Flame retardant and hydrophilic coatings on undyed and dyed polyamide 6.6 textiles: Clarifying the processing and performance

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman,Chanchal Kumar Kundu,Hafezeh Nabipour,Xin Wang,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

This work was intended to clarify if the dyeing treatment could modify the functional properties of white substrate as well as the surface finishing would alter the initial color of dyed textiles. Thus, in this work, a kind of surface coating was applied to modify the flame retardant and hydrophilic properties of both the undyed (white) and dyed polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) textiles using some novel compounds like chitosan (CS), montmorillonite (MMT), sodium alginate (ALG) and phytic acid (PA) in a quadralayer (QL) or a hexalayer (HL) fashion. The obtained results revealed that the dyed fabric samples exhibited better flame retardancy and hydrophilicity compared to the undyed one; indicating the dyeing treatment contributed in improving the functional properties. For example, the 5HL-deposited dyed fabric sample (i.e., PA6.6-D-5HL) showed a maximum reduction in the peak heat release rate (pHRR) by 32% and the 7.5QL-deposited dyed fabric sample (i.e., PA6.6-D-7.5QL) brought a water contact angle (WCA) value of 0°. However, this kind of surface finishing caused a slight loss in depth of color for the dyed fabric samples.

Sustainable lignosulfonate-modified PA6.6 fabrics to improve durable flame retardancy, hydrophilicity and mechanical performance

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman,Xin Wang,Wei Cai,Lei Song,Bin Fei,Yuan Hu

Creating durable flame retardancy, enhanced mechanical performance, and hydrophilic polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) textiles via cost-effectiveness from sustainable renewable sources is a considerable challenge. This study introduces a pretreatment process involving the application of sodium lignosulfonate (LS) to the surface of PA6.6 fabrics, thereby enhancing their hydrophilic and flame-retardant properties. Subsequently, a layer-by-layer (LbL) nanocoating treatment is employed, utilizing renewable polyelectrolytes—chitosan (CS), LS, and poly (sodium phosphate) (PSP)—to create 8-bilayer (BL) and 4-quarda layer (QL) structures that further improve the hydrophilicity and durable flame resistance of PA6.6 fabrics. The combined LS-modified and LbL coatings notably increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) values from 19.5 % to 22.5 %, eliminated melt dripping, and secured a V -1 rating in the vertical burning (UL-94) tests. Moreover, the treated fabrics exhibited a 43 % reduction in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and a lower fire growth rate (FGR) of 0.84 W/g·s, with a significant increase in char yield% in both air and nitrogen (N 2 ) atmospheres. A cross-linked network structure is responsible for the superior hydrophilicity, enhanced tensile strength, and fabric softening properties. The self-crosslinking of sulfur-containing radicals with amide units ensures an anti-dripping performance that can withstand up to 30 home laundering cycles, demonstrating remarkable washing durability. However, a convincing approach has been developed for sustainable and high-performance materials for the textile industry, and a simple LbL technique using renewable polyelectrolytes that have traditionally been utilized in water treatment and food processing has been developed.

Construction of flame retardant coating on polyamide 6.6 via UV grafting of phosphorylated chitosan and sol–gel process of organo-silane

Chanchal Kumar Kundu,Xin Wang,Yanbei Hou,Yuan Hu

Phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) was synthesized and grafted onto the surface of polyamide 6.6 (PA 6.6) fabrics via UV-induced grafting polymerization in order to improve the flame retardant properties. Subsequently, PCS grafted PA 6.6 fabrics were modified by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) through sol-gel process in order to form a cross-linking coating. The results obtained from the vertical burning test indicated that only the PCS grafted and simultaneously sol-gel treated fabrics could stop the melt dripping. A maximum reduction (30%) in the peak heat release rate was achieved for the PA6.6-PCS-4W-SG fabric sample. The optimal flame retardant effect was achieved for the PA6.6 fabrics treated by PCS and APTES simultaneously, which was attributed to the joint effect of thermal shielding exerted by the silica and char-forming effect derived from PCS.

A novel sustainable phosphorus-containing heteroatom-based coating for polyamide 6.6 textiles: Enhanced flame retardancy and hydrophilicity

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman,Xin Wang,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

The demand for "green" materials increases due to concerns about the effects of flame-retardant textiles. Using natural plant-base compounds such as phytic acid (PA) and the most abundant green amino polysaccharide chitosan (CS) as effective and durable flame retardants for textiles is essential for creating sustainable and ecological textile products . This study aims to develop a novel, eco-friendly, phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing flame retardant known as ammonium phytate (AP), intending to improve the flame retardant properties of polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) textiles. UV-induced grafting with 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) increases the surface functional groups of PA6.6 fabrics. Later, the surface-modified fabrics were coated with phosphorus-containing heteroatom-based components, namely, sulfur, nitrogen, silicon, and boron, onto a single flame retardant system via layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition of positively charged chitosan/boron drop (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane/silicon dioxide (CS/BAPTES/SiO 2 ) sole solution and negatively charged AP solution to enhance superior hydrophilic and durable flame retardant performance. According to the data, a weight pick-up of 56.5% is attributable to only 4 BLs. However, all the flame-retardant-coated fabrics can completely stop the melting-dripping tendency and achieve B-3 to B-2 ratings after the UL-94 vertical burning test. In addition, the LOI values of treated fabrics increase from 18.5% to 23.5% compared to a pure sample. The AMPS grafted with a 4BL-deposited fabric sample exhibits a maximum decrease in peak heat release rate (PHRR) of more than 54%. Moreover, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) test reveals a significant increase in thermal stability and char yield. Additionally, the as-prepared phosphorus-containing heteroatom-based coatings impart a water contact angle value of approximately 0⁰ within 2 s, demonstrating that the treated fabrics exhibit superior hydrophilic performance. Moreover, using AMPS-grafted and only 2-BL-deposited treatments improves coating stability in washing and imparts durable flame retardancy that can resist up to 20 washing cycles. It is proposed that the sustainable phosphorus-containing heteroatom-based coating may be a potentially effective replacement for existing durable flame retardants routinely used in textile finishing operations.

Hybrid coatings for durable flame retardant and hydrophilic treatment of Polyamide 6.6 fabrics

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman,Chanchal Kumar Kundu,Hafezeh Nabipour,Xin Wang,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

The layer by layer (LBL) deposition of chitosan/melamine/urea (CS/ME/UREA) and phytic acid (PA) onto the acrylic acid (AA) grafted Polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) fabrics including a pad-dry-cure treatment with chitosan/graphene oxide (CS/GO) nanocomposites were considered to improve the hydrophilicity and durable flame retardancy. Obtained results indicated that these hybrid coatings could significantly improve the flame retardancy as the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value reached up to 25 % from 18.5 % and could completely stop the melt dripping where the fabric sample with two bilayers deposition and simultaneously treated with CS/GO nanocomposite (PA6.6-g-AA-2BL-CS/GO) achieved a V-1 rating. A 2BLs deposited hybrid coating (i.e., PA6.6-g-AA-2BL-CS/GO) could decrease the peak heat release rate (pHRR) by 47.1 %; whereas a maximum reduction of pHRR by about 56 % was achieved for 5BLs deposition. Moreover, a considerable improvement in thermal stability and char yield% were also realized in the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) test. Furthermore, the as-prepared hybrid coatings imparted better hydrophilicity as a 2BLs deposition along with pad-dry-cure treatment by CS/GO could boost up the hydrophilicity of the treated fabrics further compared to the only 2BLs deposited fabric sample. In addition, the application of CS/GO nanocomposite could improve the stability of this coating and able to stop the dripping tendency even after 10 laundering cycles as well.

Bio-inspired and dual interaction-based layer-by-layer assembled coatings for superior flame retardancy and hydrophilicity of polyamide 6.6 textiles

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman,Chanchal Kumar Kundu,Xin Wang,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

A dual interaction-based (i.e., ionic/covalent) deposition of carbohydrate polymers, namely chitosan (CS) and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) along with a plant-derived phosphorus-rich compound like phytic acid (PA) and a nitrogen rich compound like melamine (ME) was considered onto the phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) modified polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) fabric surfaces in order to impart durable flame retardancy along with super-hydrophilicity of the same. Firstly, the pure PA6.6 textile surfaces were modified by PCS via UV-induced grafting and subsequently, the above-mentioned polyelectrolytes were assembled onto the fabric surfaces in a quadralayer fashion [i.e., (CS/ME-OSA-CS/ME-PA) n ; “n” represents the number of quadralayers (QLs)]. Here, the amino groups of CS/ME and the aldehyde groups of the OSA were stabilized via covalent interaction and the deposition of positively charged CS/ME and negatively charged phytic acid (PA) formed ionic interaction. In the vertical burning (UL-94) test, both the only PCS grafted and the simultaneously PCS-grafted along with LbL assembled fabrics could completely stop the melt dripping tendency and attained a V-1 rating. In the meantime, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value received a moderate increase from 18.5 % of pure PA6.6 to 23.5 % for the PCS grafted and 8-QLs deposited fabric sample (i.e., PA6.6-g-PCS-8QL). Moreover, the PA6.6-g-PCS-8QL fabric sample exhibited a dramatic decrease in the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) by about 45 % and 24.7 % respectively alongside enhanced thermal stability. Apart from the appreciable flame retardancy, this fabric sample (i.e., PA6.6-g-PCS-8QL) could boost up the hydrophilicity to attain a water contact angle of 0°. Finally, this dual interaction-based deposition of bio-inspired polyelectrolytes posed a positive impact in enhancing the coating stability in laundering and imparting durable flame retardancy to sustain even up to 20 laundering cycles.
