PP/wollastonite/bamboo flour ternary composite materials with improved thermal and mechanical properties

Jiawei Wei,Fang Wang,Ruru Liu,Xiangying Chen,Zhongjie Zhang

Based on the micro-structure of wollastonite (WS) and bamboo flour (BF), a series of PP/WS/BF ternary composite materials are prepared using blending, twin-screw melt extrusion, and injection molding processes. The experiment shows that the formulation and processing technology play a significant impact on the structure, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites. BF has a significant impact on the nucleation and crystallization of PP, while WS has almost no effect on PP. BF improves tensile strength and enhances the strength of composites; WS improves the bending strength and flexural modulus and enhances the rigidity of composites. Taking the W-B-30-1:3 sample as an example, its tensile performance is the highest at 23.33 MPa, as well as bending strength and flexural modulus of 26.23 and 904.67 MPa, respectively. The combination of BF and WS leads to an increase in storage modulus, a decrease in loss modulus, a decrease in loss factor, an increase in glass transition temperature, and a decrease in bonding factor of ternary composite materials. This work can enrich the scope of PP composite materials, and the composite materials are expected to have potential applications in the fields of automotive interior parts with lightweight. Highlights Heterogeneous bonding among fillers enhances crystallization of composites. Wollastonite is more conducive to improving the thermal stability of composites. Adding fillers can more effectively enhance mechanical properties. The use of fillers increases interfacial compatibility and bonding performance.

P-Doped g-C3N4/CoMoO4 Micro–Nano Structures for Fire-Safe Polypropylene Composites

Xiaoqing Wang,Chengjiang Qian,Wenjie Pan

Extended utilization of polypropylene (PP) is compromised by its high flammability. Owing to the merits of easy preparation and abundance in raw materials, graphitic-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4, denoted as CN) is favored as flame retardant for PP. Nevertheless, it is hard to acquire the satisfying flame retardancy efficiency when CN dosage is low. Here, the interfacial assembly strategy is utilized to obtain the micro–nano structure of phosphorus-doped CN/CoMoO4 (PCN–Co) as flame retardant for PP. When using 2.0 wt % PCN–Co, the decomposition temperatures are markedly enhanced, confirming the delayed thermal degradation. Peak heat release rate and total heat release values are impaired by 33.6 and 12.0%, implying the inhibited release of heat. Peak smoke production rate and total smoke production values are dampened by 45.1 and 34.9%, signifying hindered emission of smoke. In short, this work provides inspiration for the design of CN-based nanostructures, mining their potentials in polymer composite fields.

Effect of partially crosslinked nanoparticle cluster networks in dispersed rubber phase on the toughness and stiffness of polypropylene composites

Zhenyu Li,Jiahao Shen,Haoqi Ma,Liu Fuyong,Wenwen Yu,Yonggang Shangguan,Qiang Zheng

To achieve a balance between toughness and stiffness in polypropylene (PP) composites and to explore the underlying mechanisms, this study employed modified nano-silica particles (S-SP) by a cross-linkable modifier (Si69) as reinforcing fillers. PP composites toughened with ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) reinforced by S-SP were prepared and compared with those reinforced by unmodified and methyl-trimethoxy-silane (MTMS)-modified silica particles. The results showed that when the S-SP content reached 30 wt% (relative to reinforced EPDM), the notched impact strength of the PP composite at room temperature reached 75 kJ/m 2 , while the tensile yield strength and Young's modulus were 23 ± 2 MPa and 670 ± 20 MPa, respectively, only 32.3 % and 34 % lower than those of pure PP. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the modified nanoparticles with cross-linking ability played a key role in constraining the rubber phase size, enhancing its modulus, rigidifying the particle networks, and improving the interface adhesion. These factors were essential in mitigating the loss of modulus and stiffness of the composites. Additionally, they significantly improve the notch impact strength of the composites by promoting the cavitation of the rubber phase into many slender fibrils and micro-voids, and inducing intense shear deformation of the PP matrix ligaments.

Highly toughened PP/Rice husk charcoal composites modified Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) with glycidyl methacrylate

Wang Y. B.,Deng X. L.,Cao B. Y.,Feng H. P.,Chen J.,Li P. D.,Ren L.,Zhang M. Y.

In this article, a strategy is proposed to prepare highly toughened composites from polypropylene (PP), rice husk charcoal (RHC) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-modified EPDM using melt blending and hot pressing. The structure of GMA-modified EPDM is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The influences of the amounts of EPDM and GMA-modified EPDM on PP composites are investigated by virtue of mechanical properties testing, dimensional stability analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the incorporation of GMA-modified EPDM significantly improves the toughness of PP composites and compared to PRHC the impact strength of PRKEG10 is up to the value of 537 J/m and increases by 555%, concurrently the tensile strength and modulus exhibit less decrease with the value of 8.22 MPa and 353 MPa, respectively. Shrinkage measurements show the dimensional change rates of length, width, and height decrease from 3.2%, 2.9%, and 3.3% to 1.73%, 1.46%, and 1.93%, respectively, improving the dimensional stability of PP composites. SEM reveals that shear yield and cavitation during the loading process lead to the excellent toughness of PP composites. This strategy provides a novel route to fabricate high ductility rice husk charcoal-based PP composites and expand certain industrial application.

A novel waterborne g-CPP sizing agent for the interfacial enhancement of SCF/PP composites

Zheng Li,Kexin Wang,Xudong Liu,Jiaoli Hu,Jie Zhang,Guorui Yang,Ruihang Xie,Jialiang Zhang,Yuhui Ao

To enhance the interfacial adhesion of short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites, a new modified chlorinated polypropylene resin (g-CPP) was synthesized and utilized to manufacture the sizing agent for SCF. The findings of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that g-CPP had high thermal characteristics, with its glass transition temperature (Tg) raised by 11°C.The g-CPP sizing agent that has been developed has increased storage stability (particle size was 109.8 nm). The contact angle of SCF was reduced from 81.52° to 60.04° after sizing, and the surface free energy was raised from 29.31 mN/m soared to 47.13 mN/m. The SCF/PP composites with 1 wt% sizing agent demonstrated the best interfacial adhesion, with improvements in flexural and tensile strengths of 54% and 39%, respectively. The interfacial reinforcement mechanism of sizing agent to improve interfacial adhesion was investigated. This work proposes an attractive way for the future preparation of high-performance SCF/PP composites.

Bio-inspired polydopamine functionalization of carbon fiber for improving the interfacial adhesion of polypropylene composites

Yuan Liu,Yichao Fang,Jianhua Qian,Zuozhen Liu,Bin Yang,Xinling Wang

A simple and effective modification for carbon fiber (CF) is presented in this work. CF was functionalized with a polydopamine (PDA) layer by pH-induced and oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine through a facile dip-coating procedure. The microstructure and chemical characteristics of the CF surface before and after modification were investigated by SEM, AFM, IR, Raman, XPS and DCA. The results manifested that PDA functionalization could increase the roughness, polarity and wettability of the CF surface, which were advantageous to promote the interaction between CF and the matrix. The interfacial properties of single modified CF (dCF) and pristine CF with resins were measured by micro-droplet method. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of single dCF with maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAPP) modified polypropylene (PP) matrix was 284.3% higher than that of PP/CF. Both the dCF and pristine CF were also used to prepare PP composites and their mechanical properties were discussed in detail. The PP/MAPP/dCF composite achieved the combination of excellent flexural and impact properties. The ultimate flexural strength and impact energy increased by 105.0% and 223.0%, respectively. The excellent bulk performance was concluded to be mainly due to the superior interfacial adhesion obtained by covalent reaction and hydrogen bonding between PDA on the CF and MAPP in the PP matrix, which was also confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and fracture morphology observations.

Preparation of Bamboo Long Fibers and their Reinforced Polypropylene Composites

Yu Tong Han,Da Gang Li,Kang Jie Shi,Dan Ma,Yu Tang,Chao Qun Ma

In the context of carbon neutrality, it is of good economic and ecological value to replace synthetic fibres with natural fibres as reinforcing materials in the preparation of composites. The effect of the hot pressing process parameters on the physical and mechanical properties of the LBF/PP composites was further investigated. The distribution of LBF in the composites was observed by CT. The experimental results show that the hemicellulose content of the BF decreases and the lignin content decreases after the alkali treatment. The mechanical properties of the LBF/PP composites were better at a hot pressing temperature of 180°C, a hot pressing pressure of 8 MPa, a hot pressing time of 15 min and a mass fraction of 70% LBF, with bending strength and bending modulus reaching 226.1 MPa and 15.1 GPa respectively. CT results show that the fibres are evenly distributed in the composites and that the hot pressing process allows the molten PP to penetrate the pores of the LBF surface, forming a good physical and mechanical bond. These composites can be used in various applications such as construction, automotive, consumer goods etc. They are considered to be a suitable alternative to solid plastic products and materials.

Heterogeneous ZIF-67@MMT with catalytic effect inhibits CO release: Application of mismatch engineering design based on lotus leaf inspiration in flame retardant and toughening of polypropylene

Zhe Tu,Hongxiang Ou,Yining Ran,Honglai Xue,Fang Zhu

The synthesis of a multifunctional flame retardant that combines flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and toughening effects is essential for expanding the range of applications for polyolefins. Inspired by the superhydrophobicity and low surface energy due to the lotus leaf micro/nano hierarchical structure, in this paper, we constructed 2D-3D heterogeneous ZIF-67@MMT by growing ZIF-67 in situ on the surface of montmorillonite (MMT) layers using wet chemistry. Mismatch engineering and micro/nano-graded heterogeneous structure confer high dispersibility and a high specific surface area on MMT, thus optimizing the pore structure and catalytic activity. Polypropylene (PP) composites with 25 wt% intumescent flame retardant (IFR) and 3 wt% ZIF-67@MMT achieved a 32.1 % limiting oxygen index and a UL-94 V-0 rating. 3ZIF-67@MMT/IFR/PP showed a 93 %, 86 %, and 66 % reduction in peak heat release rate, total smoke production, and CO production, respectively. In addition, ZIF-67@MMT has good interfacial compatibility and mechanical interlocking with PP. The tensile strength and elongation at break of 3ZIF-67@MMT/IFR/PP were increased by 58 % and 64 %, respectively, compared to 2MMT/IFR/PP. This work provides an effective strategy for the design of multifunctional heterogeneous nanomaterials for fire safety and other potential applications.

Green cinnamaldehyde and thymol modified zinc oxide with double synergistic antibacterial effects in polypropylene

Yanqin Shi,Jiaqi Shen,Dieshuang Yang,Junnan Du,Songyan Lu,Meng Ma,Huiwen He,Si Chen,Xu Wang

The green cinnamaldehyde (CA) and thymol (THY) separately or successively modified O-ZnO (O-ZnO-CA, O-ZnO-THY, and O-ZnO-CA-THY) were prepared after (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550) was grafted to the surface of ZnO (O-ZnO) and characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM. Polypropylene composites (PP/O-ZnO-CA, PP/O-ZnO-THY, and PP/O-ZnO-CA-THY) were prepared by melting the modified O-ZnO and PP. The antibacterial tests showed that the antibacterial rate of PP/O-ZnO-CA and PP/O-ZnO-THY against S. aureus and E. coli was obviously enhanced. It indicated an excellent synergetic antibacterial effect of O-ZnO and the little CA or THY grafted on the surface of O-ZnO. The antibacterial effect of O-ZnO-CA and O-ZnO-THY was related to the hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups contained in CA and THY. Importantly, CA and THY in O-ZnO-CA-THY exhibited another excellent synergetic antibacterial effect against both S. aureus and E. coli . The antibacterial rate of three PP composites containing 4 phr O-ZnO-CA-THY against S. aureus and E. coli reached 95% and 90%, respectively. The mechanism was regarded as that CA and THY grafted onto the same O-ZnO improved the contact probability between antibacterial agents and bacteria. Moreover, O-ZnO-CA, O-ZnO-THY, and O-ZnO-CA-THY had excellent migration resistance in the PP matrix.

Electrically Conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene/Polypropylene Nanocomposites with an Ultralow Percolation Threshold for Efficient Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Ming-Ke Xu,Ji Liu,Hao-Bin Zhang,Yu Zhang,Xinyu Wu,Zhiming Deng,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites are highly required for efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Although two-dimensional transition metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) nanosheets with metallic electrical conductivity and layered structure show great potential for the construction of interconnected conductance networks in polymer matrices, their preferred stacking feature and intrinsic hydrophilicity inevitably cause poor dispersion in organic polymers, making it challenging to prepare MXene/polymer nanocomposites with high electrical conductivity and satisfactory EMI shielding performances at low MXene contents. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient methodology to prepare highly conductive MXene/polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with an ultralow percolation threshold for efficient EMI shielding application. By dip-coating MXene nanosheets onto a polyethyleneimine-grafted PP textile, followed by vacuum-assisted compression molding, an interconnected conductance network of MXene nanosheets in the PP matrix is constructed facilely and efficiently. The resultant MXene/PP nanocomposite exhibits an ultralow percolation threshold of 0.027 vol %, a high electrical conductivity of 437.5 S m–1 at a low MXene loading of 2.12 vol %, and an outstanding EMI shielding performance of more than 60 dB within the X-band, superior to most other electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites. This work provides a new approach for fabricating MXene/polymer nanocomposites with outstanding electrical conductivity for high-performance EMI shielding applications.

The functional features and interface design of wood/polypropylene composites based on microencapsulated wood particles via adopting in situ emulsion polymerization

Xianzhu Ye,Hua Wang,Zhaofeng Wu,Haifeng Zhou,Xingyou Tian

The interface design based on microencapsulated wood particle in wood-polypropylene-composites (WPCs) was reported via in situ emulsion polymerization of butyl-acrylate (BA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA). SEM images, FTIR spectra, and surface parameters proved microencapsulation efficiently. With compatible-crosslinking network on wood surface, wood polypropylene composite was reinforced. For hydrophobic interface, by soaking for 72 h, water absorbance of wood–polypropylene composite decreased from 16.7 to 0.17 wt%. As well as flexural strength and tough parameters, tensile strength reached 37.39 MPa which was enhanced by about 83%. Viscoelastic properties showed microencapsulated effect enhanced the storage modulus of composites and the glass-transition temperature ( T g ) of polymer components. Ascribing to microencapsulated crosslinking interactions and weak chain-motions, the melting enthalpy and initial decomposition temperature ( T d ) of wood–polypropylene composite were also improved. To wood (adopting 72.9 wt% rigid MMA)-polypropylene composite, initial T d was improved from 248 to 356°C. POLYM. COMPOS., 39:427–436, 2018. © 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers

Largely enhanced dielectric and thermal conductive properties of polypropylene composites by adding mixture of exfoliated boron nitride and liquid metal

Zilong Xie,Rui Xue,Zhengli Dou,Lingyi Xiao,Yuhang Li,Qin Zhang,Qiang Fu

For microelectronic fields, high dielectric, high insulating and high thermal conductive performances need to be simultaneously integrated in materials to improve devices’ performance, safety, and thermal management ability. Despite the huge potential of exfoliated boron nitride (BN)/polymer composites in them, the exfoliation of BN is difficult, leading to limited increases of dielectric and thermal conductive performance. Herein, BN is first exfoliated in liquid metal (LM) matrix by mechanical grinding, which activates the interaction between LM and BN to promote exfoliation. Then the one-pot mixture containing exfoliated BN and LM, is used as hybrid fillers (LM@BN) without separation for preparing polypropylene (PP)/LM@BN composites. The composites behave a remarked dielectric constant of 3.5 and thermal conductivity of 1.9 W/m·K at LM@BN content of only 5.5 vol%. Extra low dielectric loss (0.005) and low conductivity (10 −11  S/cm 3 ) of PP could be also maintained, due to suppressed space charges by the uniformly-dispersed exfoliated BN.
