A ntibacterial wound dressing can benefit the wound healing by preventing bacterial infection, especially for the electrospun ones due to their porous structures and easily loading antibacterial drugs. However, it is challenging to apply the antibacterial electrospun wound dressing to covering the wound conveniently and safely. Here, we presented one step fabrication and application of antibacterial electrospun zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing via a handheld electrospinning setup. The prepared zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing showed gas permeability of (76.1–5.45) mm/s, hydrophilicity with zero body fluid contact angle, swelling stability after 24 h as well as antibacterial zones over 5 cm against both E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. Moreover, in situ electrospinning process can deposit the electrospun zein/cinnamon oil fibers directly onto the wound, meantime forming a wound dressing. The mice cut-wound model experiment demonstrated that the one step in situ fabrication and application of zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing could nearly heal the wound within 11 d.

Background In order to detect the antimicrobial mechanism of combined treatment of cinnamon oil and gamma irradiation (GI), the membrane fatty acids and proteins characteristics of Shewanella putrefaciens ( S. putrefaciens ) treated with cinnamon oil and GI, and the distribution of cinnamon oil in S. putrefaciens were observed in this study. Results The membrane lipid profile of S. putrefaciens was notably damaged by treatments of cinnamon oil and the combination of cinnamon oil and GI, with significantly fatty acids decrease in C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C17:1, C18:1 ( p < 0.05). The SDS-PAGE result showed that GI did not have obvious effect on membrane proteins (MP), but GI combined with cinnamon oil changed the MP subunits. Cinnamaldehyde, the main component of cinnamon oil, can not transport into S. putrefaciens obviously. It was transformed into cinnamyl alcohol in the nutrient broth with the action of S. putrefaciens . This indicated that the antimicrobial action of cinnamon oil mainly happened on the membrane of S. putrefaciens.
Conclusion Cinnamon oil could act on the membrane of S. putrefaciens with the damage of fatty acids and proteins, and GI would increase the destructive capability of cinnamon oil on the membrane fatty acids and proteins of S. putrefaciens .

Conventional Pickering emulsions can kill microorganisms by slow release of active substances to prevent foodborne contamination; however, their low bactericidal efficiency due to the absence of bacterial inducibility is a problem that needs to be addressed. Inspired by the fact that the growth of bacteria depends on the consumption of proteins and polysaccharides by microbial enzymes, the present study prepared a novel Pickering emulsion capable of intelligent sensing and targeted release using chitosan (CS)-soy protein isolate (SPI) colloidal particles as stabilizers and plant essential oils as active substances. The Pickering emulsion demonstrated optimal performance in achieving these goals when prepared with a CS:SPI ratio of 1:4, an oil fraction of 40%, at a homogeneous speed of 25 000 rpm, and utilizing cinnamon oil as the plant essential oil. This was evidenced by the emulsion having the smallest droplet size and the greatest stability, which can increase the chances of coming into contact with microorganisms and avoid premature demulsification. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that the emulsion could control the bacteria-mediated release of essential oils, realizing intelligent sterilization. Experiments on banana preservation showed that the released essential oils effectively delayed banana spoilage. These findings contribute to the development of intelligent food preservation systems.

Low solubility, poor physicochemical stability and unpleasant odor are the main limitations for the application of some essential oils in the pharmaceutical and food industries. In this work, cinnamon oil (CIO) was encapsulated as oil phase with soya phospholipids as emulsifiers in sodium alginate-formed nanocapsules (NCs), which were further reinforced with acid-processed gelatin by electrostatic adsorption, and then incorporated into hyaluronic acid (HA)-fabricated microneedles (MNs) to construct a new transdermal drug delivery system (HAMNs-CIO@NCs). The obtained CIO-loaded nanocapsules (CIO@NCs) with optimized formulation showed 246.5 ± 4.2 nm in diameter, −24.5 ± 1.7 mV in zeta potential , 22.60% in drug loading, and kept physical stability. In HAMNs-CIO@NCs, the CIO@NCs were homogeneously distributed, and the HAMNs-CIO@NCs with sufficient mechanical hardness were successfully pierced into skin. Compared with the free CIO application, the transdermal fluxes of cinnamaldehyde and cinnamic acid in HAMNs-CIO@NCs group were increased to 8.5 and 6.3 times, and the application was completed within 1 min with no essential oil residue on skin, which improved patient compliance. Further more, HAMNs-CIO@NCs effectively alleviated the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea in rats and reduced the expression ratio of PGF 2α /PGE 2 in uterus. This newly designed drug delivery system is formulated with natural food-derived materials, and CIO is served as drug and carrier excipient for self-assembling nanocapsules in a green manufacturing process, thus providing a new strategy for efficiently using essential oils and contributing to a simple and safe treatment for relieving pain of primary dysmenorrhoea.

Designing smart molecular nanogels and nanogel actuators that can intelligently change the surface activity and controllably adjust the nanogel molecular arrangement has been a major challenge in the field of smart materials. Here, a series of ionic liquids composed of imidazolium ionic headgroups, alkyl chain spacers, and a photoresponsive azobenzene unit were designed. They can form smart ionic liquid nanogels with low melting points and construct smart nanogel actuators by light-trigger. The intelligent ionic liquid nanogels can be used to construct stable oil–water smart emulsions with photocontrollable actuators, which have the ability of reversible emulsification and demulsification triggered by light. The intelligent emulsions are applied to efficiently extract cinnamon oil from biomass cinnamon bark by a solvothermal method at low temperature. Cinnamaldehyde can be efficiently separated using intelligent reversible demulsification by the photocontrollable actuator. Cinnamaldehyde with a high purity of 97.21% can be obtained by the smart nanogel actuator. In a single extraction, the distributions of the smart ionic liquid in the water phase, the oil phase, and the cinnamon phase are 0.99%, 8.19%, and 90.82%, respectively. The total recovery rate of the smart ionic liquid is 95.53%. After three cycles, the extraction rate of cinnamon remains at 92.67%. 2D correlation FTIR spectra, 1H NMR, and DFT calculations indicate that the constructed ionic liquid nanogels have strong supramolecular interaction with lignin macromolecules, the special ability to disassemble hydrogen bonds on lignin, and the ability to quickly swell lignin fibers. The smart ionic liquid nanogel actuator provides an advanced platform for efficient extraction of sensitive compounds and smart oil–water separation.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder frequently accompanied by neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. The medicine and food homology (MFH) has shown potential for treating neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. This study aimed to provide a safe and efficient therapy for AD based on MFH. In this study, we develop a MFH formula consisting of egg yolk oil, perilla seed oil, raphani seed oil, cinnamon oil, and noni puree (EPRCN). To evaluate the ameliorative effects of EPRCN on AD-related symptoms, a mouse model of AD was constructed using intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine in ICR mice. Experimental results demonstrated that EPRCN supplement restored behavioral deficits and suppressed neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the hippocampus of scopolamine-induced mice. An in vitro study was then performed using induction of Aβ (25–35) in glial (BV–2 and SW–1783) and neuron (SH–SY5Y) cell lines to examine the improvement mechanism of EPRCN on cognitive deficits. Multi-omics and in vitro studies demonstrated that these changes were driven by the anandamide (AEA)-Trpv1-Nrf2 pathway, which was inhibited by AM404 (an AEA inhibitor), AMG9810 (a Trpv1 inhibitor), and BT (an Nrf2 inhibitor). Consequently, EPRCN is an effective therapy on preventing cognitive deficits in mouse models of AD. In contrast to donepezil, EPRCN exhibits a novel modes action for ameliorating neuroinflammation. The mechanism of EPRCN on preventing cognitive deficits is mediated by improving neuroinflammation and oxidative stress via activating the AEA–Trpv1–Nrf2 pathway.
