A turbidity-based study of removing polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics using magnetic biochar

Jia Li,Xuehai Chen

Magnetic biochars (MBCs) can quickly and efficiently remove polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs) from water. However, the removal efficiency of other types of NPs by different MBCs remains unknown. In this study, the removal performance of polyvinyl chloride NPs (PVC-NPs) by magnetic corncob biochar (MCCBC) and magnetic walnut shell biochar (MWSBC) was evaluated by measuring turbidity . The results indicate rapid adsorption of PVC-NPs onto MCCBC and MWSBC, reaching equilibrium within 1 h. The removal efficiencies of PVC-NPs by MCCBC and MWSBC were 94% and 92%, respectively. The relatively higher PVC-NPs removal capacity by MCCBC resulted from the greater amount of iron oxide on its surface, creating a rougher surface. The presence of monovalent ions (K + , Na + , Cl - , NO - 3 ) promoted the removal of PVC-NPs by MWSBC, but caused a reduction in the adsorption of PVC-NPs on MCCBC. In contrast, divalent ions (Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and SO 2- 4 ) significantly inhibited the removal efficiency of PVC-NPs by competing for adsorption sites on MBCs ( p < 0.01). Increasing the ionic strength inhibited the removal efficiency of PVC-NPs by MBCs. In addition, the highest removal efficiency of PVC-NPs was obtained at pH 5.0–7.0. Apart from adsorbing onto the surface of MBCs and becoming trapped within their pores, PVC-NPs can be magnetized by iron oxides. Moreover, PVC-NPs could aggregate with the small fragments of MBCs, thus allowing for easy removal by a magnet. The results provide new insight into the investigation of techniques to remove NPs other than PS from water.

Polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics transport inhibited in natural sandy soil by iron-modified biochar

Ni Zifan,Chen Xuehai,Cui Min,Li Jia

The small particle size of nanoplastics allows them to migrate through soil and make them highly bioavailable, posing a potential threat to groundwater. Measures are urgently needed to reduce the migration of nanoplastics in soil. However, there is limited research available on this topic. In this study, two types of iron-modified biochar (magnetic corncob biochar (MCCBC) and magnetic walnut shell biochar (MWSBC)) were selected and their effects on the transport of polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics (PVC-NPs) in natural sandy soil columns under different ionic types and strengths were investigated. The results show that the transport of PVC-NPs in single sandy soil columns was rapid and efficient, with the estimated breakthrough rate of 85.10%. However, the presence of MCCBC and MWSBC (0.5%, w/w) significantly inhibited the transport of PVC-NPs in sandy soil columns ( p  < 0.05), and MCCBC had a stronger inhibitory effect on the transport of PVC-NPs than MWSBC. This can be attributed to the fact that the adsorption of PVC-NPs on adsorbents followed the order as: MCCBC > MWSBC > sandy soil. The retention of PVC-NPs by MCCBC and MWSBC is determined by ionic type and ionic strength. The presence of coexisting ions enhanced the inhibitory effect of iron-modified biochar on the transport of PVC-NPs, with the following order: Ca 2+  > SO2- 4 > Cl −  > NO- 3. The inhibitory effect of MCCBC and MWSBC on the transport of PVC-NPs in soil columns increased with increasing ionic strengths. Furthermore, MCCBC and MWSBC inhibited the migration of PVC-NPs in a rainwater-soil system. The mechanisms by which MCCBC and MWSBC affect the transport of PVC-NPs in soil columns were considered to enhancing adsorption and decreasing soil pore volume. The results provide new insights into the management of soil nanoplastic pollution.

Surfactant-mediated transport of polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics in porous media: Influence of natural organic matter, natural inorganic ligands and electrolytes

Yujue Wang,Ming Wu,Yanru Hao,Hui Li,Cehui Mo

This study investigates the transport behavior of polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics (PVC-NPs) in porous media under surfactant-mediated conditions through a combination of column experiments, numerical simulations, and extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) interaction energy analysis. The effects of different surfactant types, ionic species, ionic strength, humic acid (HA), and phosphate were examined. Results indicate that surfactants enhance the transport of PVC-NPs, with anionic surfactants exhibiting a stronger enhancement effect than cationic ones. Generally, the addition of cations inhibited PVC-NPs transport, with divalent Ca 2+ exhibiting a stronger inhibitory effect than monovalent Na + . Interestingly, at low ionic strengths, Na + had a stronger inhibitory effect than Ca 2+ . In the presence of anionic surfactants, higher Na + concentrations promoted PVC-NPs transport. In contrast, both HA and phosphate inhibited PVC-NPs transport under cationic surfactants, with the degree of inhibition positively correlated with their concentrations. However, under anionic surfactants, high concentrations of HA inhibited PVC-NPs transport, while lower concentrations had no significant impact. Phosphate, under anionic surfactant conditions, initially inhibited but subsequently promoted PVC-NPs transport. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the natural transport and transformation mechanisms of PVC-NPs in the environment under surfactant influence, offering a solid data foundation and theoretical framework for accurately assessing the potential ecological and human health risks posed by nanomaterials.

Quantitative analysis of microplastics and nanoplastics released from disposable PVC infusion tubes

Xueyi Zheng,Qiaochen Feng,Liangqia Guo

The exposure of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) via medical device is still unknown to us. Herein, a visual quantitative detection of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs and a fluorescent quantitative detection of PVC NPs were developed. To overcome the aggregation of PVC NPs, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate was used as the stabilizer of PVC NPs. The brand-new disposable PVC infusion tubes were found to carry PVC MPs with the average total number (ATN) of 931.4 particles and PVC NPs with the average mass of 0.040 μg, respectively. For four typical infusion fluids such as 0.9% sodium chloride, 5% glucose, 5% sodium bicarbonate , hydroxyethyl starch 40 sodium chloride, the released PVC MPs and NPs were ranged from 1003.6 ∼ 3494.6 particles and 0.042 ∼ 0.087 μg, respectively in stimulating normal infusion scenario (room temperature 4 h). The released PVC MPs and NPs were also increased with the infusion duration and temperature. The released PVC MPs are mainly in granular form, accounting for 38 ∼ 49% of the total PVC MPs. Our findings indicate PVC MNPs can enter the blood vessel directly with the infusion fluids during intravenous infusion and the PVC MNPs exposure risk towards patients deserves more attention.

Polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics suppress homology-directed repair and promote oxidative stress to induce esophageal epithelial cellular senescence and cGAS-STING-mediated inflammation

Yixing Huang,Xiao Li,Shengfeng Xu,Dan Zu,Haidong Liu,Hanyi He,Qimei Bao,Yanhua He,Chen Liang,Yin Shi,Xiangdong Cheng,Yaoshu Teng,Zu Ye

Nanoplastics (NPs), which are characterized by plastic particles smaller than one micrometer, have emerged as pervasive environmental pollutants, raising concerns about their potential toxicity to living organisms. Numerous investigations have highlighted the tendency of NPs to accumulate in organs, resulting in toxic effects. Despite polyvinyl chloride (PVC) being one of the most prevalent NPs, its impact on the esophagus and the associated underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of PVC NPs on the esophagus and found that PVC NPs exposure induces oxidative stress and elicits DNA damage responses. Further analysis revealed that PVC NPs inhibit the homology-directed repair (HDR) pathway by suppressing the expression of breast cancer susceptibility gene 2 ( BRCA2 ) and growth factor receptor-bound protein 2 ( GRB2 ), resulting in genomic instability. Additionally, the release of free DNA activates cGAS-STING and the downstream NF-κB signaling, elevating inflammatory factors and chemokines, which further leads to cellular senescence. In vivo experiments corroborated these findings, showing that PVC NPs induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular senescence, subsequently impacting mouse behavior. This study contributes novel insights into the health risks associated with PVC NPs exposure and identifies potential therapeutic targets.
