Polyamide reinforced alginate-based hydrogel for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Long Huo,Feixiang Gao,Maokui Li,Junhang Wang,Xuanyu Li,Jianwei Bai,Haoyuan Wu,Hayinaer Azhati,Chunhong Zhang

The sustainable development of nuclear power hinges on accessing sufficient and stable uranium resources. Although the ocean contains abundant uranium, its low concentration and the presence of various interfering ions pose great challenges to extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, the sodium alginate-polyamidoxime/hyperbranched polyamide hydrogel spheres with high stability and adsorption capacity were developed. The gel spheres are molded by crosslinking sodium alginate with Ca 2+ and form a three-dimensional network structure through the covalent cross-linking of glutaraldehyde, which endows the hydrogel spheres with great stability and forms a pore structure. Accordingly, the unique spherical structure endows it with unparalleled recovery performance, enhancing its ability to efficiently recycle after uranium extraction. Adsorption experiments show that the maximum capacity reaches 537.8 mg·g −1 at a pH of 6. Notably, the hydrogel spheres can adsorb uranium over a larger pH range and maintain morphological stability, which makes them suitable for uranium recovery in complex situations like seawater. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was successfully preserved in five adsorption–desorption cycles, with a high removal rate from 95.07 % to 87.37 %. The dynamic cycle experiment reveals that uranium extraction in real seawater can still reach 82.59 %, indicating a high potential for seawater applications.

Polyamidoxime-based colloidal particles with a 3D network for synergistic uranium extraction from seawater

You Huang,Shufen Zou,Shan Lin,Bing Na,Zhuyao Li,Shuang Zhang

It is still a challenge to synthesize high-performance adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater. The stable uranyl tricarbonate complex in seawater seems to preclude coordination of uranyl ions by adsorbents. This study reports 3D networked colloidal particles consisting of polyamidoxime (PAO) and sodium polyacrylate (PAA-Na) segments via competitive conversion between amidoximation and hydrolysis in NaOH aqueous solutions. PAA-Na can promote the dissociation of uranyl ions via ion exchange for high-efficiency coordination by PAO. As a result, the colloidal particles, with high selectivity for uranyl ions, reach an outstanding uranium uptake capacity of 17.8 mg U per g in real seawater after 20-day adsorption.

Poly(amidoxime)/polyzwitterionic semi-interpenetrating network hydrogel with robust salt-shrinkage resistance for enhanced uranium extraction from seawater

Meng Cao,Guangsheng Luo,Qin Peng,Lushuang Wang,Yue Wang,Shilei Zhao,Hui Wang,Jiacheng Zhang,Yihui Yuan,Ning Wang

Effective uranium extraction from seawater can contribute greatly for meeting the needs of low carbon energy. Extensive studies have been conducted on polyamidoxime-based (PAO-based) adsorbents for their exceptional uranium adsorption capabilities. However, the salt-shrinkage effect severely hinders the extraction of uranium from seawater using traditional PAO-based adsorbents. This study synthesizes a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel, designated as PAO/PMPC-SH, using a free-radical polymerization approach utilizing PAO and zwitterionic poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC). The incorporation of the PMPC component endows the adsorbent with exceptional resistance to salt shrinkage owing to the antipolyelectrolyte effect. This characteristic facilitates the diffusion of uranyl ions within PAO/PMPC-SH, even in a high-salt environment with a salt concentration as high as 25 wt%, thereby exposing the uranium binding sites in the adsorbent. Moreover, PAO/PMPC-SH exhibits exceptional antibacterial activity. After 28 days of test in natural seawater, PAO/PMPC-SH demonstrates a high uranium extraction capacity of 6.26 mg g −1 , representing only a 9.14 % decrease compared with the capacity of adsorbing in marine microorganism-removed natural seawater. Overall, the notable performance of PAO/PMPC-SH in uranium extraction highlights its potential as a highly effective adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater.

A poly(amidoxime)-modified MOF macroporous membrane for high-efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Jiawen Wang,Ye Sun,Xuemei Zhao,Lin Chen,Shuyi Peng,Chunxin Ma,Gaigai Duan,Zhenzhong Liu,Hui Wang,Yihui Yuan,Ning Wang

Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) own excellent uranium adsorption capacity but are still difficult to conveniently extract uranium from seawater due to the discrete powder state. In this study, a new MOF-based macroporous membrane has been explored, which can high-efficiently extract uranium through continuously filtering seawater. Through modifying the UiO-66 with poly(amidoxime) (PAO), it can disperse well in a N,N -dimethylformamide solution of graphene oxide and cotton fibers. Then, the as-prepared super-hydrophilic MOF-based macroporous membrane can be fabricated after simple suction filtration. Compared with nonmodified MOFs, this UiO-66@PAO can be dispersed uniformly in the membrane because it can stabilize well in the solution, which have largely enhanced uranium adsorbing capacity owing to the modified PAO. Last but not least, different from powder MOFs, this UiO-66@PAO membrane provides the convenient and continuously uranium adsorbing process. As a consequence, the uranium extraction capacity of this membrane can reach 579 mg·g −1 in 32 ppm U-added simulated seawater for only 24 h. Most importantly, this UiO-66@PAO membrane (100 mg) can remove 80.6% uranyl ions from 5 L seawater after 50 filtering cycles. This study provides a universal method to design and fabricate a new MOF-based adsorbent for high-efficient uranium recovery from seawater.

Tingting Deng,Lina Lv,Xiaoyu Li,Jun Wen,Hao Li,Hao Peng,He Chen,Chang Liu,Lianggui Bao,Caiping Dang,Yihao You,Fangting Chi

Uranium extraction from seawater plays a key role in redefining the declining uranium reserves to afford sustainable nuclear power. However, it is an urgent need to develop adsorbents simultaneously possessing enhanced efficiency, collect ability, salt resistance, antibacterial properties and economy to massively extract uranium from seawater. Herein, aminomethanesulfonic acid grafted polyamidoxime fibers (PAO-AMS-A) with hydrophilicity, salt resistance and antibacterial properties were prepared. The resulting fibers display high salt resistance and high uranium uptake capacity, providing the fibers a very high adsorption efficiency of 554.09 mg g −1 in pure uranium solution, 205.43 mg g −1 and 473.44 mg g −1 in 8 ppm and 20 ppm uranium spiked seawater and 10.04 mg g −1 in real seawater, respectively. Furthermore, the material exhibited good salt tolerance, and the uranium adsorption capacity was still as high as 597.97 mg g −1 in high concentrations of NaCl solution. Note that PAO-AMS-A has also good antibacterial activity, the antibacterial rate against bacteriais cultured in seawater is up to 93.49 %. Overall, PAO-AMS-A fibers are promising in industrial uranium extraction from seawater due to their high adsorption efficiency, salt resistance and antimicrobial properties.

Thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes with poly (amidoxime) as organic interlayer for effective desalination

Zhixiao Liu,Zaixu An,Zhiming Mi,Zihan Wang,Qian Zhu,Dexing Zhang,Junman Wang,Jing Liu,Jialiang Zhang

Water pollution and scarcity have become a huge challenge to society. Hence, it is urgent to develop nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high permeance and high rejection for efficient desalination and wastewater treatment . Herein, novel NF membranes with poly (amidoxime) (PAO) as organic interlayer were prepared by the method of first coating and then interfacial polymerization (IP). The obtained NF membranes showed the regular nano-strips Turing structure and the polyamide (PA) layer thickness was as thin as 18.2 nm, which was probably attributed that the amidoxime groups significantly enhanced the surface hydrophilicity of poly (ether sulfone) (PES) support, and PAO as organic interlayer can bind with piperazine (PIP) through hydrogen bonding and Lewis acid-base interaction to reduce the diffusion rate of PIP, resulting in the unstable oil-water interface during IP reaction. As a result, the corresponding NF membrane exhibited the permeance up to 25.2 L/m 2 h bar with a rejection above 99% for Na 2 SO 4 , yielding an overall desalination performance superior to traditional NF membrane and most of NF membranes with inorganic nanomaterials as interlayer. Our work provides a simple avenue to fabricate advanced thin-film composite NF membranes with outstanding separation performance.

Biofouling-resistant polyamidoxime-based natural hierarchical porous bamboo strips prepared by in-situ polymerization for uranium extraction from seawater

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Jingyuan Liu,Qi Liu,Rongrong Chen,Peili Liu,Jun Wang

Effectively extracting uranium (VI) [U(VI)] from seawater requires efficient adsorbents. Generally, there are two major factors that affect the adsorption efficiency of adsorbents, including the biofouling around the adsorbents and the relative density of adsorption active sites. To enhance the practical application value of powdered polyamidoxime-based materials, macro-braidable and hierarchical porous bamboo strips (BS) with antibacterial properties are selected to synthetize polyamidoximized bamboo strips (PAOBS) by in-situ polymerization methods. On the one hand, natural BS have a bamboo quinone structure, and their intrinsic structure is not destroyed during the reaction process, which endows PAOBS with excellent antibacterial properties. In addition, PAOBS retains the hierarchical porous structure of BS, providing channels for the adsorption process, which is beneficial to achieve the maximum utilization of adsorption active sites. On the other hand, PAOBS increases the relative density of amidoxime functional groups, and its adsorption capacity (233 mg g −1 ) is approximately 2.14 times higher than that of pure PAO at pH= 6.0, including electrostatic effect and chelation mechanism. After PAOBS is floated in the Yellow Sea Basin for 30 days, its adsorption capacity for U(VI) reaches 1.03 mg g −1 . Importantly, the addition of BS increases the coordination modes with the uranyl ion, and the single coordination mode of CH(NH 2 )= N - O H from PAO is translated to the three mixed coordination modes of CH(NH 2 )= N - O H, CH( N H 2 )=N - O H, and CH( N H 2 )=N - OH and adjacent CH( N H 2 )=N - OH from PAOBS. Construction of PAOBS plays a role in the design of novel adsorbents with high relative density of adsorption active sites and biofouling-resistant, laying the steady foundation for further realizing sustainable U(VI) extraction from seawater.

Preparation of Antibioadhering Materials Containing Quaternary Phosphonium Salt for Uranium Extraction from Seawater

He Li,Shusen Chen,Yan Song,Haiyun Ding,Ziming Li,Haotian Wu,Fengju Wang,Hao Li,Ziteng Gao,Haizhen Wang

In this paper, three antibioadhering materials with quaternary phosphonium salt-modified polyamidoxime (PAO-QPS) for uranium extraction from seawater were prepared using commercial polyacrylonitrile fiber as the base material by the ion-exchange method. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to verify the correctness of the structure and to test the thermal stability of the synthetic materials. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the microscopic appearance of the material surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the composition of the surface elements before and after modification of the material and after adsorption of uranium. The uranium adsorption and biological adhesion resistance of the materials were tested. Polyamidoxime-modified hexyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (PAO-C6) was the best adsorption material among the three quaternary phosphonium salt-modified materials with different alkyl chains. The adsorption kinetic curve and adsorption isotherm were drawn according to the uranium adsorption results. The results showed that the adsorption time and temperature were positively correlated to the uranium adsorption capacity of PAO-C6. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity of PAO-C6 could reach 23.6 mg·g–1 in the simulated seawater with a uranium concentration of 3.3 mg·L–1. In addition, the inhibition rates of the material to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 87.60 and 90.59%, respectively, and the inhibition rate against marine bacteria reached 80.61%, indicating that PAO-C6 has good antibioadhering properties. PAO-C6 was expected to be used for uranium extraction from seawater.

Polyamidoxime and graphene oxide synergistically stabilized foam decontaminant for removal of radioactive surface contaminants

Lei Sijie,Lin Xiaoyan,Han Qiang

In this study, polyacrylonitrile was modified to polyamidoxime to enhance foam stabilization and decontamination rate. Polyamidoxime was combined with graphene oxide, 1 wt% of saponins, and 1 wt% of alkyl glycosides to formulate the PAO/GO foam decontaminant. The outcomes demonstrated resulted in the half-life of the foam extending from 32 to 308 min. The PAO/GO foam decontaminant displayed α-ray decontamination rates of 93.30%, 98.34%, and 99.81% on stainless steel, tile, and glass surfaces. Hence, the dual functional PAO/GO in stabilizing foam while enhancing decontamination rates underscores its potential for radioactive decontamination.

Regulation of chain conformation and synergistic effect of auxiliary groups towards polyamidoxime for highly efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Hao Peng,Xiaoyu Li,Lina Lv,Tingting Deng,He Chen,Lu Wang,Qiang He,Caiping Dang,Lianggui Bao,Yihao You,Fangting Chi

Amidoxime-based polymers have been widely regarded as ideal adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater. However, significant challenges remain in the efficient utilization of amidoxime groups on the polymers which is closely related to the conformation of molecular chains in complex marine environments. Herein, by integrating multi-scale computational simulation with chain conformation regulation, three representative auxiliary group were designedly introduced to polyamidoxime (PAO) by grafting glycine, aminomethylsulfonic acid and aminomethylphosphonic acid. Firstly, the hydrophilicity of adsorbents was directly observed to increase significantly after modification by contact angle test and swelling test. Furthermore, the chain conformation was investigated by combined SAXS and MD simulation under real factors from seawater. Finally, uranium adsorption performance and mechanism were investigated by XPS and DFT calculation. The minimum contact angle reaches 26.9° and the maximum swelling rate is above 153.4 %. The conformation of the modified PAO was much more stretched than the raw one, with a radius of gyration up to 161.5 nm for PAO-AMP. The uranium adsorption capacity of PAO was only 165.5 mg/g, while that of the modified adsorbents PAO-AMP went up to 375.0 mg/g. The above results indicate that auxiliary groups played a role not only in optimizing the chain conformation of adsorbents but also in enhancing coordination capacity with uranium, which is beneficial for uranium extraction from seawater. This study offers a new point of view to assess adsorption phenomena of polymers, bridging chain conformations in different environment at the mesoscopic level with metal–ligand interactions at the molecular level.

Hydroxyapatite synergistic polyamidoxime functionalized macroporous xerogels for fast removal of U (VI) in wastewater

Liya Zhang,Can Cheng,Qina Yu,Xiaoqian Jiang,Aixin Song,Jingcheng Hao

Recovering uranium (VI) from wastewater is crucial for the sustainable development of nuclear energy industry and ecological environment health. Polyamidoxime (PAO) based 3D hydrophilic adsorbents are regarded as ideal materials for their high selectivity and adsorption capabilities. However, constructing efficient 3D hydrophilic adsorbents from inorganic and PAO composites remains a challenge. This study exploited high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) as template to fabricate hydroxyapatite (HAP)-PAO hydrophilic xerogels for U(VI) extraction. The oil-in-water HIPEs were constructed using sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) modified HAP particles as stabilizers and acrylamide (AAm) with dissolved PAO as continuous phase. After the polymerization of AAm, macroporous xerogels were prepared by removing the water and oil phases. Xerogels exhibited the removal efficiency of 99.9 % for U(VI) within 3 h with a maximum adsorption capacity of 223 mg∙g −1 . The outstanding removal performance was ascribed to the specific structure of HAP and PAO which can effectively integrate with U(VI) ions in the presence of a hydrophilic network. This work provided a new approach to fabricate the complex adsorbents of inorganic particles with PAO for the rapid clean-up of U(VI) in wastewater.

Poly(amidoxime)-graft-magnetic chitosan for highly efficient and selective uranium extraction from seawater

Yizhe Zhang,Tingting Cai,Zhiwei Zhao,Bing Han

Adsorbents with highly efficient and selective recovery performance towards uranium are significantly demanded for the sustainable nuclear power production. Herein, poly(amidoxime)-graft-magnetic chitosan (P(AO)-g-MC) was synthesized through functionalizing magnetic chitosan with polyacrylonitrile followed by amidoximation process. Under magnetic field, P(AO)-g-MC can be separated from the solution in 10 s. Owing to the strong affinity of high-density amidoxime groups towards uranium, P(AO)-g-MC showed remarkable adsorption capacity, rapid kinetics and good regeneration performance in uranium spiked aqueous solution. Notably, the 7-day uranium adsorption capacity of P(AO)-g-MC from natural seawater in column mode was up to 5.14 mg/g, 12 times that of vanadium. The excellent uranium uptake performance over vanadium originated from the strong coordination by N and O in amidoxime groups according to theoretical simulation. The advantages of easy separating and high selectivity make P(AO)-g-MC a very potential uranium adsorbent in natural seawater.
