This investigation evaluates the comparative efficacy ofCinnamomum burmanniileaf essential oil (YXYO) and its main active ingredients as a novel preservative to protect stored food commodities from fungal infestations, aflatoxin B1(AFB1) contamination caused byAspergillus flavus. Morphological observations utilizing SEM and TEM revealed significant alterations in treated samples, alongside a decrease in ergosterol content and a dose-dependent disruption of the antioxidant system and energy system. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that differentially expressed genes were predominantly associated with spore growth, the cell wall, the cell membrane, oxidative stress, energy metabolism, and aflatoxin biosynthesis. Solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) identified ten active ingredients in YXYO, including borneol,α-terpineol, terpinen-4-ol, etc. Moreover, an effective inhibition ofA. flavusinfection in peanuts was observed with the application of 30 μL/disc of YXYO and a blend of its active compounds.

A free-of-dust pollution extraction method combined-homogenate and ultrasonic cavitation system, namely, homogenate-combined ultrasonic cavitation synergistic extraction (HUCSE), was proposed for the efficient extraction of flavonoids from Cinnamomum camphora leaves. Response surface methodology of Box–Behnken design was employed to optimize the HUCSE process, and the optimum operation conditions attained with an extraction yield of 7.95 ± 0.27 mg/g were ethanol concentration 76%, homogenate/ultrasonic time 25 min, solvent-to-solid ratio 22 mL/g, and ultrasonic power 240 W. A second-order kinetic mathematical methodology was performed to depict the behaviors of HUCSE and heat reflux extraction method. The results suggested that the developed HUCSE is an efficient and green method for the extraction of C. camphora flavonoids or other plant natural products, where the obvious higher parameters of extraction capacity at saturation, second-order extraction rate constant, and original extraction rate were obtained when compared to the heat reflux method. The antioxidant activity assays in vitro showed that the C. camphora flavonoids possessed strong antioxidant activity and are promising to be applied as a natural alternative antioxidant.

Developing low-cost, efficient, and scalable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a critical challenge in the field of energy conversion. Among various candidates, Fe-N-doped carbon materials have garnered attention as promising alternatives to commercial Pt/C catalysts for ORR. In this study, we report an Fe-N catalyst synthesized by incorporating iron phthalocyanine withCinnamomum longepaniculatumwaste leaves as the carbon source. This catalyst exhibited an excellent four-electron ORR activity and the half-wave potential (E1/2) reaches 0.875 V, which was superior to that of commercial Pt/C (E1/2= 0.864 V). Additionally, the catalyst exhibits superior methanol tolerance and stability compared to commercial Pt/C. This approach, which utilizes biomass waste for the synthesis of electrocatalysts, not only provides an effective solution for reducing environmental waste but also addresses the issue of sluggish cathodic ORR kinetics in fuel cells, making it suitable for low-cost, large-scale industrial production.

Hydrosol is a natural aromatic product possessing broad application prospects as a food preservative; however, limited information is available regarding its anti-tyrosinase activity. Here, we investigated the inhibitory effects of Cinnamomum cassia Presl leaf hydrosol (CCPH) and Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf leaf hydrosol (CCSH) on tyrosinase activity. The primary components of CCPH and CCSH were cinnamaldehyde (82.1%) and citral (52.3%), respectively. The aromatic compound, terpenoid, and nitrogen oxide detectors within the electronic nose yielded higher response values for the two hydrosols. The IC 50 values for CCPH, CCSH, cinnamaldehyde, and citral in regard to their effects on tyrosinase were 84.8 ± 15.5 (vol%), 23.9 ± 2.0 (vol%), 53.3 ± 10.7 mM, and 21.0 ± 6.5 mM, respectively. According to Lineweaver-Burk plot analyses, cinnamaldehyde and citral are both non-competitive inhibitors. Both CCPH and CCSH inhibited browning of mushrooms ( Agaricus bisporus ). These results suggest that hydrosols could be used as potential tyrosinase inhibitors in the food additive and cosmetic industries. Novelty impact statement The primary components of CCPH and CCSH were cinnamaldehyde (82.1%) and citral (52.3%), respectively. The hydrosols and their primary components exerted an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase. CCPH and CCSH could inhibit the browning of mushrooms ( Agaricus bisporus ).
