Chuqi Li,Zhiyuan Tan,Xiaohu Shi,Dekui Song,Yan Zhao,Yan Zhang,Zihan Zhao,Weifeng Zhang,Jiongyang Qi,Yifang Wang,Xin Wang,Zhenquan Tan,Nan Liu

Electronic tattoo, capable of imperceivably acquiring bio-electrical signals from the body, is broadly applied in healthcare and human-machine interface. Tattoo substrate, the foundation of electronic tattoo, is expected to be mechanically mimetic to skin, adhesive, and breathable, and yet remains highly challenging to achieve. Herein, the study mimics human skin and design a breathable, adhesive, and mechanically skin-like super tattoo substrate based on an ultra-thin film (≈2 µm). Similar to skin, super tattoo demonstrates strain-adaptive stiffening properties with high tear energy (5.4 kJ·m −2 ) and toughness (1.3 MJ·m −3 ). Superior to skin, it exhibits high adhesion, ionic conductivity, and permeability. A variety of conductive electrodes can be processed on it, showing the universality toward an ideal platform for electronic tattoo with stable and low contact impedance. Super tattoo-based electrodes can imperceivably and accurately monitor weak electromyography (EMG) of swallowing on the junction, providing effective guidance for rehabilitation training of dysphagia.

Zixin Lin,luo mingmei,Jiayi Liang,Zijie Li,Yanting Lin,Xiaman Chen,Baozhu Chen,Liang Peng,Yongchang Ouyang,Lei Mou

Skin electronics face challenges related to the interface between rigid and soft materials, resulting in discomfort and signal inaccuracies. This study presents the development and characterization of a liquid metal-polydimethylsiloxane (LM-PDMS) sticky conductor designed for wearable electromyography (EMG) monitoring. The conductor leverages a composite of LM inks and PDMS, augmented with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and surface-modified with mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUD) to enhance conductivity. The mechanical properties of the PDMS matrix were optimized using Triton-X to achieve a flexible and adhesive configuration suitable for skin contact. Our LM-PDMS sticky conductor demonstrated excellent stretchability, could endure up to 300 % strain without damage, and maintained strong adherence to the skin without relative displacement. Biocompatibility tests confirmed high cell viability, making it suitable for long-term use. EMG signal analysis revealed reliable muscle activity detection, with advanced signal processing techniques effectively filtering noise and stabilizing the baseline. Furthermore, we employed machine learning algorithms to classify EMG signals, achieving high accuracy in distinguishing different muscle activities. This study showcases the potential of LM-PDMS sticky conductors for advanced wearable bioelectronics, offering promising applications in personalized healthcare and real-time muscle activity monitoring.

Starfish tube feet inspired hydrogel electrode for durable underwater sEMG acquisition

Yuanming Ye,Jun Guo,An Wang,Chengxiang Zheng,Tao Wu,Zhipeng Chen,Xuanqi Wang,Yichen Chu,Ruiyu Bai,Zekai Liang,Honglong Chang,Kai Tao,Tengjiao Wang,Bowen Ji

Underwater surface electromyography (UW-sEMG) acquisition with long-term high quality is crucial to underwater activities, including rehabilitation, fatigue measurement, and sports monitoring. However, most UW-sEMG electrodes suffer significant performance decline, especially for hydrogel electrodes, due to the swelling-induced mechanical, electrical, and adhesive degradation. Maintaining high performance underwater over extended periods is challenging. The controlled underwater adhesion-detachment behavior of starfish is inspirative. Here, a starfish tube feet-inspired hydrogel (STFH) electrode is developed for UW-sEMG recording, including a micro-swelling hydrogel pillar, a biomimetic silicone sucker, and an Ag/AgCl disc electrode. By soaking freeze-dried hydrophilic hydrogel in tannic acid (TA) solution, the hydrogel exhibits skin-like modulus of 22.4 kPa, low skin impedance of 18.3 kΩ (10 Hz) and low equilibrium swelling ratio. Unlike traditional strategies for improving anti-swelling properties, this work leverages the interaction between the sucker and the swollen hydrogel to promote conformal contact. Consequently, the sEMG signal exhibits SNR of 26.7 dB and baseline noise of 12.8 μV even after 60 min of underwater working. The STFH electrode also shows anti-noise capability to resist skin vibration and wave oscillation. This STFH electrode enables durable UW-sEMG acquisition, which could further extend from the arm to the wrist to adapt wearing habits.

Robust accurate fatigue assessment enabled by an ultrasoft and super-adhesive low-impedance conducting polymer hydrogel

Qi Liu,Xinye Xu,Yuqian Zhang,Lishan Liang,Bin Zhang,Shuai Chen

The evaluation of muscle fatigue is vital for the prevention and diagnosis of diseases, medical treatment planning, and tracking rehabilitation outcomes. Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, which mirror the activity of muscles, are commonly captured using skin-mounted electrodes to assess fatigue levels. Nevertheless, conventional epidermal electrodes usually fall short in terms of adhesion and compliance, impairing their capacity to seamlessly conform to the skin and accommodate its dynamic movements, thereby compromising the precision of muscle fatigue assessments. Herein, we introduce a plasticized template and synergistic doping strategy to fabricate the PAA/PEDOT:PSS/LS (PAPL) hydrogel, where a polyacrylic acid (PAA) network serves as a dynamic scaffold for PEDOT:PSS and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as a plasticizer and secondary dopant. The PAPL hydrogel, characterized by its ultrasoft nature (Young’s modulus ≈ 0.76 kPa), high conductivity (5.52 S m −1 ), strong adhesion (171 kPa on PET), and ultralow interface impedance (<1 kΩ), ensuring robust, seamless conformal adhesion along with reliable sEMG signals (SNR ≈ 30 dB) during movements. Furthermore, the PAPL hydrogel exhibits outstanding self-healing capabilities, remarkable ultraviolet resistance, and potent antibacterial properties, enabling it to fulfill diverse functional requirements in real-world applications. The PAPL hydrogel is capable of monitoring muscle activity and providing accurate fatigue assessment, with performance markedly superior to that of commercial electrodes, demonstrating its application potential in personalized medicine and future healthcare systems.

Biphase Ionic Hydrogels with Ultrasoftness and High Conductivity for Bio-Ionotronics

Bingsen Wang,Fagui Dong,Xisheng Sun,Yanan Bu,Haonan Wang,Dawei Tang,Lin Li

Achieving stable bioelectronic interfaces is hindered by inherent mechanical–electrochemical mismatches, limiting long-term device functionality in dynamic tissues. Current hydrogel-based bio-ionotronic devices face a fundamental trade-off: soft hydrogels lack sufficient ionic carriers, while ionic hydrogels compromise softness due to high cross-linking density. Here, we developed a biphasic ionic hydrogel (BIH) by integrating microgel-rich ionic reservoirs (microgel phase) into a continuous hydrogel matrix (CH phase) via hydrogen bonds. The microgel phase and CH phase of BIH work synergistically, reducing cross-linking density while maintaining the ion monomer content of the hydrogel. This synergistic structure decouples ionic storage from mechanical compliance, enabling ultrasoftness (2 kPa) and high ionic conductivity (8.55 S m–1), surpassing conventional ionic hydrogels. By tuning the microgel content, we increased the polymer network’s characteristic length, facilitating ion diffusion while maintaining structural integrity and reducing interfacial impedance. Demonstrations in real-time electromyography and mechanical motion sensing validated its potential for soft bioelectronics.

Disposable and flexible smart electronic tapes for long-term biopotential monitoring

Gao Jiuwei,Hu Mingwei,Sun Hao,Wang Yuanyuan,Wei Yuan,Li Weiwei,Zheng Lu,Xu Manzhang,Lu Qianbo,Liu Zhiyuan,Yang Hui,Wang Yongtian,Song Weitao,Wang Xuewen,Huang Wei

Long-term biopotential acquisition is of great significance for the early detection and timely treatment of various diseases. Currently, the standard silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) gel electrodes may cause skin irritation when worn for a long time. Repeating the use of electrodes on different individuals can lead to the risk of cross-infection. Here, we propose a smart electronic tape (SET) to acquire biopotentials, in the form of a dry single-sided tape made from a combination of an ultra-stretchable conductive pattern on substrates with different functions. The high stability and durability of the patterned conductors provide accurate and timely acquisition of biopotentials, such as electrocardiograph (ECG) and electromyography (EMG). The strong adhesive behavior of the tape as well as the low-cost manufacturing process allow convenient and long-term wearing in a disposable manner. We anticipate the SET will pioneer next-gen wearable electronics for applications like disease prevention, health monitoring, and human–computer interaction.

Intrinsically Stretchable, Self-Healing, and Large-Scale Epidermal Bioelectrode Arrays for Electrophysiology and Gesture Recognition

Yifan Liu,Baobao Xu,Zhixin Xie,Jiaxin Yang,Yutong Liu,Yiyi Yang,Haihua Xu

Electrophysiological (EP) signals, referred to as low-level biopotentials driven by active or passive human movements, are of great importance for kinesiology, rehabilitation, and human-machine interaction. To capture high-fidelity EP signals, bioelectrodes should possess high conductivity, high stretchability, and high conformability to skin. While traditional metal bioelectrodes are endowed with stretchability via complex structural designs, they are vulnerable to external or internal inference due to their low fracture strain and large modulus. Here, we report a self-healing elastic composite of silver nanowire (AgNW), graphite nanosheet, and styrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene, which exhibits high stretchability of ε = 500%, high conductivity of σ = ∼1923 S·cm–1, and low resistance change (ΔR/R0) of 0.14 at ε = 40% while its resistance increases ∼0.8% after a 24 h stretching operation at ε = 50%. We employed the elastic composites for accurate and stable monitoring of electrocardiograph and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. Further, we demonstrate an all-solution and printable process to obtain a large-scale sEMG bioelectrode array, enabling highly conformal adhesion on skin and high-fidelity gesture recognition.

Guomin Ye,Taosha Jin,Xueke Wang,Yi Chen,Qiang Wu,Yanfen Wan,Peng Yang

Multimodal integrated flexible electronic skin offers exceptional processing capability and versatility in various application scenarios. Researchers are devoting to developing nanomaterials or nano-devices with multidisciplinary functions. Herein, a trinary-mode integrated flexible electronic skin (E-Skin) was designed for physiological perception and contactless kinematics pattern recognition, which serves as real-time health monitor, electrode patch and contactless sensor. The composite film of liquid metal particles and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (LMPs@TPU) was prepared by a combination of electrostatic spinning, electrostatic spraying, and knife coating , which can be stretched up to 404.7 % at stress of 1Mpa. The film was endowed three functional modes through different forms of encapsulation, which allows for (1) detecting human arthrosis movements, muscle stretching, and inspiration, (2) achieving a real-time capture of Electrocardiogram (ECG) and surface electromyography (sEMG), and a Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) system for game control based on sEMG signals was also developed, (3) a contactless sensor combining with a machine learning model which realizes the recognition of human motion patterns with a receiver operating characteristic curve and area under curve score (ROC-AUC-score) of 0.99. The three models of this E-Skin highlight the significant potential for industrialization in various fields, such as HMI, physiological perception, virtual reality, and motion analysis.

An ultrathin gas-permeable imperceptible electronic skin enables maxillofacial electrophysiological monitoring

Yaqi Zhang,Minfeng Wu,Yile Wang,Xiang Chen,Meiqi Wang,Feng Chen,Wentao Cao,Shengcai Qi

Maxillofacial electromyographic (EMG) signals serve as crucial indirect indicators of occlusal function, playing a significant role in clinical oral diagnosis. However, conventional gel electrodes with occlusive nature induce skin irritation and wearer discomfort, which limits long-term monitoring. Here, we developed an ultrathin, gas-permeable, and flexible electronic skin (e-skin) designed for imperceptible, long-term maxillofacial EMG monitoring. This e-skin comprises a stretchable substrate formed by core–shell elastic fibers fabricated via coaxial electrospinning, coated with PEDOT:PSS@MXene nanocomposite layers. The cross-linking effect between PEDOT:PSS and MXene (specifically, the hydrogen bonding between MXene and PSS chains and the electrostatic interaction between MXene and PEDOT chains) reduces the interlayer spacing, concurrently delaying MXene oxidation by repelling water and air and enhancing electron transfer between MXene layers. In sEMG measurement trials, the e-skin successfully acquired clear, stable myoelectric signals corresponding to various chewing intensities and patterns (e.g., gum chewing and intermittent occlusion). In particular, ultrathin dimensionality substantially diminishes foreign body perceptibility and associated wearer discomfort, thereby elevating sustained comfort thresholds and long-term therapeutic viability. This work presents a novel material-device strategy for next-generation wearable bioelectric sensing platforms, enabling comfortable, precise monitoring with applications in facial muscle assessment, rehabilitation medicine, and neuromuscular diagnostics.

Tunable Hydrogel Electronics for Diagnosis of Peripheral Neuropathy

Ganguang Yang,Yijia Hu,Wei Guo,Wei Lei,Wei Liu,Guojun Guo,ChaoFan Geng,Yutian Liu,Hao Wu

Peripheral neuropathy characterized by rapidly increasing numbers of patients is commonly diagnosed via analyzing electromyography signals obtained from stimulation-recording devices. However, existing commercial electrodes have difficulty in implementing conformal contact with skin and gentle detachment, dramatically impairing stimulation/recording performances. Here, this work develops on-skin patches with polyaspartic acid-modified dopamine/ethyl-based ionic liquid hydrogel (PDEH) as stimulation/recording devices to capture electromyography signals for the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy. Triggered by a one-step electric field treatment, the hydrogel achieves rapid and wide-range regulation of adhesion and substantially strengthened mechanical performances. Moreover, hydrogel patches assembled with a silver-liquid metal (SLM) layer exhibit superior charge injection and low contact impedance, capable of capturing high-fidelity electromyography. This work further verifies the feasibility of hydrogel devices for accurate diagnoses of peripheral neuropathy in sensory, motor, and mixed nerves. For various body parts, such as fingers, the elderly's loose skin, hairy skin, and children's fragile skin, this work regulates the adhesion of PDEH-SLM devices to establish intimate device/skin interfaces or ensure benign removal. Noticeably, hydrogel patches achieve precise diagnoses of nerve injuries in these clinical cases while providing extra advantages of more effective stimulation/recording performances. These patches offer a promising alternative for the diagnosis and rehabilitation of neuropathy in future.

Hairy-Skin-Adaptive Viscoelastic Dry Electrodes for Long-Term Electrophysiological Monitoring

Qiong Tian,Hang Zhao,Xin Wang,Ying Jiang,Mingxing Zhu,Huoerhute Yelemulati,Ruijie Xie,Qingsong Li,Rui Su,Zhengshuai Cao,Naifu Jiang,Jianping Huang,Guanglin Li,Shixiong Chen,Xiaodong Chen,Zhiyuan Liu

Long-term epidermal electrophysiological (EP) monitoring is crucial for disease diagnosis and human–machine synergy. The human skin is covered with hair that grows at an average rate of 0.3 mm per day. This impedes a stable contact between the skin and dry epidermal electrodes, resulting in motion artifacts during ultralong-term EP monitoring. Therefore, accurate and high-quality EP signal detection remains challenging. To address this issue, a new solution—the hairy-skin-adaptive viscoelastic dry electrode (VDE) is reported. This innovative technology is capable of bypassing hair and filling into the skin wrinkles, leading to long-lasting and stable interface impedance. The VDE maintains a stable interface impedance for a remarkable period of 48 days and 100 cycles. The VDE is highly effective in shielding against hair disturbances in electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring, even during intense chest expansion, and in electromyography (EMG) monitoring during large strain. Furthermore, the VDE is easily attachable to the skull without requiring any electroencephalogram (EEG) cap or bandage, making it an ideal solution for EEG monitoring. This work represents a substantial breakthrough in the field of EP monitoring, providing a solution for the previously challenging issue of monitoring human EP signals on hairy skin.

A reusable, healable, and biocompatible PEDOT:PSS hydrogel-based electrical bioadhesive interface for high-resolution electromyography monitoring and time–frequency analysis

Rongtai Wan,Jiawen Yu,Ziyi Quan,Hude Ma,Jinhao Li,Fajuan Tian,Wen Wang,Yajuan Sun,Junyan Liu,Dian Gao,Jingkun Xu,Baoyang Lu

As the most ideal interface between bioelectronic devices and biological tissues, the electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI) holds significant potential for various applications, including soft bioelectronics, wearable devices, and electrophysiological signal monitoring. However, most current EBIs are disposable products that lack repeatable adhesion and self-healing properties, thus hindering practical applications. Herein, we develop a reusable EBI by incorporating a dynamic non-covalent interaction enhancer polydopamine (PDA) and conductive PEDOT:PSS into an adhesive hydrogel matrix polyacrylamide (PAM). The EBI exhibits intriguing overall electrical and mechanical properties, including high conductivity (5.57 S m −1 ), tissue-like Young’s modulus (2.7 kPa), low interfacial impedance (1 kΩ), and excellent adhesion strength (46.45 ± 1.75 kPa on porcine skin) with excellent retention (87 %) after 200 adhering/detaching cycles, high self-healing efficiency of 94.11 %, and outstanding biocompatibility in HDF-a and HaCaT cell models. Benefiting from these superior properties, we further demonstrate the fabrication and application of an EBI-based reusable electromyography monitoring patch (EMP). The reusable EMP enables high-resolution electromyography signal monitoring capability with a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30.05 dB than commercial electrodes (12.06 dB). Remarkably, such reusable EMP maintains very stable SNR of 21.82 dB after 200 adhering/detaching cycles (3.8 times higher than commercial electrodes, 5.74 dB after 30 cycles), and showcases typical time and frequency-domain characteristics. These findings demonstrate a promising reusable EMP to enhance the accuracy and convenience of electromyography monitoring.
