Degradation of polyvinyl chloride microplastics via an electro-Fenton-like system with a TiO2/graphite cathode

Fei Miao,Yanfeng Liu,Mingming Gao,Xin Yu,Pengwei Xiao,Mei Wang,Shuguang Wang,Xinhua Wang

Nowadays, microplastic pollution has been brought into focus for its hazards to aquatic life. However, researches on the electrocatalytic treatment for efficient degradation of microplastics are still insufficient. Herein, an electro-Fenton like (EF-like) technology based on TiO 2 /graphite (TiO 2 /C) cathode was put forward to degrade polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a typical microplastic in water. It exhibited a remarkable performance on PVC degradation via cathodic reduction dechlorination and hydroxyl radical (O H) oxidation simultaneously. Besides, the effects of reaction temperature and initial PVC concentration were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the dechlorination efficiency of PVC reached 75 % after potentiostatic electrolysis at -0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 6 h. The intermediate products were explored during the degradation of PVC microplastics. The surface morphologies and molecular weight of PVC changed accordingly. Based on these results, a possible degradation process for PVC was proposed. This work demonstrated that such a heterogeneous EF-like technology using TiO 2 /C cathode was hopefully to provide an eco-friendly method for microplastic wastewater treatment.

Tortuously structured polyvinyl chloride/polyurethane fibrous membranes for high-efficiency fine particulate filtration

Na Wang,Aikifa Raza,Yang Si,Jianyong Yu,Gang Sun,Bin Ding

Two-tier composite filtration medium exhibiting excellent filtration performance to airborne particulate was prepared by a facile deposition of electrospun polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/polyurethane (PU) fibers on a conventional filter paper support. The tortuous structure and composition of resultant fibrous membranes can be finely controlled by regulating the precursor solution composition. By employing the PU incorporation, the pristine PVC fibrous membranes were endowed with robust tensile strength approaching to 9.9   MPa. The plausible correlation between resultant blended fibrous structure and mechanical property of relevant membranes was discussed, and a three-step break mechanism upon the external stress was proposed. Additionally, quantitative pore size and porosity distribution analysis using the capillary flow porometry method has confirmed the tortuous structure of PVC/PU fibrous membranes. Furthermore, the as-prepared membranes with high abrasion resistance (134 cycles) and comparable air permeability (154.1   mm/s) showed fascinating filtration efficiency (99.5%) and low pressure drop (144   Pa) performance for 300–500   nm sodium chloride aerosol particles, suggesting their use as a promising medium for variety of potential applications in air filtration.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of polyvinyl chloride and shrimp shells for carbon materials: Synergistic conversion and electrochemical properties

Mengxue Ling,Dachao Ma,Qisong Zhong,Cheng Liao,Zheng Liu,Dongbo Wang,Biao Han,Qingge Feng

Plastic and biomass waste are high quality carbon sources for carbon materials. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and shrimp shells were selected to investigate the synergistic conversion of co-hydrothermal carbonization and the electrochemical properties of carbon materials. It was found that the particle agglomeration of PVC plastics could be effectively avoided, thus, the dechlorination from UPVC tubes and shrimp shells at 220 °C for 120 min (HUPS 220–120) was up to 100.9 wt%, which was four times higher than solo hydrothermal treatment of UPVC tubes. The dissolution of calcium and magnesium in PVC plastics or shrimp shells was positively and linearly related to the removal of chloride ions on PVC plastics, with the molar ratio close to 1:2. The hydrolysis of shrimp shells catalyzed by hydrogen chloride (HCl), providing abundant nucleophilic groups, which in turn substituted for chlorine on PVC to form polyethers and polyamines. Interestingly, the co-hydrothermal treatment induced O and N functional groups on the hydrochars to maintain and evolve into C O and pyridinic-N after further carbonization and activation. With the features of large specific surface (1161.3 m 2 ·g −1 ), numerous microporous (87.66 %), high graphitization degree (I D /I G =0.85), and abundant C O and pyridinic-N, the carbon materials derived from hydrochar (CHPS 220–60) demonstrated strong charge storage capacity, good conductivity, and multiple redox potentials, raising the capacitive performance as high as 277.5 F·g −1 at 0.5 A·g −1 . This work aims to provide an effective method not only for the upcycling of PVC plastics and shrimp shells but also for the preparation of energy storage materials.

Upcycling of polyvinyl chloride to porous carbon for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption materials

Wan-Ting Yang,Yang-Yang Xie,Shi-Mei Xu,Gang Wu,Yu-Zhong Wang

The increasing accumulation of plastic waste, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics containing halogens, has led to severe environmental issues. To achieve environmentally friendly treatment and upcycling of PVC , this study presents a straightforward two-step method for converting PVC into porous carbon materials. First, PVC is subjected to ambient temperature ball milling in a KOH/polyethylene glycol (PEG) system to efficiently remove chlorine atoms (degree of dechlorination up to 93.88 %), yielding a crosslinking precursor. Subsequently, the precursor is carbonized via co-carbonization with K 2 CO 3 , resulting in a layered porous carbon material with a high surface area and abundant micropores and mesopores. This method significantly reduces the emission of the corrosive gas HCl during carbonization while improving the carbon yield. The prepared carbon material exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −47.65 dB at a thickness of 3.5 mm and filler loading of 10 wt%, along with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.96 GHz. This method has the potential to be extended to practical PVC products and represents a new approach to the upcycling of waste PVC.

Efficient and high-selective lithium extraction from waste LiMn2O4 batteries by synergetic pyrolysis with polyvinyl chloride

Yuxue Zhang,Zhaoyong Liu,Jiahui Wang,Hui Du,Qi Sun,Ruitong Gao,Zhenming Xu

Recycling Li from spent lithium ion batteries (SLIBs) in an efficient and highly selective manner could protect the environment and introduce the circular economy principle to society. Simultaneously, the urgent need to address plastic waste, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), has become a global concern. In this work, a strategy for Li extraction through synergetic pyrolysis of LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials (LMO) and PVC is proposed. Under optimal conditions, the recovery rates of lithium and manganese reached 99.89 % and 0.02 %, respectively, demonstrating efficient separation of these elements. Temperature was found to play a critical role in the leaching rates of lithium and manganese by promoting the decomposition and reduction of LMO. Additionally, kinetic analysis shows that the activation energy ( E a ) of the synergetic pyrolysis is 139.60 KJ/mol, and the pyrolysis mechanism satisfies third-order reaction process. Eventually, the proposed mechanism involves the synergistic effects of chlorination and reduction reactions. First, HCl is generated by PVC pyrolysis under the catalytic effect of LMO. Then, the chlorination of HCl with LMO occurs by capturing structural oxygen and generating LiCl and MnCl 2 . Simultaneously, the reduction reaction between the reducing species generated by PVC pyrolysis and LMO occurs to form Li 2 O and MnO, ultimately enabling the separation of lithium and manganese. Overall, this paper presents a novel approach for future applications by providing a theoretical basis for selective Li extraction.

Combined toxicity of polyvinyl chloride microplastics and copper to marine jacopever (Sebastes schlegelii)

Zike Li,Meijing Zhao,Zhihua Feng,Lin Zhu,Qi Sui,Xuemei Sun,Bin Xia

Marine organisms commonly encounter co-stress resulting from the coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals pollution in marine environments. Nevertheless, the combined effects and toxicity mechanisms of MPs and heavy metals on marine organisms remain unclear. This study integrated growth, physiological, morphological, and biochemical markers to assess the individual and combined toxicity of polyvinyl chloride MPs (PVC MPs, 1 × 10 4 particles/L) and copper (Cu, 200 μg/L) on marine jacopever ( Sebastes schlegelii ). The results revealed that co-exposure to MPs and Cu had a more detrimental impact on jacopever compared to the single-exposure groups, as evidenced by the enhanced growth inhibition, respiratory stress, and hepatotoxicity . This phenomenon may be attributed to PVC MPs accelerating the accumulation of Cu in jacopever liver. Therefore, peroxidation damage occurred in the co-exposed liver and may result in liver dysfunction . These findings contribute valuable insights into the risks associated with the coexistence of MPs and heavy metal pollution in marine ecosystems .

Adsorption of tetracycline by hydrochar derived from co-hydrothermal carbonization of polyvinyl chloride and garden waste: Adsorption characteristics and enhancement mechanism

Chenyu Wang,Weibo Sun,Han Zhou,Xiaohui Sun,Ying Su,Chao He

The environmental risk posed by tetracycline (TC) in aquatic environments cannot be overlooked, and hydrochar has shown promising potential for adsorbing and removing TC. This study utilized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and garden waste (GW) as feedstock , preparing hydrochar through co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC), aiming to investigate its adsorption performance for TC. The results demonstrated that the equilibrium adsorption amount of hydrochar produced via co-HTC (HPG) for TC was increased by 28.11% and 406.03% compared to hydrochar derived from PVC and GW, respectively. The HTC temperature and reaction time were positively correlated with the TC adsorption amount of HPG, but the increase was limited beyond 220 °C and 4 h, while the PVC blending ratio had a minor effect on TC adsorption. Subsequently, the adsorption characteristics of HPG for TC were systematically investigated to clarify the effects of adsorption conditions, environmental factors, and regeneration cycles on the adsorption performance of HPG; and further through the properties characterization of HPG and hydrochar prepared from the individual feedstock, the potential mechanism enhancing TC adsorption in co-HTC was explored. HPG adsorbed TC through the interaction between surface carbonyl groups and TC's π-electrons, while PVC produced carbonyl compounds through dechlorination and intramolecular dehydration during co-HTC. GW facilitated the dechlorination process of PVC and provided a substrate for the linkage of carbonyl compounds. This study revealed the adsorption performance and mechanism of hydrochar derived from co-HTC of PVC/GW for TC, offering insights for utilizing hydrochar from organic waste for antibiotic pollution control.

Photothermal Upcycling of Waste Polyvinyl Chloride Plastics

Hao Han,Penglei Yan,Qingye Li,Shuyi Zhang,Binglei Jiao,Gaolei Wei,Zhao Wang,Muhan Cao,Panpan Xu,Qiao Zhang,Jinxing Chen

Upgrading the most difficult-to-recycle waste polyvinyl chloride remains a significant challenge due to the potential formation of highly toxic substances, such as polychlorinated biphenyls. Here, we introduce a paradigm shift with a mild photothermal dechlorination–carbonization process that converts waste polyvinyl chloride plastics into valuable carbon materials. Through detailed techno-economic assessment (TEA) process modeling, based on recycling 96,000 tons of plastics, we demonstrate that utilizing clean solar energy for photothermal conversion can save approximately 2.34 × 1012 kJ electricity and reduce the carbon footprint by 261,912.2 tons compared to traditional thermal-driven methods, offering clear environmental benefits. Notably, this photothermal recycling method can process more than 10 types of postconsumer and mixed waste polyvinyl chloride plastics, yielding carbon materials that exhibit excellent performance as components in sodium-ion energy storage batteries. Photothermal catalytic recycling of plastics thus emerges as a green and sustainable technology with promising applications.

Flame-Retardant Plasticizer Derived from Renewable Acids for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Improved Toughness and Flame Retardancy

Boyou Hou,Xueying Shan,Qianqian Cui,Zhendong Chen,Jinchun Li

Biobased plasticizers have gained significant attention for their potential to replace conventional petrochemical-based additives in the production of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) products, offering an environmentally friendly alternative. However, the incorporation of biobased plasticizers can render PVC materials highly flammable and produce substantial smoke, posing significant safety and environmental concerns. To address these challenges, this study developed a biobased biodegradable flame-retardant plasticizer (PLRCL) synthesized from renewable acids, namely, ricinoleic acid, l-lactic acid, and levulinic acid, along with 9,10-dihydro-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO). The innovation of this study lies in the successful synthesis of PLRCL and its integration into PVC films, which not only enhances the flame retardancy but also improves the toughness of the material. The PLRCL-endowed PVC films achieved a UL-94 V-0 grade and a significantly higher limited oxygen index of 37.9%, compared to the commercial plasticizer dioctyl phthalate plasticized PVC films. The pyrolysis of PLRCL was found to facilitate the formation of a complete and continuous char layer, thus improving the thermostability and fire resistance of the PVC films. This char layer acts as a protective barrier, suppressing the release of smoke and toxic gases during combustion, thereby improving the overall safety of the PVC materials. Mechanical testing revealed that the elongation at break and tensile strength of plasticized PVC films with 40 phr PLRCL reached 302.59% and 28.34 MPa, exhibiting outstanding flexibility. Meanwhile, the good volatilization and migration resistance of PLRCL endowed the long-term stability of PVC films. Besides, the loading of PLRCL could keep good optical transparency and improve the processability of the PVC products. Soil degradation experiments demonstrated that PLRCL is biotransformed by the microorganisms present in the soil into nontoxic and innocuous lipid molecules, highlighting the environmental benefits of PLRCL. In all, PLRCL is a promising green sustainable multifunctional plastic additive, offering a viable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plasticizers and providing insights into the design of sustainable flame-retardant plasticizers.

Granular composite of polyvinyl chloride anion exchange resin encapsulated with nano TiO2 for arsenic removal from water

Jianlong Guo,Jingjing Du,Li Yan,Jianbo Shi

Persistently high arsenic levels in drinking water threaten underprivileged areas worldwide. Although nanomaterials exhibit exceptional arsenic removal properties, their implementation presents challenges. We converted N-methylimidazole-modified polyvinyl chloride into a granular anion exchange resin (PNAXRs) using an environmentally friendly and gentle synthesis method. Additionally, a unified approach for embedding nanomaterials within these resins was proposed, yielding a TiO 2 composite resin (TiO 2 @PNAXRs). Structural characterization confirmed the successful grafting of imidazolium cations with anion-exchange properties onto polyvinyl chloride side chains. BET analysis indicates a high specific surface area of 70.31 m 2 /g for the PNAXRs. TGA curves demonstrate the successful encapsulation of approximately 24.9% TiO 2 within the composite resin. The SEM-EDS results show a uniform distribution of TiO 2 in the PNAXRs, which facilitates the effective utilization of TiO 2 . Adsorption experiments in conjunction with XPS analysis provided insights into the dual role of inner-sphere complexation and ion exchange in the adsorption mechanism of As(V) by TiO 2 @PNAXRs. In dynamic adsorption tests utilizing high-As(V) groundwater from the Datong Basin as the influent, TiO 2 @PNAXRs demonstrated the ability to produce effluents that meet the World Health Organization's recommended limit for arsenic in drinking water, with a capacity of 1780 bed volumes. These findings support the use of PNAXRs as ideal matrices for TiO 2 and their practical application in As(V) removal processes.

Carbon dots with wide-spectrum absorption for enhanced anti-aging of poly(vinyl chloride) films

Chen Dong,Zijian Li,Hong Bi,Changyong Gao,Xuehua Ma

The aging of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films, driven predominantly by ultraviolet (UV) radiation and environmental factors, restricts their long-term utility. This study explores the incorporation of wide-spectrum-absorbing carbon dots (CDs) as an innovative additive to enhance the anti-aging properties of PVC films. The CDs were synthesized from Garcinia mangostana rind through an environmentally friendly solvothermal method. The resulting CDs exhibit robust light absorption across a broad spectral range, efficiently mitigating harmful UV effects. Innovatively, PVC films embedded with CDs demonstrated notable improvements in photostability under prolonged light exposure. Furthermore, beyond leveraging the specific optical properties of CDs, the construction of an interfacial cross-linking structure is crucial for achieving high mechanical strength in the films. The resulting CDs-embedded PVC composite film demonstrates good mechanical properties, with tensile strength increasing from 47.2 MPa to 101.1 MPa and elongation at break increasing from 39.9% to 237.8%. These findings suggest that wide-spectrum-absorbing CDs hold significant promise for extending the durability of PVC films, particularly in applications exposed to prolonged sunlight, such as food packaging.

Synthesis, characterization and performance evaluation of different alkyl chain lengths flame-retardant plasticizers for poly(vinyl chloride) derived from sustainable vanillic acid

Bingfeng Qian,Huichao Zhu,Pengfei Wang,Panpan Peng,Jianan Zhang,Mingyuan Wu,Jiuyi Liu,Qingyun Wu,Jianjun Yang

The current market for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plasticizers is dominated by flammable petroleum-based compounds, accounting for over 80 % of the total share. Due to their high flammability, the search for novel approaches to enhance the fire resistance of flexible PVC has gained urgency. However, traditional flame-retardant schemes suffer from shortcomings such as poor compatibility, inferior long-term performance, and weak mechanical properties. Herein, we synthesized a novel biobased flame-retardant plasticizer (VAn-P) using vanillic acid as a skeleton. This plasticizer exhibits remarkable properties, including a substantially lower glass transition temperature compared to unplasticized PVC. The binding energy between VAn-P and PVC is calculated to be –33.30 kcal/mole, indicating a strong interaction. Furthermore, the maximum elongation at break of VAn-P plasticized PVC is 16 times higher than that of unmodified PVC. All PVC samples plasticized with VAn-P achieved a UL-94 VTM-0 rating. TGA-FTIR analysis revealed that the flame-retarding mechanism of VAn-P involves solid-phase action, significantly delaying the dehydrochlorination process of PVC. Moreover, VAn-P exhibits superior migration resistance compared to dioctyl phthalate (DOP). We also investigated the effects of alkyl chain lengths in VAn-P on various properties of PVC blends, including thermal stability, flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and optical performance. The toxicity of vanillic acid-based flame-retardant plasticizer has undergone an initial assessment. Overall, this green plasticizer is expected to endow polymers with high plasticizing performance and flame retardancy, providing a novel and sustainable approach for the synthesis of functional plasticizers.
