Water evaporation is a ubiquitous natural process than can be applied to generate electricity through hydrovoltaic effect. However, it remains a great challenge to construct an evaporation system that can satisfy both high-efficiency evaporation and stable power output due to their differences in water managements. Herein, we demonstrate a sandwich membrane strategy to construct a three-dimensional (3D) asymmetric evaporator for efficient tandem solar water-electricity generation by coating two carbon black (CB)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) functional films with different channel structures and water uptake at two opposite sides of a wood chip. Owing to the smart self-regulating property of the thin PVA skin and the superior thermal utilization performance of the 3D structure, the fabricated device achieves high evaporation rate of 1.93 kg m −2 h −1 . More importantly, the asymmetric water distribution of the evaporation unit and the confined nanochannels of the dense PVA network render the generator with stable and efficient power output, and the simple connections of several units in series and/or parallel can easily power a commercial calculator, electrolyze methylene blue solution, and light up light emitting diodes , which well proves the conception of combining solar water evaporation and electricity generation in an integrated device.

Solar-driven desalination stands as a vital approach to addressing the freshwater crisis, with the potential to harness the water flow during evaporation to induce hydroelectric generation. The key to enhancing the efficiency and stability of this co-generation technology lies in the simultaneous maintenance of rapid evaporation and robust water transport. Here, an advanced evaporation-hydroelectric generator is developed by integrating a hydrophilic carbon cloth with a structure-optimized Cs 0.32 WO 3 /Cu x S nano-heterojunction. Importantly, both experimental data and density functional theory calculations indicate that the heterojunction design and increased defect state atoms facilitate carrier mobility and non-radiative recombination, thus boosting photothermal performance. Furthermore, the modified hydrophilic carbon cloth, which is optimized in thickness, ensures a sustained water supply and establishes a significant ionic concentration gradient. The device achieves a high open-circuit voltage, rapid evaporation rate and stability in highly concentrated brines. Notably, the generated electricity can sufficiently drive an interconnected electrochemical desalination unit, enabling continuous dual-mode separation of water and salt. The system relies on solar energy to drive an innovative coupling of photothermal evaporation and hydroelectricity, representing a significant step forward in the development of highly efficient and sustainable technologies for the cogeneration of freshwater and clean energy.

Chemical upcycling of waste polycarbonate (PC) into jet fuels through catalytic tandem hydropyrolysis/hydrodeoxygenation (THH) is a practical strategy to generate value from polymer wastes. A process which combining hydropyrolysis with vapor phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was proposed in a two-stage pressurized fixed-bed reactor. A cobalt-based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) derived material supported with nickel was designed for the vapor-phase HDO of phenolic compounds derived from PC hydropyrolysis. The product distribution could be regulated by optimizing reaction pressure in the reactor and catalyst to PC mass ratio. Experimental results showed that the products are all phenolic compounds in the absence of catalysts, while a high yield of jet-fuel range cycloalkanes (100%) was obtained under optimized conditions (7 bar H 2 pressure and 5:1 catalyst to PC mass ratio) over NiCo/C. The high HDO activity of NiCo/C depends on the synergistic effect of nickel and cobalt atoms, which facilitates the elimination of phenolic hydroxyl group and hydrogenation of benzene ring . This work puts forward an efficient approach for upcycling PC waste into jet fuels with MOF-derived NiCo/C as a catalyst.

The cogeneration technology of water-electricity, as an effective strategy to address the current environmental and energy crisis, has attracted increasing attention. Despite numerous advantages in the construction of single water or electricity generation platforms from bio-based materials, there are few reports on the research of multifunctional water-electricity cogeneration platforms. Herein, we introduce a novel bio-based multifunctional platform for water-electricity cogeneration and dye degradation by using modified sugarcane and functional electrodes. Such design promises long-term stable coproduction and adaptability to various types of polluted water, owing to the selection of sugarcane with excellent thermal insulation and unique design of carbon black loaded foam nickel as upper electrode. Notably, the typical design can obtain an interface evaporation rate of 1.44 kg m -2 h −1 , obviously suppressing than the similar reports under 1 sun. While its open circuit voltage of 400 mV in a simulated complex polluted water (under 1 sun), ∼33 % beyond the previous report; More interestingly, this typical platform, combined with catalytic modules, can implement a dual approach to sewage treatment. Our unique multifunctional platform offers a new and reliable way to combat the environmental and energy crisis.

Poly-generation of porous char and H 2 -rich syngas is a key technology for the full and high-value use of carbon and hydrogen elements in biomass. In this study, the synergistic evolution and regulation mechanisms of H 2 and porous carbon during K-assisted bamboo gasification were investigated using fixed-bed pyrolysis-gasification system. The results show that, due to steam activation, both the H 2 production rate and the physicochemical properties of char initially increase and then decline with prolonged gasification time, reaching their peak in the middle stage of the process. The hydrogen conversion rate further indicates that partial gasification achieves higher production efficiency, which is favorable for the poly-generation. K accelerates the evolution of both char and H 2 , enhancing their quality and ultimately enabling the poly-generation of 31.5 mmol/g H 2 and porous carbon with a S BET of 1917 m 2 /g. Moreover, K promotes oxygen enrichment in char, particularly the incorporation of O=C-OR and C=O groups on the char surface, thereby improving the functional applicability of the carbon.

The integration of solar-driven interfacial evaporation and electricity co-generation is considered a promising approach to simultaneously alleviate freshwater scarcity and the energy crisis. However, affected by intermittent solar irradiation/uncontrollable weather, the overall performance of solar-driven evaporation in the real world is greatly reduced. Herein, inspired by antifreeze proteins in beetles that survive in extreme climates, all-weather solar-driven interfacial evaporators with a sandwich structure are designed. The top and bottom layers composed of MnO 2 -modified cotton cloth are used for photothermal conversion and water transport, meanwhile, the middle layer made of a phase change microcapsule/hydrogel composite serves for heat storage and release. Under 1 kW m −2 irradiation, the evaporator exhibits a high evaporation rate of 2.67 kg m −2 h −1 and an efficiency of 89.5%. In the dark, the heat released from the phase change layer supports an evaporation rate of 0.43 kg m −2 h −1 , 3.6 times that of pure water. Additionally, assembled with a thermoelectric module, the hybrid device achieves a stable output electricity power of 0.42 W m −2 under 1-sun illumination and a prolonged output for 30 min in the dark. This work provides a novel approach for full-time solar-powered steam-electricity co-generation and a proof of concept for biomimetic steam generation/heat management integration.

Water and energy are indispensable pillars of human civilization, yet both face mounting challenges due to population growth, climate change, and environmental degradation. Enhancing the efficiency of water and energy systems and reducing their environmental impact are thus critical to achieving a low-carbon, water-secure future. This study introduces a novel, scalable and adjustable water-electricity coproduction fabric (PP-WECF) developed via an accessible shuttle-flying weaving technique. The PP-WECF integrates PEDOT:PSS fibers, which serve as a transpiration-driven electrokinetic power generator, with hydrophilic fibers that channel water, and PANI fibers that enable solar-driven steam generation. The integration of PEDOT:PSS fibers and PANI fibers for PP-WECF facilitates sustainable operation and synergistic energy utilization. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that solar illumination of 1 kW·m −2 , the PP-WECF shows an efficient, self-operating, and sustainable output of 1.1 V, 116.0 μA, and 1.6 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The scalable, prolonged, and adaptable outdoor operation throughout the daytime ensures the clean production of electricity and freshwater.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) represents a sustainable pathway for the co-production of freshwater and electricity, offering a promising solution to global water scarcity and energy deficits. However, the development of low-cost, easily fabricated, highly efficient, and salt-resistant water-electricity cogeneration systems remains a significant challenge. Herein, we fabricate a robust and cost-effective 3D solar evaporator (3D-CSC/SA@CF) by integrating corn straw-derived carbon (CSC), discarded cigarette filters (CF), and sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel. In this configuration, the CF scaffold serves as a hydrophilic, quasi-aligned porous substrate for rapid water transport, while the CSC layer functions as an efficient broadband solar absorber, endowing the evaporator with a high light absorption of 97.15 %. Benefiting from its abundant hydrophilic groups and rationally designed porous structure, the evaporation enthalpy is significantly reduced to 851 J g −1 —far below that of pure water. As a result, the evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 4.52 kg m −2 h −1 under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 , AM 1.5G), with a corresponding solar-to-vapor efficiency of 97.01 %. The system also exhibits remarkable salt-rejection performance, maintaining a stable evaporation rate of 3.22 kg m −2 h −1 in 20 wt% NaCl brine without salt accumulation, and effectively removes heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and antibiotics from simulated wastewater. Furthermore, we construct an integrated thermoelectric cogeneration system based on the evaporator, which delivers a maximum output power density of 307.1 mW m −2 under 1 sun illumination. This work not only demonstrates a sustainable waste-to-resource strategy but also provides a feasible and scalable approach to multifunctional hydro-energy cogeneration, highlighting its potential for practical applications in remote and resource-limited regions.

Interfacial solar steam generation has emerged as a promising approach for alleviating global freshwater shortages. Growing research interest focuses on harnessing sustainable biomass materials like wood to achieve dual-functional systems that produce freshwater while harvesting evaporation-induced energy for electricity generation. In this study, a laser-scribed wood photoabsorber is proposed to enable efficient co-generation of fresh water and electricity. Through brush-coating of cobalt nitrate solution followed by laser direct writing, a composite layer of graphite-Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles was successfully fabricated on the surface of basswood. Both cobalt salt coating and delignification processing were demonstrated to enhance the evaporation and electricity output performance of laser-engineered wood photoabsorbers. The device realized an evaporation rate and an efficiency of 1.71 kg m -2 h −1 and 92.8 % under 1 sun irradiation, respectively. Under ambient conditions without light irradiation, a single device (2 × 2 × 1 cm 3 ) was able to produce an open-circuit voltage of ∼336 mV and a stable short-circuit current of ∼30 μA in pure water. Furthermore, when multiple devices were connected in series, the generated voltage was sufficient to light a light-emitting diode or power an electronic calculator. Through laser-scribing of biomass materials, this study develops a sustainable solar interfacial evaporator capable of simultaneous freshwater production and electricity generation.

Osmotic energy is a promising clean and sustainable resource for osmotic power generation. However, scaling up reverse electrodialysis technology for osmotic energy harvesting is constrained by limited output power density, primarily due to the dependence of passive ion transport on the concentration gradient. Interfacial solar evaporators yield freshwater and highly concentrated brine. But inevitable heat losses reduce the solar energy utilization efficiency. This study was to construct a multilayer mesh composite membrane with tunable pore sizes via Ti 4 O 7 ceramic fibers and nanocellulose fibers, which adaptable to varying salt concentration environments. Solar radiation can be introduced for seawater desalination coupled with the osmotic energy conversion process to achieve more efficient solar energy utilization. The nanoconfined domains within the multilayer composite membrane enable an efficient interfacial solar water evaporation at a rate of 5.97 kg m −2 h −1 . The effective utilization of heat conduction energy losses elevates the osmosis power generation density to 7.60 W m −2 , which is increased by 198 % compared to conventional device models. This provides a novel design approach for applying ceramic fibers in osmosis power generation and for developing efficient, integrated freshwater-electricity cogeneration systems.

For the first time, biochar derived from a renewable resource, cotton stalk, is used as the feedstock of direct carbon solid oxides fuel cells (DC-SOFCs) for electricity and gas cogeneration. It turns out that the cotton stalk biochar has plenty of naturally grown K and Ca, which are active catalysts for the reverse Boudouard reaction in DC-SOFCs. This natural advantage of the cotton stalk biochar enables an extremely high power density of an anode-supported DC-SOFC at 850 °C, 0.9 W cm −2 , which is the highest among those of the reported DC-SOFCs. Meanwhile, high concentration of CO gas, which is an important feedstock for chemical industry, is obtained from the DC-SOFCs. The energy conversion efficiency of the electricity-gas cogeneration of DC-SOFCs reaches over 70%. A novel method, using compressed char, is proposed and carried out for continuous supply of cotton stalk char to a DC-SOFC. The present work has demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of cogenerating electricity and gas through DC-SOFCs with biochar derived from cotton stalk as the feedstock.
