Lignin-based multifunctional fertilizer for immobilization of Pb (II) in contaminated soil

Tao Li,Shaoyu Lü,Shaofei Zhang,Chunmei Gao,Mingzhu Liu

Excessive application of fertilizers and their losses have exerted a great threat on soil environment. Slow- or controlled-release fertilizers have been widely produced to alleviate the problem. However, most of them can not remedy contaminated soil environment, and even make it worse. To improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce soil environmental pollution, lignin, an extensive biomass source, was used to synthesize a lignin-based superabsorbent (LPA), which was then introduced into the fertilizer as an outer coating material to obtain lignin-based multifunctional fertilizer (LMF). Results showed that the introduction of LPA can improve water-holding and water-retention capacity of soil and nutrients release behavior of fertilizers. The cumulative release rates of nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc were 79.5%, 46.7% and 60.1% after 25 days, respectively. Additionally, LMF can efficiently immobilize and restrict the migration of bivalent lead (Pb(II)) by complexation with lignin. About 91.7% of Pb(II) was immobilized after soil-sand mixture with Pb(NO 3 ) 2 was treated by LMF. The pot experiments indicated that the LMF exhibited a positive effect on the growing of corn in Pb(II)-contaminated soil. Therefore, this work provides a promising fertilizer to improve the utilization efficiency of water, sustained release of nutrients, and immobilization of Pb (II) in contaminated soil.

A study on the changes in rice composition under reduced fertilization conditions using Raman spectroscopy technology

Li Changming,Tan Yong,Liu Chunyu,Gao Xun,Lv Zhong

The substitution of microbial fertilizer for chemical fertilizer can not only improve soil fertility but also effectively enhance rice quality. To investigate the effect of different amounts of combined application of chemical fertilizer and microbial fertilizer on the amylose content of rice, this study adopts theoretical calculations to compare the preprocessed Raman spectroscopy information of rice with reduced fertilization and establishes a recognition model for the amylose content of rice, which is used to detect the amylose content in rice. Based on the amylose spectral values measured by Raman spectroscopy and the known starch structure and functional groups, the Raman peaks are mainly distributed in the range of 400 cm − 1 to 1400 cm − 1 . The Raman characteristic peaks at 483 cm − 1 , 869 cm − 1 , 933 cm − 1 , 1082 cm − 1 , 1126 cm − 1 , 1335 cm − 1 , 1385 cm − 1 , and 1455 cm − 1 exhibit strong vibration modes, which are consistent with its main nutrient component of amylose. By comparing the measured amylose content in the regions treated with microbial fertilizer combined with different amounts of reduced fertilization and the spectral intensity values of amylose measured by Raman spectroscopy, the results show that the treatment of combining conventional amounts of microbial fertilizer with different amounts of reduced chemical fertilizer exhibits a decreasing trend in the amylose content of rice.

A novel slow-release selenium approach for cadmium reduction and selenium enrichment in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Peicheng Huang,Weichun Yang,Qingzhu Li,Qi Liao,Mengying Si,Meiqing Shi,Zhihui Yang

In this study, a novel slightly-soluble selenium (Se) fertilizer (SSF) was successfully applied to address the problems of Cd pollution in paddy soil and rice, and Se deficiency in human beings. The pot and field experiments showed that Cd content in the rice grains was reduced by 48.4%–82.89% and Se content was increased nearly by 30-fold comparing the control group. The application of SSF increased the soil pH and significantly reduced the DGT-extracted Cd in the soil. Moreover, DCB-extractable Fe content on the surface of roots was prompt by SSF, which formed a physical barrier, namely iron plaque (IP), to inhibit Cd translocation to the above-ground tissues of the rice plants. The Cd content in the IP was also decreased before the filling period, possibly contributing to the reduction in major Cd accumulation in the rice grains. In addition, the continuous Se increase and Cd reduction in the IP by the SSF gradually exceeded that of water-soluble Se during the three periods of rice plant growth. This suggests that SSF has high potential to be an effective Se fertilizer for inhibiting Cd uptake and enriching Se in rice.

Biomass-based multifunctional fertilizer system featuring controlled-release nutrient, water-retention and amelioration of soil

Xinggang Wang,Shaoyu Lü,Chunmei Gao,Xiubin Xu,Yi Wei,Xiao Bai,Chen Feng,Nannan Gao,Mingzhu Liu,Lan Wu

In an effort to enhance the efficiency of fertilizer use and minimize adverse environmental effects, a novel biomass-based, multifunctional controlled-release fertilizer (BMCF) was prepared to improve nutrient use efficiency and enhance crop production systems for more sustainable agriculture practices. The fertilizer design included natural attapulgite as a matrix, co-granulated ammonium zinc phosphate and urea as fertilizer core, cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) as an inner coating, and a carboxymethyl chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid)/attapulgite (CMCS-g-PAA/APT) superabsorbent composite as an outer coating. The effect of an APT matrix, CAB inner coating and superabsorbent composite outer coating on nutrient release rate was investigated. The influence of the BMCF on water-holding and water-retention capacity of soil samples was determined. The degradation behavior of the CMCS-g-PAA/APT outer coating in soil solution was evaluated. The experimental results indicated that the product prepared by a simple and economical method can effectively reduce N leaching loss and runoff, improve soil moisture retention capacity, and ameliorate soil acidity and alkalinity.

Itaconic acid–urea–acrylic acid copolymer as a novel water and nutrient retaining fertilizer

Chen Zhao,Jia Zhang,Qiulin Yue,Lin Zhao,Huan Ma,Zhengyan Wu,Xin Zhang

To meet the demands of a growing population, the global food production will have to increase by at least 70% by 2050. Developing high-performance water and nutrient retaining fertilizer (WNRF) to increase crop yield in arid and semi-arid areas is an effective measure to maintain the balance of ecological environment and the sustainable development of human being. In this study, itaconic acid, as one of the 12 most promising bio-based platform compounds, was combined with urea and acrylic acid in methanol to form the oligomer, which could quickly cross-link to obtain a new type of WNRF with the rapid evaporation of methanol. According to the performance of water and fertilizer retention, the optimal WNRF showed water retention ratio of 47.1%, migrate-to-surface loss control ratio of 85.6%, and leaching loss control ratio of 66.6%, respectively. It retained in the soil via the filtering effect, resulting in lower loss of water and nutrient. As illustrated by two individual pot experiments, the optimal WNRF effectively facilitated the growth of plant rape and maize, in which the dry matter weight of shoot was increased by 28% and 88% compared to the control group. This work provides a promising approach to enhance the utilization efficiency of water and nutrient, which is expected to have potential applications in sustainable modern agriculture of drought regions.

Ceresin wax enhances hydrophobicity and density of bio-based polyurethane of controlled-release fertilizers: Streamlined production, improved nutrient release performance, and reduced cost

Boning Su,Mingchuan Yang,Bin Gao,Ziyao Li,Xiangjie Zhao,Shugang Zhang,Dongdong Cheng,Tianlin Shen,Yuanyuan Yao,Yuechao Yang

Bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizers (BCRFs) can significantly improve nutrient utilization and reduce pollution. However, challenges such as spray gun clogging, adhesion and tearing between fertilizers during the actual production of BCRFs pose a severe challenge to production chain development. In addition, the poor hydrophobicity and cross-linking properties of bio-based coatings severely affect the controlled release properties of BCRFs. Although some measures have been taken to ameliorate the above problems, the cumbersome and costly modification process is challenging to be applied on a large scale. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to search for a more straightforward and efficient method of production and modification to address the aforementioned unresolved challenges in the field of CRFs. In this study, bio-based polyester polyol (BPP) was used as the base for polyurethane reaction, and low-viscosity castor oil (CO) was used as the modifier to reduce the viscosity of BPP. This led to the preparation of Inter-Modified Coated Controlled-Release Fertilizers (ICRFs) to prevent spray gun clogging. Building upon this, hydrophobic and dense wax-based coated fertilizer (WBCF) was prepared by modifying ICRF with Ceresin wax to alleviate the challenges associated with adhesion and tearing between fertilizer particles during the coating process. The WBCF exhibited remarkable controlled-release characteristics, with a nitrogen (N) release longevity of nearly 180 days, requiring only 3 % of the coating materials. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for overcoming the key constraints in the development and production of CRFs and provides insights into developing green, low-cost fertilizers with excellent controlled-release properties.

Activated-Lignite-Based Super Large Granular Slow-Release Fertilizers Improve Apple Tree Growth: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Laboratory and Field Evaluations

Yafu Tang,Xinying Wang,Yuechao Yang,Bin Gao,Yongshan Wan,Yuncong C. Li,Dongdong Cheng

In this work, lignite, a low-grade coal, was modified using the solid-phase activation method with the aid of a Pd/CeO2 nanoparticle catalyst to improve its pore structure and nutrient absorption. Results indicate that the adsorption ability of the activated lignite to NO3–, NH4+, H2PO4–, and K+ was significantly higher than that of raw lignite. The activated lignite was successfully combined with the polymeric slow-release fertilizer, which exhibits typical slow-release behavior, to prepare the super large granular activated lignite slow-release fertilizer (SAF). In addition to the slow-release ability, the SAF showed excellent water-retention capabilities. Soil column leaching experiments further confirmed the slow-release characteristics of the SAF with fertilizer nutrient loss greatly reduced in comparison to traditional and slow-release fertilizers. Furthermore, field tests of the SAF in an orchard showed that the novel SAF was better than other tested fertilizers in improve the growth of young apple trees. Findings from this study suggest that the newly developed SAF has great potential to be used in apple cultivation and production systems in the future.

Gelatin-based spray for forest fire prevention and fertilization

Ai Yuanfang,Zheng Na,Liu Wenbo,Yang Ping,Wu Xi,Tian Yichen,Wang Chuyi,Liu Heyang,Huang Chongping,Liang Zhongli,Zhu Feng,Tang Longcheng,Ye Nanbiao,Li Jianjun,Cao Kun

Frequent forest fires, driven by hotter and drier climates, threaten biodiversity and human health, causing significant economic losses, air pollution, soil erosion, and degeneration. Current active and passive fire protection methods often suffer from environmental pollution, poor flexibility, and limited availability in remote areas. However, fast-acting surface flame retardants for passive forest fire protection, particularly for foliage, are rare. Herein, we report an easily obtainable gelatin-based fire spray, which resulted in 1.8 and 16.3-fold extension in ignition time, 34% and 39% reductions in total heat release, 78% and 92% reductions in fire growth index for dead and fresh leaves, respectively. After the fire warning is suppressed, for instance by rain, the sprayed substances can decompose and provide nitrogen and phosphorus as leaf and soil fertilizers without affecting soil microbial function, which increase plant net photosynthesis by 84% and effective nitrogen and phosphorus by 664% and 140%, respectively. Our green flame retardant and fertilizer material allows for simultaneous tree fire protection and growth.

Synergistic Fertilizers Improved Chemical Properties of Soil in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Field

Shuang Chen,Yihui Wang,Yan Shi

In this study, the efficiency of fertilizers was improved by coating the fertilizers with a hydrogel formed by the polymerization of itaconic acid (IA), maleic acid (MA), acrylic acid (AA), and potassium persulfate (KPS) to form a synergistic fertilizer and improve its slow-release performance. The effect of synergistic fertilizers on the changes in soil nutrients in wheat fields was studied through field and soil column experiments using ordinary and commercial synergistic fertilizers as controls and different application rates of `synergistic fertilizers as treatments. The results revealed that the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (N) and total N contents were significantly higher in T1 than that in CK, and the treatments were ranked as T3 > T2 > T5 > T1 > CK > T4. The difference in the alkali-hydrolyzed N and total N contents between CK and T3 was significant. In terms of available phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents, the treatments were ranked as T1 > T4 > T2 > CK > T3 in all soil layers and T3 > T2 > T5 > T1 > CK > T4 in the soil column. The treatments were ranked as T4>CK>T3>T1>T2 in terms of soil organic matter (SOM) content. Compared with ordinary fertilizers, synergistic fertilizers could significantly increase the soil total N, alkali-hydrolyzed N, available P, and available K contents. Compared with ordinary slow-release fertilizers in the market, the effect of synergistic fertilizers is better in improving the use efficiency of fertilizers. By slowly releasing nutrients, synergistic fertilizers can continuously provide nutrients for the growth and development of wheat and improve the use efficiency of fertilizer.

Ginger-extracted oil as an alternative for the emulsion to prepare chitosan microspheres for urea controlled-release fertilizer

Faqir Yahya,Chai Yunlong,Jakhar Ali Murad,Wu Sanmei,Luo Tong,Liao Shiyu,Kalhoro Mohammad Talib,Li Linqiu,Kaleri Abdul Rasheed,Tan Chengjia,Ma Jiahua,Zhang Qiling,Cao Shidong,Adeel Mohammad

The present study was undertaken with the aim of evaluating the ginger essential oil potential and its urea-loading efficacy in the preparation of control-releasing chitosan microspheres. The ginger oil for hydro-distillation was extracted by applying Clevenger apparatus, chemical composition was characterized by FTIR, and the GC-MS was used to identify the oil compounds. Urea-loaded chitosan microsphere formulations were formulated through modified emulsification and cross-linking procedure. The various factors and levels related to preparation of urea-loaded chitosan microspheres were evaluated using response surface test. The present study was also an effort to observe the yield and content of nitrogen. Additionally, FTIR and SEM were applied to characterize the microspheres. The results show the yield of ginger oil as 6.0%. Main compounds identified by GC-MS were gingerol, decanal, isoshogaol, octanal, and others. FTIR also showed that some typical bands appeared in ginger oil. The nitrogen content % in urea-loaded microspheres showed a significantly higher value in proportion to higher oil volume and cross-linking. However, by decreasing the amount of urea and enhancing acetic acid, nitrogen content was decreased. The lower oil concentrations improved the microsphere surface structure and morphology. Response surface analysis showed that the optimum preparation conditions are as follows: 2.094% of Span 80, 2.302% of acetic acid, and cross-linking agent ratio of formaldehyde to glutaraldehyde 1:8.15. Under these conditions, the theoretical value of nitrogen content of urea-loaded chitosan microspheres was 4.683%. According to release test, the urea diffused uniformly in the microspheres after 48 h. It is concluded that the use of ginger oil in control release of fertilizers is the right option in the formulations of control-releasing micro-fertilizers.

Preparation and Properties of a Novel Biodegradable Composite Hydrogel Derived from Gelatin/Chitosan and Polylactic Acid as Slow-Release N Fertilizer

Weijie Yuan,Sihan Li,Haohui Guan,Shuai Zhang,Yaoxiang Zhang,Min Zhang,Yi Yu,Xiangyi Chen

To improve the efficient use of nitrogen and decrease the environmental pollution of N losses, a novel and biodegradable composite hydrogel was prepared by chemical cross-linking synthesis using gelatin (Gel), chitosan (CS) and polylactic acid (PLA) as raw materials. Urea as the nitrogen source was loaded into this new biodegradable hydrogel using the solution immersion method. The chemical structures of the composite hydrogels were characterized and their properties were analyzed by XRD and XPS. The regulation of urea loading and the swelling behavior of the composite hydrogel under different temperature conditions were investigated; the release behavior and release model of the composite hydrogel in the aqueous phase was explored. The results show that the loading of urea is controllable in aqueous urea solution with different concentrations. In the water phase, it shows a three-stage sustained release behavior, that is, the initial release rate of urea is relatively fast, and the medium release rate of urea gradually slows down, and finally the nutrient release rate tends to be flat. The release behavior in the water phase fits to the Ritger–Peppas model. Within 10 min, 180 min and 900 min, the cumulative nutrient release rate of gelatin/chitosan/PLA-urea (GCPU) composite hydrogel is 20%, 70% and 86%, respectively. Compared with pure urea, The urea diffusion time of GCPU was extended by 1350-times. In addition, the GCPU also has good water absorption and water retention properties, in which average water content can reach as high as 4448%. All of the results in this work showed that GCPU hydrogel had good water absorption and retention and N slow-release properties, which are expected to be widely used in sustainable agriculture and forestry, especially in arid and degraded land. Keywords:polylactic acid;urea;composite hydrogel;slow-release fertilizer;biodegradable

Synthesis and Application of Modified Lignin Polyurea Binder for Manufacturing a Controlled-Release Potassium Fertilizer

Mingyang Li,Gaoyang E,Conghui Wang,Ruolin Shi,Junxi Wang,Shuo Wang,Yu Wang,Qi Chen,Zeli Li,Zhiguang Liu

Conventional potassium chloride granules have inefficient applications in agricultural production due to particle irregularity and low fluidity. The application of controlled-release potassium chloride could increase the potassium-use efficiency and alleviate the shortage of potassium ore resources. In this study, a well-rounded potassium chloride fertilizer core was prepared, using the graft modification of polyurea to enhance the coating rate and release performance. The adhesive and tensile characteristics of the modified polyurea binder, as well as the granule properties of modified polyurea binder potassium chloride, were studied to determine the ideal lignin-grafted ratio. The effect of the modified polyurea binder with potassium chloride on the properties of coated fertilizer was investigated. The findings, shown by radar maps of the binder’s properties, demonstrated that the ideal mass ratio of the modified lignin polyurea binder to urea is 1:2. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated that the amino functional groups of lignin were enhanced, improving the product’s interfacial compatibility with the polyurea matrix. Compared to humic acid (HA; 12%) and bentonite (Ben; 30%) treatments, the granule intensity of the 9.9%—1:2 treatment considerably increased by 139.10% and 38.86%, respectively, while the static angle of the granules reduced by 16.67% and 3.81%. The 28-day cumulative release rate of the modified polyurea (9.9%—2:1) with a 5% coating thickness was the lowest (28%), 42% lower than that of the lowest conventional treatment. In summary, the creation of a bio-lignin polyurea binder under the optimum conditions reduced the need for petrochemical-based materials, allowed the preparation of fertilizer with granules of increased fluidity, and enabled the successful coating of a high-salt potassium fertilizer, offering a novel technique for the high-value application of potash fertilizer coating. Keywords:lignin;modified polyurea;binder;potassium chloride;controlled-release fertilizer
