Preparation of polyethersulfone/sulfonated polyethersulfonephenylethane microspheres and its application for the adsorption of bisphenol A

Fang Qiu,Minle Peng,Zhimei Wei,Xiaojun Wang,Jie Yang

A novel kind of sulfonated polyethersulfonephenylethane (SPESPE) was successfully synthesized firstly in this work. Then the SPESPE was introduced in polyethersulfone (PES) microspheres prepared by the electrospraying technique. The microspheres were applied to adsorbing bisphenol A (BPA) from its aqueous solution. Compared with the PES microspheres, the adsorption capacity of PES/SPESPE microspheres for BPA was increased significantly. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of PES/SPESPE microspheres was enhanced by increasing the amounts of SPESPE in the microspheres. The pH of solution had influence on the adsorption capacity of PES/SPESPE microspheres. The kinetic data of adsorption were found to follow pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich isotherm model was suitable to describe the equilibrium adsorption data. The microspheres also showed excellent regeneration and reuse ability. These results indicated that the PES/SPESPE microspheres have the potential to be used in environmental application. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43066.

Synthesis of Polycarboxylate Viscosity Reducer and the Effect of Different Chain Lengths of Polyether on Viscosity Reduction of Heavy Oil

Junqi Wang,Ruiqing Liu,Yiwen Tang,Junfeng Zhu,Yonghui Sun,Guanghua Zhang

Since there are not many studies on the application of polymeric surfactants in viscosity reduction emulsification of heavy oil, a series of polyether carboxylic acid–sulfonate polymeric surfactants were synthesized. The viscosity reduction performance and the effect of different chain lengths on the viscosity reduction effect were also investigated. The viscosity reduction, emulsification, wetting, and foaming performance tests showed that the viscosity reduction performance of this series of polymeric surfactants was excellent, with the viscosity reduction rate exceeding 95%, and the viscosity was reduced to 97 mPa·s by the polymeric surfactant with a molecular weight of 600 polyethers. It was also concluded that among the three surfactants with different side chains, the polymeric surfactant with a polyether molecular weight of 600, which is the medium side-chain length, had the best viscosity reduction performance. The study showed that the polyether carboxylic acid–sulfonate polymer surfactant had a promising application in the viscosity reduction of heavy oil.Keywords:polyether-type polycarboxylic acid;viscosity reduction;viscosity reducer;heavy oil

Tuning high-temperature dielectric properties of poly ether ether ketone by using self-crosslinkable polyetherimide and nanoparticles

Sen Niu,Xiaoxue Bai,Yimu Cheng,Hao Qin,Yunhe Zhang,Zhenhua Jiang

Polymer dielectric materials operating at high temperatures are widely needed for advanced electrical and electronic systems. However, currently commercial polymer dielectrics are limited to relatively low operating temperatures. Here, a series of polyether ether ketone (PEEK)-based blends with self-crosslinkable polyetherimide (c-PEI) has been prepared as high temperature dielectrics by melt blending. The obtained polymer blends maintain stable dielectric properties over a wide frequency and temperature range. At 160 °C,the dissipation factor of the blend film is only 0.0019 which is only 14% of the pristine PEEK. Crosslinked networks in polymer blends could efficiently restrict the movement of polymer segments which suppress the dielectric loss and enhance high temperature performance. Furthermore, the introducing of Al 2 O 3 improve the dielectric constant of the polymer blend, which compensated for the decreased dielectric constant due to crosslinking. In addition, the c-PEI/PEEK blends could be produced by industrial-grade continuous production process. This work presents a feasible strategy to large-scale fabrication of high-temperature dielectric materials by melt blending with self-crosslinkable polymers.

Interfacial performance and build orientation of 3D-printed poly(ether-ketone-ketone) reinforced by continuous carbon fiber

Tianxiang Fan,Ziyan Zhou,Huiying Zhang,Xiaole Zhao,Ye Chen,Huaping Wang

Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTPCs) prepared by fused deposition modeling (FDM) have gained great attention for the benefit of preparing products without molds. However, unexpected debonding and defects are derived from insufficient impregnation between fiber and matrix in 3D-printed samples, resulting in weak interfacial performance. In this work, a polyetherimide (PEI) sizing agent was used to improve the fiber-matrix interfaces, and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the continuous carbon fiber reinforced poly(ether-ketone-ketone) composites was increased to 27.1 MPa, 12.4% higher than that of unmodified composite. Meanwhile, the performance of CFRTPCs is affected by process parameters in FDM. Build orientation of FDM was discussed and PEI weakened the anisotropy of samples' mechanical properties because the performance variation caused by build orientation decreased from 86.8% to 65.2%, which may be beneficial for the forming freedom of in situ impregnated FDM. The addition of PEI makes sense to apply in situ impregnated FDM in high-tech fields. Highlights CCF/PEKK composites were prepared by in situ impregnated FDM. ILSS of flat-oriented CCF/PEKK was 86.8% higher than that of on-edge. 5 wt% PEI sizing agent promoted adhesion of CCF and PEKK to obtain the best mechanical properties. PEI weakened the anisotropy of samples' mechanical properties, which was conducive to forming freedom.

Preparation of a high performance PES/PES-OH Loose nanofiltration membrane based on reactive porogen

Qiaoyu Liang,Shenghuan Wang,Yanhong Ji,Mohammad Younas,Benqiao He

Loose nanofiltration membranes (LNF) have wide applications in the field of precise separation of small organic molecules. However, high separation precision of organic molecules with salts and a high water flux are still the challenges in the commercial applications of LNF membranes. In the current work, polyethersulfone (PES)/hydroxylated polyethersulfone (PES-OH) LNF membranes were synthesized by nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) based on reactive porogen (butyl dicarbonate, BDC) for the first time. The reactive porogen was decomposed to produce nanobubbles during heat-treated casting solution and phase inversion in HCl coagulation. It was found that the heat-treatment temperature of the casting solution was higher, the viscosity of the solution at 20 °C was higher due to the existence of more nanobubbles from BDC decomposition in the casting solution. Moreover, heat-treatment temperature had decisive impacts on the structure and separation property of the formed LNF membranes as nanobubbles actually acted as pore-forming agents. The HCl coagulation/immersion baths also promoted the BDC decomposition to produce the nanobubbles and improved the transmembrane water flux without sacrificing rejection and separation precision performance. The synthesized LNF membrane had a pore diameter approximately 3.81 nm, with a flux up to 200.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Direct Black 38 shows a rejection of > 99 %, whereas NaCl shows a rejection of < 5 %, exhibiting a good separation accuracy and found superior to the separation performance in the literature. This research result has offered a novel approach for the preparation of superior performance LNF membranes, which can be utilized for precise separation.

Poly(ether sulfone)–sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) blend ultrafiltration/nanofiltration-based proton-conductive membranes with improved performance for H2/Cl2 fuel cell application

Sa Liu,Li Zhou,Pengjie Wang,Linsong Zhang,Zhigang Shao,Baolian Yi

A new blend ultrafiltration (UF)/nanofiltration (NF)-based proton-conductive membrane, which comprised poly(ether sulfone) (PES), sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and absorbed aqueous acid, as an alternative to traditional exchange membrane, was proposed and designed for H2/Cl2 fuel cells. The effect of SPEEK concentration at different degree of sulfonation on membrane properties was systematically studied. The room-temperature conductivity of the prepared membrane doped with 3 M hydrochloric acid reached up to 106–131 mS cm−1. The electrochemical characteristics of membrane/electrode assemblies using the PES–SPEEK composite membrane were also analyzed. The cell exhibited better performance than that of a cell based on Nafion 212 membrane (about twice). The study provides an effective way to fabricate high performance porous membranes for H2/Cl2 fuel cell applications.

Preparation and performance of SPEI/PEI blending separator for enhanced lithium-sulfur battery

Liu Jiuqing,Hong Zikun,Zhu Fangfang,Li Qihou,Li Jie,Liu Meng,Wang Cheng,Song Feifei,Bai Lishun,Zeng Fanli

In this paper, a gel polymer electrolyte based on sulfonated polyetherimide (SPEI)/polyetherimide (PEI) blending separator has been fabricated through non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The performance of the SPEI/PEI blending separator is investigated through the morphology and electrochemical analysis. The addition of SPEI polymer has great effect on the morphology of separator’s top and bottom surface. When the SPEI mass ratio increases, the SPEI/PEI blending separator shows high porosity (up to 72.80%), ion conductivity (up to 2.63 mS cm −1 ), and low tensile strength (down to 7.98 MPa). The discharge specific capacity, capacity retention rate, and average capacity attenuation rate of lithium-sulfur battery using SPEI-2 (separator with the weight ratio of SPEI/PEI = 2:8) are 736.1 mAh g −1 , 57.2%, and 0.21% after 200 cycles, respectively. The result shows that the SPEI/PEI blending separator has lower capacity decays compared with SPEI-0 (separator with the weight ratio of SPEI/PEI = 0:10) and the commercial Celgard 2320 separator, which indicates that the existence of sulfonic acid group is conducive to the stability of the lithium-sulfur battery cycle. Therefore, it is concluded that the SPEI/PEI blending separator prepared by NIPS method is a potential separator for high-performance rechargeable lithium-sulfur battery.

Effect of functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes with aminated poly(ether sulfone) on thermal and mechanical properties of poly(ether ether ketone) nanocomposites

Haizheng Cheng,Ming Chen

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized with aminated poly(ether sulfone) (PES) through the amidation reaction. Characterizations by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction corroborated the success of grafting reaction. Raman spectra reveal that no further damage occurred after the anchoring of PES to the carboxylated MWCNTs. Transmission electron microscopy shows that PES functionalization resulted in better dispersion of MWCNTs than acid oxidation. Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/MWCNTs functionalized with PES (PES-MWCNTs) nanocomposites were fabricated by solution-mixing and compression-molding techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that PES-MWCNTs/PEEK nanocomposites have the highest degradation temperature and thermal stability. Furthermore, noticeable increases in the crystallization and melting temperature as well as in the degree of crystallinity were found from differential scanning calorimetry thermograms, attributed to the strong heterogeneous nucleating role of PES-MWCNTs. Tensile test presents that the attachment of PES to the surface of MWCNTs exceptionally improved the tensile strength and Young’s modulus, and obtained moderate elongation at break. Impact toughness test and dynamic mechanical analysis show that the addition of PES-MWCNTs greatly enhanced the toughness and storage modulus of PEEK, respectively. These results are attributed to improved dispersion of PES-MWCNTs and strong interfacial adhesion to matrix, which is evidenced by scanning electron microscopy.

Constructing coordination-connected flexible-rigid structures for the interfacial enhancement of CF/polyetheretherketone composites

Naiyu Jiang,Yingze Li,Qiao Wang,Nan Zhou,Hongyan Zhang,Xiaohu Zou,Dongxing Zhang

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymer composites have found widespread application due to their exceptional properties, including high specific strength and modulus, thermal stability, and chemical durability. However, since the interface serves as the bridge for load transfer between fiber and resin, the interfacial property directly affects the holistic performance of the composites. Considering the inertness of CF and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), as well as the modulus gap between them, we propose a flexible-rigid sizing agent to enhance the interfacial interaction. The sizing layers are constructed by the transition layer of polyetherimide (PEI) and the hybrid nanoparticles consisting of rare-earth coordination bonded flexible aramid nanofiber and rigid nano-TiO 2 . Calculated by density functional theory (DFT), the electron density difference (EDD) result displays the transfer of electrons between aramid nanofiber and nano-TiO 2 acted by rare-earth element. This treatment with flexible-rigid sizing agent significantly improves the surface activity, roughness, and wettability of CF. Meanwhile, the flexural strength and interlaminate shear strength (ILSS) of as-prepared CF/PEEK composites are 91.4% (810.2 MPa) and 58.2% (82.6 MPa) higher than those of unmodified CF/PEEK composites. This work presents a robust and promising approach for fabricating high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

The Influence of Surfactant on Sizing Agents and the Interface of CF/PEEK Composites

Yonglin Wang,Wenzhen Qin,Jianping Zhou,Kaixuan Lei,Shulin Bai,Jianfang Cao,Xiu Wang,Hongbo Liang

The effect of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) surfactant on dispersion performance of sodium styrene sulfonate hydrate modified polyethersulfone (sPES) sizing and the interface of carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites was studied. The addition of SDBS reduced the particle size of the sPES dispersed in water, improving the film-forming and stabilization of the sizing agent. It was found that the SDBS would not affect the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK composites when the weight of SDBS was below 0.6 wt%, but the excessive amount of SDBS seriously reduced the interface strength in composites. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of the sPES/SDBS sizing agent for CF/PEEK composites interface was elaborated.

High efficient protocol for the modification of polyethersulfone membranes with anticoagulant and antifouling properties via in situ cross-linked copolymerization

Hui Qin,Chuangchao Sun,Chao He,Dongsheng Wang,Chong Cheng,Shengqiang Nie,Shudong Sun,Changsheng Zhao

In this paper, we provide a highly efficient, convenient and universal protocol for blood-compatible modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes via in situ cross-linked copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) in PES solutions. Static water contact angle, protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and clotting time of the modified PES membranes are systematically studied, and the results indicate that the modified membranes show improved hydrophilicity, good blood anticoagulant and antifouling properties after introducing HEMA and AA. Meanwhile, the modified membranes perform low contact activation and complement activation when they come in contact with blood. The effect of the HEMA/AA ratios on the blood compatibility is also investigated to identify the different roles played by HEMA and AA in the modification; the HEMA could more effectively enhance the membrane antifouling property, while the AA could more effectively improve the anticoagulant property. The results indicated that the blood-compatible PES membranes prepared via the in situ cross-linked copolymerization had potential to be used in the field of blood purification.

A Non-Isocyanate Route to Poly(Ether Urethane): Synthesis and Effect of Chemical Structures of Hard Segment

Ziyun Shen,Liuchun Zheng,Danqing Song,Yi Liu,Chuncheng Li,Jiajian Liu,Yaonan Xiao,Shaohua Wu,Tianbo Zhou,Bo Zhang,Xuedong Lv,Qiyong Mei

A series of non-isocyanate poly(ether urethane) (PEU) were prepared by an environmentally friendly route based on dimethyl carbonate, diols and a polyether. The effect of the chemical structure of polyurethane hard segments on the properties of this kind of PEU was systematically investigated in this work. Polyurethane hard segments with different structures were first prepared from hexamethylene di-carbamate (BHC) and different diols (butanediol, hexanediol, octanediol and decanediol). Subsequently, a series of non-isocyanate PEU were obtained by polycondensation of the polyurethane hard segments with the polyether soft segments (PTMG2000). The PEU were characterized by GPC, FT-IR,1H NMR, DSC, WAXD, SAXS, AFM and tensile testing. The results show that the urea groups generated by the side reaction affect the degree of crystallization of hard segments by influencing the hydrogen bonding of the hard segments molecular chains. The degree of hard segment crystallization, in turn, affects the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer. The urea group content is related to the carbon chain length of the diol used for the synthesis of hard segments. When butanediol is applied to synthesize hard segment, the hard segment of the resulting PEU is unable to crystallize. Therefore, the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of butanediol-based PEU is lowest among three, though it possesses the highest urea group content. When longer octanediol or decanediol is applied to synthesize the hard segment, the hard segments in the resulting polyether-based polyurethane are crystallizable and the resulting PEU possesses higher tensile strength.Keywords:non-isocyanate;poly(ether urethane);hard segment
