21.5% enhancement in the filament tensile strength, reaching values of 54.1 mN/m and 6.053 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, the WPUs exhibited the capability of rectifying defects in CF and enhancing surface roughness. Importantly, the tensile properties of WPUs-CF exceeded those of numerous established counterparts globally, highlighting a broad spectrum of potential applications.

Self-repairable polymers with dynamic covalent bonds (e.g., disulfide bonds) are of interest because of their potential to extend tenure. Polyurethane, known for its tunable mechanical properties and versatility, has been explored for self-healing applications. However, self-healing polyurethane often faces compromise between mechanical strength, scratch/solvent resistance, and self-healing efficiency, especially where colorless transparency is required. This study addresses these limitations by synthesizing a micro-crosslinked polyurethane urea (mc-PUU) using polycarbonate diol as soft segments, isophorone diisocyanate as hard segments, cystamine dihydrochloride as chain extender, and a small amount of 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)cyanuric acid as crosslinker. The structure and properties of mc-PUU are investigated. The results show that compared with linear PUU, the mc-PUU maintains colorless transparency (light transmittance), good tensile strength (58.5 ± 1.6 MPa), and elongation at break (470.7 ± 17.4%), toughness (145.1 ± 7.2 MJ/m 3 ), and self-healing efficiency (70.7% tensile strength recovery, 80.4% elongation recovery), while significantly improving Young's modulus (179.9 MPa), Shore D hardness (52 HD), scratch resistance up to pencil hardness, and solvent resistance (more than 97.3% weight retention after 30 days immersion of acid, alkali, salt, water, and ethanol). The micro-crosslinked structure uniquely balances mechanical robustness and self-healing ability, making mc-PUU a promising candidate for protective coatings in optical and industrial applications.
