Benzene and cyclohexane are both important raw materials in polymer chemical industry. However, they are hard to be separated via the traditional distilling methods. In this work, ionic liquid copolymerized waterborne polyurethane (IL-co-PU) membranes were proposed for the pervaporation separation of benzene/cyclohexane mixtures. The results, including swelling rate, diffusion coefficients , partial flux, permeance and selectivity, showed that the IL-co-PU membranes could preferentially absorb and transfer benzene molecules rather than cyclohexane . The ILs might have functioned as facilitated transporter in the membranes. The permeation flux and separation factor of the IL-co-PU membranes increased simultaneously with the increase of IL contents. That is, these membranes had no trade-off between permeability and selectivity, which most of the polymer membranes suffered. With consideration of the good performance and easy handling property of the IL-co-PU membranes, they are of great potential in pervaporation separation of benzene/cyclohexane mixtures.

Waterproof and breathable microporous membranes with superhydrophobic properties have significant applications in numerous fields, including self-cleaning, outdoor protective equipment, and corrosion prevention. However, creating an environmentally friendly, fluorine-free, and waterproof breathable membrane (WBM) that offers excellent water resistance and durable superhydrophobic surfaces without post-coating technology remains a great challenge. Herein, we provide a facile and powerful method to fabricate a superhydrophobic, fluorine-free composite polyurethane (PU) WBM. This WBM is based on a corncob-like substrate membrane combined with a lotus-leaf-like surface layer with differing surface wettability; it is achieved via a two-step electrospinning and heat treatment technique. A corncob-like substrate membrane with excellent water resistance was prepared owing to its improved surface wettability and small pore size. It features a uniform hierarchical rough structure achieved by introducing appropriate SiO 2 nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) and two-component liquid silicone rubber (rPDMS) with low surface energy. In addition, a lotus-leaf-like skin layer with the presence of SiO 2 rough microspheres was introduced on a corncob-like membrane’s surface for imparting superhydrophobicity to the double-layer WBM. Importantly, rPDMS not only acted as a hydrophobic agent synergizing with SiO 2 NPs to enhance the wettability of the fiber surface from hydrophobic to superhydrophobic but also served as an adhesive to firmly fix SiO 2 NPs to the fiber surface. The resulting double-layer composite membrane exhibited excellent waterproofness of 93.3 kPa, moderate breathability of 5235 g m −2 d -1 , and durable self-cleaning properties, indicating its great potential for use in protective clothing and other applications.

We synthesized novel polyurethane (PU) membranes from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a molecular weight of 2000, aminopropyl-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) with a molecular weight of 2000, and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) via a two-step polymerization. The structure of each synthesized membrane was studied through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The effect of the thermal behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The gas-permeability characteristics of the PU membranes were then tested for a single gas. The results show that the permeability of CO 2 ( P CO2 ) gradually increased with PDMS content. Among these PU membranes, PU-d (PEG/PDMS = 1:1, PEG/PDMS/IPDI/BDO = 1:3:2) showed the best P CO2 (132.6 Barrer) at 25°C and 1 bar pressure. The gas-permeability coefficients of each PU membrane at different operating temperatures were investigated, and the results show that P CO2 reached 302.6 Barrer at 65°C and 1 bar. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is an advanced thermal management strategy that achieves cooling by minimizing solar absorption while efficiently radiating heat into cold outer space, offering a promising solution for global thermal regulation. Inspired by the micron-scale porous networks widely distributed in white fungus, we fabricated a hierarchically porous polyurethane (PU) membrane with high porosity and low density via a non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process combined with solvent evaporation, using a pore-forming agent and incorporating hydrophobic silica nanoparticles. The resulting membrane exhibits a solar reflectance of 95.7 % and an emissivity of 94.5 % within the atmospheric window, delivering outstanding radiative cooling performance with a maximum temperature reduction of 5.95 °C under outdoor testing. Moreover, when integrated with textiles, the membrane forms hierarchically porous fabrics that maintain considerable reflectance after friction, acid–alkali and UV-resistance tests, while hydrophobic modification further endows the material with enhanced self-cleaning capability. This durable porous PU membrane holds great potential for applications in personal thermal management, energy-efficient buildings, and electronic device cooling.
