Osthole-infused polyurethane flexible coatings for enhanced underwater drag reduction and robust anti-biofouling

Yanru Qin,Shupeng Wang,Yong Fan,Li Wang,Chengchun Zhang,Jie Zhao,Luquan Ren

Excessive underwater drag, coupled with a heavy marine fouling, not only adversely affects the operation and speed of ships but also leads to increased energy and fuel consumption. Inspired by the remarkable drag reduction and anti-biofouling capabilities of dolphin skin, we have developed a flexible polyurethane (PU) coating infused with osthole (OST). This coating not only exhibits exceptional drag reduction by postponing the boundary layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow but also demonstrates robust anti-biofouling properties under both dynamic and static scenarios. The resultant PU x /OST y composite coating achieved the drag reduction efficiency of 8.20 % to 12.65 % with mean flow velocities ranging from 1 to 6 m/s. The PU x /OST y surfaces also displayed highly enhanced anti-biofouling performances, with ∼98.4 % and 97.5 % reduction for green algae Chlorella and the diatom N. closterium , respectively, as well as ∼99.4 % reduction against P. pantotrophus . Furthermore, the PU x /OST y coating had amazing durability in extreme environments, such as light aging, cycle sand abrasion, thermal aging, ultrasonic treatment, and tape-peeling. Therefore, this study underscores the potential of the bioinspired flexible coating for the application of underwater devices with prominent drag reduction and antifouling performance.

Bioinspired mechanically tough, high Adhesion, and healable polyurethane coating for high-temperature anti-corrosion and anti-cavitation applications

Haoran Xu,Shunli Wang,Kaijing Hu,Haixu Dou,Pengpeng Lu,Jianfu Wang,Yinsheng Li,Huichao Jin,Limei Tian,Luquan Ren

High-temperature corrosion in marine environments demands advanced protective coatings. Inspired by spider silks and mussels, a mechanically tough, high adhesion and healable polyurethane composite coating (PU-FM) was developed. Specifically, a chain extender (FA-FGE diol) rich in multiple Diels-Alder (DA) furan rings was developed to determine the optimal PU matrix, combined with 1 wt% dopamine-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The abundant DA bonds not only provide thermal stability and compactness of the polymer chain for high-temperature anti-corrosion, but also support the compatibility of self-healing properties. PU-FM exhibited outstanding mechanical properties, with a high toughness of 356MJ·m −3 , strength of 72 MPa, and adhesion of 16.2 MPa. After 60 h of cavitation, average corrosion depths of PU-FM were only 3.4 nm (20℃) and 8.4n m (80℃). The |Z| 0.01Hz values of PU-FM maintained 1.111 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 (20℃) and 7.361 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 (80℃) after exposed to 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions for 30 d. Moreover, PU-FM also demonstrated 93 % self-healing efficiency under near-infrared light for 90 s, retaining 81 % after three cycles. This approach, combining DA bond-rich chain extenders with nanofiller reinforcement, offers a novel solution for high-temperature anti-corrosion and self-healing coatings, addressing critical challenges in marine and industrial applications.

A novel noise-reducing and anti-corrosion polyurethane elastomer coating material modified by MXene / porous TiO2

Xu Yuan,Wei Wang,Cuiting Du,Qianqian Kang,Zhipeng Mao,Shougang Chen

The present study reports on a composite coating exhibiting noise reduction and anti-corrosion properties. We successfully synthesized a Ti 3 C 2 T x @TiO 2 -PDA composite filler that involves growing porous TiO 2 onto lamellar MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x) material and further coating both surfaces with a layer of polydopamine (PDA) material, providing the coating material with a micro-cavity structure to enhance its ability to dissipate acoustic energy and resist corrosion. And we incorporated it into the prepared disulfide bond-modified polyurethane coating matrix. Experimental tests and finite element analysis demonstrate that the coating can reduce environmental noise by approximately 33% while maintaining a maximum impedance modulus |Z| of 5.51 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 after immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 25 days. The porous structure of the composite filler provides micro-cavities within the coating, while its lamellar structure acts as a physical barrier against corrosive media. Furthermore, introducing disulfide bonds enhances acoustic energy dissipation within the coating. Consequently, this coating exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance and noise reduction performance, presenting significant potential for applications in marine equipment's noise reduction and corrosion prevention.

Castor oil-based transparent and omniphobic polyurethane coatings with high hardness, anti-smudge and anti-corrosive properties

Mengyu Zhou,Zhiming Ha,Lei Lei,Yuzheng Xia,Peng Mao,Xiaonong Chen,Bifa Fan,Shuxian Shi

Polymeric coating technology provides a cost-effective and convenient solution for the surface pollution and corrosion issues on various substrates. Herein, a series of transparent and omniphobic bio-based polyurethane (PU) coatings with high hardness, excellent anti-smudge and anti-corrosion properties were prepared by using castor oil as bio-polyol, hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HDIT) as a cross-linking agent, and a small amount of monocarbinol terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) as an eco-friendly anti-fouling agent. Effects of the R-value (mole ratio of isocyanate groups to hydroxyl groups) and dosage of PDMS-OH (wt%) on the PU-PDMS coating's hardness, surface wettability , anti-smudge and anti-corrosion performance have been thoroughly investigated. It was found that the higher R-value led to increased coating hardness. The element content of silicon on the coating surface was confirmed to be higher than the theoretical value since the grafted PDMS chains partially enriched from the inner matrix to the coating surface for reducing overall surface energy. Various simulated water-based contaminants could quickly slide off from the coating surface without leaving any traces. Writing traces of oil-based marker could be shrunk immediately after writing and wiped clean from coating surface completely. Such anti-smudge properties could be maintained even after 1000 cycles of polishing. Moreover, the anti-corrosion performance of these PU-PDMS coatings has been investigated through electrochemical tests. The capacitance circular arc radius of PU 1.5 -PDMS 4.0 is 10 times of tinplate and 4 times of PU 1.5 , indicating the obtained coatings could offer better corrosion protection for tinplate than the regular PU coatings. This work would broaden the polyurethane application in omniphobic anticorrosion coatings.

Matt Polyurethane Coating: Correlation of Surface Roughness on Measurement Length and Gloss

Qiwen Yong,Jinming Chang,Qi Liu,Feng Jiang,Daidong Wei,Haijun Li

Matt polyurethane coating was successfully prepared through the synergistic effect of castor oil and phenolic epoxy resin into polyurethane backbone. The formation mechanism may be ascribed to the modulus mismatch between the partially modified epoxy polyurethane and partially unmodified polyurethane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the micro-rough surface morphologies. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and three-dimensional (3D) surface profilometer were applied to calculate a series of surface roughness parameters in different dimensions, such asSa,Sq,Sp,Sv,Sz,Sku,Ssk, etc. The exciting results of this paper—the correlation of surface roughness on measurement length and gloss—are explored in detail. It reveals the extrinsic property of measured roughness with measurement length and provides guidance for what kind of incident angle gloss meters (20°, 60°, and 85°) best describe the gloss of matt polyurethane coating.

Transparent and Durable Antismudge Polyurethane Coatings with Octadecyl Chlorosilane-Enhanced Bihydroxypropyl PDMS Polymer Brushes

Shidong Zhao,Limin Wu,Shuxue Zhou

A liquid-like poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) brush as an environmentally friendly, low surface energy modifier has a significant effect on improving the antismudge properties of coatings. However, in order to obtain a sufficient length of freely mobile chain segments to meet the liquid repellency, expensive single-terminal functionalized PDMS has to be chosen in the preparation of antismudge coatings. In this work, double-terminal functionalized PDMS was employed to fabricate antismudge polyurethane (PU) coatings with the help of alkyltrichlorosilane (RSiCl3). That is, bihydroxypropyl PDMS (BHPDMS) was terminated with RSiCl3, further grafted onto acrylic polyol chains using its residual Si–Cl bonds, and subsequently cured with an isocyanate trimer. Effects of the molecular weight of BHPDMS (Mn = 1000, 2000, 4300, and 10,000 g/mol) and the type of RSiCl3 (R = methyl, dodecyl, octadecyl) on the surface wettability of antismudge PU coatings were investigated. Among them, octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) terminated BHPDMS4300 exhibited the lowest water contact angle hysteresis (10.1°), which was even lower than that of the control samples via direct addition of monohydroxypropyl PDMS or BHPDMS4300. The antismudge PU coating also presented high transparency (90.5%) and excellent liquid repellency against various low surface tension liquids. Even after friction with steel wool, the coating can still maintain excellent antismudge performance. The results also showed enhancement of OTS on the liquid repellency of antismudge PU coatings, indicating its synergistic effect with BHPDMS brush. It is envisioned that OTS-terminated BHPDMS additive provides an avenue to fabricate cost-effective transparent antismudge PU coatings.

Metal-Free, Low-Surface Energy, and Self-Healing Polyurethane Coating with an Excellent Antifouling Property

Rijia Jiang,Mengyue Liu,Xiangyu Zheng,Xing Zhou

The prevention and control of water biofouling has always been the focus of antifouling research. Coatings containing metal ions can effectively inhibit biofouling. However, the application of this type of coating has been limited as a result of its toxicity, irreparability, and poor antifouling ability under static conditions. Here, we have synthesized a self-repairing polymer antifouling coating with hydrophobic and multiple self-repairing systems through structural design with polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), perfluorooctyl ethyl acrylate (TEAc-8), triclosan (TCS), and 3,3-dithiodipropionic acid as a raw material. The prepared coating can realize a self-repairing function at room temperature in both air and water, thereby prolonging the antifouling life of the coating. A large number of hydrogen bonds in the molecular structure enable the coating to have good adhesion to the substrate. At the same time, the lower surface energy (<20 mN/m) and higher hydrophobic angle (>110°) of the coating determine the material’s good fouling release ability. In addition, the lake antifouling experiments show that the coating has good static antifouling ability. The coatings prepared will provide an alternative strategy for designing self-healing marine antifouling coatings in practical applications.

Dynamically omniphobic and highly transparent polyurethane coating towards efficient self-cleaning on photovoltaic modules

Jianwen Peng,Peng Ye,Xinyu Bu,Yue Zhang,Yanji Zhu,Ruitao Wang,Di Bao,Huaiyuan Wang

Photovoltaic (PV) modules have become a powerful contributor to global CO 2 emissions mitigation, but have suffered a significant loss in power generation efficiency caused by the deposition of surface contamination. Conventional self-cleaning coatings typically require laborious fabrication processes, elaborate texturing, and fluorinated materials, which are difficult to integrate with transparency, environmental compatibility, and adaptability. Herein, we show a highly transparent, fluorine-free, and dynamically omniphobic liquid-like polyurethane coating (LLPuC) prepared by well cross-linking between polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-grafted hydroxyacrylate (P x HA y ) copolymer and polyisocyanate at elevated or room temperature. The LLPuC could be applied to various substrates by spraying or blading methods and has demonstrated good transparency (91.79 % at 550 nm) of the coated glass. The liquid-like flexible chains of PDMS were enriched on the LLPuC and moved spontaneously, resulting in a smooth surface with dynamic omniphobicity (WSA = 11.5 ± 0.6°, OSA ≤ 15°), anti-smudge, and self-cleaning capability, as evidenced by the LLPuC coated PV module achieving a 92.83 % efficiency recovery ratio after the self-cleaning process. Moreover, the obtained coating also exhibited good adhesion strength, flexibility, anti-abrasion, and stability. Thus, the approaches and findings in this work have opened up a new avenue for self-cleaning coatings of PV modules and various outdoor transparent devices.

Schiff base modified polyurethane coating with enhanced mechanical property for marine antifouling application

Silei Liu,Rongrong Chen,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Jiahui Zhu,Gaohui Sun,Hongsen Zhang,Jun Wang

Silicone coatings cannot completely prevent the adhesion of marine organisms on hull surfaces under static conditions. In this study, a Schiff base modified polyurethane antifouling coating (PUx-SBSi) was prepared by a facile method. The silicone modified by Schiff base not only retained the low surface energy characteristic, but also effectively addressed the inherent issue of insufficient static antifouling performance in single silicone-based materials. The PUx-SBSi coatings inhibited the adhesion of marine bacteria ( Pseudomonas xiamenensis ( P. xiamenensis )) up to 95.3 %. Furthermore, the PUx-SBSi coatings exhibited exceptional mechanical property and a significantly higher adhesion strength, with a maximum of 7.3 MPa, which overcome the limitations of inadequate mechanical property and weak adhesion strength of single silicone-based coatings. Therefore, PUx-SBSi coatings with both mechanical properties and static antifouling performance are anticipated to effectively protect ship surfaces from marine organisms, playing a crucial role in the sustainable development of functional coating materials.

Preparation and characterization of polyurethane clearcoats and investigation into their antigraffiti property

Liu Hu,Gao Lijing,Shang Qianqian,Xiao Guomin

A type of antigraffiti polyurethane clearcoat was prepared and characterized. Polymethylsiloxane grafted by fluorocarbon side chains (PSF) was first synthesized through hydrosilylation of polymethylhydrosiloxane with dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate. Hydroxyl fluoroacrylate resins with different hydroxyl contents were synthesized via free radical-initiated solution polymerization and further applied to prepare polyurethane clearcoats. The synthesized polymers were structurally characterized by using Fourier transform infrared and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance. The prepared polyurethane clearcoats underwent contact angle measurement, dynamic thermal mechanical analysis, nanoscratch experiments, and atomic force microscopy. The results reveal that low surface energy, high crosslink density, low coefficient of friction, and low roughness were jointly beneficial to antigraffiti properties. Antigraffiti testing was carried out on the clearcoat with 8.0 wt% PSF and 2.0 wt% active silicone fluid, and this clearcoat showed high resistance to acrylic spray paint, permanent markers, and other graffiti materials.

Self-sealing polyurethane coatings containing high oil-absorption resin for storage facility and fuel pipelines

Guojing Chen,Wenyu Fu,Zhiqiang Liu,Hao Wei,Zhijia Zhang,Guojun Wang,Songsong Zhang,Qiang Wang,Rui Li,Xiao Ouyang

Fuel leakage accidents of storage facilities and pipelines are one of greatest threats to the environment, life safety and economics. Appling self-sealing coating to pipe surface is an economical and effective method to prevent the fuel leakage. In this work, the high oil-absorption resin was designed and synthesized by suspension polymerization . The oil-absorption performance and oil-absorption volume expansion ratio of the high oil-absorption resin for gasoline, kerosene, and diesel were characterized, respectively. The saturated absorption rate of the high oil-absorption resin for gasoline reached 11.14 g/g, and the volume of the high oil-absorption resin expanded to 6 times when the absorption was saturated. The outstanding oil/water separate property of the high oil-absorption resin illustrated the adsorptive selectivity and the potential application of them for pipelines protecting in ocean. The high oil-absorption resin, as a functional filler to the polyurethane resin , exhibited excellent expanding in volume performance to seal the hole of the composite coating . The composite coating with 25 wt% of the high oil-absorption resin sealed a hole of 1.5 mm in diameter in 1 min. As the bottle with filled by kerosene was perforated by a needle with 3 mm in diameter, the composite coating with 25 wt% of the high oil-absorption resin was successfully instantaneous sealed the leak.

Fabrication of self-healable superhydrophobic polyurethane coating based on functional CeO2 nanoparticles for long-term anti-corrosion application

Hui Wang,Haiming Hu,Chunyong Zhou,Wangru Wei,Bing Fan,Haibo Wang,Shihua Dong

Corrosion of mild steel is everywhere and eco-friendly and efficient corrosion protection strategies deserve to be popularized. Superhydrophobic coatings are available for metal corrosion protection, but the limited-service life restricts their development. Here, we prepared environmentally friendly coatings with long-term corrosion resistant using a simple spray strategy. A two-layer superhydrophobic self-healable composite coating was prepared by spraying WFPU and fluoroCeNPs onto mild steel. The bottom WFPU prevents corrosion by corrosion inhibitor CeO 2 and repairs physical scratches by heating. The upper layer of fluoroCeNPs prevents the penetration of corrosive media by forming an air cushion at the solid-liquid interface. The combination of low surface energy and micro/nano hierarchical structure allows WFPU/fluoroCeNPs coating to exhibit superhydrophobicity and low adhesion, with a water contact angle of 157° and adhesion force 12.8 μN. In addition, WFPU/fluoroCeNPs coating exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, with an impedance modulus of 7.2 × 10 9  Ω cm 2 at low frequency (f = 0.01 Hz), which remains at 10 8  Ω cm 2 after 60 days in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. After self-healing, the material can recover to its original state, both in terms of mechanical and corrosion protection properties. This new composite coating, which combines environmental protection, energy saving and remarkable effects, has a wide application value for the protection of metal against corrosion.
