PVA/silica/mucin hydrogel with high toughness and low friction

Xiansheng Tan,Wenting Deng,Shuhuan Feng,Tengfei Xu,Yuxin Wang,Jianhao Zhao,Jianhua Rong

For hydrogel applied in joint cartilage replacement, achieving both high toughness and low friction performance is a significant challenge. This study modifies polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel by using wet annealing and immersion methods. Wet annealing allows conformational rearrangement to improve crystallinity while maintaining the overall structure of the hydrogel. The immersion method induces the formation of tiny silica dioxide particles within the hydrogel. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel are greatly enhanced through the synergistic effect of these two mechanisms. Additionally, the introduction of mucin into the hydrogel achieves ultra-low lubrication performance through the brush-like oligosaccharide side chains and the negative charge saliva residues of mucin. The prepared hydrogel material not only exhibits excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength 5.11 MPa, tensile modulus 4.56 MPa, compressive strength 27.56 MPa, compressive modulus 2.04 MPa), but also maintains continuous lubrication and a low friction coefficient (0.037) under high loads (5 N) and high speeds (20 mm/s). The hydrogel maintains volume stability in a simulated body fluid environment for an extended period after swelling equilibrium. This method for preparing ultra-tough and lubricating hydrogels can offer valuable insights for researchers in the field.

Tough Engineering Hydrogels Based on Swelling–Freeze–Thaw Method for Artificial Cartilage

Mingming Hao,Yongfeng Wang,Lianhui Li,Yinhang Liu,Yuanyuan Bai,Weifan Zhou,Qifeng Lu,Fuqin Sun,Lili Li,Simin Feng,Wei Wei,Ting Zhang

Articular cartilage, which exhibits toughness and ultralow friction even under high squeezing pressures, plays an important role in the daily movement of joints. However, joint soft tissue lesions or injuries caused by diseases, trauma, or human functional decline are inevitable. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels, which have a water content and compressive strength similar to those of many tissues and organs, have the potential to replace tough connective tissues, including cartilage. However, currently, PVA hydrogels are not suitable for complex dynamic environments and lack rebound resilience, especially under long-term or multicycle mechanical loads. Inspired by biological tissues that exhibit increased mechanical strength after swelling, we report a tough engineered hydrogel (TEHy) fabricated by swelling and freeze–thaw methods with a high compressive strength (31 MPa), high toughness (1.17 MJ m–3), a low friction coefficient (0.01), and a low energy loss factor (0.22). Notably, the TEHy remained remarkably resilient after 100 000 cycles of contact extrusion and remains intact after being compressed by an automobile with a weight of approximately 1600 kg. The TEHy also exhibited excellent water swelling resistance (volume and weight changes less than 5%). Moreover, skeletal muscle cells were able to readily attach and proliferate on the surface of TEHy-6, suggesting its outstanding biocompatibility. Overall, this swelling and freeze–thaw strategy solves the antifatigue and stability problems of PVA hydrogels under large static loads (>10 000 N) and provides an avenue to fabricate engineering hydrogels with strong antifatigue and antiswelling properties and ultralow friction for potential use as biomaterials in tissue engineering.

Solvent-Exchange-Assisted Wet Annealing: A New Strategy for Superstrong, Tough, Stretchable, and Anti-Fatigue Hydrogels

Yongchuan Wu,Ya Zhang,Haidi Wu,Jing Wen,Shu Zhang,Wenqian Xing,Hechuan Zhang,Huaiguo Xue,Jiefeng Gao,Yiuwing Mai

Hydrogels are widely used in tissue engineering, soft robots, wearable electronics, etc. However, it remains a great challenge to develop hydrogels possessing simultaneously high strength, large stretchability, great fracture energy, and good fatigue threshold to suit different applications. Herein, a novel solvent-exchange-assisted wet-annealing strategy is proposed to prepare high performance poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels by extensively tuning the macromolecular chain movement and optimizing the polymer network. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms are found to be “macromolecule crystallization and entanglement”. These hydrogels have large tensile strengths up to 11.19 ± 0.27 MPa and extremely high fracture strains of 1879 ± 10%. In addition, the fracture energy and fatigue threshold can reach as high as 25.39 ± 6.64 kJ m −2 and ≈1233 J m −2 , respectively. These superb mechanical properties compare favorably to those of other tough hydrogels, organogels, and even natural tendons and synthetic rubbers. This work provides a new and effective method to fabricate superstrong, tough, stretchable, and anti-fatigue hydrogels with potential applications in artificial tendons and ligaments.

A facile method to fabricate multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol mineralized hydrogels with high strength and adaptable shape

Lujie Wang,Yubiao Zhang,Hao Shen,Hao Peng,Jinping Zhou

Hydrogel-based materials are widely used in many fields, but most of them compared to tendons with the same water content do not exhibit high toughness, strength or fatigue resistance, which limits their application. The Hofmeister effect can adjust the mechanical properties of hydrogels by ions affecting the aggregation of polymer chains. Herein, we prepared a bioactivated hydrogel through simply mixing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Na 2 CO 3 aqueous solutions. PVA chains are aggregated by strong hydrogen bonds between CO 3 2− and  OH, at which stage the hydrogel is soft and easy to shape. Further salting out promotes the formation of crystal microphase of PVA chain, resulting in high mechanical strength and excellent toughness. The existence of Na 2 CO 3 endow the hydrogel with conductivity, exhibits high and stable sensitivity in strain sensing, and could be used to monitor human actions. On the basis of this method, Ca 2+ was added to prepare mineralized PVA hydrogels, which had high stability and long-term swelling resistance in different ionic solutions. In vitro cell experiment, hydrogel had obvious effect of promoting bone cell proliferation and calcium deposition. This work provides a facile and feasible method for preparing bionic hydrogels with high strength, toughness, and adaptable shape. Graphical

Tough adhesion and antifouling poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel coating on the arch wire for antibacterial adhesion

Li MingWen,Tang Chen,Yu XiXi,Shi XinLei,Yu Hui,Yin HaiYan,You Min,Chen Qiang,Ding Xi

The arch wire (AW) plays an important role in providing continuous force, aligning the teeth, and excellent dental arch stability for orthodontic treatment. However, the high friction performance of the AW surface can increase bacterial adhesion and colonization, leading to oral hygiene problems. Herein, a simple method is developed to modify the surface of the orthodontic wire with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel coating, which can improve the lubricity and antibacterial adhesion of the AW and prevent the oral hygiene problems caused by itself. The PVA hydrogel coating can toughly adhere to the surface of the AW and remarkably reduce the friction performance of the AW, and then its friction coefficient in water can reach 0.005. Under the action of brushing and bending, the PVA hydrogel coating possesses superior ultralubrication and hardly affects the mechanical properties of the stainless-steel substrate. Moreover, the PVA hydrogel coating can significantly inhibit bacterial adhesion on the surface of the AW, thereby reducing bacterial colonization and maintaining oral hygiene while correcting the shape of the mouth and jaw. Therefore, the PVA hydrogel coating exhibits tough adhesion and good antibacterial adhesion while maintaining the mechanical properties of the AW, and it is a promising antifouling coating for improving the performance of the AW.

High-strength antifreezing flexible conductive polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel sensors co-reinforced with silk porous mesh fabric and silk nanofibers

Chengyao Zhuge,Yaping Wang,Qian Qian,Shunyang Li,Wangyang Lu,Nan Li

Hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors have an enormous potential for applications in wearable electronics, but currently, realizing excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of sensors is difficult. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels were augmented with positively charged silk nanofibers (PCSNF) and PEDOT:PSS, and the resultant PVA-PEDOT:PSS-PCSNF hydrogel fabric showed remarkable mechanical properties (4.38 MPa) and elevated electrical conductivity. The presence of ethylene glycol (EG) in the hydrogel fabric imparts antifreezing properties and sustains electrical conductivity even at frigid temperatures (−18°C). In addition, EG contributes to the improvement of the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS. This PVA-PEDOT:PSS-PCSNF hydrogel fabric can be used as a precise and reliable strain sensor for detecting diverse human motions and facial expressions. Significantly, the PVA-PEDOT:PSS-PCSNF hydrogel fabric strain sensor exhibits a gauge factor of 1.02 and exceptional durability, withstanding 400 elbow bends. This study introduces an innovative method for creating high-performance and resilient hydrogel-based flexible sensors. Graphical

Three-dimensional boron nitride network/polyvinyl alcohol composite hydrogel with solid-liquid interpenetrating heat conduction network for thermal management

Mengmeng Qin,Yajie Huo,Guoying Han,Junwei Yue,Xueying Zhou,Yiyu Feng,Wei Feng

Polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels have been used in wearable devices due to their good flexibility and biocompatibility. However, due to the low thermal conductivity ( κ ) of pure hydrogel, its further application in high power devices is limited. To solve this problem, melamine sponge (MS) was used as the skeleton to wrap boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) through repeated layering assembly, successfully preparing a three-dimensional (3D) boron nitride network (BNNS@MS), and PVA hydrogels were formed in the pores of the network. Due to the existence of the continuous phonon conduction network, the BNNS@MS/PVA exhibited an improved κ . When the content of BNNS is about 6 wt.%, κ of the hydrogel was increased to 1.12 W m −1 K −1 , about two times higher than that of pure hydrogel. The solid heat conduction network and liquid convection network cooperate to achieve good thermal management ability. Combined with its high specific heat capacity, the composites have an important application prospect in the field of wearable flexible electronic thermal management.

Alginate Fiber-Enhanced Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels with Superior Lubricating Property and Biocompatibility

Ran Zhang,Wenhui Zhao,Fangdong Ning,Jinming Zhen,Huifen Qiang,Yujue Zhang,Fengzhen Liu,Zhengfeng Jia

The design of a novel interpenetrating network hydrogel inspired by the microscopic architecture of natural cartilage based on a supramolecular sodium alginate (SA) nanofibril network is reported in this paper. The mechanical strength and toughness of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel were significantly improved after being incorporated with the alginate nanofibril network. The multiple hydrogen bonds between PVA chains and alginate fibers provided an efficient energy dissipation, thus leading to a significant increase in the mechanical strength of the PVA/SA/NaCl hydrogel. The PVA/SA/NaCl hydrogel demonstrated superior water-lubrication and load-bearing performance due to noncovalent interactions compared with pure PVA hydrogels. Moreover, the bioactivity of the PVA/SA/NaCl hydrogel was proved by the MC3T3 cell proliferation and viability assays over 7 days. Therefore, alginate fiber-enhanced hydrogels with high strength and low friction properties are expected to be used as novel biomimetic lubrication materials. Keywords:poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel;alginate fibers;hydrogen bonds;high strength;superior lubrication

Antimicrobial peptide-based pH-responsive Polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel artificial vascular grafts with excellent antimicrobial and hematologic compatibility

Ying Liu,Qingyun Ma,Zhixuan Wang,Xinxin Shang,Yuting Lan,Guoping Guan,Lu Wang

Thrombosis and infection are the primary challenges limiting the clinical application of small-diameter artificial blood vessels. Numerous studies have focused on improving the hemocompatibility of artificial vascular materials, addressing properties such as anticoagulant activity, antithrombogenicity, low hemolysis rates, and reduced platelet adhesion. However, there has been comparatively less attention given to the antibacterial properties of these materials. This study utilizes polyester braided tubes and PVA/PAAm hydrogel materials, combined with surface modification techniques, to develop a pH-responsive antibacterial hydrogel artificial blood vessel graft. The hydrogel surface was grafted with a polymer brush hierarchical structure, and antimicrobial peptide MLT was immobilized to confer antibacterial properties. Additionally, 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride (DMMA) was covalently attached as a shielding group to achieve an environment-responsive strategy. The research demonstrates that this artificial blood vessel graft exhibits structural stability, excellent mechanical properties, and good cellular and hemocompatibility. Furthermore, it exhibits pH-responsive capabilities, triggering efficient antibacterial activity in low pH environments. The modified antibacterial hydrogel artificial blood vessel material shows low hemolysis rates, excellent anticoagulant properties, and reduced platelet adhesion. Therefore, the strategy of combining MLT with DMMA may effectively enhance the hemocompatibility and responsive antibacterial performance of artificial blood vessel materials.

Semi-degradable porous poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel scaffold for cartilage repair: Evaluation of the initial and cell-cultured tribological properties

Yi Cao,Dangsheng Xiong,Kun Wang,Yuxiang Niu

Tissue engineering for articular cartilage repair has shown success in ensuring the integration of neocartilage with surrounding tissue, but the rapid restoration of biomechanical and biotribological functions remains a significant challenge. Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel is regarded as a potential articular cartilage replacement for its fair mechanical strength and low surface friction , while its lack of bioactivity limits its utility. Combining the advantages of tissue engineering materials and PVA hydrogel, we developed a semi-degradable porous PVA hydrogel through addition of ploy (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres and salt-leaching technique. Friction coefficient , continuous friction tested by a ball-plate tribometer and worn surface observed by Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) were characterized for scaffolds prepared with variable porogen and PLGA content. Scaffolds cultured with rabbit chondrocytes for 4 weeks were also studied. The results showed that friction coefficient increased with a rise in porogen content, while it firstly increased and then decreased with increasing PLGA content. Similar results were obtained from cell-cultured scaffolds. In continuous friction test and worn morphology characterization, samples were more prone to be damaged with an increase in porogen and PLGA content. However, wear resistance was obviously improved for all scaffolds after 4 weeks of culture, though friction coefficient went up to a certain extent.

Preparation, mechanical properties, fatigue and tribological behavior of double crosslinked high strength hydrogel

Weichao Li,Kun Qiao,Yudong Zheng,Yu Yan,Yajie Xie,Yang Liu,Huimin Ren

Polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel (PVA-H) has been widely used in clinical transplantation because of its high water content , good biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, PVA-H have some problems, such as low elongation at break , low fatigue resistance and high friction coefficient , which hinders its application in clinic. In this paper, a novel high-performance PVA hydrogel enhanced by chemical double crosslinking (CDC) method had been synthesized. The influences of chemical crosslinking agent concentration on mechanical properties, friction properties and fatigue properties of materials were systematically investigated, in order to meet the clinical application of artificial meniscus, artificial cartilage , nucleus pulposus and so on. As a result, due to the introduction of chemical bonds, CDC hydrogels have over 600% elongation at break, modulus loss after fatigue test was reduced by 42%, average coefficient during friction was reduced to 0.048, and biocompatibility performance was excellent. The PVA hydrogel enhanced by CDC method provides a new concept for us to prepare high-performance PVA hydrogel and a promising material to replace cartilage, meniscus, nucleus pulposus and other tissues.

Cartilage structure-inspired elastic silk nanofiber network hydrogel for stretchable and high-performance supercapacitors

Yu-Xiong Ju,Peng Song,Ping-Yue Wang,Xin-Xin Chen,Tao Chen,Xiao-Hui Yao,Wei-Guo Zhao,Dong-Yang Zhang

Flexible supercapacitors are an important portable energy storage but suffer from low capacitance, inability to stretch, etc. Therefore, flexible supercapacitors must achieve higher capacitance, energy density, and mechanical robustness to expand the applications. Herein, a hydrogel electrode with excellent mechanical strength was created by simulating the collagen fiber network and proteoglycan in cartilage using silk nanofiber (SNF) network and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The Young's modulus and breaking strength of the hydrogel electrode increased by 205 % and 91 % compared with PVA hydrogel owing to the enhanced effect of the bionic structure, respectively, which are 1.22 MPa and 1.3 MPa. The fracture energy and fatigue threshold reached 1813.5 J/m 2 and 1585.2 J/m 2 , respectively. The SNF network effectively connected carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polypyrrole (PPy) in series, affording a capacitance of 13.62 F/cm 2 and energy density of 1.2098 mWh/cm 2 . This capacitance is the highest among currently reported PVA hydrogel capacitors, which can maintain >95.2 % after 3000 charge–discharge cycles. This capacitance Notably, the cartilage-like structure endowed the supercapacitor with high resilience; thus, the capacitance remained >92.1 % under 150 % deformation and >93.35 % after repeated stretching (3000 times), which was far superior to that of other PVA-based supercapacitors. Overall, this effective bionic strategy can endow supercapacitors with ultrahigh capacitance and effectively ensure the mechanical reliability of flexible supercapacitors, which will help expand the applications of supercapacitors.
